Jerry Goldsmith has written some really superb music over
the years, and appears in threads here regularly. During the
1950's prior to him breaking into the big time with themes
such as "Dr Kildare", his mentor was the late Miklos Rozsa,
whose sound track successes include Ben Hur, Quo Vadis,
El Cid, and of course Spellbound, replete with Theremin....
There's a good CD of Rozsa's greatest film score music,
conducted by him, on Angel Records.
So there are two instant suggestions for the soundtrack
composer hall of fame. I would also consider putting
forward Michel Legrand, for "Thomas Crown Affair"..
Anyone second that?
Hugh.

When Nate asked, "WHAT is "moog" - "electronic organ" or somethin'?", it
inspired me to fill the tape I promised him with nothing but moog titles.
This list has no compact discs on it.
Side A
SATURN SKI JUMP Harry Breuer / Jean Jacques Perrey "The Happy Moog"
Pickwick
- Any of you who have listened to The House Of Games on KFJC will recognize
this as the track Jack Diamond talks over.
COUNTDOWN AT 6 Perrey And Kingsley "The In Sound From Way Out" Vanguard
- One of the top five most influential records for me. In 1967 (I was 11),
my buddie's older brother had this record and we listened to it. It blew us
away. Years went by and I forgot all about it. Then, Swan's Splashdown
appeared on the Incredibly Strange Music CD and it all came back to me.
That's when i knew I had to have this record and at any price. One of the few
moog recordings now on CD. A must have.
ELEANOR RIGBY Marty Gold "Moog Plays The Beatles" Avco Embassy
- [Beatles - 1966] This was a hard one to find and I was pleasantly
surprised to find sitar on many tracks.
WISHIN' AND HOPIN' Christopher Scott "More Switched On Bacharach" Decca
- [Dusty Springfield - 1964] Nice wordless female vocals on this.
SPANISH FLEA Sid Bass "Moog Espana" RCA Victor
- [Herb Alpert And the Tijuana Brass - 1966] Old Spanish favorites played
in an exciting new way.
DANSERO Richard Hayman "Electronic Evolutions" Command
- 2 LP set which highlights 3 previously issued recordings, Cinemagic
Sounds, Genuine Electric Latin Love Machine and The Copper Plated Integrated
Circuit: Plugged In Pop.
BIG YELLOW TAXI Claude Denjean "Open Circuit" London Phase 4
- [Neighborhood - 1970] Boring? Dreck? Geez, I don't think so at all.
Anyone who spent their "wonder years" listening to the originals on a
transistor radio held to their ear is bound to get a kick out of these
versions. This tune features cha-cha-chas and a cartoony horn honk-honking.
PIPELINE Hot Butter "Popcorn" Musicor
- [Chantay's - 1963] A first? Moog surf.
POLK SALAD ANNIE Gil Trythall "Nashville Gold" Athena
- [Tony Joe White - 1969]
FAT CITY! The Zeet Band "Moogie Woogie" Chess
ABSOLUTE SADIST Mistress Kat "Cyborgasm" Passion Press
mixed over
GIRL, YOU'LL BE A WOMAN SOON Hugo Montenegro "Neil's Diamonds" RCA Victor
- [Neil Diamond - 1967] My perverted little mind could not resist this.
Think of it as a personal touch.
Side B
AQUARIUS The Electronic Concept Orchestra "Moog Groove" Limelight
- [5th Dimension - 1969]
GOOD MORNING STARSHINE Mort Garson "Electronic Hair Pieces" A & M
- [Cowsills - 1969] Music from the musical, Hair, of course.
TIME IS TIGHT Dick Hyman "The Age Of Electronicus" Command
- [Booker T And The MG's - 1969] Another Hyman moog recording, The
Electric Eclectics, is on CD.
NOWHERE MAN Gershon Kingsley "Music to Moog By" Audio Fidelity
- [Beatles - 1966] The man behind the 1972 top 40 hit, Popcorn.
MAS QUE NADA Enoch Light "Permissive Polyphonics" Project 3
- Spaced Out has the great cover, but I prefer this record.
SPINNING WHEEL The Moog Machine "Switched-On Rock" Columbia
- [Blood, Sweat And Tears - 1969]
WHAT'S NEW, PUSSYCAT? Walter Carlos "By Request" Columbia
- [Tom Jones - 1965] One of the most wacked-out versions of a pop tune
I've ever heard.
A TASTE OF HONEY Martin Denny "Exotic Moog" Liberty
- [Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass - 1965] There may still be a few of
these bootleg CD's of this backed with Les Baxter's Moog Rock in circulation.
DIZZY Hugo Montenegro "Moog Power" RCA Victor
- [Tommy Roe - 1969] One of the good ones from this LP of really good and
really bad.
PINK SWEATBOXES Bunny And Carrington "Cyborgasm" Passion Press
mixed over
MISTY The Electronic Concept Orchestra "Electric Love" Limelight
- [Johnny Mathis - 1959] More audio erotica mixing fun.

Tuesday morning on TCM:
8:30 am: "Viva Las Vegas" (1964) Supposed to be in widescreen format.
10:00 am: "Once A Thief" (1965) Music from Lalo Schifrin, w/ Ann-Margret, Alain
Delon & Jack Palance.
AMC supplies a couple of films noir on Wednesday:
8:00 am: "Born To Kill" (1947) W/ Lawrence Tierney, Claire Trevor & Walter
Slezak.
2:00 am (technically Thursday morning): "Double Indemnity" (1944) Rogue
insurance salesman Fred MacMurray cooks up trouble with bad girl Barbara
Stanwyck. Definitely an episode he kept secret from "his three sons".
Friday on AMC:
11:30 pm: "Master Of The World" (1961) Vincent Price as a megalomaniac (again).
Music by Les Baxter. It was discussed here a while back, but I forget what was
said.
Also, I sent a post earlier with links for the newbie who asked for exotica

Not when you grow up with it. But I know what you mean... "The List"
(Exotica) is starting another discussion of what exactly is Exotica. My
suggestion "anything faaaar away" was apparantely forgotten and so some
try to find definitions again. To me it sounds a bit like an attempt to
define "foreign" or so. To me "Exotica" originally was only things like
Martin Denny etc and I think I still want it to have it that way. It had
to do with the South sea and not Africa, could trace back roots to Latin
America, but that's it. Practically the list discussed many more
subjects that were far away from that, such as Electronic Music, which
is something completely different, I think. But OK, why not. The list
should really be called "Incredible Strange Music list". Somebody
suggested Van Dyke Parks as a subject to the Exotica list. Van Dyke
Parks? Why not the Beach Boys? They had quite some Hawaiian Songs. I
don't know. I'd rather stay within a more limited definition and include
more aspects aside bare record collecting. Exotica to me is really not
only music. It's very similar in the KLF-list, which is the other list
I'm in. A few people always answer, when I put in some questions on
wider subjects, surrounding phenomena such as conspiracy theories f.e.,
but when you leave it alone it falls back to the record collectors
business as usual within a few days.
I think we don't get to the point of the cultural Exotica feeling, when
we discuss the scratches on our records. Austrian performance artist
Herrmann Nitsch is starting a 6 days happening next month. There will be
bulls slaughtered, Maidens thrown into the blood, people drinking and
taking drugs for 6 days, worshipping the sun, life, extasy, I don't know
what. I probably won't go there, but to me this sounds more like trying
to find out something about our inner capabilities of exotic/ecstatic
living than anything I've read in the list so far. I'm not even saying,
that both exclude each other, but I just never read really personal
statements of experiences somebody has made with his exotic...desires?
lifestyle? determination?

Years ago, I read in an interview with King Sunny Ade that Jim Reeves was
one of the most popular artists in West Africa in the 1960s. Since then,
I've bounced this off several native Africans, including a Ghanaian cab
driver in Chicago and a Kenyan hotel desk clerk in San Francisco. They all
recognized the name and confirmed that he was widely heard on African
radio. In the words of the cabbie: "Oh, man--Jim Reeves, he was the
greatest."
What's weird is that Jim made a brief and unsuccessful attempt to crossover
into films with a western set and shot in South Africa, titled, "Kimberley
Jim." Guess the word didn't get out about that.
I also have to pass on someone else's insight into one of Jim's biggest
hits, "He'll Have to Go" ("Put your sweet lips a little closer to the
phone; We'll pretend that we're together, not alone."): It's about an
obscene phone call.

My memory of Van Dyke Parks was around the time of the "Tokyo Rose" LP.
"Night Music" (did anyone else watch this show?) postponed it's usual
opening to show Parks playing "America, the Beautiful" with a full band of
violins, horns, singers and kotos. I would concur with the previous poster
that he has had his exotic moments.

Subject: (exotica) what is exotica anyway?
If you want to mention Van Dyke Parks here or share your reaction to his
recent appearance on "Politically Incorrect"... go ahead. And I don't
really care if it's not exotica but I don't think it is.
Yes the word "exotic" is contained in "exotica". And in "real life" that's
a relative term I guess. So if something is exotic, is it exotica? I
think exotica is a broad term but not that broad.
I mean, Wonder Bread was exotic to me the first time I tried it.
Having said that, I never thought this list was about the specific group of
Eastern and Latin influenced musicians in the 50's and 60's whose music was
typified by bird calls and bongos. And I never thought it was all that
much about tiki bars, though I've been proven wrong there. And that's okay.
I thought it was about easy listening music, lounge, loungecore, space-age
pop etc and since that music comes from jazz and big band and soundtrack
music and Latin and muzak and early ambient pioneers and just good old
middle-of-the-road American entertainment, it's going to flow in lots of
different musical directions.
So it's hard to bring up something that has NO connection to exotica in
some form. But I don't think Van Dyke Parks is particularly connected,
even though he made an almost-calypso record.
And the reason he's not particularly connected for me is because he's not
"generally associated" with that kind of music. And for me, a lot of what
is and isn't appropriate for this list is about "general associations".
Yeah, that's narrow-minded I know. Free up your associative powers, right?
If instead it's about "how many connections can you find between exotica
and all other forms of music?" then great, let the floodgates open. I'll
probably be at least as interested in your posting about Coltrane or Neil
Young or Captain Beefheart or Tortoise, Slint, Pavement as I am about some
of the other things here. Don't let me stop you. I'd like to draw the
line at Celine Dion but then again, she's pretty exotic to me. What could
be more exotic and otherworldly than a robot who sings?
Oh and by the way, since I assume many people here are record collectors or
accumulators, you can always brighten my day with stories of your
obsession, how you found a record, finding records on the street or about
how your Three Suns records are now numbering in the three figure range. I
also like to hear about records on the floor, in the stove, in the washroom
and on the bed.

Subject: (exotica) Montenegro and moog
While we're still on the subject of moog I'd like to express my severe
disappointment with Montenegro's "Rocket Man" record. I don't know why I
expected that "a tribute to Elton John" with moog would be good but
Montenegro is the guy who breathed new life into "Classical Gas" and "Love
is blue" so why not?
The liner notes make a big deal of the participation of Hugo's son, John
Montenegro.
("John" doesn't quite work with "Montenegro", does it?)
I blame him. This is more a bad fusion record than anything else.
It looks like Hugo thought his son was bringing new life and new influences
to his music but really he should have let John make his own records. Then
again, if I'd seen the name "Montenegro" with any first name, I probably
would have grabbed it. Maybe someone can spin off this posting into a
discussion of the sons and daughters of exotica heroes.
Where are the Dino Martins and the Hunt and Tony Sales of the exotica
world? I guess there must be a Desi Arnaz Jr. mambo record out there
somewhere.

Funny you should mention the father son team of Montenegro. I recently found
an LP by both of them called "Other Brothers' Music" featuring young John on
the Arp synthesizer...The album, while stylistically interesting and filled
with familiar tunes, perfectly captures the ice-cold sound of the future that
the early to mid-7T's sometimes typified when they dipped into too much
synthesizer...Scary, but a real "period" piece...Jimmy

I haven't read it yet, BUT in the June Issue of Record Collector Magazine
there is a really cool article/interview with Jean Jacques
It also lists all of his recordings with the DATE of the recording
and the country of the pressing and some cool different album covers
He just sent it to me with a great tape of his EP: MISTER ONDIOLINE
Considering that it's 1956, it sounds unfreakinbelieveable
It is ab-so-lute-ly astounding that it's 1956
and no,
I can't make you a copy.
Just be thankful with all the new cool info that whomever lays upon thee.

Dear Nat,
I didn't mean to exclude any connections that you can find when you
discuss music. I must say I never read that general proposition by
laszlo that stands on top of the exotica list and says "discussing
musical styles (...) early electronics" etc. I did read this yesterday
evening for the first time and I must admit it fits pretty well what is
actually happening in the list. I like music and all kinds of styles
myself too much to not understand what it means to find a rare record on
the swap meet or tracing back musical influences by the musicians who
are involved in it etc etc. (I love Van Dyke Parks AND the Beach Boys,
by the way) I only think that a deeper understanding of the things that
happened musically always includes an understanding of the whole, the
cultural history. And that includes even more than musical questions.
Things like art, politics, psychology, history...I'm shure you know
that, I just hardly find it in the mails. When I hear Denny I ask
myself: Why did he do it? What did he like about it? Why listened so
many people to this at that time and why did it all dissappear? Etc etc.
And only then I can understand why this man collected music instruments
from all over the world and why the bird calls still ring a bell of a
punk rocker from germany in 1981. My point was to make the discussion
wider instead of more narrow, but I think that's practically only
possible if you concentrate on a smaller field of original material on
the other hand. So why do I not open up a Tiki-mailing list you may ask.
The answer is: I don't know how and I don't think it's worth the effort
for 2 or 3 people. I thought, the Exotica list was what I was looking
for. I think I'm leaving it for a while. I want to visit the Kontiki
museum in Oslo and the newly discovered pyramids on Teneriffa and
hopefully Thor Heyerdahl himself who lives there. Report when I'm back.
Promised.

As long as there isnt an Exoticalist, discussing the phenomenon and
cultural background as you wanted, why dont stay on this one. I
appreciate your postings, and I'm sure a lot of the others do too. The
problem with me is that I really dont know much about the background to
be that good discussionpartner, I'm mostly in it for the music (at least
for now, though I likes Hawaiian vintage shirts) and rather a newbie on
this actually, but there are others with lots of knowledge... Some even
have there own fanzines ;)
I want to read an discuss everything from Jungle movies to visions while
listening to Fantastica to Heyerdahl to Clubs and events...
Playlists and compilationtape descriptions really bores me but I can
live with it. As long as people chat its OK.
Magnus

Subject: (exotica) World's oldest cigar-smokin' schnapps drinkin' man dies in US at 115
PARIS, April 27 (AFP) - Christian Mortensen, a cigar-loving
schapps drinker believed to be the world's oldest male, has died in
the United States aged 115, a doctor revealed.
Danish-born Mortensen's death on Saturday in San Rafael,
California, was confirmed Monday by Michel Allard, a French
specialist on centenarians.
In his final years, despite being blind, nearly deaf, and unable
to walk, he continued to devote himself to his central pleasure of
cigar smoking. A table next to him in his retirement home was laden
with boxes of cigars sent by wellwishers from around the world.
Even on his 115th birthday he entertained fellow residents with
traditional Danish songs, and clearly revelled in the media
attention his longevity attracted.
Born on a dairy farm in Denmark in 1882, he worked on the farm
and as an apprentice tailor before leaving for the United States in
1903.
He retired in 1950 after a number of jobs, including 21 years in
a canning factory.
Mortensen said he had forgotten the name of the woman he was
married to for several years, saying it was long enough for him to
learn not to remarry.
He shunned red meat and only occassionally ate chicken or fish.
He also drank lots of water and rarely took medication.
On his last birthday in August Mortensen was considered by
experts to be the third oldest person alive.

I can't say on the music, but the Maltin Guide describes the movie as:
"Japanese-made cartoon is good children's entertainment; story centers on
magical monkey's ambitious adventures, from bullfight in the pit of a volcano
to an epic battle with Hercules of the Universe. Voices of Jonathan Winters,
Frankie Avalon, Arnold Stang, Sterling Holloway."
I'm *guessing* AIP acquired it and re-dubbed the sound for the US market.
