dear people
having been online with the ever-expanding motion for almost a year now,
we've put the site through quite an upgrade. please check out the site, and
let us know what you think - feedback is much appreciated. thanks to all
current users and contributors ...
- ---+ what's new:
just about everything! look out for:
motion reviews are now completely searchable,
by artist, release, genre, label, key-word, whatever ...
you can add your comments to reviews, and each review
makes 'intelligent' suggestions about further reading/listening
you can sign-up to new music news services, including
a worldwide musical events diary, mailing list filter,
and reviews updates
you can now find us at:
http://motion.state51.co.uk/
(if you've bookmarked the old motion url, don't worry,
you'll be re-directed)
- ---+ new reviews:
Martin T=E9treault - La Nuit o=F9 J'ai dit Non (Audioview/Lowland)
Sam & Valley - Unsuitable Japanese (Angelika Koehlermann)
Ramuntcho Matta & Samon Takahashi - Soundcards From Chile (AnAnAnA)

don't forget, we update our reviews at least daily, so check us out as
regularly as you can.
- ---+ new shops:
the motion specialist record shop finder now has details of 443 shops!
not bad for less than a year's work. but then it's been compiled
online by record buyers around the world ... like you! anyone can
enter shop details, search for shops, or make comments about
shops. hopefully, it's become a useful resource for specialist
music fans.
http://motion.state51.co.uk/shopfinder/
- ---+ new features:
an interview with diamanda galas
a rastermusic profile
http://motion.state51.co.uk/features/
again, please let us know how we're doing ... mailto:motion@state51.co.uk.
also, we're always on the lookout for intelligent, informed, inspiring
writing about new music, so mail us with ideas for reviews or features or

These software gizmos might work, but don't neglect ye olde analog approach.
A lot of that great "sound" of the old recordings comes from the classic
tube ("valve" in the UK) equipment used to record it. Of course you can't
do anything about how things are recorded these days, but try assembling a
rig of old tube hi-fi gear -- it'll get you closer on your end at least.
And consider single-driver speakers (meaning: just one speaker in the box
- -- no separate woofer & tweeter). Nice presence without crossovers or phase
problems to muddle things up. And the highs and lows will be a bit
compromised, which would eliminate some of that modern harshness.
Of course to have things even out, you'd have to play your modern
recordings through this system and your old records through a separate
*modern* system.

Respectfully submitted:
Not with the artists' "commisions" tacked onto them. that is why the cdr's
for computer use are only a dollar now while the ones with the special code to
work in sound system CD recorders cost the same $ 4 or $ 5 that they do in
Belgium (and elsewhere).
I thought we went over this already.

She has a new cd out of soft easy pop with a touch of angst. A

Bob was also of course a regular member of Enoch Light's
Command All-Stars and played on many Command and Project 3
titles.
I nearly had the chance to meet Bob earlier this year: he was due
to come to Edinburgh with Dick Hyman to play at the Jazz Festival.
Sadly, however, he wasn't well enough to travel.
It's a shame to hear about his passing.

Historic American Sheet Music
http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/sheetmusic/
Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music Project (HASM) presents
digital images of 3,042 pieces of sheet music from Duke's collections,
published between 1850 and 1920. Highlights of the collection include
"antebellum Southern music, Confederate imprints, and Civil war songs." The
search capabilities at the site are sophisticated, allowing users to look
for music by publisher name, composer, title, performer, and many other
terms. There is online help for searching and a glossary of subject
headings. Much of the sheet music is illustrated, and it is possible to
search for pictures by "illustration type" (theme), allowing access to the
subjects of the illustrations as well as the music itself. It is also
possible to browse all the cover illustrations. HASM was originally funded
by Ameritech as part of the ongoing Library of Congress/Ameritech Digital
Library Competition; it will soon be part of the American Memory
Collections at the Library of Congress.

The obit didn't mention it, but I seem to recall his name from a number of
Command or Project 3 albums, albeit many might have been post-Enoch.
Nonetheless, finally an obit to bring a tear even to Robbie's eyes! :)

And in some cases, you've already missed the boat. For example, I've
discovered those cool RCA History of Space Age Pop compilations have been
out of print for perhaps a year now, and the Right Stuff Yma Sumac
reissues have begun to drop out of print ("Legend of the Jivaro" was the
first to go several months back).
After procrastinating its purchase for years, when I found a copy of
Jivaro still in the bins at that hell hole of overpricing, Border's, I
figured I'd better grab it.
Copies of this stuff MAY still be sitting on store shelves or turning up
used, but grab 'em while you can if you want 'em. Some of this stuff is
inevitably rarer on CD than vinyl. (Also, FYI, BMG's mail order music
club still has several key lounge comps/reissues done by major labels
available *including* the History of Space Age Pop series.)

Yeah, I'm still convinced the swing movement is what the masses wanted
the lounge scene to be and commercial viability reigned. (I *still* don't
think "lounge" effectively describes the music) Proof is in that
ludicrous 9/97 "Lounge LA" ComEd review recently found and discussed here:
>And on the other hand, how much do stereo test records and their sterile
>anonymity really have to do with Frank Sinatra or Louis Prima and Keely
>Smith (supposedly all chief deities in the Cocktail Nation's pantheon of
>musical gods), and their crucially in-person lounge performance, anyway?
Boy, *I'm* dealing with a totally different pantheon -- until I found
that mint Sinatra/Jobim record for 50 cents, I owned *nothing* by the
aforementioned gods, or even Billy Holliday, mentioned at the review's
end as the perfect antidote to that awful Combustible Edison. Louis Prima
sounds more like the swing demographic to me...
That review breaks what I deem one of the worst offenses of media review
and criticism: panning something because, while it may succeed at what it
intended to do, it doesn't align with the reviewer's own agenda.
In a post-Marilyn Manson music world, it's kind of funny that "lounge"
was the genre to confound/shock/rile the music press the way it did.

Subject: (exotica) "Einzelgaenger" by Moroder
Found another extremely interesting LP by Giorgio Moroder yesterday.
(Bei Ludwig Beck am Rathauseck, die gerade Vinyls verramschen, dies nur
f=FCr die M=FCnchner)
I'm really surprised about the man. It looks like there was another
"Kraftwerk" at the same time as Kraftwerk and that "Kraftwerk" was
Giorgio Moroder. The album is called "Einzelgaenger", means "lone wolf",
is from 1975 and pretty experimental, german lyrics, yet Pop and nice to
listen to. Has elements that Kraftwerk used much later, such as a
counting robot-voices, sequential patterns and layers, and and and. It's
phenomenal!
Recorded in the legendary Musicland Studios of course... all
compositions by himself and "all instruments played by Giorgio Moroder",
which is kind of unbelievable, since a friend of mine has talked to the
studio technician that Giorgio has worked with, who claimed that Moroder
couldn't read notes and had to paint colored dots on the piano keys to
be able to play a melody. But who cares! The results speak for
themselves. Another goodie to be reissued!

Is there any truth to this rumor?: Kentucky Fried Chicken is called KFC not
for image reasons but because they have altered the genetics of their
product so much they can't call it chicken. Someone I met swears it's true!

It's released by the Fantomas Label (Fantomas 002) and is available through
Dustygrooves. If you liked the Mood Mosaic or Easy Tempo releases, you
would probably get a kick out of the funky pop grooves.

I will refrain from commenting on the quality of the "meat" used at KFC,
but I believe it was to keep the word "fried" out of the public's mind,
once the health trend started. Although they can no longer claim to
use "13 secret herbs and spices", as it was determined that all that was
used to flavour the chicken was salt, pepper and msg!

It's a single, a "green" anti-militaristic song. At that time ('82)
Beuys was a candidate for the Green Party, who now at last have made it
into the new government coalition. The joke of the title is based on the
fact that Reagan sounds exactely like the german word Regen, which means
rain. So it's "Sun instead of Reagan/rain". Why is it a weird record?
Hard to tell... Joseph Beuys isn't a musician, he sings kind of false,
the lyrics are VERY political, but a bit naive at the same time. Beuys
is dead and he was a sort of mysterious person. All of this in
combination makes a pretty weird impression on the contemporary
listener.

Subject: (exotica) Line Renaud
I found the Line Renaud album " at the Casino De Paris - Plaisirs" today
at my local flea market.
Many of you may be familiar with the Line Renaud tune "Sexe" which
appears on the UltraLounge CD, Batchelor Pad Royale. This song of course
is phenomenal, unfortunately it is a complete anomaly as compared to the
rest of the album. Renaud is your basic French cabaret style singer and
while I could see some of the songs growing in their appeal, it is still
a disappiontment, having the expectations of more "Sexe".
On the back cover the picture of Renaud in a gravity defying meter tall
wig is truely awe inspiring.
