Not much I can say about the tracks: it's the usual Italian library
music from the 6Ts & early 70s that Plastic has been putting out in
the last couple of years. When I went at Plastic's some months ago,
this compilation was right under process. Marco Plastic played it to
me, and I liked it though I suggested to change the track sequence.
We worked on it and adjusted it until the right (at least, what
it sounded right to us) sequence was found.
I think the sequence of a record must be accurate: you cannot have a
bossa tune followed by a psychedelic lament and then back to a samba,
in my ho. The disc must grow in the ear, if you know what I mean.
I understand this is quite onanistic, especially when you can always
program your CD player to a different sequence, but I'm just another
victim of the subtle perversion of tape compiling, I guess.
Where are my vinyl pills?

Music with a Crazy Horse beat by Albert Van Dam and Orchestra
PYE Records 1965

According to the cover notes The Crazy Horse Saloon is the "most
sophisticated strip-tease club in the world"

Strip Club Music. In my opinion pretty good - a couple of very exotic
sounding tracks "Turkish Bath", "Voodoo Doll".

My copy is ex-New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation & still has the track
timings & playdate stamps on it from when it was played on the main
publically owned State Radio Station here.

Theres a small note attached that says when playing some tracks that the
announcer must append some of the track titles.
"Belly Button Dance" is to be announced only as "Button Dance".
"Peeping Tom" is to be announced as "Peeping".

What's rude in Italian or English, is sweet in Dutch. Now 'suor culo',
'nun bum', is not quite the same as 'suor fica' but it sort of falls
into the same category. The Dutch word is 'nonnevot' and it's a light
spherical cake, a meringue, or a lardy cake (English), a doughnut ball
(American), with jam. To be enjoyed with a cup of coffee at 11 am.

Know it, love it, play it all the time. It's fucking excellent
stripper music of various sorts, fantastic arrangments by Les
Reed. The highlight of it is probably "Voodoo Doll", v. fast tempo
roaring "exotic" music, but pretty much all of it is great. Don't
hesitate in recommending you pick it up.

"Game of Death" by John Barry was once available on CD, together with
tracks from, IIRC, an "erotic" film -- the shop I saw this in had lost
the disc (bastards).

The theme from "The Big Boss" is on the Polydor Easy Loungin' Peter
Thomas compilation. I *think* this is the original, I asked here if
anyone knew, but got no reply. IMDB give a different composer, but who
knows how accurate that is? Great piece, anyway.

The only other stuff I have run up against is on an album (LP) on
Sunset called "Great Action Film Themes", which has (I think) both
"Enter The Dragon" and "Fist of Fury" performed by the United Artists
Studio Orchestra -- these are top versions, they have Bruce Lee
kung-fu noises overdubbed.

Mary Crazy Larry and Vanishing Point were particular favourites. I have the
Vanishing Point soundtrack and I know that Two Lane Blacktop has a theme
tune featured on the second Sound Gallery compilation but did either Two
Lane Blacktop or Dirty Mary Crazy Larry have soundtrack LPs?

According to my Jerry Osborne "Movie/TV Soundtracks Price Guide" neither of
these film soundtracks were released.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

PS.  Film Score Monthly now has a killer deal on the other film soundtrack
price guide.  $9.99!!  The thing originally cost $30.00 and is out of print.
Like all price guides the prices are way higher than any one should ever
spend, but it has lots of cool cover pics and is a good resource for finding
out if stuff was released and other LPs released by favorite composers.  Just
search for the Film Score Monthly web site.  Plus, a lot of the stuff in that
cool mag can be read for free on that site.

Peter Risser inquired about the series of prank calls made to
"Red" Deutsch, owner of the Tube Bar.

Multi-generation cassette copies of these infamous calls circulated
for years through an odd assortment of communities: professional
sports teams, country music performers and producers, and the
punk rock world. Teen Beat Records released LP and CD versions
which are now out of print.

A few years ago, the guys who made the calls surfaced, calling
themselves The Bum Bar Bastards. A new CD, mastered from their
own tapes, was released by Detonator Records.

I haven't heard the Detonator Records version, but it's supposed
to sound a lot clearer than the old Teen Beat disc.

Those tapes are now old ewnough to drink at the Tube Bar; they were done 21
years ago!

They were released on LP and CD in the late 80's, from possibly first
generation copies.

Probably the greatest prank tape of all time, although the "Binney Tapes"
are a close runner up.

I have newspaper articles with photos of Red that I got from a guy writing
a book about him. What a world..........

arthur lyman lps for $.50.  I bought a bunch of stuff, including "Brazil"
by Percy Faith.  I have to say that I had no idea what I was missing.  I'm

There has been scant to no praise for Percy Faith on this list in the 3+

Jane honey, I'm soaking in it.
Actually, I consulted my faithful guide to fashion, How to Dress for
Success by Edith Head. Madame lists an extremely useful Color Aura Chart
that matches Hair, Skin, and Eye colors with the hues the smart woman wears
to enhance her appearance. Oh Edith, how could you fail us! There is no
listing for Exotika Red or even wine.  My interpretation? A woman or a
shemale of any coloring can wear Exotika. Recklessly.
Oh, Ms. Head recommends for Eartha Kitt, "'grayed' tones of blue, green,
pink-peachy-beige, ivory." May I add tiger stripe?  Please drop me a line

I don't know anything about this particular LP but I have another
Sam Ulano rekkid called "Follow the Leader Bongos" (Lane 143).
Looks to be late '50s, early '60s, and it's Sam ("bop-bop-bop, bop-
bop-bop, do the cha-cha...!" Ulano demonstrating how any dummy
can play the skins.  In his New Yawk accent (no offense, New
Yorkers), he shows how to do the cha-cha, merengue, samba
beats, etc.  It even came with an instruction book!

I have no idea who this cat is, but I'd sure like to find out.

Yes, exactly - see we are agreeing on this!  My point was they ruined the
availability for those who want to buy the CD re-issues and of course the
scene is now back underground since the rest of the world has been informed
by the music industry that we've died.....

 Also, in terms of the "lounge is dead" message that the record industry has
created:  I think I spent a good portion of my "Angry White Lounge Woman"
column disputing the media-created notion that "lounge is dead" by discussing
the constant usage of "lounge signifiers" in radio opening/closing music,
lounge themed television shows, lounge usage by Nick At Nite/TV Land as well
as advertisements on television - and this point was re-iterated by Brother
Cleve at the end of his interview.

Yes, it was just the way you'd phrased your response that it sounded like
you'd thought I was saying the opposite....


 Misunderstanding #2:

 Which brings me to Mr. Heller's other dispute: that I was suggesting that
the lounge scenesters switched to swing when that media-created craze
"happened."  This is not what I was saying, nor do I believe anyone on the
Exotica List has suggested such a silly notion.  What I said was that the
record industry "moved on" to the swing scene and totally "dumped" the lounge
scene because the record industry for whatever reason, is incapable of
dealing with or promoting two underground scenes at the same time.

STILL?  Did anything I say seem to indicate otherwise?  I'm confused here.
But what I am saying is that I am very interested in observing how lounge
scene was marketed then how we were bushwacked by the swing thing - which of
course the entire mainstream phenomenon that came to be was just a media
construct - and interested in analyzing with people such as you and Br. Cleve
who are "in the know" so to speak.  That is all I was doing and then of
course the frustration of being "out of the limelight" and being told we were
"dead" by the industry because they are too simple-minded to deal with the
fact that they put out some crummy releases and really killed the sales for
themselves in that way...

No, no, no. First of all you are insulting all of us clueless people out
there who do not know how to do such technical things with our computers as
convert vinyl to CD.  I have no experience with such things and many other
people have no idea how to do this.  There are some people on the Exotica
List doing this - there was a whole discussion about this in a thread last
fall.... but I'd say far and wide most Exotica list members do not have the
technical know-how to do this (of course I took no poles, but talking to the
common man on the street at work, at home, etc, no one I know personally
knows how to do this or is doing this.

I don't quite understand how you can take my defense of those of us out there
who don't know how to do this and turn it into a judgement about your
capabilities.... think about that one for a second.

This is the point I tried to make - what seems 'easy' to you is not to the
rest of us non-technical people out there - the comment appears ludicruous in
light of the fact that the average person out there with a computer is not
pioneering how to turn their vinyl into CD.

  That was the entire point of my tirade in my column and which led to the
interview with Br. Cleve: THAT THE RECORD INDUSTRY HAS ABANDONED LOUNGE TO
FOCUS ON A NEW FAD - "SWING"  - AND THUS, THERE WON'T BE ANY MORE LOUNGE
COMPS OR RE-ISSUES FOR THE LOUNGE FAN TO PURCHASE.

If I take into consideration that you stated that you were not only
responding to me but to the other items you've read on this subject, then
what you are doing is making a parallel point - and your point is taken!  I
totally agree with you point.

portion of it in the kind of music about which we are speaking.  I was the
first guy to get a Les Baxter reissue together.  The fashionablility quotient
of lounge music hasn't really blipped across my radar.  Dead? Don't tell me
- -- I'm busy trying to mount a Leo Diamond anthology over here.  I'm trying to
get Robert Drasnin another performance of VOODOO, this time by an ensemble
that can perform it correctly.  If you look closely at the credits for recent
performances of old lounge music, you'll see that I'm usually the instigator
(where do you think Mr Altruda got the Baxter scores? Who do you think did
the orchestration?) -- and I don't give a rat's ass if "the industry" says
it's not happening anymore.  An industry should not have the power to condemn
to death a style of music if the audience exists -- no matter how small that
audience. This music is a living, breathing part of my life, as are the
people who have made it.  Forget the records -- the loss of Les Baxter was a
close and personal one for me.  So maybe I have a personal stake in seeing
that people don't lose the opportunity to visit his recorded legacy.  I
survived two tours with Yma Sumac, whose legacy will endure despite her
chipping away at it.  I've made an investment of myself into this music.  I
may have a different spin on things, because I function within the industry,
but I hold its cynicism about music -- and the people who love and care about
music -- in active contempt.  I've been up close to see people get chewed up
and spit out by an industry they helped to thrive.  This is the nature of big
business, and that's why I have to wonder why anybody even suspects the music
industry will behave differently.  Capitol operates on the same principles
and integrity as Exxon.  Just because they used to use Les Baxter to make
their money doesn't make them nice people.  Now they use Garth Brooks.>>

Skip, I think everyone is well aware of your accomplishments and there was no
need to lecture me on them - and what did they have to do with this argument
to begin with?  We are all aware of the industry's bottom line and that is
ultimately why they jumped ship on lounge - but none of this was relevant to
our discussion and let's not get sidetracked into a discussion about your
accomplishments, or your insinuation that I am not aware of who you are or
that you worked with so and so.  You've made a name for yourself, no doubt,
but this is not the issue at hand.  Stick to the facts, man.

<The future of any music comes from guys in their hometowns listening to it,
turning other people onto it, and keeping it alive by playing their records
(CDs, tapes).  It gets nourished by people making fanzines or booking DJ
nights.  Guys like David Garland (SPINNING ON AIR, WNYC-FM), who keep radio
shows of the stuff going for over a decade are too rare, and stations like
WFMU seem to survive by accident.  What are you going to do? You just do
whatever you can because you love the music, and do it to the hilt because
you care about the life the music takes on (if and when it goes out into the
world).  Consider it your own personal music education platform.>

Break out the violins.... this sounds like a sermon.

Subject: (exotica) Tiki Font

The most-used (or maybe over-used) font to suggest "primativeness" is
probably the one called "Neuland," designed in the 20s by Rudolph Koch.

You've seen it a million times, on the spines of books about Africa, etc.
(maybe most prominently, a compressed inline version is the "Jurassic Park"
font).

I think you can still get a freeware clone called "Tribeca" from the usual
places, including (for mac PostScript users):

Interestingly, Kock was better known for designing elegant roman fonts and
the older blackletter/Fraktur style of German type. But he thought it would
be an interesting experiment to create a rough-looking type directly into
the metal of the font punches. (So actually each different point size
looked slightly different, something you don't get in the computer
versions.) So it is actually sort of related to an Exotica sensibility . . .

hey guys-

not to beat the proverbial deceased horse but i went to Trader Vic's tonight-
a few of you commented awhile back that the Atlanta Vic's was almost always
empty- and well i can attest to that... as far as i could see, we were the
only people in there the entire time we were there, and we had appetizers,
entrees, desert, and coffee afterwards...i would say that the buisness they
do there isnt exactly brisk... the food was ok, honestly i was hoping for
more, the decor was exciting, but again, i think i had my expectations too
high, but it was good overall... i got a couple of bevies...a 'Pogo Stick'
not sure whats in it besides rum, but it sure made my ears warm...and since i
was at Vic's where better to get a mai tai...anyways guys...
