"Highly Strung" is intrumental collection of twangy guitar pieces a la
early John Barry without the swing of Barry's work. somewhere in the pseudo
Brit surf genre...so perhaps tangentally connected to "Loungecore"...but
the "Girls..." collection is blatantly misleading. simply girl group and
vocal pieces from the Pye label of the mid 60s without the slightest
connection by any stretch. "The Easy Project" and "Sound Spectrum" pieces
still stand as pretty good slices of the time and have the some connection
to the genre, but Sequel needs to be more selective in what they are
bringing out (and how they label it). They have many fine pieces
forthcoming (a Joe Meeks collection is one), but they seem to have jumped
into that "Hey, let's put 'Lounge...' on it and seel more..." mentality.


final analysis...get "The Easy Project" and "Sound Spectrum" (in that
order). if you like light rock surfy guitar...get "Highly Strung". but you
didn't even mention the cheesy muzak (not used here as compliment"
"Orchestral Sounds Meets James Bond"...truly dreadful...

This is on London. It's not bad, but it's sad that they haven't released
the version they do live. When they do it live, they do a wicked ending,
just like the Shirley Bassey version. Good song though.

The Taboo has shrunken heads on the cover.  Is there a story behind this
besides the amusing liner note stating they're authentic?  "This
cover is different."    Which was first, the heads or the volcano ala

Lalo Schifrin's score

Kenyon Hopkins - Mister Buddwing
Great score from start to finish.  Are all of his scores this good?
And has anyone seen the film with James Garner?  Sounds like a very
cool mystery/thriller.

There was an "Ultra-lounge" event held at 9:30 club here in DC this
past Friday.  It was hosted by Fred Schneider (B-52's) and his new
band.  After hearing something from this new band I was not so
excited about attending and ended up skipping it although the line-up
also featured Friends Of Dean Martinez.  Any reports on this show,
assuming it's travelling?

-------It is this particular album that I found in a thrift store during the
summer of '78 or '79 that started my intrest in collecting exotica records, and
still remains till this day one of my favorite evening-time lo-lite platters!

Oh, but there are two different front covers, very different.  Just
yesterday Brad showed me his copy of Taboo 2 which has a picture of a
volcano similar to volume one, same colors, etc.  It was also on the
Hi-Fi label and had the same track listing, with group photo.  I didn't
think at the time to look more closely at the liner notes.  Although
the volcano cover looks like a more logical follow-up to vol.1, I
just wondered if possibly the heads were released first, then
discontinued because of any reaction.  It's a shocking photo.

my enormous ego. i'm not sure that towa tei's record even does use=20
samples so much as reference style (something that has been crucial to=20
the survival of ALL of the arts for all know history...) but really=20
that's all that samples do, so maybe that doesn't matter. as far as=20
"original" (i.e. fresh sounding) recordings go, i know when i first heard=
=20
the disc it was a musical revelation. it doesn't particularly sound like=20
anybody else (least of all dee-lite!) and it really sounds great.=20
claiming that samples (and i'll include lifted melodies in the broad=20
definition of those) can't be used to make anything new or imaginative is=
=20
remarkably similar to the music snobs who attack martin denny, arthur=20
lyman, and les baxter for stealing ideas and sounds for other cultures=20
when they clearly used them in a totally new and musically exciting=20
context. while i am not accusing mr. kery of this, all too often attacks=20
on sampling in the hip hop world, are little more than thinly veiled=20
racism, denying the huge musical contribution that hip hop djs have made=20
to the pop music world and attacking them for not being violin=20
virtuousos. anyone who can't hear how the sample of "nights in white=20
satin" is used on the fugees record in a completely new and different way=
=20
than on the original (that sounds GREAT!) is not really listening. o.k.=20

I say go buy it!

"Heigh-Ho" actually might not be as 'mental' you'd hope (but I will admit,
I just listened to it again and snickered audibly at one point).  There are
definitely some other tracks worth owning, however.  In particular, "You're
Driving Me Crazy!" and "Manhattan" are wonderful!

what are you waiting for?!

This looks like a private discussion, but since it was posted to the
list...
I tend to agree with Ricardo (except for the bit about Towa Tei
sounding nothing like Dee-Lite, if anything Future Listening proves
what a large part he played in that group).  As Ricardo said, there
are undeniably creative ways of using sampling.  There are also lots
of examples of uncreative sampling (remember MC Hammer?)  That
sampling IS static and lifeless.  However it can also be fluid and
an integral part of a piece.  Some sampling intentionally creates a sort of
post-modern  distorted reference to the original, and in doing so alters the
original meaning (Portishead, De La Soul).  The KCRW interview with
Stereolab mentions "live looping" of borrowed jazz riffs.  I could go
on and on, and this thread might : ) , but there are just too many
examples to the contrary (past and present) to maintain a claim that
sampling by definition is uncreative.  And on a list that applauds
the use of unusual instruments and vinyl, how can you discout the
phonograph itself as an instrument?  Anyway, LISTEN to Towa Tei's
record, it's really too likeable to get in such a huff over -
Batacuda IS lovely.

so now that i've attested to the wonderous qualities of jim and his
records, i was wondering if there is anybody out there that has some
info about record stores, flea markets and tiki bars in the denver area.
 am moving to boulder as of the first of july and any insider insights
about anything interesting would be greatly appreciated.  boulder seems
kind of annoying, but one can't necessarily choose where one ends up
sometimes and there are some nice natural amenities that compensate for
it's social make up.

I think Les is an under-rated genious, although I too love JG Esquivel...He's
really flashy, which is great for what he's done...But Les has composed,
arranged, conducted some of the most brillian, beautiful exotica ever!
Good Martin Denny's are of course, EXOTICA, AFRO-DESIA, HYNOTIQUE,
PRIMATIVA(with my fave cover) ...
Les, Martin and Juan are all great, for wonderfully different reasons...Good
