Ok, Hugh. Look at the mess you've created with all your BOC talk. I am
confused, am I on Exotica, or the KERRANNNGG list?
;^<>
Anyway, the truth is out about you, Hugh. We all know that you were a
seminal member of Hawkwind. Happy new year to ya'!
OK-let's talk Led Zeppelin! Chances are, you all own records with Jimmy
Page, as he was a studio string player in the 60s, and I believe, plays
violin on Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual."
John Paul Jones also arranged for Francoise Hardy.
Don't worry, Hugh! That Quiet Riot revival is gonna be Hugh-e in '99!

I wonder if it was a recycling of earlier GNP/Crescendo LPs.
I *love* the one Billy Strange LP I own: _Goldfinger_ by "The Big Sound
of Billy Strange, His Guitar & Orchestra." Decent-to-fabulous orchestral
go-go rock ("The Jerk" "Come See About Me," etc.) and spy/TV/movie themes
(title track, Munsters, Peter Gunn). Another LP, _James Bond Theme/Walk
Don't Run '64_ pictured on the back also looks REALLY promising.

Well I'm afraid to mention these on the chance that you already have them
and find them awful but... I recommend "Beautiful in the Rain" by the Tony
Hatch Sound (Pye) and particularly for one spectacular cut "An Occasional
Man". They're not as good but I also like "A Latin Happening" (Pye) and
this another one with the same Latin Happening title on Golden Hour.
(What's with this anti-Hatch sentiment here lately anyway?)

I have it on LP and I'm not sure what you mean by "worth it" but I wouldn't
spend big money on it myself. I'd say it's "interesting" more than good.
I like Rosemary Clooney but I don't think she's at her best here. And as a
Prado record, it's not that special either. It's kind of neat to see him
staying in the background and doing mostly subtle backup but that's not
what I want from him. It's an interesting mixture but not a great record,
I think.
Having said that, I'm almost sure there'll be disagreement on this one.
>Is there a good Billy Strange LP to be had?}d the Roger Miller tribute

I just mentioned this the other day. "Folk Rock Hits" on GNP/Crescendo,
which includes "Eve of Destruction" and "All I really want to do" has some
of the thickest, fuzziest guitar you're likely to hear anywhere. I also
have one called "James Bond Double Feature" which isn't bad but it doesn't
touch the other one.
And as I said the other day, I wasn't too impressed by the compilation CD,
called I think "Strange Country".
>Oh wait one more!!!! Is therre a good record CD shoppe in Lonbdon
>Ontario??? Uh, spell that London.
I'm sure there is. Pretty sure anyway. I'll tell you one thing about
London. The world's only Sparton Records collector lives there. (Sparton
distributed a lot of labels in Canada including London and Command )
If no one else comes up with anything, contact me privately and I'll ask
around. Af friend of a friend did own a store there so I should be able to
get some info.

Oh mercy yes. The Ventures' wild fuzzed-out version of "Summertime Blues"
begins with some VERY ominous heavy-metal power chords. . . That's on
_Flights of Fantasy_, another entertaining Psych turn for them (though I

Subject: (exotica) Living Percussion
I bought a carload of vinyl at Boxing Day sales but I think I'm probably
only going to mention one.
Living Percussion "The Beat Goes On".
Who knew that among the Living records, there was a percussion one? I was
actually excited but then I'm a big fan of the Living.
The range of tunes is a bit wide for my taste.
The first cut "Quiet Village" is probably the best "extreme" version of
that tune that I've ever heard. If you're a Quiet Village fan, you really
have to hear this.
Then the next cut is even better. "Green Tambourine", arranged by Dick
Hyman, (who I was just maligning the other day) and with all kinds of cool
touches like electric sitar etc.
So it's kind of disappointing when the next cut is "White Silver Sands".
There are a couple more pretty great tracks, including the title cut but
there are also a few more mediocre "big band" cuts. It's baffling how they
got on the same record as those amazing first two cuts.
Now I'm wondering whether there are even a few more records in the bunch
worth mentioning.
Okay there's one. "Goldfinger and other... James Bond Thrillers" by Ray
Martin. Not up to his Stereo Action standard but not bad.
More typical of the haul was this Cugat record called "Cugat Touch" on the
Springboard label. I'm almost certain that Cugat was dead when this record
was made. Unless there was another Xavier Cugat.
(I just got a box of about 80 records that my friend Harvey can't give away
in Cleveland. Maybe they'll be something worthwhile there. Cleveland does
sound like a cheap record haven, especially this store he's told me about
called "Records")
Anyway, happy New Year to all.
Oh by the way, when Prince sang "Party like it's 1999" do you think that he
meant tomorrow or did he mean NEXT New Year's when we'll bring in the
millenium?
I hope he meant next year because at least that'll give me one more year to
try and find something to do.
Then again, what makes me think he was referring to New Year's at all?
You know, when I bought that record and 1999 seemed so far away, I actually
did think that I'd have some great party to go to.
Nat... spending new year's in a chat room probably

Truth and Lies at Age Ten
August 7, 1998
Episode 108
Two stories of children lying to themselves and others. A woman who'd been
diagnosed with cystic fibrosis talks about the lies she told herself as a
child. And Dan Gediman tells the story of how he was cast in the public TV
show "Zoom," which aired from 1972 to 1979, at the age of ten. Then he was
cut from the cast, before the show ever went on the air. So for years, he
lied about it. He let friends believe he was on "Zoom." In this special
half-hour story, produced by Jay Allison as part of his "Life Stories"
series, Gediman tracks down the original "Zoom" cast members, to find out
what his life would've been, if he had achieved his childhood dream of being
on "Zoom."

Oddly enough, I only own (knowingly) one record which has Jimmy Page

London.
As to the charges raised of pushing this list into metal territory, I plead
'not guilty' on the grounds that I've never knowingly heard a record
by Blue Oyster Cult or Hawkwind! For all I know, they could be
Lawrence Welk sound-alikes! How about Blue Welk Cult?

Don't think that was John Durrell... I think he came from a band called
"The Five
Americans". The keyboardist on the earlier Ventures items might have been a
guy called Mike Melvoin. Think he was a musician and studio tekkie too.
Sunset Records: The UK Sunset first tranche of issues included a "Liberty's
greatest hits" type album which had an electronic stereo version of Patience
and Prudence's "Gonna get along without ya now". This was both awful and
brilliant with the strings interlude in the middle of the record sort of
swirling
from the right to the left channel.

A bit of synchronicity here. I just had my best of 1998 program last

Yes I'm an unabashed Ray Martin fan.
This album is so great. Some of the best Bond music interpretations.
Imagine the James Bond Theme where vocalist mimic the signature guitar
theme! This album also features some excellent arrangements of tunes from
the film Goldfinger not found on the original soundtrack: Galore's
Theme,Honey's Theme. And as if the music isn't enough the cover features
a sexy chick-with-gun reproduced in monochrome gold on black. Stunning.
Where Esquivel may have background singers that sing Zoom Zoom, when Ray
Martin's background singers go "Ooooeee", it is one sexy sound.

A friend of mine recently found a cheap and easy way to make a cool

Go to a costume or Halloween type party store and buy a plastic pilgrim

_Let's Dance the Bossa Nova_ (1963) Sequel to _Big Band Bossa Nova_, which
I admit I haven't heard. And I'm not sure I'll be going out of my way to
find it, either. Now, isn't the whole point of Bossa the "lightness" of
it? So what is the deal with these massive trombone parts? I do admit that
the Enoch/Lew Davies original "Big Ben Bossa" achieves a certain swanky
sophistication--but otherwise this one did nothing for me.
_Far Away Places, Vol. 2_ (1963) Volume one was a big favorite of mine,
with its piercing harpsichord and alarmingly perky "la la la" vocals. It's
quite insane. Well, volume two actually holds up fairly well: "Istanbul"
and "Celito Lindo" are real keepers. And the egregiously racist
Light/Davies original "Ching Ching Ching Chow" must be heard to be believed.
_Pertinent Percussion Cha Cha's_ (1960) This really ought to be called "I
Want To Be Happy Cha Chas Vol. 3," because it's directly descended from
Enoch's earlier Hammond-fueled masterpieces on the Grand Award label. But,
this one is in scintillating Command stereo! Unfortunately, the cowbell &
guiro players must've been exiled to the back of the room, because this one
just doesn't have the tangy bite of the earlier disks. Some of repertoire
is frankly dippy, too: "Charleston Cha Cha"? Please. But once again it's
the Light/Davies original "Travel Now, Pay Later" which may be the high
point of the disk.
_Persuasive Percussion Vol. 3_ (1960) I remain, *sigh*, un-persuaded.
They seem to be going for a certain finger-snapping cool, but I just found
it dull. Where are the latin numbers? This one is a keeper only for its
very peculiar "Hawaiian War Chant," utilizing this odd instrument which
periodically goes, "Whub." No home can have too many weird versions of
Hawaiian War Chant.
Trivia note: _Far Away_ had the original price sticker on it, for $4.49. So
I became curious what that would equal, in 1998 dollars. Well, if I read
the fine print correctly at: http://stats.bls.gov/cpihome.htm , $4.49 in
1963 dollars would equal about $19.57 today.
Going back to _Persuasive Vol. 1_,

I know there's a Beach Boys contingent on here so...
Saturday night at 10:00pm and 4:00am, AMC is airing a "lost" Beach Boys
concert from March 1964 -- originally a closed-circuit broadcast to movie
theaters.
This is partly to publicize a new AMC spin-off channel called "American
Pop!" ... "dedicated to 20th century pop culture."
First I've heard of it.

Also by Mullendore - who did _Burke's Law_. My fav cut on _Burke_ is "Drum

Mike Melvoin is Wendy's dad (that's Wendy Melvoin erstwhile Revolutionary with

Subject: (exotica) Ventures etc.
Just wanted to chime in on the Ventures thread. I've steadily been
building up my collection (as long as I don't have to pay over $4 an
album), and I find the band members' originals are consistently far
superior to their covers. Things like "Night Stick" on "a Go-Go" are just
terrific, particularly when compared to just about anything on
"Telstar/Lonely Bull," which was my first Ventures and probably the reason
I avoided them for the next five years.
To jump on Ross' comment about the unknown albums providing the greatest
thrill, I have to say "Man from O.R.G.A.N." is definitely a "holy grail"
item deserving of heavy rotation. On the other hand, I've found there are
a number of such albums that I collect for the sake of having them, not
listening to them.
There. I've said it.
My name is Brad and I'm a ... collector.
(This is not news to my wife, however.)
To plug a recent unknown find, I have been delighting in "The New Sound of
Chano Scotty and his Combo Latino" on Musicor. Produced by Tito Rodriguez.
The notes say Chano was a percussionist who played with Cugat and Carmen
Cavallaro before starting his own group in 1962. The music is a blend of
now sounds, bossa nova, and latin soul--a bloody great batch of ingredients
to start with. Lucy Da Silva sings "Ciudad Solitara" (Doc Pomus' "Lonely
Avenue") and "Mala Femina," which reminds me of Esquivel's mid-60s version
of "Malaguena Salerosa." Also features a Shorty Rogers number, "Bossa a
Go-Go," which doesn't quite live up to its name, but has already made a
tape compilation.
Now, go pull your own hair out searching for it.
And last but not least, I want to give a New Years' thanks to Lazlo Nibble
for starting and maintaining this list. I've been lurking here for over
three years and there isn't a day that goes by without finding something
useful and entertaining. Many thanks, Lazlo. And you list members are a
great bunch of folks--give yourselves a hand.

Could someone lay out the record grade for me?
What's the difference between a near mint and a very good plus?
I recently bought a record described as very good plus, that had far more scratches, though mostly surface, than I expected.
Could someone help me out?

Here's hoping that confession is good for the soul and that I can begin the
new year with a slightly cleaner soul.
My name is... let's just stick with Nat.
My name is Nat and I'm an accumulator. But you can call me a collector.
(It's a fine distinction, I admit.)
And I don't have a wife to roll her eyes as I make this confession. But it
gives me hope to find out that you can do this and still have a wife.
(It gives me hope but I think that my accumulating habit is the least of my
problems when it comes to "finding" a wife. My greatest problem? Self pity)
I'm an accumulator and I virtually only buy records in order to have them,
rather than to play them.
In fact, I practically never play any of them - especially the stuff we
talk about here - unless I'm using them to make a tape.
I like looking through piles of crap, rescuing a few, putting the best cuts
on tape, throwing them up on a shelf and going out to find more.
The shelves are pretty full but luckily I'm not married and you can fit a
lot of records on half a queen-sized bed. Now I just have to find a place
to put the books I used to keep there.
I feel clean. Thank you.
Nat

No, that's not about me...
I found something last night at Newbury Comics here in Boston that I
thought would be of interest to both lists...It's a Sequel "Loungecore" CD
comp called HIGHLY STRUNG, which I think was rereleased in 96 or 97. It's
a collection of 1960s rock instrumentals, by Brits, including the Dave
Clark 5...Highly recommended! Some of the production is sort of like those
on Joe Meek rekkids...and to top it off, it was a mere $2.99! A lot of
this stuff is comin' down...just wait for the fads to die, kids, and be
there with your coins!
OK, that's my last post today, I promise!
