I just ran across the official site for the new live-action TV version
of the Tick comic book this morning. I was pretty happy with what I saw
and heard. The theme song in particular seems to have drunk deeply from
the musical cocktail shaker of Neil Hefti. Check it out (requires

VA, Input 64: A Collection of Commodore 64 Game Music 1984-1989 (Enduro)

 With the resurgence of lo-fi emulations of early 1980s techno all over the
electronic sphere (the Suction label, parts of Boards of Canada and ISAN,
and so on), not to mention releases of such early electronic pioneers as
Raymond Scott, it shouldn't be surprising that someone would have the
brillant idea to resurrect all those theme songs to the early computer
games, most notably those found on the Commodore 64. For those of you not
alive in 1983, the Commodore 64 was the Titanium Powerbook of its time: the
sleekest, fastest, and coolest computer money could buy. In fact, the great
selling point of the Commodore models was their absolute bottom-basement
prices. Now, my parents were cheap and wouldn't buy me a computer of my own
(though they did, um, feed me and stuff), so I never acquired the magic C64;
instead, I pulled weeds one summer to earn enough for the C64's older and
less cool cousin, the Vic-20; to top it off, I couldn't even afford the tape
recorder that served as a floppy disk drive, so all I was able to do was
type programs I found in the various magazines into the V20, play whatever
the game was that emerged, and then, when I was done, turn the computer off
and lose whatever I'd created. Pretty pathetic, huh? But why am I bringing
all of this up now? Because it's so easy for us today, in 2001, to recognize
how quickly computers have advanced in speed, storage, affordability, and
availability. Just think: the C64 was a great computer for gamers and
noodlers alike, and yet, not 20 years later, the computer looks so
fundamentally primitive by today's standards that when I tell stories about
it people just laugh, like we laugh about people 100 years ago using leeches
for medicine. Desipte the great leaps forward in computing technology, when
I listen to the music on this wonderful collection, I am struck by only one
thought: things haven't changed nearly as much as we'd like to think. The
music on this collection was, in fact, made on a Commodore 64, using an
8-bit stereo system that was impressive for its time (heck, we still use
16-bit today, not a huge improvement), and using proto MIDI and software
synth programs that are certainly not that different from the Reaktors and
Retro AS-1s and Cubases of today. And, you know what? This music is in every
way as good as the most current releases by Solvent, ISAN, the Warp guys,
and just about every electronic music released in the last few years. What
makes this music good? Simple: it's damn fine work, both aesthetically and
technically. They are good songs, and they are a lot of fun. In fact, I
would say that this release does Lucky Kitchen's 1998 release Blip, Bleep:
Soundtracks to Imaginary Video Games one better by actually being songs from
real video games (and weird video games at that, as the titles "Insects in
Space," "One Man and His Droid," and "Monty on the Run" attest). Of course,
in both releases, the secret is a simple one: the songs are far more
interesting than the games themselves. But that's why music lasts, and video
games die quick deaths.

Hola mi exoticamigos y exoticamigas,

I am leaving for two weeks of vacation in Spain next Tuesday. I will be
travelling through Madrid, Barcelona, and the Costa Brava. So far, I've
managed to identify and locate three polynesian-themed bars in the areas
that I'll be visiting:

Mauna Loa Bar Hawaiiano, Madrid
Hawaiiano Bar Kahala, Barcelona
Hula-Hula, Costa Brava

I plan on stopping at all three. However, I have not been able to find
any info on a place that's listed on the Tiki Bar Review Pages as the
Moai Cafe. There are some pics on the site of the cafe's owners putting
up giant concrete moai statues, but there's no location given.

So my question to the list is: does anyone know where this is located or
know of any other polynesian bars in Spain? I realize that this is a
long shot, but I was hoping that some of the Europeans on the list
might've recently spent some time down south jumping around naked on the
beach in Almeira and drinking Sangria out of buckets...[grin]

one of my fondest memories of visiting europe after university is of a
polynesian (?) restaurant i visited in barcelona (my favorite european city).
i'd been in spain for about a month & hadn't had sangria yet, so i asked if
they could make me some even though it wasn't on the menu. they made me up a
huge pitcher and it was delicious -- i drank it like soda pop. during the meal
the lights suddenly went down, loud drum music started playing & a dancer in a
grass skirt appeared in a spotlight. she danced over to every table & "leied"
all the guests before disappearing again. the sangria went straight to my head
& i became very drunk. the restaurant was near barcelona's amusement park
(parque de atracciones montjuich), and after staggering out of the place i
went on the ferris wheel for a superb view of barcelona harbour. superb but
terrifying -- my head was spinning one way while the ferris wheel was spinning
another way & i was hanging on for dear life (it's a good job i didn't lose my
meal). i can't tell you any details, like what the place was called, and this
was more than 20 years ago, so it might not exist anymore, but i'd definitely
recomment the ferris wheel for a spectacular view of barcelona.

Lessee--Johny Perl asked what Jose Feliciano album "Go On Your Way" is =
on--I think it's "The One and Only Jose Feliciano," an early RCA LP, but =
can't confirm as my records are on their way to Belgium right now.  In =
any case, it's his second or third RCA LP, just a year or so before he =
hit with his cover of "Light My Fire."

And though I've mentioned it before, I'll remind list members that the =
original of "Bossa Per Due" is a 1961 track from Bert Kaempfert titled =
"Bert's Bossa."  Way to go, Bert!

Wonderful story! Yes, Sangria is far too drinkable and therefore very dangerous
stuff. I hope you knew how to say, "Lave por favor este asiento.  He vomitado."

I've been to Spain twice, but this will be the first time I've visited Barcelona.
I'm a huge fan of Moderniste art, so going there will definitely be the highlight
of the trip for me. I'll definitely have a look around to see if your restaurant
is still there. I'm also planning a day trip up to CadaquΘs and Cap Creus as a
sort of Dalφ pilgrimage.

....coupled with Schiffrin's "The Man From Thrush" intro and percussion
loop, and then formant shifted up around 15 bpm. (Nicola told me he coudn't
believe how perfectly the 2 samples worked when coupled). Then he wrote the
new melody over the groove, and added appropriate horn samples and synth
twidlings, as well as editing and placing the organ and vocal improvs.

Talking of video game music and particularly Commodore 64 music, Zombie
Nation's 'Kernkraft 400' recent huge European hit that got to number one in
a number of countries including Italy, Germany and almost the UK turned out
to be ripped off from the Commodore 64 game Lazy Jones. Apparently a LOT of
money was paid to the owners of the game when the theft was discovered.

Can anyone post the tracklisting of this?

I have a french LP which uses the same cover photo (you can even see
where 'The Surfmen' writing has been coloured in badly). It's entitled
'Surprise-partie auz Iles Paradis avec L'ensemble Instrumental des
Iles', and wanted to know if it was the same LP.

The 'Surpise-partie ...' thing seems to have been a series, judging by
the other lps advertised on the inner sleeve.

Heh. That's an excellent way to put it.

That really tickles me, considering the budget-label-style total anonymity
of the original release.

Does it mention the Blues Project guys that also played on it (Al Kooper,
Danny Kalb, etc)? I always thought this record should be more of a cult
item for their fans than Sun Ra fans, being a lot closer to their sound,
with the extended guitar solos and stuff.

Correct. Really nothing to do with Sun Ra's own music. It was just a quick
gig for bucks. A fun novelty nevertheless.

I would recommend "Space Is The Place" as a Sun Ra introduction (CD reissue
on Impulse a few years ago). It's a fairly extreme and "out" album -- but
if you hate it, at least you've experienced full-strength Sun Ra.

Hello & Help!

I am in major need of your assistance in identifying some tunes. In
1982, The Residents released æTunes of 2 CitiesÆ, an album of music
representing two different (fictional) cultures, the Chubs and the
Moles. The ChubsÆ music is bright and brassy, that of the Moles is more
dark and dour. It transpires that the actual music played is based on
two genres which might just about fit under the Exotica umbrella û Swing
and Sci-Fi movie soundtracks. IÆm using the term Swing rather loosely
here û two of the ChubsÆ tracks have been identified as Stan Kenton
tunes and although Kenton may not be Swing, IÆm stuck for a more
apposite term.
Anyway, the two Kenton tunes (Eager Beaver & Machito) are the only ones
IÆve been able to identify. If anyone here thinks they might be able to
name a Swing/Big Band tune or music from an old Science Fiction movie
soundtrack, please check out the mp3Æs here:

As a dedicated Residents fan, IÆm very keen to identify any artists or

You might want to check out Ted Gioia's book West Coast Jazz.  Not just for=20
the general history on Stan Kenton, but because of the chapter on Bob=20
Graettinger - an avante garde composer that Kenton nurtured.  There's also a=
=20
piece on Graettinger in the Songs in the Key of Z book, I think.  Anyway, I'=
d=20
bet the Residents were hip to Graettinger's atonal City of Glass jazz=20
symphony.

Here's a great libation for a sunny summer Sunday; goes well with
Jamaican pork ribs done in the smoker and Jacques Dutronc on the stereo.

Head Wound

This is a visual concoction that works best in a clear, head-shaped mug
(I use that Disney World Polynesian Village mug with the smiley face on
one side and a frowny face on the other). Put 1 cup of crushed ice in a
shaker and another 1/2 cup in the mug. Add the following ingredients and
mix until the outside of the shaker frosts over:

4oz. unsweetened pineapple juice
4oz. orange juice
2oz. Lemon Hart Demerara Rum (80 proof)
1oz. Creme de Banana
1oz. Triple Sec

Pour the contents into the mug, then take 1 oz. of grenadine and drizzle
it over the top to form lovely streamers of bright red grue. Garnish
with a lime slice.

Don't know about Tunes Of Two Cities, but on "Six Things To A Circle" on Fingerprince I hear an obvious influence by the "Voodoo Suite" of Perez Prado.

Harold DeVance Land, born Houston, TX Dec.18, 1928. Raised in San Diego.

Played and recorded with Max Roach-Clifford Brown Qnt't 1954-5; with Curtis
Counce '57-8; co-led qnt't with Red Mitchell '61-2. Played many clubs in LA
and SF with Philly Joe, and played withh Gerald Wilson in '50s and '60s, and
intermittently into the '90s. From '68-71 co-led qnt't with Bobby
Hutcherson, and also co-led qnt't with Blue Mitchell '75-8. In '80s Land was
part of the
Timeless All Stars European trip , and also traveled and played as a single.
In '92 he toured Europe with Steve Grossman group. Played with Billy
Higginsin in Italy at Umbria Festival '98. First taken with Coleman Hawkins,
Land was then influenced by Lucky Thompson and Charlie Parker. The result
wasa mellow, swinging bop attack that sometimes sounded like Wardell Gray.
Aftera period in which he was strongly influenced by John Coltrane, he went
back
toward his former style with a Tranish residue. He played on the soundtracks
of the films: The Young Savages '61; Seven Days in May '64;They Shoot
Horses,Don't They?; Recorded with  Elmo Hope, Curtis Counce, Bill Evans,
John
Faddis, Red Garland, Freddie Hubbard, Frank Rosolino, Dinah Washington, King
Pleasure, Monk, Timeless All Stars, Bobby Hutcherson. Died of a massive
stroke or heart attack at age 73 on unconfirmed date July 27, 2001. (source

wide-screen production ``Windjammer,'' has died of diabetes at his home outside
Oslo, his wife said Saturday. He was 70.

"Rochemont was born in New York in 1930 and died July 11. He was educated at
Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and during the 1960's and 70's taught film
at the University of Toronto.

"'`Windjammer' was about a six-month Atlantic Ocean expedition with the
Norwegian fullrigged training ship Christian Radich, crewed by teen-age
Norwegian sailor students.

In it, Rochemont pioneered the use of three cameras, producing a dramatic
wide-screen effect. The film was a sensation when it was first shown.

His father, Louis de Rochemont II, won two Academy Awards in his filmmaking
career.

In 1979, Rochement moved to Norway, where he remarried and worked making
information films about Norwegian maritime activities, such as oil rigs and
salmon production, and electronic information systems for cruise ships.

For those of you who are in the NYC area, you probably know about
Marion's Kahntiki month. Well, I went to it this weekend and it was
fantastic. The decor wasn't as retro as it could have been but the music
was great and the drinks were even better. I even shared the big bowl of
"Hawaiin Punch" with my wife --- you know the bowl, the one with the
flaming volcano in the middle!

Highly recommended for those who love to drink -- and I know there are a
few of you out there!
