not that that's news to anyone...
i heard him (not that i listen to his show) playing a Burt Bachrach live
recording of him singing (i can't remember the tune) and basically Stern and
that sidekick of his were totally destroying it, making fun of his singing
(which isn't that hard i admit).>
Kevin, I couldn't agree with your subject line more. Unlike Linda McCartney,
who recorded "vocals" on several albums with her husband Paul and his group
Wings, and then unplugged her vocal mic in performance, Burt Bacharach was
never aiming for a career as a vocalist. It's well known how poor his
singing is; why does Stern think he's uncovering one of life's greater
secrets? Bacharach is and has been a worthy resource for excellent vocalists
like Dionne, Dusty, and Barbra, who have limitless vocal ability but are
clearly not interested in writing songs. Why "out" Burt? At least he can
play the piano well, and that's more than can be said for Linda McCartney...

I don't think I've seen mention of it here so I have to recommend the film,
"Clockwatchers", just out on video, to everyone on this list.
It's not just the actual music - the soundtrack - but especially how the
music is used in the film.
Most, if not all of the music is of the "easy listening" or "exotica" type.
It's credited to "Mader" with additional music credit going to Joey Altruda.
The main location for the film is the insurance office where the temp
workers - the protagonists of the film - work. One of the protagonists
points out the music which is being piped into the office, saying that
"they did a study" and found that the music increases productivity.
The music you hear at that moment is a lot more "zippy" and energetic than
any Muzak you're ever likely to hear. After that, you become aware that
there's a semi-cool mix of lounge music constantly playing at a very low
level in the film.
And it's not just eerie, it's actually disturbing.
"They took our music and turned it against us, man!"

Well, I just got my copy, listened through it once and couldn't hear *any*
samples of Fanny Brice (or Betty Boop) performing Whoops, I'm An Indian, one
of my favorite songs of all time. But then again, the disc is so dense with
samples, etc. that it may be in there somewhere. Anybody who has been
tempted to take their odd-ball record collection, toss it in a blender, and
see what came out should hear Willner's experiment. And you can dance to it.
sorta.
But I still wanna hear W,IAI.

I saw that Linda McCartney has a solo cd that just came out. I recognized
one of the song titles from a mid-70's Wings album. Yes, not exotica, but
weird nonetheless. Linda solo? Wow.

This sounds kind of lame, but I get to say it so rarely...
I've got that!
Slightly unusual (maybe?), this copy says "Sample Album for Radio-TV
Program Use" on the label. This is not stamped on after the fact, but is an
integral part of the label design (which is yellow with black print).
Changing subjects...
Tonight I watched "Point Blank" (1967) and discovered that a "Sandra
Warner" has a small role as a waitress in a nightclub who gives Lee Marvin
some information. Might this be exotica cover queen Sandy Warner, or just a
name-a-like? I really have no idea if it was her based solely on looks.
Partly because Ms. Warner was a woman of many faces. But also, the woman in
the film is mainly in profile, and the album covers are (almost?) all face
front. So, I'm no help here. Anyone have the word? Thanks.

Maybe this is inappropriate but all I can say is "finally an obit that I
care about".
It's funny. I always thought I loved his films but when I read his
filmography here, it turned out that I only really liked three of them.
Klute, The Parallax View and See You in the Morning, which may be more of a
guilty pleasure.

You should hear what he does with a Moog!! There are 3 or 4 albums from
the early/mid '70's on which he uses the Moog-synthesizer (in
combination with the Hammond). The first and best (and hardest to find?)
is 'Sound 2000 - moog, organ, rhythm'. It has a great picture of Klaus
on the cover. He has HUGE sideburns (is that the correct word for these
stripes of hair growing into your face?) and he sits next to this
impressive looking "thing" with hundreds of knobs on it.
The music is great too. Tracks like 'Cherokee' and 'Raindrops keep
falling on my hand' are 'Moog-ified' with all kinds of weird bleeps and
funny sounds. It also features 'Corn-flakes', a great rip-off of
'Popcorn'. Other highlights are two of Wunderlich's own compositions:
'Lotto-Zahlen' and the suprisingly heavy 'Krimoogulus'.
Volume 3 of 'Sound 2000' is a little less impressive. Most tracks sound
more like a 'normal' organ, but it still has it's moments.
The fourth part of this trilogy (erm...) is called
'Uralterschnulzensynthesizergags'. I've never seen or heard it, but
judgung from the title it should be even better than 'Sound 2000'!

Its true that Sound 2000 by Klaus is a good (ish) Moog LP and I seem to
remember that somebody on this list was raving about
Uralterschnulzensynthesizergags as another quality LP but I would have to
disagree. Uralterschnulzensynthesizergags is a comedy Moog LP with Klaus
dressed as a clown on the cover. It falls way short of proper Moog records
- - its not inventive, fascinating or wierd. Its just stupid in a boring way.
Compared to Perry/Kingsley/Whats New Pussycat (big comparisons, I know) it
doesn't even measure up. I'd like to find the LP with his version of Baby
Elephant Walk on it though.

on an obscure never heard of label named Sonocord, Germany 1980. Mostly
Hawaiian but some misplaced Carribean numbers recorded in the sound
standard of the 80s, which at first hearing sounds too clean and
lifeless in a way, but after you got used to it, it's OK, like a
different flavor. Now, one of these bands like "The Daikikis" or "The
Fifty Guitars" is slightly better than the others: "Wout Steenhuis and
the Kontikis" and contribute a groovy version of "Bali Ha'i" and a
rfeshing piece called "Tuki-Tuki". They not only sound like the 80s but
have developed the "Hawaiian Style" to a more modern level. Anybody ever
heard of them? The question obviously rather goes to the Dutch members
of this list. But who knows? Maybe they are emigrated Hollanders living
in ... Indonesia?

I've seen the contents of volume 1 but volume 2 seems to be more
interesting and after listening to it, I wasn't disappointed. It has 2
tracks from the German Motor Get Easy compilations, one by Brigit

save for the CDN$46.95 (+15.5% tax) price tag it carried! Thats what
happens when a CD doesn't have a domestic distributor and comes from
the UK! I lobbied the store I saw it in to speak to their main distibutor to
PLEASE pick up this label along wih the fine Motor label which is near
impossible to find here. The irony on Motor is that Polygram, the
company behind the label, is based in Canada, Montreal to be specific, but
somehow the internal policies of this multinational corporation seem to
have excluded its own products from proper distribution. It's completely
beyond my comprehension. Maybe if they had Celine Dion on Motor it
would have had made things move a bit faster...

Boring...mostly repetitive, orchestral kinda stuff, as I can recall, done
for a television special. I only heard it once, and was underwhelmed. As

There was a bootleg cassette of Linda singing by herself in concert
with Wings. Her mike was center loud and everything else was mixed
down low. In concert you supposably couldn't hear her sing, but with
her mike mixed high, it is a thrilling ride. You should hear her
sing :
"Baaa Daaa Daaa Daaa Daaaa Daaaa, Daaa Daaa Daa Daa Daa Heyyy JUde!"

Subject: (exotica) Rhino's "Music Futurists" CD
Press release from Rhino. Sounds like a cool project...
- --Rod
- --------------------------
Wired Magazine and Rhino Set February 16 for Release of
WIRED MAGAZINE PRESENTS: MUSIC FUTURISTS
Los Angeles -Rhino Records goes back to the future with WIRED MAGAZINE
PRESENTS: MUSIC FUTURISTS, a comprehensive music collection chronicling the
beginnings of the electronic music scene. This first-ever audio release
from Wired hits stores on February 16.
MUSIC FUTURISTS traces the music of those who have, since the beginning of
the recording era, pushed the envelope of musical technology. The
compilation will be released in CD exclusively for a suggested retail list
price of $16.98 and will also be available through RhinoDirect at
1-800-432-0020 and via the Rhino website <www.rhino.com>.
Two years in the making, MUSIC FUTURISTS represents Wired's commitment to
the forward-thinking composers of the first generation of electronica.
Roughly chronological, the 15 track collection begins with early rebels,
misfits, and trend-setters (Esquivel, Todd Rundgren), through musicians who
heralded the arrival of the digital age (Brian Eno, Devo), and ends with
artists steering the course of today's music (Beck, DJ Spooky).
As this century comes to an end, MUSIC FUTURISTS demonstrates the path
music has traveled in the last four decades - and where it might be headed
during the next four. This collection features such sonic explorations as
"Plutonian Nights" by Sun Ra, "Beautiful World" by Devo, "Total Soul Future
(Eat It)" by Beck, "O Superman (For Massenet)" by Laurie Anderson, "2/1" by
Brian Eno, and "Schizophrenia" by Sonic Youth. Other artists featured
include Bill Laswell, Ben Neill, Steve Reich, Can, Godley & Creme, and
Thomas Dolby.
Wired is the premier publication for smart consumers who want, and demand,
a jump on the future. It focuses on our relationship with technology and
how our lives are being redefined by the digital age. The monthly magazine
is innovative in both content and design, and speaks to those who see the
future as a welcome opportunity.

I'll second the thumbs down on Eleven Against the Ice, unless you're
into '50s documentary music. The Strange One (Coral CRL-57132),
however, is vintage Kenyon Hopkins to my ears. Great edgy, moody
crime jazz for a terrific, if seldom seen film (Ben Gazzara's film
debut, if I remember right, playing a creepy no-good at a Southern
military academy). Here's a track listing:
Main Title
Ace of Spades
Georgie Runs for Major Avery
Military Band
The Fight
Jocko's Theme
The Book
Country Juke
I Call You Nightboy
Jockie's Theme 2
You're Under Arrest
Boogie On the Strange One
Roger Knocks
Strange One
End Title

Subject: (exotica) Popp!
Ever listen to Presenting Popp! by Andre Popp (Columbia WL 130)?
I just did. It doesn't SOUND like the kind of music I get into normally for
my radio program, however it is definitely a keeper.
First of all, it is definitely French...with elements of all of the music
you would expect from Paris: the street musicians, the cafe ensembles, the
saxophone quartet, the military bands, the jazz. You hear a lot of George
Gershwin type things. This is all packaged together with the 1950's era pop
mentality (strings, liberal use of other instruments such as the ondioline).
Les Lavandieres due Portugal is in there...known in the States as The
Portugese Washerwoman. La Bardinette sounds like the ideal 1950's
"shopping" music. "French Dondon" could have easily been a Carl Stalling
composition for a Warner Brothers cartoon.
This is refreshing, entertaining, energetic music...and is the perfect
companion while looking outdoors to a rainy, windy day.

I once had the pleasure of hearing the Linda McCartney miked up vocal track at
one of my favorite used record strores in Boston (of which there are several
many). I can't recall the wordless vocal part refereed to in the previous
post, but I do remember her being way out of tune and everyone in the store
laughing at it......Jimmy/"Jimmy's Easy" airs on WMBR-FM, Cambridge on
Tuesdays from 6-8am
