Please help me!
where can I find records of Jim Nollman or Roger and Kathy Payne?
I was looking for them for ages, but no result.
Are those rarities or I started to the wrong direction to find them?
thank you,

I would like to make a Hungarian Record Store Guide. Maps, short
descriptions, which is enough I think.
So my suggestion is that we should make RSGs for at least all the
capitals of the Earth to help each other, but it would be great to
collect these
RSGs on one site.
Does anyone have an idea where we can put it together?

Yes, I understand. I just found the word "his" a bit funny. As if you'd call
the Exotica list Bill Clinton's list or something.
Nevermind - it's silly

This sounds like a good idea. There is free webspace virtually everywhere=
. So
why don't you start the whole thing by opening up a RSG homepage and let
others add their pages later? I'm willing to do my best to cover at least
Munich, maybe some other german cities.
You could start with a map of Europe and give any city that's included a =
link
point on it, that leads to the referring page of that city. I'm sure if =
this
idea gets popular many record shops will contact you and want to have the=
ir
addresses in your web site.

No, it's a truly American invention. The man's name is Robert Anton Wilson and
he wrote a Trilogy called "Illuminatus" that some people still think is pure
fiction. I recommend you read it without any further information. I don't want
to spoil the fun for you. (#1 will be enough...)

it's episodes 54 and 58 (not 56) you'll hear at Ron's Site. here are the
Playlists:
_______________________________________________________________________________
Fantastica # 54
title: The beat goes on - identification: Heartbeat
1. Stanley Black: "Berimbau"
o compilation "The basic principles of sound"
o Double LP, Soundsational (bootleg) | +++
o info: Half of the tracks are very good, the other half is
forgettable.
2. Astrud Gilberto: "Beginnings"
o album "September 17, 1969"
o CD, Verve POCJ-2668, Japan, 1998 | +++
3. Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: "The spell of the sinister one (Im Banne
des Unheimlichen) part 6: The space of today"
o album "FutureMuzik"
o CD, Scamp 9724, USA, 1998 | +++++
o Review:
http://bewoner.dma.be/Dada/critiq/A/PeterThomasFuturemuzik.htm
4. Emil Richards: "Blues for Hari"
o compilation "The basic principles of sound"
o see above mention of this record for more details.
5. Frankie Stein: "Lullaby of ghost land"
o compilation "Monster's sounds and 'boppin' tracks Volume 1"
o CD, Marginal MAR 003, Belgium, 1995 | +++++
o Review: http://bewoner.dma.be/Dada/critiq/T/Mnstrbop.htm
6. Frank Dingenen: "Kazoo reklame"
o home-recording "Meester hij begint weer?"
o recorded from TV | not rated
7. Mort Garson: "Pisces"
o album "The Zodiac Cosmic Sounds" (Celestial counterpoint with
words and music)
o LP, elektra EKL-4009 mono | ++++
o info: Excellent mix of spoken word (dramatic, under-cooled
readings about the 12 signs of the zodiac), spacey psych rock
music, some exotic percussion and electronics.
8. Vincent Price (Background music by Ennio Morricone): "Epilogue 1: is
this the dawning of the age of Aquarius?"
o album "Witchcraft & Magic; An Adventure In Demonology"
o Double LP, Capitol SWBB-342 | +++
o info: "Witchcraft & Magic" is four sides of mysterious blabla
about witches and their magic powers. About 5 interventions by
hilarious cliche witches casting their spells while bent over
their boiling "soup". A bit of electronics thrown in here and
there for the spooky effect.
9. The Moog Machine: "Aquarius/Let the sunshine in"
o album "Switched On Rock"
o LP, Columbia | ++++
o info: Moog rock covers of pop hits
10. The Bob Crewe Generation Orchestra: "The sex machine"
o soundtrack "Barbarella"
o CDR, home recorded bootleg, USA, 1998 | +++++
o info: Classic and highly collectable outer space "now" sounds.
11. jingles: "And the beat goes on"
o album "100 Discotheek jingles"
o LP | +++
12. The Free Pop Electronic Experiment: "Chewing gum delirium"
o compilation "The basic principles of sound"
o see above mention of this record for more details.
13. Franco Micalizzi: "Crescendo"
o compilation "Erotica Italia"
o Double LP/CD, BMG/Arista 74321541932/Bistro LC 3484, UK, 1998 |
++++
o info: PROS: varied, 20 good to excellent tracks, lots of wordless
vocals, 2 sitar tracks. CONS: no liner notes, no mentioning of the
featured original soundtrack titles... boo!
14. Franco Micalizzi: "Emmelle"
o compilation "Erotica Italia"
o see above mention of this record for more details.
15. Ennio Morricone: "L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo"
o soundtrack "An Ennio Morricone-Dario Argento trilogy" (Bird with
crystal plumage/Cat o' 9 tails/4 flies on grey velvet)
o CD, DRG 32911, USA, 1996 | +++
o info: "The bird with the crystal plumage" is by far the most
interesting and pleasant of the 3, with nice melodies that are in
strong contrast with the horror nature of the film. "L'uccello
dalle piume di cristallo" consists of nothing more than the
heartbeat and moaning of a woman. It's a shame that DRG decided to
drop 3 tracks from the original "The bird..." LP release in favor
for... an interview with Dario Argento.
16. Dialogue: "yayayayaya"
o soundtrack "Lolita"
o CD, Rhino R2 72841, USA, 1997 | ++
o info: If you think you'll be treated to more of those charming
"Lolita Ya Ya" songs, you're in for a big disappointement! Most of
this soundtrack is so incredibly dull, mediocre hard-core easy,
that only fans of the Melachrino Strings or Liberace might like
it. My advice: listen to the CD before you buy it!
17. Nelson Riddle: "Charlotte is dead"
o soundtrack "Lolita"
o see above mention of this record for more details.
18. Ed Lincoln: "Ya-ya"
o album "Ed Lincoln"
o CD/LP, Musidisc Hi-Fi-2149, Brazil, 199? | +++
o info: Hammond-lead Bossa Nova, not unlike Wanderley, but with
added brass. Funny tra-la-la vocals and some novelty sound efects
on 2 tracks. Most other have "normal" vocals, only a couple are
completely instrumental. * "Cochise" is the most groovy and jazzy
track of the album.
19. Marilyn Monroe: "My heartbeat belongs to daddy (subliminal MIX)"
o album "Marilyn Monroe"
o CD, The Entertainers | ++++
o info: Good compilation of 25 of her best known tracks. Some of
these arrangements, like in "My heart belongs to daddy" (from the
movie "Let's make love") are really great swingin' big band jazz!
_____________________________________________________________________________
Fantastica # 58
title: SPECIAL: Martin Denny (Popeye in Africa)
1. "Mama iti e papa e (from "Exotica III")"
o album "Hypnotique & Exotica III"
o CD, Scamp SCP 9714, USA, 1997 | +++++
o info: Scamp delivers everything a perfect reissue project should
be: 2 original LP's on 1 CD, with the original artwork, and
extensive liner notes. Don't waste money on a Denny compilation,
buy the Scamp series, if you can afford it; each of his classic
albums is worth having, and each and every track is brilliant.
2. "Malaguena"
o album "Latin Village"
o LP, Liberty LST 7378 stereo, USA | ++++
o info: Denny goes Latin, co-arranged by Bob (Robert?) Drasnin.
3. "Stranger in paradise (from "Quiet Village")"
o album "Quiet Village & The Enchanted Sea"
o CD, Scamp SCP 9715, USA, 1997 | +++++
o info: What else is there to say than "must-have!"?
4. "Popeye theme"
o compil. "Television's Greatest Hits" (65 TV themes from the 50's
and 60's)
o LP/CD, TeeVee Toons, USA, 1989 | +++++
o info: Exists on CD, see details in my "eXotica Releases Overview".
5. LEITMOTIV: "Popeye goes to the jungle"
o album "Popeye's favorite stories"
o LP, RCA Camden CAS-1046(e), USA, 1960 | ++++
o info: Great fun album with what sounds like an original Popeye
voice (this is the electronically reprocessed stereo version of
what looks like a 50's LP ).
6. "Similau (from "Exotica")"
o album "Exotica I & II"
o CD, Scamp 9712, USA, 1996 | +++++
o info: The first of what should ultimately be a 12 original album
reissue series.
7. "La pampa y la puna"
o album "Romantica"
o LP, London Liberty HA-G 2417 mono, UK issue, 1961 | +++
o info: "The lush and exotic sounds of Martin Denny" are a bit too
smooth at times, but not a bad record
8. "Danke schoen"
o album "A taste of hits"
o LP, Liberty LRP 3328 mono, USA, 196? | +++++
o info: From his second period, in which he switched from his
trademark exotic sounds to doing light jazz versions of current
pop hits, like "Blowin' in the wind", "If I had a hammer", "Que
sera, sera", "Judy's turn to cry", "Danke schoen" etc.
9. "The young savages"
o compil. "Ultra-Lounge Volume 17: Bongoland"
o CD, Capitol CDP 53413, USA, 1997 | +++++
o info: One of the numerous delights of the "Ultra-Lounge" series
are the previously unreleased tracks, like Martin Denny's "The
young savages".
10. "Llama serenade"
o album "Primitiva"
o LP, Liberty LRP 3087 mono, USA | +++++
o info: Exists on CD, see details in my "eXotica Releases Overview".
11. "Oro"
o album "Hawaiian touch"
o LP, Liberty SLBY 1354 stereo, UK issue | ++++
o info: I don't think Mr. Denny himself was involved in making this
album, but it's still really something. Side A is some sort of
"now" sound, as if recorded in a discotheque, with youngsters
clapping hands to the beat. Cool, but unlike Denny's sound. Side B
is co-arranged by Julius Wechter, vibes player in Denny's group
after Lyman left. There are a couple of wordless vocal tracks, but
the standout is "Oro", classic exotica with a "Afrodisia" sound.
12. "Voodoo dreams (from"Hypnotique")"
o album "Hypnotique & Exotica III"
o see above mention of this record for more details
13. "The queen chant (from "Exotica II")"
o album "Exotica I & II"
o see above mention of this record for more details
14. "Goony birds"
o album "Forbidden Island"
o LP, Liberty LRP 3081 mono, USAs | +++++
o info: Exists on CD, see details in my "eXotica Releases Overview".
15. "Day delight"
o album "Exotic percussion"
o LP, Liberty, vg+++/m- | +++++
o info: I hope Scamp will reissue this LP too!
16. "Quiet village bossa nova"
o album "The versatile Martin Denny"
o LP, Liberty LST 7307 stereo, USA | +++
o info: Not as good as "A taste of hits". "Quiet village bossa nova"
is the best track, also featured on "Ultra-Lounge volume 14: Bossa
novaville".
17. "Simba"
o album "Afro-Desia"
o CD, Scamp SCP 9702-2, USA, 1995 | +++++
o info: Wonderful, must-have, slightly over-the-top Afro-exotica.
With the Randy Van Horne Singers as chanting African tribes.
18. "Cubano chant"
o album "Afro-Desia"
o see above mention of this record for more details
19. "Flotsam and jetsam (from "The Enchanted Sea")"
o album "Quiet Village & The Enchanted Sea"
o see above mention of this record for more details
20. "The donkey serenade"
o compil. "Ultra-Lounge Volume 18: Bottoms Up"
o CD, Capitol CDP 53412, USA, 1997 | ++++
o info: Someone should tell the folks at Capitol to STOP that
horrible practice of mixing tracks into medleys. It makes it
impossible to play just 1 of the songs. Exemple: an excellent and
fun version of "Baby elephant walk" by Al Caiola is ruined by
fading it over into a crap Billy May track. Leave the mixing to
the DJ's, please! Otherwise a very good episode, full of funny
"gadget" cocktail music.
21. "I'm in the mood for love"
o album "Exotic sounds from the Silver screen"
o LP, Liberty LST 7158 stereo, USA | ++++
o info: Denny's exotic sounds doing "Over the rainbow", "We're off
to see the Wizard", "Singin' in the rain", "I'm in the mood for
love" and more.
22. "A taste of honey"
o album "A taste of honey"
o LP, Liberty LRP-3237, USA | +++
o info: More jazz pop covers.
23. "Quiet village Moog version"
o album "Exotic Moog"
o CD, Electronic Vanguard 906 (bootleg) | +++++
o info: Also to be found on "Ultra-Lounge volume 18: Bottoms Up".
album ratings:
+++++outstanding, ++++very good, +++good, ++not bad, +so-so, -yuk

capital but it isn't, really.
Will we include thrifts in the guide?
Will we cop the maps from Yahoo Maps?

Pretty excellent. Side two is a sidelong narrated travelogue of inner
space, as Richards takes us on a "journey".
As Verve is running the Impulse! label, don't expect to see this on disc
anytime soon.

I'm not familiar with the title mentioned above, but I have to say that
I've obtained some Kai Winding CDs on the Impulse! label (one domestic
and one import) and I thought the label did a very nice job with them.
The packaging looks great and the discs sound great as well. I don't
think we have Verve (which was always an excellent jazz label) to blame
as much as the company that's now controlling Verve--Universal.

Indeed I do. News like this fascinates me. I would love to find out more about
this S. Ulbricht and his music. I'll keep his name in mind and who knows, maybe
we can find some more of the things he has written.

Subject: (exotica) Les Double Six
from the CDNow database:
Jazz vocal enthusiasts and lounge-music groovesters alike will delight in
these reissued recordings of French vocalese sextet Les Double Six.
Inspired by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the group was formed by Mimi Perrin,
a Gallic Annie Ross with Jon Hendricks' knack for setting lyrics to
recorded jazz solos -- in French, naturellement. The smooth vocal
consistency of the Six recalled swing-era choruses, but with the
tightly-controlled dynamics of chamber jazz. Veterans of the group include
Eddy Louiss (later a noted jazz organist), Ward Swingle (the American
member who later started the Swingle Singers), and Christiane Legrand
(sister of Michel and future vocal teacher whose students would later
include world music diva Angelique Kidjo). This 20-track collection spans
the years 1959-62, with the influence of their American supporter Quincy
Jones much in evidence, as their vocalese adaptations were drawn
principally from his compositions and arrangements for either the Count
Basie band or his own. On Jones' tune "Boo's Bloos," Perrin sings Phil
Woods' wild solo, but the highlight is Legrand's squeaking replication of
Herbie Mann's flute turn, followed by Perrin's return as a Mingus bass
solo. Some early Les Double Six tracks featured American-in-Paris Kenny
Clarke on such Jones themes as "Evening In Paris" and the
irresistibly-grooving "Count 'Em." Perri sings solo on "Naima," capturing
Coltrane's lilting cry -- and solos, and Wynton Kelly's as well. Sometimes
she remained in the chorus, like in their bongo-beat remake of "A Night In
Tunisia," and on their seamless, gently undulating treatment of the Gerry
Mulligan-penned Miles Davis classic "Boplicity." And on their dazzling
remake of Charlie Parker's "Scrapple From The Apple," the Davis solo was
sung by Double Six member Claudine Barge, with Parker's by Perrin. Les
Double Six, like another notable French product, is still a flavorful
thing, even if it's uncorked after aging 40 years. (Copyright =A9 1994-1999

FORKBENDER (UK):
GELLER, URI: CD (FORK 1 CD). "Uri Geller is known by millions
for his extraordinary mental abilities. He has created fervent
admiration (Prince Charles, the Pope, President Clinton, David
Frost, George Harrison are all friends) and sparked violent
controversy ever since he became a worldwide figure in the 1970s.
This album originally appeared in the 70s, resulting from poems
and song texts where Uri expressed his thoughts and feelings
about human beings, life, love, and the universe. Del Newman
(arranger for Paul Simon, Elton John, Paul McCartney) composed
half of the tracks and arranged them all. Maxine Nightengale
sings vocals on 'This Girl Of Mine' and 'A Story To Tell'." This is
relational to the lounge-pysch universe, especially the cosmic
album closer, "Mood". Listen to this record deeply enough and
maybe you too can develop feelings that just can't be hurt (just like
Jimmy Carter). $15.00

MONTAIGNE (FRANCE):
STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ: Helicopter String Quartet:
Wednesday from Light, Scene III CD (MO 782097). "About the
Work: In the third scene of Wednesday from Light, the four
musicians of a string quartet are airborne in four helicopters and
synchronously play a polyphonic string quartet. They react to the
rhythms of the rotor blades and to the flying of the helicopters by
the pilots, who -- through adequate rehearsals -- can thus influence
the playing of the musicians. From time to time the four string players
play identical rhythms using the same bowing, although it is clear
that they are isolated and kilometres apart. As they play, the four
musicians are transmitted by cameras and microphones to four
towers of television screens and four towers of loudspeakers at
the ground station for an audience. During this -- through the glass
cockpits of the helicopters -- also the world can be seen from above.
About the Compositional Process: Early in 1991 I received a
commission to compose a string quartet. The Arditti Quartet was
to play the world premiere in 1994. My first reaction was -- as often
before in such cases -- that I would not write a string quartet, because
I have never separated form, content and performance practice, and
the string quartet is a typical genre of the 18th century. Similarly, for
45 years, I have not written symphonies, sonatas, piano concertos,
violin concertos, etc. Each of my works has its own form,
instrumentation, performance practice. And then I had a dream:
I heard and saw the four string players in four helicopters flying in the
air and playing. At the same time I saw people on the ground seated
in an audio-visual hall, others were standing outdoors on a large
public plaza. In front of them, four towers of television screens and
loudspeakers had been set up: at the left, half-left, half-right, right.
At each of the four positions one of the four string players could be
heard and seen in close-up. Most of the time, the string players
played tremoli which blended so well with the timbres and the rhythms
of the rotor blades that the helicopters sounded like musical
instruments. When I woke up, I strongly felt that something had been
communicated to me which I never would have thought of on my own.
I did not tell anyone anything about it. Since I did not, after the dream,
have any time to compose, I wrote and drew several sketches and --
from the super formula -- developed the Helicopter String Quartet as
the third scene of Wednesday from Light, the cycle of music dramas
which I have been composing since 1977. Only in 1992/93 did I find
the peace to compose the Helicopter String Quartet, and especially
to made the fair copy of the colored score." -Karlheinz Stockhausen.
[Hardcore Stockhausen completists should note that this record, a
studio recording from 12/7-8/96, is different to the version released
on Stockhausen Verlag] $11.00
