I wonder how Vallenato fits in with the other (my clumsy term) 'working
class fun-time musics'? To my ears, there seems to be a common thread
running through Polka, Klezmer, Tex-Mex, Tejano, Creole, Cajun, etc. Even
ska has a bit of it. Does Vallenato fit in with these at all, or are the
rhythms quite different? The Lisandro Meza piece does not seem to fit in
with these, actually. More complex rhythmically... wiggly, syncopated
basslines.
>For me it is impossible to hear Vallenatos as just
>music (that is without a context). It has an emotional charge
>(not positive, I'm afraid) that just doesn't let me do that.
Does this bring up our old observation about one person's exotica being
another person's backyard?
I guess I can relate to that. I've had a hard time getting past my
childhood formations against polka. Now I can appreciate the more singular
works, but the cliched majority still makes me go blech. (And what's the
deal with these polka accordionists and their constant eighth-note pumping
on the bellows?!? If they don't stop that, they're gonna go blind!)

Speaking of the late Harold Nicholas, did anyone happen to see 'Down Argentine Way' a week or so ago (on AMC, I believe)? It was brill ... one of those 30's films with an hour and twenty minutes of singing and dancing and ten minutes of plot! The Nicholas brothers were featured in two outstanding numbers and Carmen Miranda also had two numbers. Great film.

Thanks for the contributions and reminders. I updated my links today and
added several from my own personal list and a few more thanks to your help.
Oh, also, I constructed a multiple links page to the archived "It Crawled
From the Bins" entries so they are once again easy to find. If you haven't
seen this and need a good chuckle, check it out. I don't know how long the
archives will remain.

Subject: (exotica) Space Bob #100 *****
Congratulations and celebrations and 100 "bussis" (baci) from Munich to
Brian K. and Cheryl for 100 fine editions of SPACE BOB!
Every sunday at 10 p.m. CET it has become a dearing habit to switch on
my old Centris AV Macintosh and squeeze out the last disposable
bits'n'bytes out of its pre-historic 68040Hz steam processor to tune
into the funky 28,8 K mono stream coming from "abroad", in fact a
university in Montreal, 4 p.m there, and listen to Brian and Cheryl
announcing their eternal 4 blocks of almost 4 songs of anything we ever
discussed in the Exotica list and more. It's actually more fun and
*precious* to hear something in the radio "while it happens", than to
"download" files "from the internet" whenever you want to. And I must
say I "really really" like the fact that the setup of SPACE BOB never
changes but the music always brings pleasant surprises. Thanks to both
of you with the best wishes for your next 100 shows!

P.S. on #100: Conny Plank also produced the "Are We Not Men?" album by
Devo.
The reason why Sky records are reissued on all kinds of different labels
is, that the present owner simply sells each record to who pays the
most.
In ancient times the European border between catholicism and
protestantism ran right between Cologne and Dusseldorf, Cologne being on
the catholic side, Dusseldorf on the protestant, triggering a constant
competition between the two cities. BTW the valley of Dusseldorf is the
neighborvalley of the Neanderthal. So the entire era is a melting pot of
religions. Does that explain something? Who knows?

Subject: (exotica) Raymond Scott and His Orchestra: "This Time With Strings"
Johan, you appreciate Raymond Scott's "This Time With Strings" about as much as I do, musically, at about a 2...but the cover! This is one of my favorite album covers ever...pretty lady sitting on the floor on top of some large drawing of a violin, with yarn covering everything, including her...wow. If that isn't, uh, abstract expressionism and lounge music mashed together, I don't know what is. When I found my copy in the thrift, I was taken by how beautiful it looked and had it in my stack before I even noticed it was Scott. Well, maybe my priorities were confused -- I was looking for Hawaiian records at the time. Funny how intention is never quite met when thrifting.
