Cathall Tohill also produced the film/trash magazine entitled Ungawa! Featured
all the cool things like Betty Page, Russ Meyer, John Waters etc.  A few years
back he organised film nights in Central London.  Last time I saw him was at
Lee Hazlewood's Meltdown festival.  He was writing another film book but don't
have any news on that

I never usually associate Stan Kenton's name with
exotica or "lounge", and I've never been much of a fan
(possibley because I'm still a relatively new convert
to the swell world of jazz and its variants). That
said, I picked up two lps the other day that are
fantastic (token passionate partisan statement: so f'n
great I got them drunk and slept with them): Cuban
Fire and Progressive Jazz. The lineup includes list
familiars such as Jack Costanzo, Shorty Rogers,
Shelley Manne, June Christy, Pete Candoli, etc. I like
Shorty Rogers' Afro-Cuban Influence quite a bit, and
much of Cuban Fire is in that category. Progressive
Jazz is my favorite of the two - mostly because of the
haunting, bluesy song Lonely Woman, sung by June
Christy (reminds me of the depression era Cole
Porterish songs covered by Basta's Boulevard of Broken
Dreams... or, better, Libby Holman's cover of Love for Sale).

Cuban Fire is probably my favorite Stan Kenton record and I have
most of his!

I have always liked Stan Kenton...he was always trying new things and
giving new musicians opportunities.

Yes, if you look at the people in his bands, a lot of them eventually
became folks which are more celebrated by exotica fans.  The roots of "West
Coast" jazz seem to be from Stan Kenton's tree.

You might also look at the other way around, though...and see that Stan
Kenton's band took the sounds provided by some of these great musicians and
included them...thus Shelley Manne, Shorty Rogers, Jack Costanzo, Pete
Rugolo really made his music come alive.  Once they were able to get out on
on their own with their own group or recording contract, they could do even
more!

Regardless,  Stan Kenton's "sound", the musicians that got their start and
the music titles from the band's repertoire deserve investigation.

Kenton, Woody Herman's Band (the Four Brothers: Getz, Zoot, Cohn...), the
Lighthouse All-Stars (Mulligan, Chet Baker) and folks in the Brubeck circle
up in SF (Desmond, Guaraldi, Tjader, Bobo).

It was fun picking up the Jazz Scene U.S.A. video featuring Shorty Rogers &
His Giants (incluidng West Coast stalwarts like Lou Levy, Larry Bunker, Gary
Peacock) and Shelly Manne & His Men (Conte Candoli, Richie Kamuca, Russ
Freeman, Monty Budwig).  Names I see all the time on my crime jazz
soundtracks.

There's a very interesting piece on Kenton's "City of Glass" in the Songs in
the Key of Z book.

Currently listening to Tito Puente's cover of "Take Five." (con timbales)

While on this WC jazz thing, I have to mention one of
my favorites, Red Norvo (though I'm not sure if he
started out west when backing Mildred Bailey). I love
vibes and Norvo on vibes is about as good as it gets -
particularly on his lps with flautist Buddy Collette
(who has also graced Don Ralke and Dick Marx lps),
with The Jazz Pickers (this lp, with exotic titles
like "Evening in Azerbaijan", has a cool beatnikish
sound), and the Live in Australia CD with Frank
Sinatra (I do not think ever schwung any harder than
he did on this tour). I know at least one book has
been done on West Coast jazz... and, as I can't recall
the title, that gives me a reason to disappear for a
few hours on Sunday.

And on at least one of his RCA recordings (I think it's "Hi-Five"),
the flutist is Robert Drasnin.

Stan Kenton is also one of my favorites.  "Cuban Fire" is a gem
(tunes by Johnny Richards--check out his "Rites of Diablo" on
Roulette for more in a similar vein).

Unfortunately, despite his popularity with the public, a lot of the
traditional critics considered Kenton's music pretentious and loud.
Guitarist Eddie Condon is supposed to have said that listening to a
Kenton record sounded like "Stan signed 200 musicians for the
session...and they were all on time".

A phenomenal big band whose Monday night stints at the Village Gate were
legendary. I had the privilege of catching them in '77, months after taking a

Johnny Puleo & His Harmonica Gang
(Audio Fidelity, 1957)

A harmonica combo, 5 of them in the cover photo. All harmonica and nothing
else. I like it. Very well-recorded -- they got BIG sounds down on the
tape. Unfortunately, I have the mono version. Wish it was stereo for more
immersion. My favorite track is a romping "St. Louis Blues Boogie". There
are also standards like "Peanut Vendor", "Sheik Of Araby", and, yes, "Peg
O' My Heart". If you like pure harmonica, this is a good album. If you
prefer a larger band with a rhythm section, you might want to steer clear.

Now, the question... the liner notes mention that J.P. is a veteran of
Borrah Minevitch's Harmonica Rascals. As is Leo Diamond and (I think) one
of the Harmonicats. So, are there any Borrah Minnevitch albums out there?
Or do they predate LPs? 78s only?

Definitely a novelty LP, and the Mummy novelty wears off pretty fast.  Rod

With things so slow here, I've been doing some reading in the list
archives. The really early stuff, from '94 and '95. Interesting,
educational, recommended. And in a sideways way, makes me want to clarify
my two cents on the recent Jack flak. Seeing as our blatherings are
preserved for posterity -- or until xmission clears house.

I know you probably don't want to hear any more on the subject (feel free
to move on), but I feel like I didn't express myself quite right. I may
have given the false impression that I thought Jack should get a free ride
as far as his list behavior. Nay.

For one, it was sad to see Jack go off again. He'd been doing pretty well,
this time around. And then I was disappointed to see so many people "get
the knives out" and dig in.

I found that kind of funny, considering that after the departure of She Who
Must Not Be Named, there was all that hand-wringing about "oh, we didn't
handle that very well," "oh, we went too far," etc.

Then a couple of months later, someone who's contributed (and, yes, annoyed
on occasion) for years screws up -- and right away, it's out with the knives.

Of course, Jack should'na done it in the first place. But it might have
been better to do like we used to do (see, I'm finally connecting back to
where I started this): a simple, "Hey, Jack! That's over the line. Maybe
you should think it over." And (historically) within a day or so, he would
apologize.

This is a more boring way to handle it, indeed. But that's my two cents.
Well, four cents now, I guess. Thanks for the space.

Do I!!!  It features the Yardbirds, Sounds Orchestral, The Rockin' Berries,
Matt Monro (?) and the Beatles' feet.  No live performances, all
lipsynced,  (the Beatles' feet footage was live) but a good 'un.  I haven't
seen this film in almost 20 years!

ROME (AP) - Vittorio Gassman, one of Italy's most respected actors who played
both leading men and comedic roles on stage and screen, died Thursday. He was
77.

Gassman, best known for his performances in the films ``Bitter Rice,''
``Mambo'' and ``The Family,'' died of a heart attack at his home in Rome, said
his agent, Franca Rodolfi.

Gassman also starred as a blind military man in the 1975 film ``Profumo di
Donna'' - a role that won him the Best Actor award at the Cannes film festival.
Al Pacino won an Academy Award for best actor in 1993 for the Hollywood remake,
``Scent of a Woman.''

Born in Genoa in 1922, Gassman also was a cinema and theater producer and a
playwright. He founded a traveling theater company and directed an acting
school.

Often typecast as an egocentric hero or playboy because of his suave good
looks, his early reputation abroad remained limited and rested mainly on
occasional hits like ``Bitter Rice.''

In the early 1950s, he went to Hollywood, where he appeared in such films as
``Beautiful but Dangerous'' and ``War and Peace'' and married actress Shelley
Winters. The marriage ended in divorce.

Later in the decade, Gassman discovered his comedic talent in two classics of
Italian cinema, ``Big Deal on Madonna Street'' (1958) and ``The Great War''
(1959).

He turned in a riveting performance as a Mafia don in Barry Levinson's 1996
film, ``Sleepers.'' That same year, he won the Golden Lion career prize from
the Venice Film Festival.

In 1997, Gassman was awarded one of Spain's prestigious Prince of Asturias
prizes - considered the Hispanic world's equivalent of the Nobel Prize - for
artistic innovation and for becoming ``a moral reference for all generations,''
prize organizers said at the time.

Gassman is survived by his third wife, Diletta D'Andrea, and four children.
Funeral plans were not immediately announced.

HELSINGBORG, Sweden (AP) - Actor Nils Poppe, a popular Swedish stage and film
comedian, died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 92.

Poppe had suffered many strokes, and his condition worsened this month.

Poppe was born Nils Einar Joensson but changed his name after he started acting
in 1930 at the Hippodrom theater in Malmoe, the city in southwestern Sweden
where he was born.

His talent for comic acting won him roles in nearly 40 movies, including Ingmar
Bergman's ``The Seventh Seal,'' in which he played Jof the Jester. He also
portrayed the character Fabian Bom - a perfectionist until he falls in love -
in a series of Swedish-language films that he helped write.

Poppe spent most of his later years as an actor playing light comedy at an
open-air theater outside Helsingborg, 300 miles southwest of the capital,
Stockholm. He retired in 1993.
