Tony,
I think you can determine which bikes are good DS bikes pretty easy and the
DR350 definitely falls into this category! However, after that actually
rating the good ones and picking a winner is real tough. It comes down to
your riding style, intended use and ergonomics. This can make my best DS
bike your least favorite and vice versa. If you have any chance to ride I
DR350 I'd recommend it and for that matter some of the competition too. Its
amazing how small differences in design can really make or break a bike when
it comes to individual preference.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Vik

Subject: (dr350) Bottom Trouble
I just got done talking to Scott Products, they claim that I should not use
Progressive springs. I think that they may be right. I called Progressive and
they only offer one size spring for the DR. I have a hard time believing one
spring will be right for a 160 lb. and also serve well for a 250 lb. rider
(me). Anyone have any comments? I am also interested in setting up my bike
with the Kouba links. Hopefully I can get some good info on what springs to
use from one of y'all.

PS I am an intermediate rider, off road only. Thanks

Mike,
I'm 210 w/o gear. I have Kouba links and a 7.6 kg/mm Eibach shock spring.
Works well for me (with the exception of the stock valving). You might
consider the next size stronger spring.
I'm in the process of adding a Gold Valve to the shock. The stock valving
is bottoming out during relatively small jumps, even with the compression
clicker all the way in (not MX stuff -- just smaller trail jumps).

Correct , I just talk to cycle gear, they said currently they don't have any
body to make the air box for them, i also asked them , what do you have for a
DR-SE to boost power , he said a carb upgrade for $278 ( pumper) carb, jetted,
ready to go.
He did not mentioned anything g about JX needle, I will call them again on that
or maybe check with Thumper.
Thanks all for the reply on that issue.

Subject: (dr350) carb mod survey
Earlier today, I said that I took my stock 95 SE and cut off the whole
top of the box, ran it for a while, and it sucked (so much hesitation
over 5K it was ridiculous). Then I put in a K&N filter and, here is
the important thing, I added the JX needle & spring recommended/sold
by Thumper Racing as the only carb mod necessary. On the next ride,
things were much better, and I was seeing pretty much seamless power
at all revs....or so I thought. Today I rode more, and I still think
it could run better....still seems to be a little lean. And when I
was riding some off-road trails/hills, the throttle wasnt nearly as
responsive as the long revving, smooth shifting hiway spin I did the
other day. And of course there is the substantial, predictable
popping on deceleration every time I slow down.
I seem to recall seeing alot of folks on this list saying the JX
needle/spring was the only thing they needed. Can I get a little head
count here? Please indicate, with or without comments, which of the
following scenarios applies to you:
ABSN: I did airbox/filter mods with just the spring/needle fix
ABSNJ: I did airbox/filter mods, and went a step further & changed
main and/or pilot jets in addition to the spring/needle fix
ABESN: I did airbox/filter mods and exhaust mods with just the
spring/needle fix
ABESNJ: I did airbox/filter mods and exhaust mods with the
spring/needle fix and jetting changes
OTHER: Any combination not mentioned above
I guess the above should only apply to SE owners, as the dirt-only
carb is a whole different ballgame.
I will keep track of how many "votes" each of the above options
receive and post the results after a few days.

blah, blah, blah...
I don't get it:
RIDE the the damn thing STOCK,
look after the scoot's vital needs,
get smooth and good,
and then, when your abilty outstrips your mount's limitations
get a KTM or Cannondale MX400, period!!
...why do the factory's shoddy R&D on YOUR Visa and time away
from the dirt?
John Penton would ride a pretty much stock
BMW R26 TO the JackPine, IN the JackPine for two days,
and BACK HOME, without whining about some
missing Shnuba Kuba Earl"s Fork link or a leaky Bing.
A certain Mr. Bates used to market a METHANE carburator adaptor
to run your infernar combustion engine on fermented chicken shit.
Now there's a handicap that would separate the boys from the men:
put your needle anywhwere it feels good and sweet.
Perhaps I'm missing the point of this list.
Try www.cannondale.com
...more than mountain bikes, for sure.
Respectfully,
HPG

Harold, indeed, I think you are missing the point of this list and perhaps it isn't a
good fit for you. This list and every other motorycle list on the web is an
enthusiast's list where people enjoy sharing their experience with their
bikes..tweaking this...changing that...this list happens to be about tweaking and
playing with the DR350, I can't imagine what you think the point of this list is
other than that and frankly don't care.
If this post was in jest use a smily next time, otherwise say goodbye before I say it
for you...if you have a problem with my response post it offline to me personally.

Subject: Re: (dr350) Suggestions for Kouba link useage
>I have a 5.10 Kenda rear tire . .. .
I have been using Pirelli MT 21 tires for some time. I really like the tire
on dirt and gravel roads - very predictable traction. Reasonable mileage
for a knobbie. Throws off mud pretty well. For better traction in the
mud - lower the tire pressure to about 12 psi.
Because I put most of my miles are high speed on gravel and dirt roads, I
get only about 1500 miles per rear tire. Its performance really degrades
after about 1200 miles, as the knobs wear down to less than 50% height. (I
think tires wear about twice as fast on gravel as pavement.)
Last year, I inadvertantly replaced the rear tire with a bigger size -
120/90 - instead of standard -110/80. The tire pattern is the same, but the
larger tire has fewer (21 versus 25), larger (1/2 inch tall versus 3/8 inch)
knobs , spaced farther apart. Not really that much bigger - it fits fine.
Looks like I'll get 2000 miles out of it.
I really noticed a change in the bike's handling with the bigger tire. The
larger tire produced a speed wobble that was very disconcerting, with a
frequency of about 1-2 per second. I stopped during my ride and dialed in
more preload on the front forks, and let some air out (I ended up about 18
psi). That fixed the wobble. Once compensated for, the bigger tire works
fine.
When futzing with suspension, don't forget to consider how much tires effect
handling. TW

I got yer "blah blah" hangin', Harry!
Hell, why be on the list at all if all you need to do is just ride?
If you think my "survey" idea is stupid, fine. But maybe alot of
people on the list like to screw with their bikes, like to learn from
others' trial & error, and dont want to buy up to a better bike even
if $ is not an issue (just described myself). When I get done with
all the crap I'm gonna do to mine, it will bear little resemblence to
a stock DR350. And I will enjoy the process of doing it.
Contrary to what you say in your closing, your reply was anything but
respectful, and yeah, you missed the point!
