*Jovelina Faria Belfort
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Jovelina Faria Belfort, a Brazilian samba
singer and composer, died Monday of a heart attack. She was 54.
Known as Black Pearl, Belfort did not make her first record until the age
of 40, but quickly produced seven more.
The most successful were ``Jovelina'' in 1985, and ``Sorriso Aberto,'' or
``Big Smile,'' recorded in 1987.
*Bob Trow
NEW ALEXANDRIA, Pa. (AP) -- Bob Trow, who portrayed Robert Troll, Bob Dog
and himself for some 30 years on ``Mister Rogers' Neighborhood,'' died
Monday of a heart attack. He was 72.
Trow taped appearances for ``Mister Rogers' Neighborhood'' just last week
that are to air in February as part of a lesson on noisy and quiet.
Before joining the PBS show, he contributed countless sketches before that
for morning radio in Pittsburgh.
Rege Cordic gave Trow his start in broadcasting after hearing his musical
group, which combined song and humor. Cordic brought Trow into Cordic and
Company, first on WWSW and then on KDKA, using invented characters to harass
the host to the great amusement of morning commuters.
Popular characters included Carmen Monoxide, an incorrigible punster;
Omicron, a bureaucrat from Venus; and Louie Adamchevitz, a Slav garbageman.
Cordic's team even began a Monoxide for president campaign.
Trow also wrote and produced television and radio commercials, and painted
oil portraits of visitors to his home.
Trow is survived by his wife, Lois; son Eric, who is creative director for
the Brabender Cox advertising firm; son Rob, who also works in broadcasting
as a studio vocalist and voice-over talent in Chicago; and two grandchildren.

Subject: (exotica) bad news for Southern Culture on the Skids
SCOTS has come up on the list recently.
Here's some news that just came out of their camp today.
- -Lou
========================================================
Southern Culture has had some bad luck on this tour. Mary hurt her foot and
now a thief has made off with their guitars. If you know anything about
their instruments, please let their manager, Dave Viecelli, know. He just
sent out this bulletin today. We've also got it posted on the website.
There's a few new tour dates at the bottom of this message for your perusal
as well.

GUITARS STOLEN IN SAN FRANCISCO, REWARD OFFERED!!!
Southern Culture on the Skids played two shows at Slim's in San Francisco
on October 20 and 21. Sometime between the end of the first night's show
and the beginning of the second night's show, two of the band's guitars
were stolen from the stage.
A reward of $1,000.00 is being offered for the return of the stolen 1956
Gretsch Country Club hollow-body electric guitar. The instrument is
cadillac green, features a Bigsby tailpiece and a Bigsby bridge on a
leather base, and was in a grey Gretsch case. While the serial number is
not yet available, the guitar is very distinctive in that the model number
inside the guitar originally mistakenly had a "0" as its second digit.
That "0" was corrected to a "1" by hand at the factory, making this a
one-of-a-kind, readily identifiable guitar.
Also stolen was a Jerry Jones four-string electric bass guitar. It is a
copper-burst longhorn model in a black plastic case. An additional reward
of $500.00 is offered for the return of this bass.
Both rewards are offered on a "no questions asked" basis and are available
to anyone that either returns the guitars safely or provides information
leading to their safe recovery. Anyone with information of any kind is
asked to contact Dave Viecelli at:
THE BILLIONS CORPORATION
833 West Chicago Avenue, suite 101
Chicago, IL 60622-5497
tel: 312-997-9999
fax: 312-997-2287
email: boche@billions.com
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated as these guitars are of
tremendous sentimental value to Rick and Mary and cannot be replaced.

Subject: (exotica) Stan Getz: Giving Life To A Melody
by UPI/Ken Franckling
A most unusual thing happened in pop music during the winter of 1965.
Saxophonist Stan Getz won four Grammy awards, including Record of the Year,
for ``The Girl from Ipanema'' with guitarist Joao Gilberto and singer Astrud
Gilberto.
He had some stiff competition. The other nominations that year were Barbra
Streisand for ``People,'' the Beatles for ``A Hard Day's Night,'' Henry
Mancini for ``The Pink Panther'' and Louis Armstrong for ``Hello Dolly.''
It was one of those rare instances since the 1940s Swing Era heyday in
which a jazz project had enough crossover appeal to dominate the popular
radio airwaves for a season.
Getz had become fascinated a few years earlier with the bossa nova wave
coming out of Brazil. His 1963 recording ``Jazz Samba'' with guitarist
Charlie Byrd produced the hit ``Desafinado.''
Then he collaborated with pianist/composer Antonio Carlos-Jobim and the
Gilbertos on ``Getz/Gilberto,'' a stunning album which further melded his
beautiful and romantic instrumental tone with exotic samba rhythms and
included ``The Girl from Ipanema'' crossover hit.
The U.S. soon was awash with bossa nova fever -- and introduced to a stream
of talented Brazilian composers and performers whose impact continues today.
Ironically, Getz's label, Verve, resisted releasing ``Getz/Gilberto'' --
apparently taking the paternalist view that the bossa nova movement was a
momentary aberration and that nobody in the U.S. could care about
performances by foreign musicians they didn't know.
That tidbit emerged last week in Boston when Getz's widow, Monica Getz,
spoke at a dedication of the Stan Getz Media Center and Library at the
Berklee College of Music.
``Verve didn't want to release 'Getz/Gilberto' at all,'' she said.
Getz proved them wrong, but not until after some guerilla tactics to get
the music to the public. Monica Getz said she got a demo tape of the
recording, researched how to place songs with program directors, and
delivered a copy to a top radio station in San Francisco.
As the song got airplay and became very popular, ``we embarrassed the
record company into releasing it,'' she said. ``They were surprised by the
success, and Stan was absolutely flabbergasted.''
Getz, who died of cancer in 1991, had one of the most beautiful and
instantly identifiable tones ever heard on the tenor sax. He fell in love
with jazz at age 14 and left school a year later to go on the road with
trombonist Jack Teagarden's big band.
By the time he was 21, Getz had worked with Stan Kenton, Benny Goodman and
Woody Herman. His improvised solo on the Herman band's hit version of
``Early Autumn'' established him as one of the great interpreters of
ballads. He sustained and even strengthened that role throughout his career.
``His sound was his gift. He was a true prodigy,'' said vibraphonist Gary
Burton, a longtime Berklee faculty member who was a journeyman member of
Getz's band from 1964 to 1966.
``To Stan, success was like a great new suit that never fit quite right,''
Burton said. ``He was a natural player with a great sense of melody and
interpretation.''
Burton said Getz always sought out the best new players for his band,
including Chick Corea, Mose Allison, Steve Swallow and Jim McNeely. ``He
felt he was the student and drawn to players who would introduce him to new
music,'' Burton said.
In spite of his own lack of schooling in jazz or on his horn, Getz's sound
and tenacity helped countless players find their own voices. ``He showed us
all how to give life to a melody,'' Burton said.
The library dedication in Getz's honor was funded by a grant from the Herb
Alpert Foundation. The trumpeter became a close friend of Getz in the late
1980s and produced one of his final recordings, ``Apasionado,'' on his A&M
label.
``Stan once told me he never played a note that he didn't mean,'' Alpert
said. ``That deserves something. It deserves a building -- or a library.''
The Stan Getz Media Center and Library houses the academic world's largest
collection of printed popular and jazz music, solo transcriptions and
technical materials. Nearly 100,000 separate song titles exist in various
editions for full band scores, keyboard, guitar and other specific instruments.
The complete works of the standard classical music repertoire is available,
along with hundreds of modern composers, and a growing collection of popular
and folk music from around the world.
``Stan didn't like ceremony, but this is something he would have liked,''
Monica Getz told the small crowd of musicians and academics gathered at the
Berklee dedication. ``He would have been very proud of the purpose of this
- -- to give young musicians a chance he never had.''

Esquivel, Stereolab and Aphex Twin all rolled into one." "It seems like Sir

Donna Summer, her 'first ever recorded vocal', pretty amazing) to

I hate to be the one to say it but "that wasn't jazz" though I guess you
could call it a "jazz project", given that Stan Getz was a jazz musician.
I don't know why I bother making this distinction or piping up here. I
guess my button will always get pushed by stuff like this though.
Yes "jazz" is this huge, deep, wide term which is used to describe some
rather distinct genres of music. I say I love jazz but there's a lot of
music called "jazz" which I actually kind of hate. So the word "jazz" has
pretty well lost its meaning.
But it still has some meaning. And the Getz/Gilberto records were not jazz.
Someone says "Oh isn't that cool? A jazz project crossed over". And you
think "Oh yeah that is cool. Whoever thought that people would make a jazz
record into a hit record?" And then you hear the record and realize that
in fact, it's not a jazz record they're talking about.
At most it's a "jazz flavoured" record.
At most it has some chords on it that are associated with jazz.
At most it has a solo or two that remind you of jazz.
I think some people call a record "jazz" if the solo is taken by the
saxophone player instead of the guitar player. I'm sure that you could
find some record stores where Clarence Clemons records were in the jazz
section.
I have records by Stan Getz that I would "legitimately" call jazz and I
like them. And I have a few of his Brazilian records. And I think my
favorite "jazz flavored" Getz record is the one where he does all Bacharach
tunes.
That record is almost jazz.
Why this rant today? I don't know. I guess I have unresolved issues.
Everytime I say "fake jazz" on this list, someone says "hey why do you have
to call it fake?" Maybe I should point out that once upon a time the word
"fake" when associated with musical genres was a putdown to me but now it's
just a descriptive term I use. A lot of the music we discuss here is fake
something or other. In fact, isn't exotica, "fake exotic" music?
Or I say "fake jazz" and someone says "Hey man why do you have to label the
music?" I don't know. I like labelling music.
Or someone says "there's two labels only, good and bad." And that's fine
except that a lot of "bad" music is among my favorite music.
These days anyway. God help me.
Nat

I agree with Nat: labels are useful gifts, not false pigeonholes.
When I first heard the term "fake jazz", in the early 1980s (and
probably in a Lounge Lizards review), it sparked a lot of useful thinking.
I think most of us like jazz when, with the passage of time, it can
start to sound like mood music. That's a scandal for true jazzbos,
but even the most avowedly serious 1970s fusion starts to
evoke period and lifestyle (rather than virtuosity and ambition)
after 25 years. If you told me 20 years ago that I'd be buying
the early-to-mid 1970s stuff that's on the Easy Tempo or some of the
French jazzadelic compilations, I'd have doubted this stuff could
ever be rehabilitated. But now it sounds like the soundtrack to its
time.

Subject: (exotica) Peggy Lee recovering
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Singer Peggy Lee has been taken out of
intensive care a week after suffering a stroke at her Los Angeles home.
Lee's personal secretary, Jane David, says the 78-year-old singer took a
turn for the better today.
David tells UPI Lee was able to wiggle her toes and arms, which she says is
an indication that Lee might regain movement throughout her body.
David says Lee smiled and ``was a little feisty.''
Lee, who has led a relatively private personal life in recent years, is
being treated at an undisclosed Los Angeles area hospital with a security
guard posted outside her room.
David says she has received calls ``from around the world'' inquiring about
Lee's condition and wishing her well.
She says Lee -- who suffers from diabetes and has been using a wheelchair
off and on for the past ``four or five years'' -- has been living quietly at
her home, entertaining friends occasionally.
David says Lee has recently been hosting private screenings of the recently
re-released videocasette of ``Lady and the Tramp,'' for which she wrote and
sang several songs and voiced four characters.

Hi! Anyone on the list going to Combustible in Philadelphia Thanksgiving
eve? I *think* I am. And, not to cause confusion, but Friday means one of
two things:
1. I will be losing my e-mail, and therefore off the list.
2. That won't happen, but I might get a new address.
I'll let y'all know.

Subject: (exotica) Zeus! What Revieus!
When I came back from California, I had mentioned that I had scored a
couple of choice platters. I had heard parts of some of these, but had not
had time to digest them.
Here are my thoughts on some of what I have found:
(Groovy) Living in Space - Ed Gates. This is one GREAT title! Could be
the list motto, no? It's a single that I bought for the title, I didn't
care how it sounded. It turns out that it is an organ instrumental with
vocal interjections. It is actually, um, well, groovy!
My Quiet Village - Darla Hood - Anyone expecting a voice reminiscent of her
long past "Our Gang" days, will be surprised by the full-throated
vocalizing on this version of the Baxter classic. Baxter is still tops,
but this has the same Mr. Spock-style eyebrow raise factor that Johnny
Mathis' version of "Caravan" does as in, "I didn't know there were lyrics"!
Hi Fireworks - Ferrante and Teicher. Finally, finally! I have an all-out
string attack F&T LP (at least their third for Columbia) which cost me a
whopping 2.50. The highlight is the first track, "Oye Negra", which is
played with an unbelievable dexterity. If you see it, buy it. It's that
good.
Zounds! What Sounds! - Dean Elliott and his Big Band. After hearing so
much about this record (next hope to find: Moon Gas by Dick Hyman) I found
a mono copy for 13.99. This is one unbelievable outing. There are no bad
tracks and the promise those of us having heard "Lonesome Road" will not be
let down. This is one amazing, witty and ingenious record. The sounds are
used and used well throughout the record (tuned raindrops!). It takes the
innovations of Spike Jones and/or John Cage, if you will and you end up
with a document that for the time (the year is not on the record. 1960?)
is a pop masterpiece. I will join the ranks of the many that say that this
album demands reissuing with liners that explain how they coordinated the
sounds.
Don't go around humming it. Your co-workers will look at you funny.

St. Martin's URL is (not surprisingly):
Take a look at their FAQ page:
The Griffin page is at:

Today I received this new Peter Thomas collection in the mail, and so far
so good. But where are the recording dates? I can figure out the dates for
tracks 3, 4, 9, 12, 16, and 19 because these songs come from films or
mini-series that are discussed in the liner notes - but what about tracks
1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 18? For date junkies like
myself, compilations without dates frustrate the hell out of me. Can anyone
help out there?

Subject: (exotica) Bennett Comes Clean About Drugs
NEW YORK (AP) -- Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco and became
the darling of the MTV generation in his 60s. And he picked up a drug
problem along the way.
``At every big party I'd go to, people were high on something,'' the
72-year-old crooner wrote in ``The Good Life,'' about the heady Hollywood
days of the 1970s.
``Cocaine flowed as freely as champagne, and soon I began joining in the
festivities. ... Compounded with my pot smoking, the whole thing started
sneaking up on me.''
By the late 1970s, he spiraled into a dangerous drug-filled low as his
personal life unraveled -- his mother died, his marriage was faltering and
the government was after him for back taxes.
``I found I was using drugs to ease my pain,'' Bennett said.
In 1979, when the IRS threatened to seize his home, he went on a binge that
nearly killed him. In the two decades since then, the eight-time Grammy
winner has risen to new career and personal highs, without drugs. His latest
album, ``The Playground,'' is being released this week.

Funny you should mention this...
Those of you who know me - even a little - have realized that I am a DEADLY
combination of Scatterbrained AND way too busy. To hide this fact as best I
can, I
recently employed the use of a PalmPilot to help me keep track of the things
normal people can do in their own heads or on a small scrap of paper....
Anyway,
Just as I get into the PalmPilot lifestyle, I crash the little gizmo
irretrievably. For
DAYS I am utterly lost without my companion.
Minutes ago, I managed to breathe partial life back into my Pilot, and to
test to see if
my calender worked, I searched for my ComEd entry. Now I will have to make
a note
to look for a guy with a fez.
. You'll find me doing it with the "Al Malaikah" fez on. Hope to
see you there!
Doing WHAT?
