Here's a page for Bobby Conn:

and another one:

He's got another show in Chicago soon,

Jane Fondle, back from a "I have nothing to add" hiatus. But while we are
on spoken word-weirdness on the Bomp! list, how about that "I like" MIKE
DOUGLAS! He's got at least two that I know of, "The Man in My Little Girls
Life," (getcher hankies out)...and the star-striped patriotic pathos in
"What is a Square?"...where he gladly proclaims himself a "square" because
of his love of God and country, etc.!
On to biker films and Jane Birkin: Nobody, much to my amazement, has
mentioned the Russ Meyer MOTORPSYCHO...much underrated, I believe(and
thanks for bringing up PYSCHOMANIA, a true, uh, classic.) Re: JBirkin, I
have a dubbed copy of her and Serge's wacky-comedy caper, "Seduction
Squad!" Too goofy and not what you would expect from a couple who has an
S&M layout in an early 70s OUI magazine! A great soundtrack, too, by
Serge, for you fans of the dubios Moog synth. Does anybody know where I
can get a copy of ROCK AROUND THE BUNKER, too, for under $20(reissue,
obviously!)
Jane Fondle, who wishes she was Serges' ex!

I enjoyed the exoticat's post that said he likes to go to sleep
listening to the Gentle People. What a great group to listen to at
bedtime. I've tried them myself with wonderful results.
These days my number one choice is Alpha's "ComeFromHeaven"
(Melancholic 1997)
Soft exotica vocals from a modern diva, mixed with gentle electronics.
It puts me off in la la land very quickly. Thanks to Vic for a
great suggestion at a great site.
I don't like Alpha's "Pepper" album. Too much noodling electronica
remix. This has been done before, too many times.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

Ahem......
Let's clarify things here a little bit.......
George Cate's "Polynesian Percussion" is PEDESTRIAN, there are only a few =
tracks that are worthy of a second listen.......
That said, I promise to re-listen to the entire album this weekend - =
remember what happened when I gave Stanley Blacks' (Awwww, what the hell's =
the name of that album, "Exotica" or something.........on Phase 4, =
gatefold, etc.......) anyway, "that" album. I slammed it, but now like it =
a lot.
- - Nate (not Nat - always up for a good fight!!!) And also, the Three Suns =
SUCK! It's just "cool" and "trendy" right now to like them - and if you =
live in Baltimore, you remember they used on of their songs for the =
opening of "Captain Chesapeake."
And you know those "Space Age Pop" comp. CD's - They suck too!
They're PEDESTRIAN, a real yawn fest. Those "percussion" gimmick albums =
are a bore...........
(Okay, attack! Attack!............everybody have a great weekend......)

Two I like are Tomita's funky little version and the recently issued

on a related note, until recently i had a record called "Empire Jazz"
which was recorded in 1980 and featured some fairly well known jazz
musicians doing small-combo versions of Star Wars music. the best part
about the album was the cover: a painting of Darth Vader sipping
cocktails at a lounge watching a band consisting of Chewbacca on piano
(?!), C3PO on upright bass, R2D2 on drums and a Stormtrooper on sax!!!
I think i kept a scan of this cover if anyone wants to see it....... i
just have to dig it up first.....

Subject: (exotica) Tulsa Tiki quest?
I received this email and not being able to help am asking if someone out
there may know. If so please email Lorrie and cc me
thanks
Otto
I grew up in Tulsa and moved away about 12 years ago. Since moving away
from Tulsa I have gotten into Tiki Bars. I have vague memories of a
Chinese/Polynesian restaurant at the corner of 41st and Memorial. I
think it might have been called "Jade East". When I lived in Tulsa I
happen to step inside this place to see if I could find a phone to use
and thought it was very unusual. But, not knowing what a Tiki bar or
restaurant was at the time I did
not appreciate it for what it was. Years later I went to Tulsa for a
visit and tried to track this place down and found to my great
disappointment that it had been torn down and replaced by a Burger King.
Can anyone give me some background on this place? Did they serve Tiki
Drinks like Zombies, Blue Hawaiians, Mai Tai's?-(Well probably not
alcoholic ones since Oklahoma did not have liquor by the drink when I
was growing up there.) If they did serve some type of Tiki Drinks were
they served in fancy mugs? I would be interested in memories, photos,
or stuff like matchbooks, mugs, etc... from this place. You can reach
me at:

SUCK! It's just "cool" and "trendy" right now to like them
I'm not sure you can call something "trendy" when there's less than a
thousand people on the planet who are into something.
Having said that, I put up my fists and declare "They do NOT suck!"
Of course "WHEN they suck, they suck bigtime. When they suck, they suck
bigger than anyone else"
But when they don't suck, they can blow your mind. The first time I heard
"Danny's Inferno" it was on some tape and I didn't know it was them and I
was asking everyone "who the hell is this???"
I don't know if the fascination with them comes from the amazing tunes like
that or from the mystery over how a band who so often SUCKS, comes up with
such shocking gems. I can't think of any other band who can go from utter
crap to sheer inspiration and back to utter crap in the course of a single
album side.
It was like the Devil possessed them on occasion.
But did the Devil inspire the utter crap or the shocking gems?
Nat

Subject: (exotica) [obit] Skip Spence
from SF Chronicle
- ---------------------------------------
Skip Spence -- Jefferson Airplane Original Member
by James Sullivan
Saturday, April 17, 1999
Skip Spence, an original member of the Bay Area rock groups the
Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape, died yesterday afternoon at
Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, where he had been fighting a number
of ailments. He would have been 53 tomorrow. His death comes just
weeks before the release of ``More Oar,'' a CD tribute to Mr. Spence
featuring Beck, Robert Plant, Tom Waits and members of R.E.M., among
others. The record was inspired by ``Oar,'' Mr. Spence's unique,
folk-psychedelic solo album from 1969, which will soon be reissued.
The musician, who had long battled schizophrenia and alcoholism, was
living near Santa Cruz with his girlfriend.
The official cause of death was advanced lung cancer, said Mr.
Spence's son Omar, although Mr. Spence was was found to have
pneumonia, congestive heart failure and other afflictions and had been
on a ventilator since entering the hospital April 5.
``His body just gave out,'' said Omar Spence. ``We tried our best to
extend him, but it got to the point where it would have been inhumane.
Anybody can live on life support, but that's not living.''
Before Mr. Spence's death, some members of his inner circle were
suggesting that his health care had not been adequate, but Omar Spence
denied that.
``He was treated like a president the last week and a half. He got
ultimate medical care.''
In 1965, Alexander Lee ``Skip'' Spence, born in Ontario, Canada, was
set to audition as a guitar player for Quicksilver Messenger Service
when another local musician, Marty Balin, invited him to play drums in
his new band, the Jefferson Airplane. Mr. Spence had never played
drums before but learned quickly; on ``Oar'' he plays every
instrument.
After being tossed from the Airplane for irresponsibility, Mr. Spence
became a founding member of Moby Grape, for a time the most celebrated
rock band in America. Later, he gave another Bay Area band, Pud, a new
name -- the Doobie Brothers.
In recent years, Mr. Spence was a conservatee of Santa Clara County
because of his mental health, and he was often homeless. But he was
sober for almost two years, said his son.
``He licked alcohol,'' said Omar Spence. ``In his schizophrenic state,
that was quite a feat, a very strong thing to do.''
Reprise Records executive Bill Bentley, an avowed fan who helped
compile the tribute album, said he traveled to Santa Cruz a few days
ago to give Mr. Spence a copy of the record.
``He was unconscious. He looked very peaceful.''
Mr. Spence's four children -- Omar, 31; Aaron, 34; Adam, 33; and
Heather, 29 -- his ex-wife and his current girlfriend were all with
him at his time of death. They played the tribute record during Mr.
Spence's final hour.
``My dad knew he was good,'' said Omar Spence. ``He was still a star,
to the day he died.''
Those interested can make donations to help defray medical costs:
Comerica Bank-California, Attn: Marilyn Guzman, 1960 41st Ave.,
Capitola, Calif. 95010. Checks should be made out to Omar
Spence/Trustee, I.T.F. Alexander Lee ``Skip'' Spence.

people like Robert Maxwell, Enoch Light, Leo Addeo, Dick Schory, and Marty
Gold
among others. and i like the pack rat i am will keep an album for just one

the two albums where you get more bang for your suck are "Movin' + Groovin"
and "Fever + Smoke"
do they have any more titles with two words added together...
they might be pretty good too?
