Oooee, you got it!
I recognized the device soon as I downloaded Elaine's page. Some of the
song titles seemed familiar to me, too: the Little White Duck and
Toot-Toot-Tootles the Tug Boat. Thanks a bunch, Lou!
Do any other exoticats recollect Red Raven records from their childhoods or
collect the disks now?

As press officer in the UK for the Mille Plateaux, the label Curd Duca's =
"elevator" is on, I wouldn't really classify this as "cut-up". He samples=
stuff, loops it, puts effects on it, and plays some keys over it. I woul=
dn't say the trax are songs in the Tipsy sense although some comparison =
between the two could be made. He is also not much like the Tape Beatles =
or Public Works. The overall effect is almost ambient or experimental but=
with the melody in tact. He samples from old vinyl so often there are =
scratches and clicks in the loops. The samples are usually one sample, =
not a cut and paste of several. The trax are more like "sketches" than =
songs - usually only a minute or two in length. His first two releases =
"Easy Listening 1 and 2" are very different from the current wave of Easy=
Listenings and Elevators. I know there were soundbites of his music at =
one time at www.t0.or.at/~cduca (the "0" in t0 is a zero.)
Oh, and I did post the list about him say two years ago. But at that time=
, there was little or no discussion.

There ought to be be samples on Curd duca's homepage:

Hearing about this new approach to exotica really disappoints me. Where =
are the people? The REAL musicians? Everybody seems to be on the wrong =
track.
What=B4s wrong with this world, does all have to be "perfect" and made =
through a computer to get some praise? I am really worried. I listen to =
old music because i can hear real humans perform. And they are honest.
If the spinoff of this exotica-boom is techno music, made by =

Its not hard at all. You pick an instrument. Find some friends. And =

Bang the drum with your hands. We've done it for million years, why =

If you go to ebay and search for "red raven" there are currently 7 items up
for auction, five of them with pictures of both sides of the records. None
with frogs, though.

From 5/6/99 LA Times:
Charles E. McKimson Jr.; Warner Bros. Cartoonist
Charles E. "Chuck" McKimson Jr., 84, an animator and cartoonist whose work
ranged from movie cartoons to comic books to animated fine arts. With his
brothers, Tom and Robert, McKimson had a notable career with Warner Bros.'
Looney Tunes Cartoons. He worked on sketches, models and celluloid images
known as cels for Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the characters created by
brother Robert--the Tasmanian Devil, Speedy Gonzales and Foghorn Leghorn.
Born in Colorado, Chuck McKimson, along with both brothers, worked first on
printing and layout for small newspapers owned by their father there and in
California. Chuck, the youngest, also worked as a Linotype operator, but
soon went into animation, briefly for Disney before joining his brothers at
Warner Bros. to develop the Tasmanian Devil. In 1954, he joined Tom at
Whitman Publishing to produce Dell Comics, and six years later established
his own animation studio to produce motion picture titles and special
effects. Active until his death, McKimson had worked in McKimson Productions
since 1994, designing and signing limited editions of animated sports fine
arts. McKimson also made appearances around the country at gallery showings
of some of his early cels, which are highly valued by collectors. On April
16 in the North Hills area of Los Angeles.
From http://members.aol.com/EOCostello/m.html :
McKimson, Charles
One of the three McKimson brothers (along with Bob and Tom) to work at WB in
the 30s and 40s. Unlike his brother Tom, and like Bob, he seems to have
concentrated mainly on animation, with some story work.
McKimson, along with Sid Marcus, received story credit for the Robert
McKimson cartoons Feather Dusted, Dime to Retire, and All Fowled Up (all 1955).

Somewhere around here, I have a sheet which I found tucked inside a Phase
Four LP--it had the complete Ph4 discography, up to a certain (fairly late)
date. Give me a second and I can probably put my hands on it for you.
Of course there might be some differences between the UK Decca releases and
the London Phase Four ones sold over here. . .

Gainsbourg wrote songs, sometimes entire records for a whole lot of
people: in addition to Jane Birkin (of course) and Isabelle Adjani, there
were Catherine Deneuve, Vanessa Paradis, Bambou (the woman who replaced
Birkin), Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter). My favorite collaborations
actually were with two men: Alain Chamfort (Amour annee zero and
Rock'n'Rose) and Alain Bashung (Play Blessures, which is an amazing
record, and Mauvaises nouvelles des etoiles).

I just recieved my Coctails In The Cantina CD today. It's very interesting
to hear the songs in this form, blah blah blah... Some the songs are well
done, but they do drag a bit. I wish their version of "Cantina" was a bit
more upbeat and happy but it can't be perfect. Worth checking out if you see

I believe that was "Cruisin' '61", featuring Boston D.J. Arnie "Woo Woo"
Ginsburg. I had it on an 8-track when I was about 10. The song on it that
sizzled my brain was "My True Story" by the Jive Five. plus, "Hideaway" by

I actually prefer "Luxury" to the first CD. It's upbeat, and a lot more
fun to listen to - there are also all sorts of samples hiding on it,
which are fun to start noticing. It does lean more to the japanese
clubpop side, as opposed to the exotica side, but is still a worthwhile
addition to anyone's collection, if you like that kind of music (which I
do, although a certain other member of my household does not, and he
can't stand listening to this one!)

http://www.pdinfo.com/
Founded in 1986, PD Info (taken over in early 1999 by Haven Sound, Inc.)
provides information and resources for identifying public domain materials.
As part of that project, this site has been developed to help users
understand what music they can freely use and how they may use it. As the
site explains, the rules for public domain use are not as clear-cut as they
seem, and users will find a concise and helpful overview of the differences
between copyright and public domain, and how to identify and prove public
domain. The heart of the site is a 3,000 song alphabetical list of
royalty-free music anyone may use in any way. Additional resources at the
site include annotated links to other public domain sites and a brief list
of examples of projects using public domain music.
RealJukebox (Beta) [Windows 95/98/NT]
http://www.real.com/products/realjukebox/index.html
In what is being widely touted as a turning point in the future of
downloadable music, on May 3 RealNetworks unveiled its new RealJukebox, the
first utility which allows users to play, record, organize, and search for
music from a single interface. Among other features, the RealJukebox will
play music in several digital audio formats and encode CDs to MP3 or
RealAudio while you listen (at 96kps). It also offers an integrated music
file manager and a "Get Music" feature which accesses numerous online music
sources and allows simple downloads. Easy to operate and customize,
RealJukebox will appeal to anyone interested in digital music. Windows users
may download the Beta version for free at the URL above. Mac users, alas,

my answer would be yes.
why can't you do both? or just be content with the "old music"?
we can have an orchestra at our fingertips and listen thru headphones as to
not wake the neighbors. plus since you can do it all yourself it saves
scheduling headaches. and i am an honest guy i swear!

guess it is called evolution.
we won't stop banging. just banging different things.
as far as that thought goes...i guess we should give up typing on our
computers since we have been WRITING for thousands of years.
we all know how great the old stuff is.
so with that appreciation hopefully the new exotica technicians can be
inspired to create new works in that same spirit.
welcome to the 21st century.

This is my very favorite album out last year. Heads and tales above everything else
last year except maybe Combustible Edison and Air. Great mixes, great melodies and
great creativity.
It is much better than their first release. Get it, now.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

Last time I checked (which was yesterday, actually!), they had vol. 1
and 2 in stock. I can't decide which I like better! I haven't heard
anything about vol. 3's release yet - but I believe there are some list
members out there who can tell us more.

That's a very good record, that Mustang Beatles one. Not just the Beatles
covers but the Beatlesque originals.
And the Mustang is interesting period, not just the Beatles record.
So that's pretty good for your first two records. Sets a high standard,
not that you can maintain it once you get into this stuff.

I hadn't heard of this EZ/exotica cut-up artist before, but am now
interested. Is it at all like Tipsy?
It pretty bare stuff, much more minimalist than Tipsy. In my opinion,
it falls more into 'avant garde' than 'EZ/exotica cut-up artist.

Subject: (exotica) Comic Book Heroes
Here's a curious item:
I recently bought a Mainstream Lp entitled Comic Book Heroes
credited on the cover to the Capes and Masks. I was surprised by
the label which credits the whole project to Irving Josephs and
Shorty Rogers, who, from the sound of it did one side each. Side
one is sorta go-go/NOW sound with sound effects and odd banter
mixed in. Side two is spy/crime jazz... and the liner notes are
totally crazy, like narrations from a psychedelic comic book,
deliberately nonsensical.
I wondered if anyone here might have info on this release. Which
artist was responsible for which side? What audience was this
intended for? Is it a compilation of previously recorded material (I
recognize two cuts under different titles from a Time set)? Any info
would be appreciated. Please send/copy direct email as I'm not
subscribed to the list.

Cheap Thrills is located in Montreal, Canada - they have two stores
here, and a growing mail order operation. Highly trustworthy, and good
prices. I don't think the Exotic Trilogy CDs are particularly
inexpensive, however - they're imports from the Netherlands. But I
haven't seen them anywhere else, so it's hard to compare. Maybe Other
Music or Medium Rare have them in stock - I haven't checked.

One of my favorite records in the TV theme category (Warner Bros).
The electronics heard during the open and close of this track are exactly the
same as the effects heard on Frank Comstock's Music From Outer Space, also
Warner Bros.

Subject: (exotica) Cool music on reel-to-reel tapes?
hey all, i just thought i'd start a thread....... (i hope, anyway!)
maybe i'm just comatose most of the time, but i don't remember much talk
on this list about gleaning good quality copies of classic exotica
albums from old reel-to-reel tapes, both "official" reels and homemade
copies taped from albums "back in tha day." recently i've gotten some
good stuff from reels, and have burned CDs of them which rival the sound
quality of some of the recent cd re-issues of this stuff...
well anyway last week i got 3 great Command tapes, all official copies:
Brass Impact! (3.75 ips)
Provocative Percussion Vol. 2 (7.5 ips)
Persuasive Percussion Vol. 3 (7.5 ips)
as i said, i made CDs of these, and they really sound GREAT!
also, i got a home-taped copy of Esquivel's "Latin-Esque." Now, I know
that one is available on CD, but i still find it interesting to hear the
results of someone's adventures in hi-fi in the 60's... it's a really
great quality copy! very little in the way of pops/clicks/surface noise.
anyhoo, just wondered if any of y'all have any cool finds along these
lines to share info about...
cheers!
