I still wish she would have recorded her one off c&w show I saw at Xmas 97.
Fay & friends were asked to provide the annual end of the year "special" gig
at a small theatre nearby and she played an exhilarating set of classic and
corny c&w songs accompanied by a bunch of her regular bandmembers (on banjo,
fiddle etc.) and backed with another female singer. Really nice yodelling on
their version of "Are there yodellers in heaven" and the like! Best part
was the set on stage which was exactly made to look like an old American
frontporch, rocking chair, lamp, clothes-lines, sun going down behind the
mountains and tumbleweeds. I only taped a number of those songs from a later
radiobroadcast but I wish I had more. Seen her a few months ago on her
current Dutch theatretour and the new material sounded excellent, the new
album will be recorded this summer if I'm not mistaken.

I just remembered that Al "Tuff Guitar" Caiola did a pretty snazzy
version of "Istanbul." I believe it was on the LP "Have Guitar,
Will Travel."
I'll give Carl Russo the benefit of the doubt and assume he was
joking when he wrote:
"Don't forget the Residents' version--
entitled "Constantinople" from the Duck
Stab album (1978)."
The Residents tune is, of course, not the same as the one we've
been discussing (although it posseses its own unique charm).
Persnickety as ever,

If you think about it, though, to have ONLY those three instruments
together in 1939 probably *was* sort of unique.

My favorite imitator name, and perhaps even more blatant, is The Twilight
Three on Varsity. The other blatant one I have is Enoch Light's The
Triads (one of which may be Dick Hyman on organ; I know he did a Three
Suns knockoff for Light).
There's also a cool Enoch Light Grand Award LP called _Hammond Organ
Spectacular_ by The Spectaculars, an uncredited
guitar/organ/accordion/bass quartet that sounds very much like later,
more hip Suns material, but makes no attempt to be associated with the
"Three Suns Sound." Great loungey cover too.
If anyone has any more leads on Three Suns wannabes, I'd love to have
cover scans/info for my Three Suns site!

There's also a version on _Persuasive Percussion 1966_.
The most amazing version I've ever heard is on a CD I got a few weeks
back by Jowe Head (Swell Maps/TV Personalities) called _Unhinged_ (UK
import on Overground). Deep, growling sinister baritones with wailing,
ghostly falsetto harmonies -- so menacingly over-the-top it just slays me
every listen. There's also a bonus live version of this song on the CD,
which is wonderfully quirky and eclectic across the board. A steal for
the $2 I gambled on it.

Better take another listen. It's a cover alright, albeit twisted.
Substitute the Residents' lyrics with the original ones and you'll find the
rhythm--if not the melody--is identical.
What--you think it's a coincidence?

Hey, we agree on something. We may not agree on cheese but we do on the
Denny vs.Lyman question.
It's reported that Lyman tried to take the Denny sound back to a more
"jazz-based" sound. All I hear is a more polite, more stripped-down,
simple version of Denny. Not in every record. There are some Lyman cuts
that compare to Denny but only when he takes the Denny sound and tries to
go further with it, not when he takes the sound and tries to strip it back.
When he does that, all I hear is another cocktail jazz quartet.
It's not just that he removes the bird calls. He takes out everything
wild, eccentric, bastardized and inspired. Who needs Martin Denny "light"?
I'm sure I'll get some disagreement here but I personally don't believe
that the musicianship of either Denny or Lyman's band warranted a simple
jazz quartet approach. Even when they emphasized the percussion. They
simply weren't good enough to pull that off the way Cal Tjader and some of
his bands could. Or even some of the latin-esque George Shearing records.
Or Joe Loco for that matter.
You have to be better than good to do next to nothing.
Given the choice I'll almost always take the overly-arranged, bombastic,
over-the-top stuff. Sometimes it's too much and I need the relief of a
nicely arranged record by Nelson Riddle or Billy May but I always return to
the less subtle stuff.
In many cases - including much of Lyman - "subtle" is the nicest thing you
can say. It's a case of damning with faint praise.
I don't want to drag Esquivel into this too but I doubt his reputation
would be what it is if it weren't for the "extra touches", the surprises,
the unusual juxtapositions. "Five Corners of the World" - his piano record
- - is a fine record but if you're trying to convince someone of "the
Esquivel thing" don't play this record first.
Today I was listening to "Hawaii Tattoo" by the Waikikis. What a great
crazy record. I don't need to hear another "straight" Hawaiian record.
This however was something wholly other.
And then there's the Three Suns. Play the tune straight or do it like
"Danny's Inferno"? You choose.
I have no conclusion.
Nat

folks in the LA exotica scene may know david ponack from his wonderful
radio show, the Liquid Room (KPFK 90.5 FM friday nights 3am to 6am) and
prior to that the Nice Age which was on KCRW.
coincidentally, david is big big into the soft pop/rock we've been
discussing. along with everything else that gets discussed here pretty
much. a fw weeks ago he played like 4 tracks off of one scott walker album
(the band comes in...) interspersed throughout the same program. he's the
only dj i've ever heard in my life who regularly plays paul williams
(always the last tune). plays a lot of new japanese and related clubby
poppy stuff, bachrach, brian wilson, girl groups, easy, goofy, funky, 60's,
70's, 80's (anyone heard of Telex???)...it's a broad mix.
anyway, he's gonna be on www.spikeradio.com
The Nice Age
Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-10 (Pacific Time)
starting Monday, August 2.
from what i hear, spike radio is actually live VJ'ing. so you can watch
the dj, er VJ, spin and talk to you and do VJ things... sounds pretty
cool. it's not "officially" up and running yet so don't be suprised if you
have trouble tuning in.
and to plug more friends... two dj's lance rock and chris curtis
(hypnotique) will be doing shows Monday thru Wednesday mornings on
spikeradio i believe 8am to 10am (PST).
they will definitely be worth checking out as well. similar to david's
diverse range of styles, but expand on things like in the electronic
department, and aren't quite as much into the vocal pop thing as david -
although i've never heard them dj radio which could be different. they've
been dj'ing in LA exotica stuff for awhile at bars like the garage and
goldfinger's and elswhere. i don't know if any exoticats have been going
besides me. support local scenes, folks! please!
tune in!

March 21 was cold and gray. Claudine had set out for the slopes, but then=
changed
her mind and went to the Center Bar, where she spent the afternoon sippin=
g white
wine. Around 4:00 she
drove home where Spider, who had been skiing, returned a short while late=
r. As
Spider got ready for a shower and stripped down to his blue thermal under=
wear,
Claudine approached him with
a .22-caliber imitation L=FCger pistol, which she later claimed to have c=
ome across
just that morning while putting away some sweaters. She was asking him ho=
w to use
it, how to protect
herself and her children when he was away, when all of a sudden her finge=
r
slipped on the trigger and bang bang boom boom, a tragic accident. Or was=
it?
Not everyone bought Claudine's slippery-finger story. Some locals conside=
red
Claudine to be an intruder in Aspen, and a spoiled brat to boot. The coup=
le's
four-year relationship was said to be rocky, and Claudine's jealous episo=
des in
public had raised eyebrows around town. Claudine and her three children
were getting to be too much for Spider, and he had supposedly given them =
a
deadline to find other accommodations. Claudine did have some supporters =
in
Aspen, like John and Annie Denver with whom she stayed the night after th=
e
shooting, but public sentiment ran largely against her. Like the sirens o=
f
mythology, Claudine was seen as an enchantress who had bewitched and then=
doomed
the hapless Spider.
Claudine on trial revealed, if not the circumstances surrounding the shoo=
ting,
certainly the duplicity of her nature, and indeed the inherent contradict=
ion
and guile of the female animal at its most deadly. With mournful eyes and=
choking
back tears, a pale and trembling Claudine told the jury that "we were
probably everything that a man and a woman should be to each other, we lo=
ved each
other so much. He was my best friend." Claudine saw herself as a victim,
guilty only of mishandling a loaded gun. Contrast this with testimony of =
the
glass-hurling and ski-wielding Claudine, lashing out at Spider in public.
Innocent and mercenary, sweet yet cunning, the prize and the curse.
A detective who was with Claudine at the hospital that night claimed that=
her
initial story was that she had been joking with Spider, and just before t=
he gun
went off had said playfully, "Bang, bang. Boom, boom." At the trial, howe=
ver,
Claudine denied this and said she knew better than to play with a loaded =
gun,
her final words to Spider instead: "You are sure it won't fire?" Another =
famous
disputed quote was by ex-husband Andy, who had rushed to Claudine's side
after the accident. He was overheard to have remarked, "She's always been=
a
reckless chick who drives too fast, skis too fast and takes too many risk=
s." Andy
on the witness stand spoke of
Claudine as gentle and loving mother of their three children.
A diary which had been illegally seized was not admitted into evidence, n=
or were
blood tests rumored to have shown traces of cocaine. The diary ignited a =
hotbed
of speculation outside the
courtroom, however. Prosecutor and District Attorney Frank Tucker claimed=
it
could blow the lid off the case, as well as pull the covers down on a lon=
g list
of Hollywood heavyweights.
After less than four hours of testimony and four hours of deliberation, t=
he jury
found Claudine Longet guilty only of criminal negligence. She was sentenc=
ed to 30
days in jail and two years
probation. Claudine chose not to appeal and served her time in April, 197=
7 in the
Pitkin County jail. True to form, Claudine shortly thereafter became roma=
ntically
linked with her defense

I just got the LP re-release of Savage Rites (from Dusty Groove) and I
gotta say, it kicks ass. Tons of furious percussion and funk layered
by 7ts era cop funk driving melodies and flutes and brass and all that
jazz.
Is there any place local to the US to mail order these from? I didn't
see them at Dusty Groove.
Also, Dusty Groove has In Flight Entertainment at a whopping cut-out
rate of 12 bucks for the CD. Totally Fab for anyone interested in the
Sound Galleries or the Easy Projects, and a price that's tough to beat.
CDNOw carries the others, but at 30 bucks a pop, so grab them while
they're hot.

Subject: (exotica) Cheez and Kitsch
I think one thing about Steve's ascertation about Cheeze and Kitsch is
that he needs to be careful about assigning his opinions to others.
He's assuming that since he finds Esquivel cheezy and the Pow Pow Pow's
and "ping pong clatter" goofy, the rest of the world must also find
them cheezy and therefore only like them because they are "weird".
I don't like music simply because it's weird. I like it because it
appeals to me, and I've spent the majority of my adult life trying to
figure out why, but sometimes, it just does.
I think Esquivel rocks. Not because it's goofy or cheezy or it'll
impress my friends or annoy my parents or because I can wear a fez or
pray to a tiki to it. I just really really like it. Somewhere it
strikes a chord.
I honestly enjoy the music as much as I enjoy Led Zeppelin or Black
Sabbath or Kahimi Karie or L'Atome or Beethoven or Latin Playboys.
It's all good music to me.
So, that's fine you don't like Esquivel and Denny and find them silly.
I find them eminently musical (with some exceptions. Nobody's perfect)
and fantastic to listen to. Hence, the world continues turning and we
share our opinions and learn.
BTW, the cheeziest music I hear today is contemporary adult, modern
"country", smooth jazz, or modern "R&B".
All of that has that same slick sound that just drives me crazy and
which I consder way over the top and just
Cheezy.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Wild Man Fischer was chosen to launch the
project for historical reasons -- the first (vinyl) single and album on the
Rhino label were also by Wild Man Fischer.
Also: pressing numbers will vary from release to release.

Subject: (exotica) Re-Introduction & Recent Purchases...
Just wanted to say hello to all on the list -- I was a subscriber, but
dropped off in Oct. of last year. Good to be back.
Recent purchases that I'm over the moon about:
Mondo Morricone - Volumes 1 & 2 -- An excellent introduction to EM's 60's
and 70's work. Painfully beautiful at times, the tracks on these two discs
were chosen with such care. (Much, much better than the various DRG
compilations!)
Les Demoiselles de Rochefort - The NEW 2-CD remastered version that contains
all of the music from the film, plus additional instrumental tracks. Great
stuff...
Le Meillieur de Michel Legrand -- Compilation of Legrand tracks, some well
known, but several tracks come from rare 10" EPs he made in the 60's.
"Di-gue-ding-ding" might be one of the coolest songs ever recorded.
Le Foto Proibite di Una Signora Per Bene - OST by Morricone.
Charles Wilp fotografiert Bunny - CD release of ultra-rare German LP from
the 60's. Wilp, an artist and the advertising genius behind Afri-Cola,
created this album for private distribution only. I could go on and on
about this, but perhaps you should check out the following web site. It
explains the whole story: http://weirdomusic.freeservers.com/wilp.html
Hippie Goddesses - Not much in the liner notes, but this is an all female
psych-rock-trip-out band from the 60's. Does anybody know anything else
about this? Xaviera Hollander seems to be in the band. Lousy sound
quality, but cool music.
House of Loungecore - One of the many Sequel label compilations of loungy
material. Has a great cover of Pinball Wizard by The Harry Roche
Constellation (now THAT'S a cool name for a group!)
Sorry if any or all of these have been discussed to death already.

Subject: Re: (exotica) Re-Introduction & Recent Purchases...
Hippie Goddesses is not a group, it's a compilation, which has a track by
Xaviera Hollander. This is what I found out about this:
A bootleg compilation of 60s/70s femme-sploited psych album tracks,
subtitled "The most sexciting moments ever put on record!" Features select
tracks by cult artists such as Sally Eaton, Linda Perhacs, Carolyn Hester,
etc. -- as if the compiler went through his collection of catalogs by Paul
Major of Parallel World to find the most obscure and exotic psych tracks
with the female pulse. The final tracks is a bizarre spoken word hippie
encounter by Xaviera Hollander, the original Happy Hooker. Annoying
presentation: no artists are identified by their full name & and the full
color booklet of notes and "era-minded" notes neglects a basic track
listing, giving it a somewhat dodgy feel. "Calling all swingers! Here's a
super sexy psychedelic trippy acid audio fantasy just for you! If you got
off on Beyond the Valley of the Dolls you'll bust blood vessels over this!
Wanna hear spaced out hippie chicks groove to the acid beat of LSD! Then
meet Cheryl, Collen, Michele, Sally, Carolyn, Tobie, Marge, Ruth, Linda,
Lilly, Maria, Xaviera and their friends!!! This CD contains the best and
rarest in 1960s-70s femme psych compiled for the first time for your aural
enjoyment. Truly a dedication to the passionate female musicians of the
1960s. It's Sex-a-delic! It's a Love-In! It's a Freak-Out! It's What's
Happening! Are you man enough to groove with these voluptuous siren's?" In
the name of informational freedom, we have secured the rights to publish
the secret tracklisting for this comp: 1. SALLY EATON: "Flowers In the Air"
2. COLLEEN LOVETT: "Birds with Broken Wings Pt 1" 3. CHERYL DILCHER: "All
Woman" 4. COLLEEN LOVETT: "Women Liberation Blues" 5. CHERYL DILCHER:
"High" 6. CAROLYN HESTER: "I'm Magic, Man" 7. LILLY & MARIA: "EveryBody
Knows" 8. MICHELE: "Smilin'" 9. MARGO GURYAN: "Love" 10. TOBIE COLUMBUS:
"Come In My Mouth" 11. RUTH COPELAND: "Your Love Been So Good To Me" 12.
COLLEEN LOVETT: "Asleep In His Arms (part)" 13. COLLEEN LOVETT: "Love Man"
14. MICHELE: "Believe You" 15. LINDA PERHACS: "Parallelograms" 16. COLLEEN
LOVETT: "Birds with Broken Wings Pt 2" 17. XAVIERA HOLLANDER: "The Hippie"
What else I could glean:
Colleen Lovett was on the Carlton LP Five men and a girl
Sally Eaton was in a cast of "Hair"
http://www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/gc4/nabe_k/cast&staffs.html
Tobie Columbus must have been a dentist's nightmare if people could
actually roam about in her mouth.
Ruth Copeland had at least two albums; both were produced by George Clinton
, Self Portrait and i am what i am
Margo Guryan seems to have been a songwriter as well as a performer (Inn
Tune). She recorded "Take a Picture" for Mala
I hope this is helpful. Welcome back!
