Subject: Re: (exotica) Questions
Thanks El Maestro Con Queso for the questions. You're the best.
Okay here we go.
1. Are you a musician? Explain
I'm an actor. (comedian not a comic) Grew up watching mostly comedies,
spy, sci-fi and mysteries on TV and guess I like songs that remind me of
old TV and movie background music. I play piano, sing and used to play sax
in high school.
2. Space-age/exotic LP/CD that turned you on to this?
My brother gave me Esquivel's Space Age Pop cd, and I found the RCA
Space Age Pop compilations and thought, "Oh my God, I didn't know this stuff
existed" ! I've been searching for stuff like it ever since.
3. This list could help you more by...
Keep on listing your favorite finds, and telling me where to buy LP's in
my new home area of New Jersey.
4. Other exotica/things you collect
Comedian biographies and TV books. Used to collect comedy posters,
stills and wacky packages.
5. Unrelated music genres/acts you like
Spy, Crime, Space, Percussion, Wacky Stereo..wait, that's related
musical genres...um...The Flying Karamotzov Brother's juggling act.
6. What are you just dying to tell us?
Frank Zappa and Leon Redbone are the same person. Redbone, just got
sick of being Zappa and killed off the character.
7. Initials you prefer, CD or LP? And why do you? Is it a sound quality
consideration? The aesthetics of LP art? The supposed clarity of CDs?
Tell us more!
LP. Can't find the good stuff on CD as much. Also like to hear the
crackles and pops. Reminds me of my youth. Ah, life.
8. Own a fez? If so, what color, texture and tassel color? Describe it or
other lounge-wear of which you are proud?
Yes, own a fez. Was once a member of the L.A. tent "Way Out West" of
"The Sons Of The Desert" Laurel and Hardy group.
9. Shaken or stirred?
Had my first martini last December at a "TV Funhouse" closing night
party. I had stirred. Gave me a headache the next day. Guess I should
have had shaken.
10. I clean my LPs with ...
Alcohol and paper towels. A record store employee in LA told me to use
lighter fluid though.
11. My home page URL is:
Don't have one. Give me a break. I just figured how to post on this
list. Have had a cd-copying drive for over a year and haven't even been
able to figure out how to copy LPs yet. I download into a wave file and the
darn software can't find it. I'm pissed! Sorry. Is "pissed" a swear word?
12. I have a Licence To ...
Drive. Pretty boring, but wierd question. Hate to leave on that note
so I'll leave on G Sharp. Laaaaaaaa!!!!!!!
Your Pal,
Doug

Do we have such a survey here? I've never seen it. Sounds like something
you'd be more likely to find on Yahoo's Tiki Central or Luxuria Music's old
site. My general experience on the list is that folks here are much more
interested in the tunes that they are in the trappings, although we've had
some...[ahem]..."spirited" discussions about various exotic drinks from time
to time as well as strange movies.
One of my greatest disappointments in living in the Upper Midwest is that
I've never been able to find a fez. A few years back, I had tried to put
together a public-access tv show called "Mr. Ghost Goes To the Movies". It
would've starred Yours Truly as the semitransparent host, Mr. Ghost who
would MC for films like "Superargo Vs. The Faceless Giants" and "Secret
Agent Super Dragon". I envisoned the character as a more diminuitive version
of Brother Cleve and looked everywhere for a fez and a velvet smoking jacket
to no avail.
The local Shriners seem to hold onto their fezzes tenaciously and pass them
down from generation to generation instead of donating them to Goodwill.
I've had to content myself with wearing my Mexican wrestling mask instead.

Subject: (exotica) Brain In A Box
I was most pleased to be gifted with Rhino's "Brain In A Box" CD set a
couple of weeks ago. I was wondering what others on the list thought of it.
Here are my impressions:
The packaging is phenomenal. Those holograms on the sides are simply the
coolest and cheesiest thing I've ever seen in CD packaging.
The little Brain In A Book that comes with the set is chockablock with great
pictures, interesting comments/essays, and a wealth of URLs to check out.
Overall, I was pretty happy with the music contained on the 5 CDs, but there
were several clinkers on each CD...can't please everyone, I guess. The movie
CD contains cool theremin-driven scores like the opening theme from
Forbidden Planet, but it veers off course later by covering mass-market
movie fodder like Terminator 2, Aliens, and E.T. I couldn't see any need to
include this kind of stuff.
The TV CD covered pretty much everything I wanted to hear from One Step
Beyond to Land of the Giants and Astro Boy. However, once again the
collection is derailed by the inclusion of very recent stuff such as the
X-Files theme and Babylon 5.
I have to say that my biggest disappointment was the Lounge CD. Much of the
music therein seemed bland and unadventurous compared to the other discs.
However, there were a handful of standout tracks like Moon Gas and Jean
Jacques Perrey's Cosmic Ballad.
The Pop and Novelty CDs seemed to be by far the best part of the collection,
but I am probably prejudiced having grown up on a steady musical diet of Dr.
Demento.
My favorite tracks? A hard call, but I find myself irresistibly being drawn
back to these two:
The religious hillbilly weirdness of "(When You See) Those Flying Saucers"
by the Buchanan Brothers & The Georgia Catamounts and "The Blob" by The Five
Blobs (featuring lyrics by Burt Bacarach!). My 7-year old daughter likes to
frug wildly to the latter.

I spotted one (a fez) at a car show flea market a few months ago, but I
don't think ANY of you would want to place that moldy, greasy old thing on
your cabeza. Scary condition (which is a notch or three below poor
condition, technically speaking).

I've never been a hat-man myself. (I didn't even like wearing my helmet in

I will be an outlaw.)
So anyway, if you had a fez, when would you wear it?

Sadly, no. Doug, he make the leetle joke. But Leon and Frank did have similar
sensibilities in many regards. For example, I saw Redbone last year and before
the show began, a weird atonal accordian riff kept playing from the PA system.
It repeated over and over again for 20 minutes. After a while, you could see
folks squirming in their seats because it was getting so damned annoying.
Finally, it broke into this incredibly weird eastern european polka/yodeling
thing and everyone in the audience breathed a huge collective sigh of relief. I
just hope that he doesn't discover subsonics on his next tour! He also does a
terrific shadow-puppet performance along with an old opera recording.
I've got tix to see Redbone again along with Leo Kottke next month, always a
great show.

I've been a PJ guy since 1969...His poor man's Tom Jones approach is
irresistible. His emoting is often superceded by his stylings, but in a most
charming and well-meaning way. His minor hit "Hold Me" was the theme song
Summer '69 at a summer rental I and a few of my palz had on ol' Cape Cod. Of
course we would sing it as "Blow Me" but that's only because we were teens,
not the responsible adults we've since becum...I would say that to score an
LP by him would be the way to go...Like Tom Jones, the one I have "Somewhere
There's a Place for Us", is a veritable cavalcade of pop stylings circa 6T's
America...JB

My late-70s Leon Redbone story.
Actually the story came from a girl whose boyfriend was a car mechanic. He
did some work on Leon's car, noticed a batch of cassettes and thought,
"Hmmm, I wonder what music Leon listens to." He took a peek at the tapes
and found that Leon liked to listen to... Leon.

Bombay Jazz Palace v/a outcast (2001)
This is a fantastic Raga/Sitar comp! My highest rating even though
I have some cuts on it. The 14 songs on it raga out with nice
sitar drenched vibes. Most are uptemmpo grooves that would sound
hot on the dance floors around the globe. Artists include Paul
Horn & Nexus, Volker Kriegel, Georges Cavarenez,Dave Mackay, Dave
Pike Set, Between, Lalo Schifrin, Groupo Batuque, Yves Hyat,
Shocking Blue, Shandar Family, Shankar-Jaikishan, Anada Shankar &
Muhavisha Ravie Hatchud & the Indo Hazz Following. Get this and
you won't be disappointed.
Got mine from http:www.othermusic.com
Dave Pike Set "Masterpieces" Motor Music 1996
I have been rocked out by the raga jazz fusion of the Dave Pike Set
"Masterpieces" This is a great comp! Fusion with the great Volker
Kreigel doing wa wa & fuzzed out guitar solos and Dave Pike's
wonderful stylings on vibes. It covers Dave Pikes years in Germany
on the MPS label, 1969-72. I'm assuming these are Dave Pike's best
years.
Does anyone have any Dave Pike recommendations. Is his new album
any good? I have "Times Out of Mind".
Thanks for any help.
Chuck

Subject: (exotica) Custom Hand Carved Tikis can be made for you today in Florida
While driving near Pensacola Florida I saw all these hand carved
Tikis on the road side. I thought it was a hallucination but we
turned around the car and went to meet the owner. It turns out
that Carlos Noche has been carving custom TIKIS for fourteen years
or so! I spoke with him for a while and he is a real nice guy.
He knows only a little about the modern Tiki culture. On his desk
was the Don Tiki cd and a great book called Hawaiiana, a Schiffer
Book for Collectors which is available at Amazon.com. He is a real
artist and his Tikis are first class! He had a whole bunch in a
truck to be delivered and said they sold very well. I took some
great pictures of the place.

Also while driving to Quebec from Montreal on the north side of the
St Lawrence, about 2 3rds of the way to Quebec, my friend noticed
a wonderful Tiki Bar. We turned around went in and it was all
decked out straight from 1958, unchanged. Tiki mugs of all kinds
to to drink out of and some looked old. I don't have the pictures
with me and forgot the name but again I have some great pictures.
The place had imitation 1950's velvet Hawaiin girl paintings on the
wall. Fantastic Tikis inside and out.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

No but it seems you're the only one who actually entertains the idea of

Apparently Mr.Redbone denies having any identity other than the present
one. And any past. But once upon a time he was a "folkie" in Toronto.
Like Raffi.
Maybe he's actually Raffi.

I wish. At least then I'd feel better about having been forced to listen to
"Baby Beluga" 300 or 400 times while my son was a toddler.
Of course that pales in comparison to having to listen to that kiddy album that
Cheech Marin put out a while back...

I've gone through a number of Dave Pike records, including some very
cool-looking ones, looking for even one cut as cool as the sitar-laden
thing I once heard by him. But none of them came anywhere close. I think
this is it for him. One great anomaly. But then many of our faves here
are one-off anomalies.
Most of the time Dave Pike was a so-so easy listening jazz vibes player.
In fact I'd go so far as to say that if you get a record home and find out
that you bought Dave Pell instead of Dave Pike, you probably didn't do any
worse.
And there are better so-so easy listening vibes artists.
Like Johnny Lyttle.

This is sad to hear. The two tracks by the Dave Pike Set on the
"Talkin' Jazz 2" compilation, sitar driven "Mathar" and distorted organ
fusion "Big Schlepp", are very fine. These are my only encounters with
Dave Pike, but they impressed me enough to keep his name in memory.
