The swing arm may take a tire larger than 120 width, but if you go larger,
plan on moving your exhaust & right side cover out for clearance. I run the
stock exhaust & my buddy runs an after market muffler. both of us have
knobby scrub marks on the muffler from 120/100 Kenda Trackmasters. Frankly,
that's more than enough tire to handle the power available, even in the mud.

Hi,
I agree on the issue it is certanly big enough tire (120/100/18), after a closer
examination there is no marks on the exhaust (99) , but i see what you meen it
could be a problem with a bigger tire.
i did bottom out mine several times and, no marks on the muffler.

The DR350 list continues to grow well. We are now at 141 subscribers and have
had just less than a 1000 posts in the archives
(http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=dr350). Thanks for helping get us
started in the right direction.
For those who may not be aware, this list and the eventual webpage that will
accompany it are part of the Dual Sport News cooperative (a not-for-profit
publication providing in-depth information on Dual Sport motorcycles). Please
check out the webpage at http://www.dualsport.org/ and consider subscribing to
Dual Sport News by sending email to Gino Pokluda at Editor@dualsport.org.
This past week, Dual Sport News hosted the Third Annual Utah Get Together. Over
105 riders met in Moab, Utah, for 3 days of rides, fun and socializing. It was a
lot of fun and a great success. There were at least 4 DR350's in attendance and
all performed very well. I hope you'll consider joining us next year in Moab.
The dates are June 7-10, 2000.
Thanks again,

Subject: (dr350) Riding gear..
Ok,
here is a new can of worms. What do you all recommend for riding gear?
Not for racing or anything, just dual sport riding, trails, etc. Maybe
some protective gear besides boots and a helmet.(Items I already have!)
Actually, that might even be good advice for somebody out there. I
wear a Bell moto5 and Alpinestars Tech3's. I love that helmet, even if
it is a bit heavy. The boots are great too, I really dont have much of
a point of reference, but they havent taken long to get reasonably
comfy.
If there is some sort of "dual sport," specific pants or jerseys or
anything that you know of, go ahead and post please,
Thanks a bunch

I just went through this. I wear MSR Gold Medalist II pants (black). They
are dirt bike style pants that are conservatively styled with no funky
graphics. Mine are black with a gray stripe. Anyway, these work great for
touring and dual sport riding. There is plenty of room for knee braces or
pads if you so desire. I wear a First Gear Kilimanjaro HT. Yes, I know it
is a a bit heavy and hot, but it is water proof and has some padding. I
like the 3/4 length. I wear MSR Malcolm Smith gloves in natural deerskin.
Again, very plain and won't win any awards for looks, but very functional.
I wear an HJC open face with goggles attached via the fantastic Quick Strap
(thanks Fred Hink for this great item). My boots are Alpinestar NordTrail
(discontinued).

I have no desire to look like something I'm not...so I'm with Gino in trying to find
"toned" down functional gear. MSR makes the Gold Medal line which is very reasonably
priced in subtle graphics in Red, Blue, and Black. They also make the ISDE pants which I'm
saving for with equally subdued graphics but in Gore-Tex...they go for a bit less than
half a markie. I wear Combat Touring Boots (1/2 a markie). On top, I use the Darien jacket
and it works fine for early mornings and pavement portions of the ride.
I use knee/shin guards under the pants. I've decided against the full chest protector but
might move into the protector without the shoulder pads. The Darien has elbow pads, I take
out the back protector so the Camelbak will fit. I bought a couple of heavy long sleeved
T-Shirts and they worked out great without the racing graphics...

John,
If you get the airbox you can be our test subject vs. the pipe only on
your friend's bike. I have done many mods but never the airbox, many
people swear by it,your results with it would be interesting.
As far as neutral boots go, the black HiPoint boots have a great histoy
and are made by Alpine Star.
Patrick,
I use an HRP Flak Jak with arm & elbow pads, it is pretty good as far as
rock protection goes, unfortunately I am on broken collarbone #2 now & I
don't believe any of the chest protecters can prevent this type injury
if the force is sufficient.
T-Vents: They usually help & can't hurt. Another DR quirk is that some
DR's have the hiccup & others don't, mine never had this problem but a
friend's did.
DualSport tires can only do so much, you can't ride a good DOT knobbie
like TrackMaster on the street in the rain without being very careful,
after all, you can't use the stock tire in the dirt without being
careful either, their dual use only goes so far. Oh well, time for some
pain meds, the collarbone is kicking in from too much typing,
Jim A.
