Jakes, I think the 2 bike option is the way to go..you don't want your
partner to have a bad experience early in her career. The Serow (XT225)
would be an excellent choice or the Super Sherpa (same class). That
leaves it open for you to buy the bike of your choice. There are rumors
that a new DR400 is about to break loose and it looks really
interesting...

Nice write up about dual sports, Robert.
It seems that controversies arise when one claims or complains that a
certain bike does or doesn't cross one of the three categories (Adventure,
Explorer, street legal trail).
Fact is, dual sports are as specialized as any class of motorcycles.
Picking the ideal bike also means knowing what kind of riding you are going
to do/where you are going to ride. No one dual sport does everything.
Except for the KTM Adventure, which you forgot to mention. TW

Jakes: you must decide which bike you like.
I will say that the DRS(E) is a very reliable bike with reasonable
performance in stock trim. There is extensive aftermarket stuff available
that allow you to upgrade the bike into any form you like, which will give
you performance that will rival any similar bike currently made. (For
instance, on the gravel roads I like to blast around on, my friend on his
XR650L has to work at keeping up with me. On trails, I can go just about
anywhere others with similar riding skill can, and just as fast.)
Upgrading a new bike may not make as much sense as a used one.

SUZUKI WILL unveil a DR400 enduro bike at the Paris Show in October to=20
replace its aging, but popular and effective, DR350 which has been with us=20
since 1991.=20
The new bike will be liquid cooled instead of air cooled as well as having=20
the extra 50cc on tap. That should boost power from 30bhp to around 36bhp as=20
well as giving more torque.=20
The single-cylinder four-stroke machine should still cost about the same as=20
the =A33999 DR350 model. Weight should stay close to its current 118kg=20
(259.6lb).

I have never seen a US model with the throttle position switch, does it
retard the ignition when you are at full throttle? If it does, disconnect
the switch and connect it to a NOS fogger system. When you hit full
throttle the bike will pull like a two-stroker way up in its power band.

I had the opportunity to ride the Yamaha TTR 250 this weekend and loved
every minute of it!! It has electric start to boot, something I must have
on a bike when it comes time to replace my trusty 94 DR SE model. The TTR
handled very well, was not as big and heavy feeling as the DR. The TTR can
be made street legal here in Washington state (USA) without a Baja Designs
kit, this may or may not be possible in other states, provinces or
countries as laws vary.
What it all comes down to is the right bike for the type of riding you do.
I have progressed to more off road and trail type riding an now would like
a bike with better suspension and something a little lighter in weight for
handling the trails where I ride. Sometimes the DR is a bit heavy to
handle in the rough stuff.
The TTR 250 seemed very comparable to my mostly stock DR as far as power.

Hi all
I'm just out of lurk mode for some quick observations, and a request
for assistance:
I've been considering which mid-range 4-stroke dual-sporter to buy, and
while I'm saving up the green-backs, I'm doing some further research.
I'm lucky enough to be in a country where road-worthiness is pretty
easy to achieve, and my primary consideration is therefore: what can I
get for my money.
Pricewise, here are my choices: (most expensive first, least expensive
last)
1) Yamaha WR400
2) Honda XR400
3) Kawasaki KLX300
4) Suzuki DR350
Other bikes are available, like KTM, Cagiva, and so on, but I'm not
listing them as they are extremely expensive here. Also, spares and
support are difficult to acquire, especially in country areas.
So here is my summary:
1) Yam WR400: my first choice, but I would need an Acerbis or Baja
Design roadlegal kit to comply with traffic laws, and this will push up
the price with around $500. Seat height is a bit too high, and I'm a bit
scared about all the electronic things that can go wrong there. Very
expensive (around $7500 here, without any extras)
2) Honda XR400: Second choice. Almost as expensive here as the WR!!!
Some local dealers offer a roadlegal kit as part of the price, though.
Bike is a bit too heavy, and technology is a dated. Very high seat
height. (around $7000)
3) Kawa KLX: This is almost the ideal choice, except that the 300cc
engine and CV carb makes me think that it's going to be a bit of a sheep
in wolf's clothing. I understand that the suspension is only good for
lighter riders, or for very tame trailing otherwise. I would have to
upgrade this, as well as install the 330cc barrel/piston set, and a
pumper carb. Mucho dinero. Also, the roadlegal kit would have to be an
added purchase. Nice bike, but would cost too much to upgrade. (around
$6000, but the suspension and engine mods could easily add another
$1500).
4) Suz-box DR: Very pretty bike, with excellent welding and cosmetics.
The SE version is available here, so I get an electric start too. From
you-all on this list, I have determined that the suspension and engine
need some work, but the basic bike seems a better deal, and it's also
the cheapest mid-size DS bike available here. (around $5300, plus pumper
carb ($370), Stroker exhaust ($380) & big bore kits ($400?), and
suspension upgrades ($400): around R7000)
So the crunch question is: do I upgrade the DR, or do I bite the bullet
and buy the XR, and try and get the seat-height down? (This issue is
critical, because my better half says I can buy a bike if she can ride
it too, and she has a problem with anything around the height of the
XR).
Here are a list of bikes I've owned, so please be sure I'm not a
beginner:
1981 Yam XT550
1980 Suzuki PE250
1982 Yam IT175
1982 Yam IT465
1982 Kawa KDX200
1984 Yam TT600
1984 Honda CR250
1982 KTM 250
1984 Yam IT490
I can also import a Yamaha TTR250 or Honda XLR250 for around $3200, but
I don't know these bikes at all, and it would be a "grey" import,
without proper local dealer support.
Let's hear what everybody thinks! I'll appreciate the feedback.

Subject: (dr350) ADVICE : Jetting, routing of fuel lines with Acerbis tank
Hi guys,
Sorry but... it's about jetting again...
I had a 42.5 pilot jet (stock) and 135 main jet (stock) and the needle
on the 3rd clip. This was with the standard airbox & exhaust. (I
bought the bike second hand so the previous owner might have played
with the jetting too... by the way it's a DR350 S 1993 / 33mm CV
Mikuni carb).
Then I opened the airbox, removed the backfire screen and put a Twin
Air foam filter and a straight through exhaust. I went to a 140 main
jet and kept the 42.5 pilot jet. The needle was set on the 4th clip.
Big improvement in top and mid end but not so much on low revs. I
checked the plug and it was light brown. I had some "blurbing" noise
on the exhaust and some backfire when I closed the throttle after
using full throttle for a while.
So today I went for a 145 main jet, a 45 pilot jet, needle on the 4th
clip, 2 turns out on the idle screw. THE BIKE'S A BEAST NOW !!! The
first time I opened the throttle in first gear I had to hit the rear
brake or I would flip ! Lots of more lower rev power, slightly
improved mid power and about the same top end. I am able to wheelie in
3rd gear without the clutch ! The popping/blurbing noise from the
exhaust disappeared and the backfire when I closed the throttle also
disappeared.
One thing I noticed was the exhaust, some black smoke was coming out
when the bike's in idle. I had to set the idle higher to keep it
working so it's probably a bit rich. I will check the plug then I will
let you know.
MY QUESTION IS : IS A RICH CONDITION BAD FOR MY ENGINE ? Because the
bike never had so much power like now so I would like to keep like
this, what do you guys think ?
I will check the spark plug and put the rev counter to see what the
engine's doing then I will report back to you guys.
About the Acerbis tank, the fuel line routing was a pain... I replaced
the fuel lines with transparent one's and put a WB fuel filter. I just
can't manage to get the air out of the fuel lines and very little fuel
is coming out of the fuel filter to the carb.
PLEASE ADVISE ME THE BEST ROUTING FOR THE FUEL LINES, anyone has got
pictures of their routing that could send me ?
