Okay, we've established that the guy is The Continental.
Does anyone have a track listing?
Also, there are other bonus tracks, like on the Christmas one, the Toys for
Tots PSA. Does anyone know if there's a listing of all the bonus tracks
and what they are?
I hate that.
Thanks,

I just got this, but I don't get it.
It certainly doesn't rock my world like a lot of other new stuff I've

What should I listen for?
What are everyone's high points on the album?
Also, what would you label this as? Psychsploitation?

Where can one find them?
I really dig the Sound Galleries and TV Dinners '60s. Is this along the

Someone please let me know.

From sonya@rykodisc.com:
I know that whenever people like us put out soundtracks we always
look for extra material to put on them, otherwise people will just buy
whatever is cheapest - legal rights and sometimes composer and archival
issue are what prevents extra material from being added. In some cases even
- - the original masters are lost! We don't have the rights to Casino Royale.

Here's my two cents.......
I've heard a lot of James Last, but never heard one that I liked.
Besides that, he wrote two of the most awful songs of all-time: Happy
Heart, and Games That Lovers Play.
As for the Voodoo LP, it's good only in comparison to the other James
Last records...by itself it's pretty crappy. And there's 10 copies of
it at the store down the street.
Closing thought: James Last was the very first person I heard who made
records that sounded like they came from a factory.

if you're looking for cartoons,
try the Whole Toon Catalog. i'm pretty sure they're on the WWW.
not too long ago they got bought by Facets video in chicago. so try looking
for Facets, too.
but email me if you run into dead ends. i have the physical catalog at
home. i highly recommend it by the way.
they have maybe not everything but pretty close to it as anyone (legally).

not that that's news to anyone...
i heard him (not that i listen to his show) playing a Burt Bachrach live
recording of him singing (i can't remember the tune) and basically Stern and
that sidekick of his were totally destroying it, making fun of his singing
(which isn't that hard i admit).
i'm not gonna get in a big huff considering this is howard stern of
course... but the fact that he took the time to sit down and play the cd and
just totally rail on Bachrach... i felt like saying, look man, why pick on a
guy like him? why not someone who is more widely accepted like Sinatra or
Bennet or Tom Jones for chrissake? Bachrach isn't exactly a huge megastar
idol that needs to be lampooned.
ok, i'm done. if anyone here lives in NY and feels like it they should call
his show and bug him endlessly about ripping on Bachrach.

Just picked up an overpriced disc that I simply couldn't pass up,
and not just for the name and cover art "Electronic Music to Blow
Your Mind By !!!- A Pot Full of Psychedelic Pop by The Love Machine.
On "Design Records" which looks to a Canadian no-name label. This
thing keeps good company with the likes of Gert Wilden, Piero
Piccione & Peter Thomas but I can't place it. There was another one
on the same label also with psychedelic cover but Star - using a
sitar in place of where you would a guitar. Not so convincing and I
passed it up. Anyone know more about either or about this label?
BTW, any news on the release of Jungle Exotica Volume 3? Sure there's
been Beat at Cinecitta and Mo'plen since to fill the void, but this
stuff is in a league of its own for sheer rawness!

Well, each to his own, but if you'd like to pick me up one of the 10
copies of Voodoo Party, I'd appreciate it, and I'm sure there are 9
others on the list who would like a copy as well!
I think every true exotica collection needs at least one James Last
record. While he may not rank up there with Esquivel and Denny, his
Hammond-A-Gogo recordings can be fun!

A Trip to Brazil - 40 years of Bossa Nova
Got this sent yesterday...
For anybody who wants to get into the music of Brazil this is the perfect=
compilation.
Great tracklist and phantastic information source. But also for the more
advanced listeners of the Bossa it is still amazing. Not only do you find=

"...in all reissues, Tommie Williams (who used to play with Getz but didn=

I prefer Klaus Wunderlich who turned the hammond into an experience of it's
own. But even he is not top. My favorite hammond record is by this obscure
American Bill Kehr who called himself "the Candyman". (1977 Sunnyvale Records)

I said pretty well the same thing about that record but if there really are
10 copies and they're cheap, depending on where you are, go buy them and
drive them up to Toronto. You might just pay for your trip.
But it might take you a couple of weeks to find the people who have been
looking for that record ever since some DJ showed it to them and said "Yeah
it's James Last. Really!"
By the way, are there also a few copies of the soundtrack to "The Party" up
the street where you are?
It's funny how certain records become "identified" and then suddenly become
scarce and expensive. And I always hate it when I find myself wanting a
record that is, unbenownst to me, one of those identified. In the case of
Voodoo Party however, I acquired it "accidentally". I found it at the
Goodwill and thought the characters on the cover of the record were a bit
unusual and had to buy it for that reason alone.
I guess the list of "identified" records would be too long to compile
I've never even seen a Kenyon Hopkins record but I found "The Corporation"
record at a Goodwill too.
Oh by the way, there's probably almost no one on the list who will
appreciate this but today I found a copy of the soundtrack for "Face Off",
the only movie I know which featured the captain of theToronto Maple Leafs,
George "The Chief" Armstrong, in a speaking role.
It was about a hockey player who falls in love with a hippy.

That's so weird. Or maybe it isn't... if indeed it's Canadian. I just
found that record myself a couple of weeks ago; except mine was at a
Goodwill. It's not in the greatest of shape so don't feel too bad.
It's also weird because I thought of Brian here as soon as I got it home
and played it. I thought "If you ever make those guys ANOTHER tape..."
I love records like this simply for the fact that it exists. It's so cheap
and generic and yet there is something quite unique about it. I'm not sure
I'd put it in the same Gert Wilden and Peter Thomas category that Brian
does - then again that's his territory more than mine - but for something
so "throwaway", it's not far I guess.
It suddenly occurs to me "Why would anyone here want to hear about a record
that they'll probably never hear?" I probably should have just sent this
to Brian but what the hell...

I couldnt possibly invite James Last to my apartment. The LPs are plain
ugly, and so is he. And its not funny ugly, but ugly ugly. The
recordbins in Stockholm fleas are overfilled with his CRAP! Urrk!
For hammond LPs I recommend Sunnyvale Records. My fave is Bob Kames'
- -"Loves greatest songs" (1977) where he not only plays but also sings on
50% of the tracks, One of which is "Help me make it trough the night".
He is also responsible for the Happy Organ series.
Now I will search for the Candyman.

I think the event would be very unlikely, as I read in

Alright...let's not be dissin' the sistahs, ok? And I'm not gonna get in a
Beatle-battle-royale, but it's not like Paul is an angel...at least Yoko
did a lot of interesting visual art, and, um, *unusual* records.
But let's not do this. I'm more curious as to whether anyone ever filmed

Strangely enough, I've had that happen quite a few times. Certainly more
often than for any other record. Which has at any rate convinced me that
I am prejudiced by his overall poor output, awful image and general
abundance, and only dare to play James Last tracks that really are more
outstanding than I'd like to admit.

At least hereabouts, Voodoo Party hardly qualifies as identified - it is
so abundant, and JL has so poor credibility that I doubt that it will
ever become seriously collectible.

He put on a great show! I stayed for all three sets in the lounge.
It was fantastic and free, but next time will try to get a better seat so

Wow. That is the greatest testament to individual taste I think I've yet
seen on this list. Someone's favorite cheesy organist is Bob Kames!.
That's not a flame honestly. When it comes to cheesy organ, it's kind of
hard to stand on your high horse of good taste. But still... Bob Kames!
I have a friend who now owns at least fifty Ken Griffin records and it was
because one day he told me he liked Ken Griffin and I thought it would be
fun to see just how many I could find him at the Goodwill store.
Forget about the fifty plus Ken albums. I think I've found him at least
ten Ken Griffin TRIBUTE records, including one by the aforementioned
Mr.Kames. I guess I figured anyone who would stoop to paying tribute to
Ken Griffin couldn't be anyone's favourite organist. But how wrong I was.
I guess there are probably more generic and/or obscure organ records in the
dusty bins I search through than any other "category" of records. And it's
pretty well impossible to judge them by their cover... as anyone who owns
"The Groovy Organ Goes Romantic" can probably attest.
I won't try to start another obscure organist thread but one of my most
pleasant surprises recently has been "Hammond Goes Tijuana" by Wim Moens.
But if Bob Kames is really The Happy Organ then he's one of my favorites
too. His version of "Snowbird" is definitely the one to beat.

Hey, I just wanted to endorse these obits and pieces of news, Lou! And as
a person of the now-generation with a swingin' space/tiki pad, I just
wanted to say the Slinky is indeed in the casa de Jane Fondle, and is
considered a valuable space-aged toy. Heck, think how much fun it is to
play with the Slinky as you listen to those stereo-action rekkids!

Subject: (exotica) hal willner (long-ish)
with recent talk of "exotica" being sampled, can't believe no-one's
mentioned the new hal willner album (unless i've missed it - soz if so) ...
lots of incredible samples (perhaps the widest-ranging i've ever heard),
including a perceptible raymond scott and carl stalling influence (hardly
surprising given willner's CV) ... definitely of interest to many on the
list i suspect (also, on the quirky (occasionally exotic, occasionally
prosaic) samples front, watch out for the black helicopters! and i think
the new lamb album samples 'quiet village' - not sure - we've heard a promo
here at motion, and m'colleague hopkins spotted it ...)
here's my recent review of hal willner ... for motion - sound samples + art
online:
Hal Willner
Whoops, I'm An Indian
Pussyfoot
A truly inspired record. Hal Willner, as many readers will be aware, is
something of a legend in production circles, working with luminaries such
as Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Sun Ra, Henry Rollins, Gil Evans, Sonic Youth,
William Burroughs, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, etc., and overseeing a
stunning series of tribute albums. This however is his debut release. Howie
B is an extraordinarily lucky chap to have this gem on his Pussyfoot label,
after he encouraged Willner to lay down a couple of tracks a chance
meeting. Willner, plus cohorts (Martin Brumbach and Adam Dorn on studio and
beats/loops respectively, with Ralph Carney on occasional sax) returned
with a whole album of the finest quality sampladelia you'll ever hear.
Willner's record collection, from which this music emerges, must be truly
extraordinary, the breadth of sound sources running from the earliest
available popular recordings to all manner of found sounds, spoken word and
nature recordings, through to contemporary classical, via American folk
music of all flavours and the finest jazz, rock and funk references. Just
about every other sample-based record pales into insignificance compared to
this. The only things that might come close are Timet Lorenzo Brusci for
the range of source material, and John Wall or DJ Shadow for the
construction skills. A forerunner of this release would seem to be
Willner's earlier work producing tributes to classic cartoon composers Carl
Stalling and Raymond Scott. The maniacal humour, fast cuts, unpredictable
pacing, riotous dance and brooding drama, the ability to veer from darkness
to light swiftly and subtly. It's all here in a tour-de-force of
arrangement. Willner's musical sensibilities are such that the mix is often
impossibly dense yet never seems muddled or clumsy, despite incorporating
what sounds like the outtakes of psychiatric hospital tests, beautifully
haunting klezmer music, groovy Quincy Jones samples, religious speeches,
drum 'n' bass, Jacques Arel, drill instructors, Rimsky Korsakov, free jazz,
'Home On The Range', big bands, avant-garde electronics, barber shop trios,
tawny owls, and numerous isolated instrumental and vocal fragments used
intelligently, funkily, dryly. A particularly smart aspect of this record
is that Willner's constructed an essentially instrumental record, but using
lashings of vocals. Often the world of sample-based music can be an arid,
soulless place, and one is left yearning for the touchstone of the human
voice. This music is built around voices - lovely looped samples of voices
old and new, warm, funny, unsettling, dramatic, used as texture, melody,
rhythm, harmony. I can't recommend this enough really, as you've probably
guessed.

I think every true exotica collection needs at least one James Last
record. While he may not rank up there with Esquivel and Denny, his
Hammond-A-Gogo recordings can be fun!
Sounds like great stuff to me, too. Pick me up a copy, there will be 8
left! How much,anyway?

She is still alive but her retirement is complete. I don't think she will ever
peform again. Her very last recording was in 1981 for the Sharky's Machine
soundtrack. Her last studio album was in 1969 and it was filled with late 60s
contemporary songs. It was Julie's attempt at trying to "get with it". She is
curently living in Encino, CA. which is a half hour from my house. Last I
heard she was happy just sitting around the house smoking cigarettes and doing
crossword puzzles. I'll bet that voice of her's is pretty husky these days.
Some of her recorded work can be found on two for one CDs or "twofers" from
EMI. That is they take two of her old albums and put them on one CD. They are
imported from England and can only be found at stores that deal with imports
such as Tower Records or Borders. That is how I have some of her recordings,
the rest I have found on LP.

Man, I DOUBT it... I can't even find the CD3 adapters anywhere.
I would hve to say that at a buck-a-throw, go ahead and waste the
extra space on the standard disk since CD3's are not universally
playable anyway.
