The book "Exotiquarium" covers much of the same ground but is much more
graphically appealing. It actually also has some tidbits of coverage the
others miss, so I'd go for that one too.

I know its probably redundant and vaguely pinickity but John Keating
generally uses a VCS3 (also called the Pitney, I think) - a British synth
made by EMS, 'The World's Longest Established Synthesizer Manufacturer'
(www.ems-synthi.demon.co.uk). It veers dramatically from a very thick
farty-like sound to an overly cheesy nasal whine which often grates on the
ears on recordings by Paddy Hopkirk and John Keating. It is in full effect
on Space Experience though.
The synth has a joystick and lots of plastic pegs which you stick into a
patch-type matrix to create your sounds. I would kill for one!

Interesting!  I hadn't heard the Anton LaVey legend until
this thread.  LaVey WAS a theatre organist in the San
Francisco area at one time.

My source concerning George Montalba/Bob Hunter is an old
issue of Theatre Organ magazine.  For many years, there was
a running gag in the magazine.  Some organist would pose at
the console of a Mighty Wurlitzer wearing a gorilla costume
and the caption would say, "George Montalba entertains!"

I guess the record in question doesn't mention Nice,
France.  But some of the other Montalba records do.

Saw him on a Dutch talkshow a year or so ago, with Linda Evans, his=20
wife or lover, whatever, I don't want to know, where he did a couple
of tunes, and I thought it was beyond appalling, wasn't long till I
stoically turned of the TV set, went for a walk and pretended that=20
it never happened.

Well, like him or dislike him, he is very popular (and if "Shaddup You

the article in salon mentions the buchla syn. - - i have played one of
these. - - a man who used to live down the street from me has one.  when he
lived down the street he lived on a 2d story walk up and he had to, when he
first got the buchla, hoist it through the bay window because it was never
going to fit through the hallway and door to his apartment.
he has since moved and the buchla came out of the apartment the same way
and is set up in his home studio
i tried to call him the other day but i only was able to leave a message.
it is my understanding that he is makeing electronic effects pedals and
having some success with them but i don't remember the name he is selling
them under.

Nothing in the way of brand names and such but I do recall your saying that
you wanted to scan in two steps rather than four.  Meaning you wanted a
scanning area greater than 11 inches.  Legal size instead of letter, correct?

Even with the standard scanning area, you should be able to capture the cover
in two passes.  Granted, you'll lose about a half inch or so from the top and
bottom.  But nobody will notice.  I've scanned hundreds of LPs and have yet
to have anybody point out that the finished image was cropped :)

Try the two step method and don't sweat it.

I second the suggestion. It's a sterling album with an odd, and usually
successful, variety of styles. Has about 4-5 good or really good pieces,
which is better than some of his actual soundtracks.

I personally wouldn't bid on it.  I'd go $10 for a mint copy of this one.
Quite a boring selection of average tracks, the standout being 'Secret
Code' - a crime jazz type track which sounds like his better soundtrack
work. This is another of those LPs that sit on the shelf, rarely being
played. More Mission Impossible - now there's a Lalo record worth having.
Mannix? Yep. Bullitt? Yep. Cool Hand Luke? So So. Theres a Whole Lalo Going
On? Also So So.

I too know an audio fanatic and and I found it strange how many of
them are more interested in the sound than the music they play.
Ever wondered why most audiophile recordings are much better
sonically than musically....  Still, we've gone through the same
debate over the years and have been fortunate to assemble a
bunch of better than average equipment cheaply.  It's more and
more difficult to find that much in this range anymore and the
market is moving more and more to the extremes at either end. If I
had to do it all over again it would not be easy.  One brand I see
floating around is NAD which at a reasonable premium above the
basic is not bad at all.  They seem to make everything which isn't
always a good sign.  Mission is another good performer as is
Creek, maker of my components, though I don't think they exist
anymore. The (native) food in the UK may be bad but they have a
fine array of more reasonably priced, decent quality and good
performing stereo manufacturers, much of which is available here in
North America.

Turntable alignment will improve sound and it's amazing how they
get out of whack so fast!  This Ariston Audio turntable of ours is a
high maintenece affair let alone a struggle to find belts for!  My old
Thorens TD 165? was the same if I remember correctly.  No doubt
about it, suspensions in belt drives are a regal pain!

When it comes to cartridges, after the first "moving coil" I never
went back. They're mostly lower output so you need a head amp
which thankfully my amp has built in.  Also, you can't replace the
stylus once it goes.  Still the Signet (AudioTechnica) OC-9 is the
best deal I know of.  Bought the first one at US$200 a number of
years ago and just got another at clearout for the same cost
through Audio Advisor last year. There's little else to compare to it
except a few Sumiko's which cost more and don't sound as good. I
held off on changing it until we got our Nitty Gritty machine but it
wore tremendously well in spite of what I've been playing through it
these past few years! I'm not a fan of Grado myself but cartridges
are probably the most personalized of all stereo components so...

The structure is now  (after a major jetsonian space age face lift) called "The
Encounter"   Exotica music plays on the elevator ride up and inside the
bar/resturant.   Spacemen clothes are worn by the waiters and  jetson space sounds
emit from the drink nozzel when filling up the drinks.   Enormous futuristic lava
lamps light up the surreal atmosphere.  Sip a perfect Mai Tai there and watch the
jets land, take off and taxi while Mancini plays.   Even the food is great!  I
can't think of a better place to hang out and enjoy watching jets and the
atmosphere of living in the future as seen through 1961 eyes.\

and looking forward to the Jazz Fest

me too.  btw, i just added yet another Magnavox stereo console (this one for
my garage -- bringing the count to 6) and it sounds great.  Fifteen bucks at
Goodwill and the cabinet is beautiful.  tell your friend about that!

Those consoles are certainly very cool. It is quite a luxury to live near a
good Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Regarding interconnect, if you have a high end system with $5K-7K worth of
components, laying down $150 for interconnect is no big deal. At least, this

Agreed, tube amps sound great --- but here's the problem with the with the
whole vaccum tube thing, and why they are pretty much obsolete now.  From the
first second you start to use it is already dying and with it the sound
quality.

Anyone else here remember the days when drugs stores would have a wall of
tubes you could purchase for doing home replacement on your electronic
devices ---- and they had those tube testers so you could test your tv or
record player tubes to see if they were OK?

On an old ABC-Paramount dust liner, I spy an act called Les Djinns Singers,
with 6 albums:

60 French Girls Chansons Americaines

Now my guess is that it's a schoolgirl (or fake schoolgirl) chorus, and
probably not very interesting -- but still, I'm curious what the story
really is, if anyone knows. 6 albums seems like a strong run for the
concept. I've never seen any of them myself. Thanks.

Also listed, more definitely on the exotica side, are 4 volumes of
"Adventures In Paradise" -- comps featuring artists like Alfred Alpaka, Roy
Smeck, The Islanders, The Tahitians.

bought from him.  He also sent some picture sleeves of Ferrante and Teicher

I was thinking today about that long time list member who just unsubscribed
to the list, forget his name and his comment about this list has become too
"international"
and didn't really understand what he meant, but then I do remember some
threads about Fela and I think that may have been the last straw, at least
for this fellow.

I can agree on that 1.  That's "international" music and yes, although
"MANY thousands" of genres and sub-genres could be called "exotica" and the
list rules state whatever about postings, I haven't heard anything about
the few posts about audiophile gear.

I would imagine that if THAT kind of post is excepted, well, then anything
could be accepted onto this list.

Aren't we all, aren't we all.

I think the burnout problem is sometimes exaggerated. I scored a mid-60s
Fender Champ guitar amp in 1994 -- god knows how long the tubes had been in
it at that point. It's had constant use since then and the tubes are as
strong as ever. Of course this is probably because I have spares on hand,
ready to replace them. The old reverse-Murphy law.

This is only my anecdotal experience. Other folks' tubes may nose-dive in a
week (though if they do, their bias needs adjustment).

Yes, I realize you're not talking about total burnout, but stealthy
degradation. You have a genuine point, but I'm just not as discouraged by it.

And true confessions... I still don't have a tube hi-fi -- I'm still using
my 70s Advent Model 300 receiver (solid state, but at least no chips).
Though I do enjoy running a record through the Champ now and then. I have
no shame. What it lacks in fidelity, it makes up in presence and character.

I have a Thorens TD165 that I bought over twenty years ago. It works
great. The machinery is stripped down to the bare essentials. It's
a very simple thing actually. It is very sensitive to heavy footsteps.
I have to step lightly around it.

Of course I could put a couple of pennies on the tone arm to fix
that... (just kidding)

My advice is to get the simplest turntable you can. The bottom of the
line Thorens sounds better than fancy shmancy ones from small esoteric
companies to me.

Earlier today I picked up the CD reissue of Page Cavanaugh's "Plays and
Sings for the Cocktail Hour" (1956). I've always been somewhat fond of this
record for its marginally cheesy piano-bar jazz with vocals.

Anyway, once I popped it in, I immediately noticed that the clarity was
considerably lower than the several digital recordings I've made myself off
my old record. In the recordings I've made myself, you can easily hear
hi-hats and other subtleties in the treble range that seem to be absent on
the CD. The CD seems so muffled by comparison that it almost sounds like
RealAudio. It almost defeats the whole purpose of buying the album on disc
in the first place, except for the 'convenience factor'.

Funny thing is, the disc is supposedly 'digitally remastered'. However, I'm
starting to realize that seeing 'Digitally Remastered' on a CD reissue means
about as much as the 'All Natural' label on food products.
Anybody else have similar stories?

   The RSO will perform in concert at the Museum of Modern Art on
Friday evening, May 19, as part of the Jazz at MoMA series, and at Fez
on July 29.
    The RSO, which performs modernistic arrangements of Scott tunes,
debuted at the Jewish Museum in February 1999, and has performed at
Central Park SummerStage opening for They Might Be Giants, and at the
Animated Music Festival in Brussels. The group consists of Wayne
Barker (piano, arrangements); Brian Dewan (electric zither, piano,
accordion, koto, electronics); Michael Hashim (saxes); Will Holshouser
(accordion, arrangements); George Rush (bass); Rob Thomas (violin);
and Clem Waldmann (drums).
    For the MoMA date, Todd Reynolds will be filling in on violin and
Matt Hong on saxophone. The concert will include special guest
performances of RS tunes by David Garland (joined by Holshouser and
Dewan), and violinist Dave Soldier (of the Soldier String Quartet).
The Fez date will feature the RSO's regular line-up.

    The RSO performs on WNYC's "New Sounds" with John Schaefer on May
11. In the New York metro area, the program airs on FM 93.9 at 11 pm,
