I bought the CD and it is a much noisier pressing than the vinyl i have. The

Right tempo used to do a series of remixed 7"... a bit bit expensive but I
remember extremely weird versions of Mah na' Mah na' by Umiliani with
spacey synth sounds and a sort of neapolitan folk song on the b-side
(urgh)... I think there is a cd collection of Umiliani remixes but I have

There is some kind of remix vinyl in the works from a label I work with but
things are still in the early stage so I am forced to remain in silence for

Not vinyl, but there are two remix CDs on Right Tempo: One is "Mah Na
Mah Na: The Complete Remix Project", with remixes by the likes of Gak
Sato, Raphael Sebbag and Karminsky Experience. Then there's "Sessomatto
Experience" - same concept, mainly the same artists too. Both

You completely misread/misinterpreted what I said. I didn't say I will
never find any, I said that I have never found any YET, in all my years
of thrifting. You apparently have found at least some of the LPs you
were looking for by visiting thrift shops; I have not.

That sentence was rude and unnecessary. FYI, I visit my local thrift
stores here on a VERY regular basis and I stand by what I said above as
being MY experience. I am not in Baltimore (where the population is much
greater in number, thereby making collectibles generally more available),
I'm on the west coast in a small city. And I was not just talking about
U.S. WW releases either. I'm talking about the MUCH harder to find Odeon
Brasil releases! Since 'Rain Forest' went platinum in 1970, there are
about a bazillion copies of THAT LP around, not including the
still-in-print U.S. Verve CD.
You find an Odeon Brasil Wanderley release in a thrift store--you be sure
to let us know...

All that Sitar stuff was actually electric sitar (see also the Spinners), &
I think all recorded at Sigma Sound-either one of the guitarists in the
house band had one or Thom Bell made them play it. Reggie Young at American
Studios in Memphis had one & used it pretty regularly too (Dusty in Memphis'
"Land of Make Believe," Elvis, etc). Conceptually not so "East/West," but
added for the Exotic Touch.
& speaking of E/W, there's also a couple Cal Tjaders; "Several Shades of
Jade" from '63 or '64 has some pretty cool stuff & has been reissued w/its
followup "Breeze from the East." While "Breeze" is considerably kitchier,
with cheesy go-go arrangements under fake oriental schtick, it remains a
great lp for those of us who choose to lovingly embrace these qualities as
well. See also Dave Brubeck's "Jazz Sounds from the Far East." I think
that's the title...

Pardon my layperson's ignorance (I play, but I don't
use any gizmos), but I seem to recall
reading somewhere that a lot of those old soul
records used some sort of device that created a
sitar-like effect with the guitar. You can kind
of tell, because the end result is like blurred sitar.
But perhaps I imagined it all.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ervin Litkei, who composed marches dedicated to
every U.S. president since Franklin D. Roosevelt, died Feb. 8. He
was 78.
Litkei, who came to the United States from Hungary in 1948,
composed several marches -- including ``The President Lyndon Baines

presidential inaugural ceremonies.
For the current president's inauguration, he composed both ``The
President Bill Clinton March'' and ``A Salute to the First Lady
March,'' apparently the first march composed for a first lady.
A music business executive who owned several companies, Litkei
also wrote large orchestral scores, including ``Peace and

he wrote the soundtracks for several films and television

*Harry W. Prichett Sr.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Harry William Prichett Sr., a graphic artist and
creator of the interactive television program ``Winky Dink and
You,'' died Feb. 5. He was 79.
The program, which initially aired in 1954, was television's
first attempt at interactive broadcasting, and spawned from
Prichett's idea of turning the TV set into a toy and teaching aid
for children. The title character Winky would embark on adventures
with his dog, Woofer. Winky usually ran into trouble and asked
children to draw something on the screen, like a bridge over a
river.
The program ran for four years on CBS.
The show returned, with 65 color cartoons, and ran in
syndication from 1969 to 1973. It was revived again in the 1990s as
a video kit featuring newly digitized cartoons and new hosts.
The original ``Winky Dink'' also came with a kit containing a
thin transparent ``Magic Screen,'' which could be stuck on the TV
set screen, along with crayons and a wipe-away cloth.
The show was so popular that it was broadcast on Saturdays and
Sundays, and, at its peak, drew some 25,000 letters a week from
viewers asking to buy the 50-cent ``Magic Kits.''

This is a guess, but the 'sitar' on those tracks is normally one note at
a time, whereas sitars tend to have the other strings vibrating in
sympathy at times.

I'm sure you don't think it was that odd. Or maybe you do.
It suddenly occurred to me that maybe my perspective on this is a
particularly Canadian one, in that most of the music we heard came from
somewhere else. Or maybe it had something to do with a somewhat less overt
"racial divide".
(Not to claim that Canada is a less "racist" society. Just that, like many
things, we don't talk about it.)
But to me, especially in the period you're referring to, it was all pop
music and except in extreme cases - like Wilson Pickett versus Herman's
Hermits - I couldn't even tell what was black and what was white.
Either way though, I didn't care. When people said that the Stones and the
Animals were influenced by R&B and blues, which was supposedly "black"
music, it was like "yeah whatever".
Motown was obviously huge here but so was Stax. I recognized that Stax was
a somewhat "tougher" sound but the distinction was no different than the
fact that the Stones were tougher than the Beatles. I preferred the Stones
but I never thought "oh that means I prefer black music".
That changed. I eventually became more aware in all kinds of ways. But to
some degree, I'm glad for that original "naivete". Now I might refer to
something occasionally as "blacker" or "whiter" but basically, it's still
all pop music to me.

They used a Danelectro Electric Sitar, which had 6 strings like a regular
guitar, but had another 40 or so resonating strings at the top of the
instrument. I believe they also used some special light gage string. The
instruments are currently made by the Jerry Jones Co of Nashville TN.

While on the subject, there's another release along these lines:
Untouchable Outcaste Beats, vol. 1 (don't know if there were any further
volumes ever released). It's on Outcaste records (a division of Tommy
Boy), and they have a web site (which I haven't checked out yet) at:
http://www.outcaste.com
It's got a good mix of old and new on it - Dave Pike Set, Ananda
Shankar, Wolfgang Dauner, and Up Bustle & Out, Pressure Drop, etc...
You can listen to RealAudio clips of it at CDNow, too. It was released
in 1997, but I just noticed it in local record stores a few months ago.

Subject: RE: (exotica) For fans of the like...
Well, in the 60's in the US, there were civil rights issues definitely being
brought to the fore and two schools of thought were:
1. Those who would say it's all pop music.
2. Those who saw music in terms of race.
By the end of the 60's and through the seventies, radio got decidedly more
segregated. I am of the mind that as Rock and Roll became more pervasive
and dominant, genres became more defined, for better or worse. In the
fifties, it seems that it was all anyone could do to get Rock and Roll
records, so color was less of an issue in that regard. In cold, hard
commercial terms, if the kids want that rock and roll beat, who cared
whether it was Fats Domino or Georgia Gibbs?
To be certain, there has always been a racial (and moral) issue as well. If
we are to take the example of Motown from Mimi's post, remember their slogan
was, "The Sound of Young America". One could argue that they did quite a
lot to make sure that they included as many young Americans as possible and
thereby watered down their sound in some cases to make the "crossover" (the
Soul label housed many of the exceptions). Berry Gordy, in his memoirs,
mentioned that he rather enjoyed Jazz, but when he had a record store,
people wanted Blues and he stopped trying to "educate" his customers and
cater to their tastes.
If you are African-American (I am), the success of Motown means quite a lot
to me, in terms of inroads to racial unity and good music. Time has oddly
segregated pop music over time, in other ways, so, having sat through all
that blather, yes, it may indeed a big deal to have Mimi's tastes! I find
Nat's take quite interesting.
As to the post about Tina Turner's music, to each their own, I suppose. I
would rather not have an aspect of my cultural heritage cast off as "funky
malarkey", however. Especially during Black History Month. It seems that
both musical lists I am on have given me promptings of conscience to speak
on racial issues and I would rather leave that out, if possible. I'm here
to talk about Exotica music but I am also here to wade in the shallow end of
the pool before diving in on certain topics (i.e. I gladly take me ease when
say, Br. Cleve posts).
If you don't like Ms. Turner's earlier music, you don't like it and that's
fine. I will keep my loathing of Ray Conniff's music to myself (uh oh...),
but I noticed that even he had played Trombone on a Cozy Cole 78 that I have
and that there very well may be better stuff than what I have heard. So
keep an open mind (I came in to the list with a big bias against Martin
Denny. I had some pre-internet friends who were die-hard Les Baxter fans
and poo-poohed Denny! I now own 4 Dennys. Take THAT John and Dan!) and
let's all be nice to each other on the list.

Apart from that (you can catch the original un-remixed version as
track 1 on "Beat At Cinecitta', vol. 2"), I would absolutely
(and I mean it) recommend to get the Piero Piccioni "O rugido do
leao" 12", featuring original version and 4 remixes (the
"Batucadalbertone" mix, the "Brazilian Beat", the "Tanimoody" mix,
and the "Soulbeat Lion" mix). It's out on "Studio Uno" label.
Other highly recommended item, on same label: "W la felicita'
(english version)" by Franco Godi, with 2 remixes; the original
italian language edit is on Studio Uno's "Third Millennium"
compilation.
Also there's Berto Pisano "Kill! (Kill them all)" 12", with 2
remixes (again on S.U.), but I don't like it that much: early
70's heavy orgiastic funk, instead of 6T's easy poppiness. But that's
just my bag; you can also find different remixes of "KIll!" on a
Right Tempo 12". The Studio Uno man (Paolo Scotti) is an offshoot of
Right Tempo, and seems like that they parted participation to join
competition. I've talked to Paolo few days ago, and he told that he's
now working on a remix of a certain Chet Baker tune.

Tongue in cheek I hope that is said Cheryl.
Celine truly is "Exotica" in it's finest form, exotica is "Incredibly
Strange Music" after all, and what could be stranger than people actually
buying (or wanting to buy) Celine Dion, Lionel Ritchie (although one or two
Commdores tunes were quite good), and at the very worst T'pau I dont know if
they made it big in the states but they sure were over here, and man they
were SHIT .
I would prefer to have my toes nailed to the floor than listen to that.
Cheers

I couldn't agree more as this is the third and best title I picked up in the

This may not be for everyone, but I like his fuzak-ky version of the standard
"Skyliner" on a later (1975) CTI LP called "The Rape of El Morro". It
features a great glossy cover with two muddied up nude models in a trash can
in fetal position. Its great e-z disco and a real hum-a-longer...JB
