Subject: Re: (dr350) RE: Removing your chain
Date: 01 Jan 2000 16:07:09 +0100
Hello Eric,
you can remove the chain and put a new endless chain in if you want. That's what your manual
and Suzuki will recommend.
But you have to remove the 'swing arm' (not sure about the englisch word, it's all the stuff
that holds your rear wheel and the damping system) far enough to move the chain between the
frame and the 'swing arm'.
I guess the mount the chain in the factory before they put the other stuff together.
Another option is to use a masterlink that you can 'rivot' instead of the usual spring link.
But I never heard of problems using the normal masterlink with the spring (and the DR350
doesnt have that much power) - everybody does it.
Hope I could make it clear enough with my english to help you !

Sorry to hear about your BMW -- hope you were not hurt badly.
Then Doug goes on with exactly the kind of answer I was looking for -- Thanks!
I do have a Heat-Troller, so I'll probably give it a try. Also, I'd heard
about your fiber prototype stuff on another list. I hope it's going well,
it sounds like a promising technology.
Then Wayne Marsula' suggested turning off the headlight to conserve electrons:

Of course the DR does not have a parking light, but I might investigate
some options with high-output bulbs or replacing the whole headlight with
one of those HID systems. Hmmm....
Doug also mentioned:

Yeah, it kind of seems like the regulator, at least, would also need to be
replaced. Interesting, though.
Thanks, guys!

I ride my DRS 350 with a Widder electric vest, and sometimes gloves. I've
never had any problems.
If I ride through town, with the engine idling at stop lights, I turn them
off. Otherwise, at higher rpms, I think the alternator must put out
sufficient juice.

Subject: (dr350) Vent hose from carb?
Date: 03 Jan 2000 16:06:55 EST
I need some help! (with the DR for now, thanks anyway)!
I bought a used IMS gas tank for my 98 DR350SE. My question is, my carb has
the vent and fuel line, the IMS tank has only the fuel line (I know you can
order the other shut off that has them both). But, do you have to use the
vent and the other shut off? Or can you just block off the vent at the carb?
What does the vent do? How will it run short term / long term with it
blocked off?

You can cap off the vacuum tap on the carb with vinyl caps available at auto
parts stores. The vacuum tap, actuates the stock automatic fuel tap. If
your DR is a California model, you will also have to remove the carbon
canister and associated plumbing. I never had any problems with the vents
capped off.

Rod asked:
<< I bought a used IMS gas tank for my 98 DR350SE.... My question

line But, do you have to use the vent and the other shut off? >>
Assuming that your 1998 is similar to my 1993 model - one line is a
fuel line. The other line is more properly called a vacum line.
<< Or can you just block off the vent at the carb? >>
You can block off the vacuum line at the carb, and simply use a manual
petcock instead of a vacuum activated petcock. That's the route that
I went on my Clarke tank. You'll need 3/16" rubber vacuum plugs, one.
They normally come in a pack of several at an auto parts store, and
you'll replace it periodically - they eventually crack and leak.
<< What does the vent do? >>
It supplies vacuum to a diaphragm on the petcock, automatically
opening the petcock when the engine is running.
<< How will it run short term / long term with it blocked off? >>
You'll have to remember to manually turn the fuel on and off, just
like any other dirt bike. No biggie.
However, if the vacuum plug on the vacuum port splits and falls off
(which it will eventually, so hang on to that packet of plugs), you
won't be able to start the bike - don't ask me how I know that - and
it also won't run very well at all. BIG vacuum leak....!

Doug Grosjean

Be carefull as I had the same question as you on the
header pipe fitting. Best bet is to call the manufact
and ask them specifically. For instance my FMF exhuast
will not fit any header pipe except the FMF.Yosh makes
good products a friend has the yrd on his XR400 and no

the same price as you stated above thats what I have
and I am very pleased with it.A bit loud when your "on

the comfort of my garage on a center stand.
How do you support the bike to remove/replace the wheel assembly when on the

Even in the comfort of my garage, the front speedometer hub thing turns when
I torque down the axle. There is a little nub on the fork that is supposed to
lock it in place, but the fork just twists and the speedo hub thing rotates
out of place. Doh! What am I missing?

Just lay it down in the grass or sand, make sure your fuel cap is tight. Or
find a log to prop it up on. Moose off road sells a small telescoping stand
that you can pack in a backpack.

Is the emulsion water in the oil? Why is it there? Should I change the

Fellow listers,
I've developed a motorcycle log called "bike log". It contains
ownership info, key specs & data and has logs for service, bike
modifications and trips. It's compact (3 1/2" x 5 1/2"), efficient
and inexpensive. Neat way to keep all your motorcycle info in one

Water vapor is one by-product of combustion. A small amount of the
combustion gasses, including vapor, blows past the rings into the crankcase.
Water vapor will condense and accumulate in the oil unless you run the
engine long enough for the oil to heat up and boil off the water.

little for my cherry '97 with 4800 miles on it.
Teasing.. still having fun on it.. it still does gravel and dirt roads
better than my other two. Just can't afford 3 bikes with out a good

Hi Shayne, Fred Hink will help you find what you need. There are about 6
of us DR650 owners on the DR350 list (soon to be the "DR" list). Please
start spreading the word. You can fine sideracks for soft luggage,
aluminum panniers, cooler luggage, and GIVI luggage at
www.happy-trail.com I just ordered and received a pair of E36's and a
E45 for the rear with backrest and rear rack. Tim is also making highway
pegs for the DR650's. He can get you a skid plate or Fred can as well.
My bike has Renthal bars and Kimpex grips. You can get IMS pegs through
Fred or Tim. You can get Thumper Burley pegs from Thumper and Carb jet
parts from Thumper. Tim (happy trails) or Fred can get you K & N
filters. Jesse Kientech will help you with carbs or any part of the
suspension. I also have a DG skid plate that is very stout. Fred also
has magnetic drain plugs and lifetime surgical steel oil filters.
I've ordered a built-up modified Corbin seat like the one's I put on my
DR350 and KLR650. I also had Fred get me an IMS 5 gallon plastic tank.
Here is an article on aftermarket parts on the Thumper page:

OK we talked about this a few months back and I'd like to try it. I'd like to try
and expand the dr350 list to all dr's...I've just sold my KLR and as I suspected
that has focused my interest on both my dr350 and my dr650. In the last week I've
been in touch with half a dozen 650 owners. So, let's try it for a few months and
get a feel for it. If we put "dr350" "dr650" "dr200" "dr250" "dr400" in the
subject line then anyone who wishes (in the non-digest version) can use filters if
they wish. Please use lower case only.
I've set up the new account and will begin to double-check its readiness by
cross-posting for a few days...
Thanks very much,
Kurt Simpson

Hello All,
Just purchased a 2000 DR650 after much considerations against the KLR650. I
have been on the KLR listserve but am new to this one. Does not seem to be
as much traffic though. I have spoken with Kurt Simpson and Fred Hink
previously about the DR and accessories. I will get a factory skid plate as
my bike is assembled and add extras later (hand guards been first). I am
from Canada and my bike is also coloured different than it's US
counterparts.
A question, I've driven a KLR but not a DR for a greater period than twenty
minutes. How do they compare in your opinions? I feel the brakes are much
better. It sits a little lower, but a like a high bike. Who here has done
much off roading on one? Any thoughts or tips on it's capabilities?
Once again, I'm just trying to get some dialog going. My friend will be
buying a used dr350 in the spring, but I'm trying to convince him to look at
the drz400. From what I've read it would appear to be a great bike, all new
and improved. Haven't heard much about the price though!!
Looking forward to all your thoughts and opinions.

The Dr400Z is quite expensive, in Belgium it costs almost as much as a
Kawasaki Z7-R ... too expensive, I figure :(

No Kurt,
Thank YOU! I for one, and I'm sure many others, really appreciate
your hard work on the list.
Hopefully EVERYONE will use the subject line to denote which model
their message is specific to. If not specific, just don't put any model.

Hello Shayne and listers...
My name is Jan Bradley (JB) and I too am new to the list. Although,
I was on the list last year for awhile while I owned a '92 DR350S. I now
have a '98 DR650SE. I am all for getting some DR650 dialog going. I too
spoke to Kurt and thought I'd give this a try.
Shayne said:

I bought the White Brothers skid plate from Chapparal here in the USA.
The quality ant fit is very good and it is much less expensive than the
Suzuki item. I think the cost was about $70 USD. I also bought the
Suzuki gel seat. It is pretty comfortable but it is a bit too low. It is
lower than the stock seat, but much better on the bum. I think I will
send it off and add some foam under the gel and bring it back to at
least the stock height. I also have the Suzuki rear rack installed as
well as Acerbis rally hand guards.
>compare in your opinions?
I had a '92 DR650 then a DR350 then the current '98 DR650. For obvious
reasons of weight etc., the DR350 was better off road. The 650 is far
better on the road. The 650 is really not too bad off road. I've had it
down some trails and it does pretty well as long as you leave the jumps
alone. It is a bit heavy and softly sprung for the off road stuff, but
really not too bad. I weigh about 190+ lbs. Once I adjusted the
suspension "sag" it isn't too bad. On the road it is great. It is a
blast in the tight twisty stuff. As far as traveling, I haven't done
much. Comparing to the KLR, I've not owned one, but one of my friends
has one. I think the fit and finish is a bit better on the Suzuki. The
front brake is FAR better. The bike in general seems to be better
quality. I have even had my DR on the road race track and it was pretty
fun. Not quite the same as my Kaw ZRX1100, but still just as fun.
I think I've rambled enough... Shayne, do you have a picture on the
'net of your DR? I'd like to see the color we don't see here in the
USA...

The factory skid plate is only $163 cdn and is been installed as my bike
comes out of the crate. $163 is roughly the same as the $70 US after the the
dollar difference, customs tax, and our sales tax.
My bike can be seen at > http://www.suzuki.ca/en/bike/dr650se.htm. When I
bring the bike home I'll put my own picture up.
I looked at the gel seat on the 'net but I would rather have the bike raised
than lowered. They are setting the shock at it's firmest. I'm 6'3" and 230
pounds.
I would also like a bigger tank eventually. At first I thought my tank was
black but it is all silver. I'll keep looking for a bigger one. I think that
Fred Hink eventually can help any one out. I will add the acerbis hand
guards as well. Any comments on those??
I based my purchase on the article at the Dual Sport News web site on the
dr650. I hope to do plenty of forestry road riding in the Rockies.

First after I had run the bike at 75+ for about an hour on the interstate I
ran out of fuel and before I could get the petcock switched to reserve the
bike died and I pulled over to the side of the road. Set to prime and got 'er
started up again and switched back to the normal setting on the petcock and
could only put along at about 5 mpg as the bike would not respond to any more
throttle. I guess I vapor locked the carb (or something like that) as after
letting the bike sit for about a half an hour I started it back up and the
bike ran as usual. This never happened again which I have run the tank to
reserve but I was in town and not running the beast at speed for an extended
period of time so I ignored to first occurrence.
Over the weekend I went riding (which was great!) but towards the end of the
day after running at very reduced speeds, mainly in first and second gear,
the bike began to "load up" and hesitate. This was just like the bike was
acting in the first scenario but this time I could run it at 70+ on the
freeway and all was well. However, if I stopped at a stoplight or just
wanted to run at a reduced RPM the bike would load up and die. Every now and
then the bike would seem to run normally and then about 15 mins later, back
to acting up. I was stuck out in the boonies and needed to get back to town
so I continued to ride the tempermental beast. Just for grins, I tried to
fiddle with the idle adjustment but this had absolutely no effect on the
engine idle, which made me think that a part of the carb had broken. I am
not the most proficient at mechanic work but this does seem strange. Is
there an issue with the DR's CV carb regarding riding style etc..?
Tonight I started the bike up after letting it sit for 24 hours. The bike
fired right up and runs great. Any suggestions as to what could be causing
the problem. So far this seems to be when I have run the bike at extremes
and not during regular riding. I don't think that should make a difference
but what do I know.
Thanks for any input.

Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to ride my 350 for the last
month. Yesterday, I charged the battery all day, then went out to start
it w/ choke wide open. Plenty of charge, but would fire. Switched
petcock to prime w/ choke still wide open -- cranked-up for just a
second, then died. Tried every combo of choke, prime, fuel on & fuel
off afterwards but wouldn't crank again. Ran battery down trying (damn,
I wish I had a kickstart too -- need the exercise). Any ideas anyone?

OK, i've been double checking the lists and working through a few snags on
configuration and I think we're about ready. What I want to do is to give a one day
notice with this message and then pull the plug on the "dr350" list...taps anyone? If
everything is working right each subscriber will get two copies of this message. If
you only receive one, the "dr350" message than write me and I'll double-check your
subscription on the new list. Once the plug is pulled you'll need to change your
address book so that all messages are sent to "dr@lists.xmission.com".
If anyone is confused please write me. Again, let's try this for a few months. The
volume on the 350 list has been very light...who knows the 650 enthusiasts may perk
it up a bit. When all is said and done there is a lot of cross-over info. IMO.
Thanks again,
Kurt

some folks have luck with draining their fuel bowl and filling it with fresh fuel via
prime...

The Acerbis hand guards are well made and very strong.. I had them on
my DR350 as well. I had a get off in the woods and bent the handlebars a
bit.. The Acerbis guards were barely scratched and the clutch lever
unharmed. The only problem is they aren't making the current Rally hand
guards anymore. They have a new one to replace them though. There are
still some of the old ones in stores and mail order, but you might be
hard pressed to find certain colors. I also have the wind spoilers on
mine too. They seem to keep some of the cold air off of your hands when
riding in the cold weather. I just put them on my DR650 and had a hard
time finding purple ones to match my '98. But i did.
>I hope to do plenty of forestry road riding in the Rockies.
That should be fun. I will be taking mine out to CO next summer for
riding too.
> anyone with a tail rack know of a good tail bag??
I have an RKA tail bag and it is good quality but the RKA owner is a
jerk and told me I had must have had a mental problem when I questioned
the fit of a tank bag on a friends bike.. And that was at a show IN
PERSON! He was nasty. But, that said, his products are great. I have not
tried my tail pack on my DR yet.. I have the factory rack on mine too.
Good luck!
