  100. I would like to build a "complete" collection of the enlongated coins
  101. you can make using the elongating machines at Disneyland, CA. (I live
  102. in the area and have an annual passport)

  104. So I was wondering about a few things.

  106. 1) Does any one already have a list of where the machines are located at
  107. DL.
  108.  
  109. 2) How can I best insure quality of the enlongated cents? Should I
  110. polish
  111.    the cents before enlongating them?

  113.    I have already discovered that I should not use cents after 1982
  114.    because of the Zinc.
  115.  
  116.    I was toying with idea of polishing some very worn Idian Head Cents,
  117.    and using those as my "planchets". It might also be interesting to

  164. If you polish them clean, you may not be able to tell that is was an
  165. Indian Cent after you roll it... The dirt on the coin is what enables
  166. one to still see the coin's original image after rolling.

  172. TEC offers 2x2 elongated coin holders for sale.  The more you buy, the
  173. cheaper they become... I think at most they are four cents each.  These
  174. 2x2s fit very nicely in 20-pocket album pages, which fit into standard
  175. 3-ring binders. The elongated 2x2s are available only from TEC (as far
  176. as I know), the 20-pocket pages are available thru TEC or most any coin
  177. shop in the country.

  236.     Indian head cents would make for a very interesting reverse.  
  237. However, don't clean them first, or you'll entirely lose the image.  I 
  238. would recommend you use coins (Indian or otherwise) that are well aged, 
  239. but with the image still visible, and no serious variations in coloring.  
  240. Another tip: run a test cent thru the machine first (noting it's 
  241. orientation in the machine) to check which side the image will be printed 
  242. on.  Even machines by the same company will vary from machine to 
  243. machine.  I'd recommend you use pre-82 cents from circulation for the 
  244. tests as they're FAR less expensive.  You can always offer these test 
  245. runs up for trade!

  252.     The best way to store elongates that I've found are the 2x2s 
  253. available from TEC.  As for display, several people use screw down 
  254. plastic surrency holders or sport card holders.  These work well in that 
  255. you can include a note or photograph with the coins.

  281.     I recently received a large lot of elongates whic included a coin 
  282. whose origin/purpose I cannot determine.  Can anyone help?
  283.  
  284.     The image is vertical and appears to be a waterfall, although I 
  285. suppose it COULD be some type of tree/bush.  On the left of the image are 
  286. three Japanese(?) characters in a vertical banner.  It has the initials 
  287. FB in the border at the top, and I assume these stand for Frank 
  288. Brazzell.  Does anyone know why this elongate was issued?

  580. Hmmm....That seems strange.  I wonder how a Florida engraver ended up 
  581. doing work for a machine company in Northern California.  It's not that I 
  582. doubt you, Willy, but I want to make sure we're all talking about the 
  583. same guy.  The coins w/ JD that I have are all Dotted border with the J 
  584. interrupting the border on one side and the D doing the same opposite.  
  585. Is this how Jim marks his dies?  
  586.     If so, do you possibly have his address?  The San Francisco Penny 
  587. Machine COmpany has been incredibly closed mouth about ANYTHING related 
  588. to their business.  Perhaps Jim can provide some details on the machines 
  589. at Paramount's Great America.  If you're not comfortable giving out his

  717. set at MY COST.  There is not a profit margin built in for trades.  I have
  718. designated one UNIT to equal one currently available elongate.  So, if an
  719. item is listed as 3 UNITs, then my asking 'price' is 3 currently available
  720. elongates. If you have older elongates to trade, then I'm sure we can
  721. agree on something that is fair.   The UNIT designation is basically a
  722. starting point.  If you prefer purchase over trade, then consider 1
  723. UNIT to equal 75c.

  1330. Anyone out there have any experience using 1943 steel cents in squashing 
  1331. machines?
  1332.  
  1333. I have a couple steel elongates that I sent away for. The detail is very 
  1334. good.  I am curious about using them in various machines in my area.  
  1335. However, I don't want to be the one to break the rolling press at a 
  1336. tourist attraction.  The steel in 1943 cents should not be a whole lot 
  1337. harder than the copper in pre-'82 copper cents.  But like I said: I 
  1338. don't want to be the one to break the machine.
  1339.  
  1340. Also, here's a way to clean copper cents without going farther than the 
  1341. kitchen.  Put one or two teaspoonfuls on salt in a cup of white vinegar. 
  1342. Stir and ropn in pennies.  It makes a mild acid bath.  Should work 
  1343. pretty well...  DON'T do this with collector quality coins!!!

  1827. concept of kids ASKING for free stuff just because they're kids has 
  1828. always annoyed me.  I believe that if people desire to donate items to 
  1829. young collectors they will simply do so, and always find it hard to give 
  1830. to those who contniually ask.  However, that's just my opinion, and I 
  1831. hope none of you will hold it against me that I'm an old grouch 8-)

  1835.     Since this list is new and I really have no idea how to get the 
  1836. word out to prospective subscribers I am going to make an offer.  If you

  1839. about themselves and their collections after subscribing.  If they 
  1840. mention who referred them to the list, then I will send that person (the

  1886.     I had asked this question on the old Penny Page Message Board, 
  1887. and Kathy put it in the new FAQ, but still no answer.  Then it shows up 
  1888. here.  So, I decided to take matters in my own hands.  I had stopped by 
  1889. the Winchester Mystery House to replenish my trade stock on Sunday, but 
  1890. their machines were still down.  I was informed that the repair man was 
  1891. due to repair them on Wednesday.  Today being Wednesday, I swung by the 
  1892. Winchester Mystery House to give a steel cent a try, knowing that if I 
  1893. DID jam the machine, the repair man would be there later in the day.  And 
  1894. the results are....
  1895.  
  1896.     It works fine!  This was a Eurolink machine, and it handled the 
  1897. steel cent just as well as it does a copper.  I even rolled a copper at 
  1898. right afterwards as a control group.  The two coins are virtually 
  1899. identical in size, which implies that the steel is basically the same 
  1900. density/hardness/wahtever as the copper.  Now we know!

  1927.     I recently purchased the book, "Yesterday's Elongateds" by Lee 
  1928. Martin and Dottie Dow.  I bought the book from Rich Hartzog and paid 
  1929. $44.50.  I must say that, for me, it was well worth the money.  I thought 
  1930. that I would share with all of you my impressions of this book.
  1931.     
  1932.     At first glance the book is somewhat imposing, 328 pages, 293 of 
  1933. which are filled with photos and descriptions of elongates.  There are 
  1934. only a few pages of general information, although I found the historical 
  1935. information very interesting.  If you collect World's Fair issues, or any 
  1936. of the coins issued pre-1965, then this book is a must have.  Nearly 
  1937. everyone of the 1000s of elongates has a photograph accompanying the 
  1938. detailed descriptions.  Included are variations that would easily slip by 
  1939. unnoticed if you did not know what you were looking for.
  1940.     However, if you are a casual collector, or someone who primarily 
  1941. collects modern souvenir issues, then the book will have essentially no 
  1942. value for you.  This is not a criticism of the work, simply a statement 
  1943. of fact.  The book sets out to cover the early era of elongates 
  1944. (1893-1965) and does an exceptional job.  They even list rarity for each 
  1945. coin.  The price ranges listed may not reflect the current market, but 
  1946. the fact that they are RANGES, so the information is still useful when 
  1947. used to determine relative value.

  2021. Vallejo Coin Club's annual coin show and I spent an extra $75-$100!  ACK!

  2023.     Anywayz, the show was much better then I expected.  There were 
  2024. about two dozen tables and seven of them had some elongates.  I bought a 
  2025. few from everyone that had some and a lot from the two dealers that had 
  2026. moderns.  Most of the relevant dealers had between 5 and 15 elongates, 
  2027. mostly World's Fair and priced between $6 and $20 each.   EVERY one of 
  2028. them had some 1933 and 1939 WFs.  So, I guess if you collect these two 
  2029. fairs, pickings should be anything but slim.
  2030.  
  2031.     One dealer had about 20 1893 Columbian elongates for an average 
  2032. of $10, but I didn't get any as his was the last table I went to and I 
  2033. spent what little cash I had left on a few Golden Gate Expos.
  2034.  
  2035.     Of the two dealers that had moderns, one had 40, mostly coins 
  2036. shows with some souvenirs and the rest mixed.  Prices: $1-$2.  I bought 
  2037. 25 of his 40!  The other dealer had a binder of a couple hundred 
  2038. moderns at a buck each.  They had purchased them from an estate.  I bought 
  2039. about 50 from them, mainly store/personal cards and a few souvenirs.  
  2040. Most of what I left behind were Brazzell rolls and some souvenirs I 
  2041. already have.
  2042.  
  2043.     I picked up several World's Fair issues for you WF fans.  I will 
  2044. be posting a list in the next few hours.  I need to sell/trade these 
  2045. ASAP.  As I said before I spent way too much and since I don't collect WF 
  2046. I'm hoping they can find a home soon.

  2048.     Unfortunately, there weren'y any of the Charleston Expos that 
  2049. Willy asked about.  I did look, they just weren't there.
  2050.  
  2051.     Guess that's about it, overall I had a lot of fun.  Met two other 
  2052. elongate collectors who may be showing up on the list soon.  Admission to 
  2053. the show was free, but it still cost me about $12 between gas, parking 
  2054. and the bridge toll.  Not bad.  I'm happy 8-)

  2183. what you want to do, and they can probably help you out.  I believe, 
  2184. although I could be way off base here, that there are simple metal 
  2185. punches available with lettering on them.

  2187. a machine shop, or something similar.
