the story i heard was that this "House of the Rising Sun" was
actually a women's prison! it had a "Rising Sun" icon at the gate. the
lyrics make more sense in that context too.

Collecting and presenting "bad" singers is the whole raison d'etre of
Irwin Chusid/Michelle Boule's Incorrect Music Show. If you want a list
of "horrible singing" records, almost *none* of which were produced as
a joke, take a look at their playlists at http://www.incorrectmusic.com . My contributions to the show include
Congress Woman Malinda Jackson Parker, Anselmo and Larry O'Neill.

It's not a "cover" by any means--but Pere Ubu did a warped take-off
of this song called "Caligari's Mirror." It's on the 1978 _Dub

Anyone else out there have the "Robert Shaw Chorale - Sea Shanties"
(RCA 1961) Well worth picking up if you see it cheap - Male Carol versions of
all your old sea dog hits.
For some strange reason I really like this record.
Its just so over the top hearing these songs given the full male choir
treatment. (Some very nice nice harmonies happening in there as well.)
Has "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" as well as other standards like
"Blow the Man Down", "Haul Away Joe", "The Shaver", "Bound for the Rio Grand"
etc.

(Reuters, AP) James Bond does it right, say researchers at the
University of Western Ontario in Canada. According to their study,
published in the British Medical Journal, martinis are healthier when
shaken, not stirred. "Shaken martinis have a superior antioxidant
activity than those that are stirred," they say, although "the reason
for this is not clear." But the fictional spy's good health can't all
be from martinis, they added. "007's profound state of health may be
due, at least in part, to compliant bartenders."
A bit further north in Sweden there's an ice hotel, it gets built every
winter only to melt away in spring. Of course they have an ice bar, where
they dont put icecubes in your glasses, no, the glasses are made of ice.
http://www.jukkas.se/frameset_eng.htm
It's run by the same guys who do concerts on ice instruments occasionally.
The instruments are basically crafted pieces of solid ice struck with
various objects, sounding similar to xylophones, marimbas and glassmallets.
Percussive and scraping sounds are produced by icepicks and scrapers.

But apparently, BMG is releasing audio CDs with a new digital
copy-protection scheme... these CDs being incompatible with old CD players
or CD-roms.
Digital technology makes so many things possible, but also enables big
corporations to do so many annoying things.
Speaking of which, the kid in Norway who worked on reverse-engineering the
DVD-encryption scheme has been arrested. Funny thing is, it's also come to
light that the de-cryption program isn't even necessary for making pirate
copies. Pirate copies can be created with simple bit-by-bit duplication!
The encryption scheme seems to really be about controlling the technology
and keeping out unwanted players. Of course, that's not the party line.
Argh. Gimme simple ol' vinyl and oxide analog... they can't screw around
too much with that.

I plugged the above URL into http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/
and got:
Copy protection for audio DS annoys
customers
BMG Entertainment, the music
department of the Bertelsmann
company, has since short
audio DS in the trade, which is
provided with the copy
protection Cactus DATA
Shield. This mechanism was
developed in co-operation
with the Israeli software
enterprise Midbar and
Sonopress from Germany. So
far the albums " Razorblade Romance " of the group of Him and "
My private ones are were concerned " the former Independent
Heroen Philip Boa & The Voodoo club.
The copy protection prevents not only the selection (Grabben) and
a copying of the audio TRACKS with the PC, but also a playing on
all D-CRcOcM-cDrives as well as on older audio CD players. A
reader reported c't that its malfunctioned even two years of old
Philips Player with so protected CD. Particularly annoying: Not on
the covering, but only on that CD one finds the note to " note:
Copy-protected CD - Not at the PC playable! " The warning is to
be taken seriously: After approximately 30 seconds the playing
process at the PC aborts; also MP3-Dateien cannot be created.
At present the c't laboratory checks whether the copy protection
affects also copying by SPDIF Digitalausgang of better D-CPlayer.
Possibly also the seal Compact Disc digital audio is not entitled to
the product due to the disregard of the talk Book standard. BMG
confessed certain difficulties " on request of c't " with the copy
protection. Until these are cleared, no further new publications
provided with it will come probably for the time being on the
market.

I think Lou's Babelfish translation said enough...
And did you read this (also Babelfish translated):
DS destroy themselves
The company SpectraDisc developed DS and DVDs, which destroy themselves after
first playing. The discs indicates a special chemical coating, which reacts to
the irradiation by the laser in the playing device. A chemical process is
started, which makes the data on the medium concerned illegible after a time
interval determined before. The remaining period, in which one can still play
the disk, depends on the thickness of the coating. At present intervals from
three minutes are possible to three days according to specification of the
enterprise.
Conceivable customers of such data carriering are audio and film rental
businesses, which could make their customer commercial contents accessible for
a limited length of time in such a way. Those would have to then return the
appropriate data carriering not even more. Also the software industry would
hereby get a means into the hand, in order to limit the use of out-divided
beta versions temporally

I'm preparing for school (Georgia State University that is) a short video
documentary on tiki bars and Polynesion-themed restuarants. As this is
completely non-commercial, I would like to include some film clips from the
golden era of the tiki bar.
I just spotted a few tikis in GIDGET GOES HAWAIIAN which was aired a few
nights ago on Turner Classics.
There is also, of course, the marvelous Trader Vic's dance sequence in I AM
CUBA. Anyone interested in this should read Sven Kirsten's article over at
Vik Trola's.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) -- Michael Alford, whose pioneering
low-budget travel club helped open the world to U.S. travelers,
died Jan. 16. He was 78.
Alford started Los Angeles-based Unitours Club Universe in 1958
as a two-man operation. By the time he sold it two decades later,
he had sent 1 million travelers to Europe, Hawaii, the Orient,
Africa, South America, Mexico and the South Pacific.
At the time, a European trip cost about $2,000. Alford booked
30-day tours for $800, relying on volume to make up for low profit
margins.
Later, he pioneered cheap trips to Hawaii, Tahiti and Mexico.

For those in the loop...
I've finished side one of my (not very) exotica tape for the ring.
And it seems to have a mind of its own.
And that mind seems to be obsessed with Now Cheese and generic groovy
instrumentals (with a bit of spoken word).
I'm thinking of ending the whole thing with Frank Sinatra Jr. doing a Free
Design tune. What do you think?
Hey btw, just because I've been slumming and stirring up trouble on the
spectropop list, doesn't mean you guys are off the hook.
