You know, I've never seen a three suns record, nor heard of them until
I started here. But I do have a friend who DJ's under the name Danny
Inferno. Who I blame for single handedly starting the disco revival
over here, but thats beside the point.
What I want to know is there anyone who has a spare copy (Nate, if you
don't like it, ship it out, mate) or has a tape to swap. So I'll feel
at least able to take part in this debate whenever it rears it head,
and also so I can play Dannys Inferno to Danny Inferno, and amuse
myself for a few minutes.
Sorry if this is a little late, I'm still getting through the weekends
digests.

Vaguely heard about La Petomaine, certainly never heard recordings.

Subject: (exotica) Suprisingly Bond
I participated in a group fundraising flea market this weekend and
felt it was a good opportunity to get rid of some of my
brother-in-law's soul LPs. I had browsed through the collection of
400 or so albums, losing hope of ever finding any gems after seeing my
10th Spinners cover (not my cup o tea). I stationed myself next to
the LPs on the day of the sell and was eyeing the first browser to
come along when the word "soundtrack" on the back of one the covers
caught my eye. I immediately lunged forward to discover the original
soundtrack of "For Your Eyes Only." Not great, but not bad either. I
began to flip through the covers in this section and discovered that
my bro' had a penchant for James Bond and had collected all original
soundtrack LPs up to "View to a Kill." I quickly pulled these LPs,
along with an Enoch Light and a Neil Hefti Orchestra in the same area
and stashed them in my car. Needless to say I carefully examined
every cover before continuing the sale. Unfortunately these albums
seemed to be his only foray into Exotica. I have learned several
lessons from this experience: It pays to be careful, what you're
looking for in in front of your nose, don't judge a book by its
cover., etc.etc.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Grammy award winner Gilberto Gil has
undergone surgery to remove a growth on his vocal chords.
Doctors told the Brazilian samba singer not to speak for 72 hours after the
operation at a Rio hospital earlier this week, reported the O Globo news
agency Friday.
Gil has had problems with his voice since a gruelling 40-show European tour
last year.
It was not immediately clear if Gil's musical career would be affected.
In February, he won a Grammy in the world music category for his album
``Quanta Live''.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Singer Eartha Kitt turned in a different kind of
performance when she visited Gov. Jesse Ventura, doing a handstand on his
desk while he touted the benefits of physical fitness.
``This is amazing,'' Ventura said after Ms. Kitt's stunt Friday.
``At the age of 72,'' interjected the performer, who was in the Twin Cities
over the weekend for shows at a nightclub and visited with Ventura, a former
pro wrestler, for about 15 minutes.
``I'm here to support his original ideas about supporting common sense,''
she said. ``He's fun because of both his sense of humor and practical common
sense.''
Ms. Kitt played Catwoman on the 1960s Batman TV show; Ventura had a small
role in the more recent ``Batman and Robin'' movie. But the singer said the
connection never came up.

*Ellen Corby
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ellen Corby, who played the tart-tongued country
grandmother on television's ``The Waltons'' and was an Oscar nominee for the
1948 film ``I Remember Mama,'' died Wednesday. She was 87.
Corby, born Ellen Hansen, spent 12 years as a script assistant before
turning to acting. After her debut in the 1946 film ``Dark Corner'' she
worked steadily as a character actor, often playing a fussy spinster or
busybody.
She appeared in more than 100 movies, including ``Shane'' (1953),
``Sabrina'' (1954) and ``Vertigo'' (1958). Her performance as the lovelorn
aunt in ``I Remember Mama,'' starring Irene Dunne, earned her the Academy
Award bid.
Corby made guest appearances on many TV Westerns, including ``The
Virginian,'' ``The Rifleman'' and ``Wagon Train.'' She received a Golden
Boot award from the Motion Picture & Television Fund in 1989 along with
Robert Duvall, Johnny Cash and Robert Fuller.
As Esther ``Grandma'' Walton on the popular CBS television show, Corby
created her best-known role. Grandma Walton was part of a close-knit
Virginia family in the drama from writer Earl Hamner Jr., who based it on
memories of his childhood.
A stroke in 1977 forced Corby to curtail her work on the series. She was
seen only occasionally and made her last appearance on ``The Waltons''
series in 1979, although she was part of the 1997 TV special ``A Waltons
Easter.''
LOS ANGELES, April 16 (UPI) -- Actress Ellen Corby, who was best known for
her role as Grandma Walton on the long-running TV show ``The Waltons,'' has
died at the Motion Picture & Television Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 87.
Corby was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the 1947 movie ``I
Remember Mama.''
Among her TV and movie roles were Mother Lurch in the original ``The Addams
Family,'' the thief who sold Barney Fife a bad car on ``The Andy Griffith
Show,'' acting teacher Miss Hanna on ``I Love Lucy'' and the beleagured
woman who withdrew a small amount of money from the Bailey Building and Loan
in ``It's A Wonderful Life.''
She also appeared in the movies ``Vertigo,'' ``Sabrina,'' ``Hush... Hush,
Sweet Charlotte'' and ``Please Don't Eat The Daisies'' and the TV Westerns
``The Virginian,'' ``The Rifleman'' and ``Wagon Train.''

*Morey Bernstein
PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) -- Morey Bernstein, a hypnotist who wrote the
controversial ``past life'' bestseller ``The Quest for Bridey Murphy,'' died
April 2 of cardiac arrhythmia. He was 79.
In the 1940s, Bernstein saw a hypnotism demonstration at a party and began
exploring the technique as a way to cure ailments.
On Nov. 29, 1952, the amateur hypnotist tried an experiment in age
regression on one of his most responsive subjects, a 29-year-old housewife
named Virginia Tighe.
Bernstein asked her to remember her childhood. After several sessions she
began telling him about a time before she was born, prompting Bernstein to
believe his subject had recalled a previous life.
The hypnotist said Ms. Tighe spoke in a thick Irish accent and claimed to
have been a woman named Bridey Murphy, who was born Dec. 20, 1798 near Cork,
Ireland.
Bernstein's book, which disguised Tighe as a woman named Ruth Simmons, was
later made into a movie starring Louis Hayward as Bernstein and Teresa
Wright as Ms. Tighe.
Various investigations failed to prove that Bridey Murphy ever existed.
Bernstein gave up hypnotism after the Bridey Murphy experience.
*Bill Wendell
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Bill Wendell, the veteran radio and television
announcer perhaps best known for his ``Late Night'' introduction of
``Da-a-avid Letterman!'' died Wednesday of complications from cancer. He was
75.
The native New Yorker and World War II Army veteran began his radio career
in the late 1940s and playing sidekick to stars such as Jack Benny, Bob Hope
and Ernie Kovacs.
He studied announcing and English at Fordham University and graduated with
a degree in speech before joining the DuMont television network in the early
1950s.
His television career also included a 1969-1978 stint with Garry Moore on a
syndicated version of ``To Tell the Truth.''
Wendell was perhaps best known for his role on ``Late Night With David
Letterman,'' where he announced the lineup of guests and the opening joke
that was part of the distinctive introduction of Letterman's name.
Wendell stayed with Letterman when the comedian moved to CBS in 1993, but
retired from the program in 1995.
*Rege Cordic
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Rege Cordic, host of one of the city's most popular
radio programs, died Friday of brain cancer and related complications. He
was 72.
Cordic died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he lived
since leaving Pittsburgh in 1965 to pursue a career in film and television.
At one point, his ``Cordic & Co.'' show commanded 85 percent of
Pittsburgh's radio audience.
He launched his career in March 1943 while he was still a high school
student, nagging radio host Davy Tyson to let him go on the air at WWSW.
Cordic became the show's junior announcer and took over for Tyson when he
went to another station.
He moved to KDKA in 1954, bringing a cast of characters such as the wealthy
Baldwin McMoney, punster Carmen Monoxide and Louie the Garbage Man.
Cordic himself did two of the show's most famous characters, Omicron and
Neutnicron, by prerecording them on vinyl discs and interacting live with
them as he played them back at altered speeds.
Cordic's popularity never caught on in Los Angeles, where his show lasted
just two years. He became a prolific network TV announcer and appeared in
such movies as Woody Allen's ``Sleeper'' and Brian De Palma's ``Obsession.''
Survivors include his wife, a sister, and four children.

*Don McGuire
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Don McGuire, a screenwriter, actor and director who
penned ``Bad Day at Black Rock'' and co-created the story of ``Tootsie,''
died Tuesday. He was 80.
Working in the movie industry since the mid-1940s, McGuire won
Screenwriters Guild awards for ``Bad Day,'' which starred Spencer Tracy as a
mysterious stranger in a desert town, and the cross-dressing comedy,
``Tootsie.''
McGuire also directed Frank Sinatra to a breakthrough role in the western
``Johnny Concho,'' which portrayed the ultra-cool crooner as a coward
struggling to build courage for a gun fight.
As an actor, McGuire was Red Skelton's straight man in ``The Fuller-Brush
Man'' and appeared in several other movies in the 1940s.
Born in Chicago, McGuire joined the Army during World War II, but was sent
home after hurting his back in a jeep accident. He briefly shot photos for
the Chicago Tribune and later worked as a publicist in Hollywood.
Focusing on screenwriting in the 1950s, McGuire wrote and directed Jerry
Lewis' first film after the comic broke with Dean Martin. The film, ``The
Delicate Delinquent,'' has Lewis playing a juvenile offender who becomes a
police officer.
In later years, McGuire and writer Larry Gelbart, shared story credit on
``Tootsie,'' which starred Dustin Hoffman as an out-of-work actor who
dresses as a woman to land a female role on a popular TV soap opera.
*Albert 'Poppy' Popwell
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Character actor Albert ``Poppy'' Popwell, who played
various thugs in Clint Eastwood's ``Dirty Harry'' films, died April 9 of
complications from open-heart surgery. He was 72.
Popwell appeared as heavies in ``Dirty Harry'' and its sequels ``Magnum
Force'' and ``The Enforcer'' before graduating to a police detective in the
series' fourth installment ``Sudden Impact.''
Eastwood, as Dirty Harry, trained his magnum on Popwell's character and
challenged him to ``Go ahead, make my day.''
Popwell's career in entertainment spanned six decades on the stage and in
film. The New York City native grew up during the Harlem Renaissance and
danced in Broadway shows as a teen-ager.
Popwell also had roles in the films ``Cleopatra Jones,'' ``Coogan's Bluff''
and ``The Buddy Holly Story.'' He made appearances on such TV series as
``The A-Team,'' ``Wonder Woman,'' and ``Night Gallery.''
From 4/17/99 L.A. Times:
Faith Domergue; Film Star Contracted by Howard Hughes
Faith Domergue, 74, a sultry brunet who starred in low-budget action and
science fiction films of the 1940s and '50s. Born in New Orleans, Domergue
moved to California with her family when she was 6. She was 15 when Howard
Hughes noticed her on the Warner Bros. roster of actors and signed her with
RKO. Called the "champion mystery woman among Hollywood players" by Times
film writer Edwin Schallert in 1950, Domergue was given a big publicity
buildup and kept under contract by Hughes for a decade before he gave her a
starring role. He finally cast her in the lead of "Vendetta," a 1950 release
about a girl sworn to avenge a murder. Other films she made in that era
included "Where Danger Lives," "Cult of the Cobra," "It Came From Beneath
the Sea" and "This Island Earth." She retired in the late 1950s but returned
to the screen in the 1960s and '70s, largely in supporting roles in such
films as "Track of Thunder," "Legacy of Blood" and "House of Seven Corpses."
She was married twice, in 1947 to Argentine director Hugo Fregonese and,
after that marriage ended in divorce, in 1963 to businessman Paola Cossa,
who maintained homes in Switzerland and Spain. She moved to Santa Barbara
after Cossa's death in 1992. Domergue is survived by two children, Diana and
John Fregonese, and two grandchildren. On April 4 of cancer in Santa Barbara.

I saw this on the local (Twin Cities) news, and it *was* astounding. Eartha
looks mighty good for 72!
Her show was terrific as well, according to a review in one of the local
papers. I wanted to go, but I think the cheapest ticket was in the $50
range.

One is. The other member is an ex-tarmaccer (if that's a word) from

Their choice of records wasn't up to much either.

Post away, but I hafta say I thought this one was fairly disappointing.
Great cover, but the music and the singing were fairly plain.
Her RCA album _Life Is Just a Bed of Neuroses_ was a bit more interesting,
with music arranged and conducted by Ray Martin. That one seemed a bit more
energetic and the music itself had some humor to match the lyrics--which
particularly in "Love that Man" are quite warped.
Of course, no one should listen to me, since I'm one of those hopeless
trendies who actually listens to sucky Three Suns records like _Fun in
the Sun_ . . .

Well, I just have to say that taste differ. Me for instance? I can enjoy a
Schlitz (not Bull) as a retro drink on Friday afternoons, Mai Tai's on
Saturday (preferably before breakfast) and (a shaken God dammit) martini at
cocktail hour on Saturday evenings. The varied opinions on this list will
possibly find one (if not all??) of the drinks unenjoyable (or as some may
say: "LAME LAME LAME").
Well, I got news for you. I happen to enjoy the Polynesian Percussion LP
immensely. I have found it an appropriate bridge between Denny and Baxter.
And I like both of those too. I have never liked the twangy Hawaiian music
much but this "toned down" Hawaiian LP has some of the merits of Hawaiian
music without the twang.
And get this. A hard core rock friend of mine nearly lost his lunch when I
played some Denny and Baxter for him. Baxter was too "orchestrated" and
Denny was too
"stupid and silly" (his words obviously). He did like the Cates album tho
because it reminded him of the islands without being so "God-awful Hawaiian
tourist-like". That was about a year ago.
And what has happened to that friend? Well, I made him a tape of Cates and
he eventually asked for one of Denny and then Baxter. Go figure. Now he
loves them both.
My point is this: there is some real shitty music out there in my opinion
and lots of you jokers just love it. As Chuck for NO might say, "OK by me
if it's OK bayou." I just don't like when one's opinion is "offered" as the
definitive statement.
The next time just add "I think" to the phrases suck, blows or "is lame".
Geez, I get tired of making this same post every few months or so. So, let's
get out of the bathroom.

Well, the music is certainly repetitive, but I don't think it's boring at all.
You have to be in the mood to listen to this. Have tried listening to the
records without doing something else? Just listening and relaxing? Try it!

Nope, they weren't. Not many records were released on 78 in 1964...
I would also love to find the original records, but I'm more than happy with

I have heard Pops in Japan by the Ventures sometime ago in Tokyo. It's
rather amusing record! They cover old Japanese 'enka' pop songs. Are
there any other "Western" pop music makers who made records totally for the
Japanese market. My wife, who is Japanese, told me that the lead 'boy'
actor in Death In Venice made a couple of records for the Japanese market.
Also the actress who was in the Tony Danza (sp) tv show made some
recordings ...

Some people find the SSFB LPs interesting because they predate a
'modern' minimalist form of electronic music (called 'ambient') by many
years. This kind of music, by definition, is extremely repetitive.
Additionally, these recordings were made using very early electric
music machines that RS designed & built. (The Moog Synthesizer, for
example, hadn't been invented yet...)
And others are curious about RS's life & musical projects (other than
his 1930's Quintette).
SSFB Volumes 1, 2, & 3 are also available - SEPARATELY - on CDs.
Basta's vinyl reissue is limited to only 1500 copies, & I think it is mainly
for the 'hardcore' fans who already knew what SSFB was.

For another version of "Gunslinger", try the Limeliters. It's quite funny!
It's on "The Slightly Fabulous..." I believe. Another plus is Lou
Gottlieb's droll commentary.
