John:
I have a '96 dr350SE. I also have a good friend who owns a muffler shop,
and nothin' doin'! What I mean is we cut the muffler in two places to try
to accomplish what you want (what I wanted). If you get too far into the
exhaust from the muffler end you will be effecting the spark arrestor (maybe
negatively)_. If you just deal with the end piece for mods, you will make
it much louder.
I went out and bought (maybe) the most expensive exhaust you can buy, BIG
GUN. There propaganda states 8hp gain and 12 lb. savings in weight. The
weight savings is true I weighed the two (stock vs. BIG GUN). I don't have
access to a dyno, but let me put it this way. First the front wheel comes
off the ground under hard acceleration without me giving it any
assistance, during fisrst to second gear shifts, and that was with a 41 tooth
rear sprocket! Second, a friend of mine who has a '99 KTM 300EX, and a '98
600 Husaberg (and plenty of money), had first told me when I bought this
bike for dual sport rides ( I already have a '90 RM250), it would last me
one year and I would be tired of it; now with the BIG GUN he says it will
last me 10Years!
You must buy the entire system, not just the tailpipe, but also the head
pipe. It is extremely loud, but BIG GUN does sell a much quieter spark
arrestor/muffler setup for the DR.
E-mail Jeff Hirshberg at mx@pipeline.com for more information on how to
order. His mailorder website is www.mxsouth.com.

Subject: Re: (dr350) The age old question! (Starting the beast!)
Don't let the "fear of starting" an older DR shy you away from purchasing a
good condition machine.
I've got a pre ' 94 DR (dirt only model) and starting it is a challenge
sometimes (I would not call it an endearing trait). Electric start dirt bikes
are for those orthopedically challenged individuals who want all the comforts
of a street bike for the dirt.
I find my DR starts on the first or second kick when cold (enrichment
circiuit engaged of course). When it's hot and I shut it down I always turn
off the fuel petcock; when starting from a hot shutdown, I'll hold the C/R
open for about 6 or 7 kicks then set it for a start and 90% of the time
she'll fire off. The worst situation is for a spill, I'll at least double the
number of kicks with the C/R held in before attempting a start and even that
does not always do the trick; the engine carb fouls dumping a load of gas
into the cylinder and you just gotta purge the excess fuel.

Subject: Re: (dr350) The Oil Question
About the only thing I can think might cause you some trouble with
overfilling the oil tank is possible blowing of oil past the oil cap as the
oil expands when warm. Get yourself a turkey baster and maybe a legnth of
tubing and just draw off the excess oil.
