Not wishing to get too far into this, I'd like to recommend Roger Williams's Latin album, 'Amor', which has some really great stuff on it.  Slightly quiet, yes, but with a nice tight, slightly swinging bossa feel.  His 'summer samba' is particularly excellent.

My appreciation of this song has really grown.  The first version I heard was by Combustible Edison, strangely.  And although I'm a big Wanderley fan, I'm not so crazy about Walter's version.

But the Marcos Valle version on 'samba 68', arranged by Eumir Deodato, is simply fabulous...

yes, my passion for Tikis is well-documented, and I am
proud...I guess I am one of those who falls gracefully
and gratefully into the trappings of a tiki-mug
toten',(spiritually)-Fez sportin(I truly look silly in
a fez, though I have one) dames who likes to, gee,
actually have a GOOD TIME and a PARTY to add to the
fun of listening to records!  Why not just celebrate
the hell outta this miserable life!?  Do we all have

Discovery Channel to cover eclipse

NEW YORK (AP) - The Discovery Channel is planning three hours of live
television coverage next Wednesday of something mom warned you never to look
at directly - a solar eclipse. The cable channel's cameras will follow the
60-mile wide path where the sun is totally obscured by the moon, from its
start in southern England, through France, Germany, Austria, Hungary,
Romania to the Middle East and its conclusion in India. It's the most
extensive live coverage of any event in Discovery's 15-year history and, the
network believes, the first time TV has followed an eclipse in such detail.
Eclipse coverage will run from 6 to 9 a.m. ET, with an hour-long wrapup that
night at 10 p.m. "Human beings have always been totally enthralled by
eclipses," said Discovery general manager Mike Quattrone. "But if you wanted
to see an eclipse, you had to be geographically lucky."

People shouldn't stare at the sun because there's a risk of eye damage, but
cameras can safely capture an eclipse. Discovery will do more than beam
three hours of the sun. It will explain the science behind the eclipse and
show how people in each country react to it. The network hopes to climax its
coverage with an arresting image of the eclipse over the Taj Mahal.
Discovery will pull its coverage together with the help of Discovery Europe
and a dozen European TV affiliates. British broadcaster Mary Nightingale
will be the host. The last total solar eclipse in the mainland United States
took place in 1979. Discovery has time to make plans for the next one - it
won't occur until Aug. 21, 2017.

But, if someone were to tape the coverage so that he or she could watch it
later that night (with a cold adult beverage or 2 in hand) and wanted to
turn the TV sound off and have something appropriate playing in the

Right.  It's particularly dangerous when there's a total eclipse, as during
the
period of total darkness, the eye adjusts to the lower light level.  When the
sun's rays reappear they can damage the back of the eye before the eye
can respond.  Drug takers are particularly at risk as their pupils may be
significantly dilated.

This subject has been discussed on talk radio in the UK, and there are quite
a number of people who will be NOT looking at the sun, indeed, going to great
lengths to avoid it, fearing a situation as in 'The day of the Triffids',
where
people were blinded wholesale by some astronomical situation.

I gotta disagree on this one.  Yes, you should not look directly at an
eclipse for a long period of time.  But you should not look directly at the
sun for a long period of time either.  Brief moments of viewing an eclipse
will not affect the normal human eye.

Rationally, there is less of the sun's rays reaching the eye when some
heavenly body is "eclipsing" it.  The problem is that people just tend to
look at the sun during an eclipse because it is something unusual to see.

Pupil size is really inconsequential.  If anything, the pupil will constrict
according to the amount of available light and the eclipse will not trick the
eye into dilating more that it would if you walked under the shade of a tree.
 Even if it did, the difference in the square area of an adult pupil fully
constricted vs. dilated is minimally different.  It is more substantial in
younger folks but still not a problem.

The effects on pupil size by nearly all medications is minimal except for a
few rare oral meds or eye drops used to dilate the eyes (such as
phenylepherine, atropine, homatropine -- and those are prescribed very
infrequently).

Also, the pupil reacts by constricting to available light.  If the sun is
partially eclipsed the eye detects such and dilates accordingly (not
necessarily deleteriously).  Pupil reaction times are quick (less that half
second) so the eye will not be real dilated for any significant period of
time once the sun comes back to full brightness.  You often see the sunglass
folks argue the same point.  They say cheap sunglasses hurt your eyes because
they allow your eyes to dilate and more harmful rays hit the retina.  This
just is not true.  The rays never reach the retina.

There are problems with staring at the sun for long periods of time and this
is documented in drug abusers who stare at the sun.  The damage to the
central retinal area (called the macula) is more of a thermal nature (think
of burning an ant with a magnifying glass) as opposed to damage from UVA, UVB
or infrared radiation.  The cornea and lens of the eye do a nice
(evolutionary) job of filtering out 99% of those damaging rays.

Sorry to be so opinionated here but these "scare" stories have always bugged
me.  Now don't go staring at an eclipse, but momentary glances will not cause
any measurable damage.

I am a big fan of the California Dreamers and I found this album after being
totally enamored by "Wind, Sky and Diamonds" and it was a little bit of a let
down.  So I'm not sure if for me the album suffers from expectations or if it's
really not too great. I suspect a little of both. There is a great version of
Mellow Yellow but the rest of the songs don't really catch my ear. The
California Dreamers are pretty wonderful but I have to say I can't stand Scott's
sax playing, and since it's his album, he really dominates.
I don't know exactly what it is, because I can deal with other similar sounding
saxophonists such as Bud Shank, or Benny Golson in their NowSound outings but
Scott's playing just sounds like fingernails on the chalk board to me. Yes it
has some sitar etc. but the arrangements just don't cut it, Scott does too much
"jazz" soloing causing me to wrinkle up my nose and shake my head. It's like the
album can't decide if it's going to be a nowsound or a pop jazz album and
consequently fails at both.

I should mention that I'm a sax player and so my harsh judgment of Scott may
stem from his style being the polar opposite of mine.

1. Been buried deep in TCM's Summer of Darkness 40's-50's film noir
festival (25 down, 65 to go)and loving almost every minute of it.
(Anybody else watchin?) Noticed Sandy Warner credited as a showgirl in
Nicholas Ray's 1958 "Party Girl," her only listing in IMDB. Assuming its
Martin Denny LP cover girl, but its hard to pick her out of the chorus
line. She was a chameleon anyway on the Denny covers. Cyd Charisse does
a fine exotica dance number toward the end.

2. Though we might be interested in a quote from 1945's "Detour,", which
brings to mind the power of music that was discussed in that long
Bacharach article a few months back:

"That tune, that tune. Why was it always that rotten tune, following me
around, beating in my head, never letting up. Did you ever want to
forget anything? Did you ever want to cut away a piece of your memory,
or blot it out? You can't you know, no matter how hard you try! You can
change the scenery, but sooner or later you'll get a whiff of perfume,
or somebody will say a certain phrase or maybe hum something - then
you're licked again!!!"

Above spoken by the protagonist, former pianist at NYC's Break of Dawn
Club, and the song was "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me."
This rough gem was on TCM last month and will be on A&E in the wee hours
Sat & Sun nights this weekend. Don't miss Vera, the femme fatale from
hell that shows up midway! A real cojone cracker.

3. I'll talk about the music highlights another time. Its like a course
in film scoring, from the old masters like Waxman & Steiner to the usual
suspects like Elmer Bernstein to some surprises like the crime-jazzy
then-commoner Sir Andre Previn. Lots of cocktail lounge mambo music and
so many cigarettes my home smoke alarm goes off.

4. Finally, the sultry sirens & femme fatales are rockin my world: my
new goddess Audrey Totter (Va-Va-Va Voom!), Ann Savage, Gloria Grahame,
Carolyn Jones, Lizabeth Scott, Anne "Honey West" Francis, Ida Lupino and
Lana and Joan and on and on. (Bob Mitchum & Robert Taylor are around for
Jane & Jill.) Damn, Ted Turner is puttin on some bad ass shit.

Saturday, August 7, free tastes of the exotic dishes and tropical cocktails
served in Trader Vic's world-famous restaurants will be available, along
with the Trader Vic's Food & Beverage Products that make it possible to
duplicate these unique dishes at home.

Seely will share his grandfather's exclusive recipes at David Berkley's in
Pavilions amid
12-foot tall Tiki statues and a huge dugout canoe that once graced the
South Seas-style interior of one of the Trader's original restaurants.
Twenty restaurants operate throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and
the Middle East, while seven more are under construction. The original
Trader Vic's restaurant opened in Oakland in 1934. The Trader invented the
Mai Tai there in 1944 and introduced it throughout the Hawaiian Islands via
the Matson Steamship Lines in the 1950s.

David Berkley Fine Wines and Specialty Foods is Northern California's
hallmark purveyor of beautiful things to eat and drink. Both hot and cold
meals prepared Trader Vic's-style by David Berkley's chef Matt Woolston and
his staff will be available for purchase and take-out at this Polynesian
Party, along with a connoisseur's collection of products.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit River Oak Center for
Children.

Music for full orchestra + plenty assorted exotic, strange and electronic
instruments + kitchen appliances =8A But after reading the long list of
instruments on the back cover - from bagpipes and fingersnaps over swanee
whistle to orange juicers and washing machine - one can only conclude that
the result is rather conservative... well, I guess we shouldn't expect too
much from Barbra, and be happy that this odd lp happened, but it could have
been a LOT weirder! "I got rhythm" and "One note samba" combine Turkish,
American Indian, African, East Indian (sitar!), Spanish, Irish (bagpipes!)
and Japanese instruments and harmonics. A classic case of success going to
ones head.

The last time an eclipse came through the Northern Virginia area, I was able to
look directly at it, without using sunglasses, and experienced no problems at
all.  The reason why was there was a thin layer of clouds overhead - thick enough
to block most of the direct sun rays, but thin enough where you could still see
the shape of the sun while it was partly obscurred by the moon.  It was just the
right amount of clouds where I could stare directly for a minute or so and
expereince no discomfort of any kind.

I was interviewed last week by the local Baltimore city paper for an
upcoming feature on Vinyl and was asked what is the most bizarre or
weirdest records i have. I could not think of many on the spot but on a
quick run through today in the sweltering heat i typed this up as i dripped
all over my keyboard and sent it in...we'll see if they use it.
thought i might share it with all you record freaks too.
weird and bad records are not what i seek but i have somehow managed to file
 some away...
a thread of this kind of stuff was going around a few months ago where
 i talked about some of these.
