Mike;
I think you may have your chain adjusted a bit too tight. If I'm not
mistaken, the proper way to check the adjustment is to sit on the bike so the
slack in the suspension is taken out; this will cause some of the chain slack
to be taken up also. While sitting on the bike, have someone check the chain
slack to make sure it is within specs. The chain will be fairly "loose" with
the bike up on a stand or sitting on the sidestand and if you tighten it up
in this situation, it will be much too tight when the suspension sag is taken
up.
As for the tightness as you rotate the wheel, I think if you adjust the chain
correctly you'll find the tightness will go away.
Hope this helps.....
Mike

Has anyone upgraded their stock handlebar and is willing to part with the
old one. I am looking for a stock handlebar with weights in it to reduce
vibrations.

In addition to Mike's (TrailBiker) discussion of chain adjusting some more
comments:
The values for the chain slack given in the manual are for the bike standing on
it's side stand - at least refering to the german manual (slack should be 1 to
1.6 inch for the DR350).
The least slack will be, when the 3 axles (transmission shaft, swing arm axle,
rear axle) are in one line. In this position you should have only a little bit of
slack, maybe half an inch.
One more question about jet/carb kits for the DR650SE:
Has anybody a part number ?
Fred, as far as I remember you have the factory jet kits. If yes, did you get
some feedback from the guys who bought it ?

I installed the Factory kit just before the Moab Rally, I put a K & N filter
in, pulled the snorkel, put an IDS II on and jetted with the 145 jet and the
middle notch. So far, I'm very pleased with the results...more testing yet.
The big news was the suspension, absolutely outstanding.

I'm getting ready to do that next...please post your impressions/findings..
especially for the rear..
My suspension mods included a race tech gold valve in the rear, anodizing of
the shock body and fork lowers, installation of Larry Roesler signature
series Progressive springs and a Progressive spring researched and installed
by Mike Walburn (he only supplied me with DUAL STAR part numbers). I met two
DR listers at the Moab Rally, Wayne Marsula on his DR350 and Scott Bower on
his DR650SE. Scott also had the DUAL STAR/Progressive spring and was raving.
We both agreed that the spring added an inch or inch and a half to the seat
height so be aware of that.
The bike feels totally different and very stout. I set the sag at 80 mm
initially and then lowered it 24 clicks because the rear was dancing on the
rocks hard. The lowering made it seem like the bike was raked more to the
front. I coupled the suspension with a K139 front and a K606 rear both with
rim locks running at 15 lbs. blowing through sand was effortless and the
bike was like a magic carpet ride on the 120 mile White Rim ride. I had Dual
Sport News' official tester, Toby Lampson, take the bike for a test run (and
subsequent write-up) he claimed the bike hooks up about as well as anything
he's ridden.
The DR650 is a great bike.

Also make sure none of your clutch bolts have backed out. Had this happen on
another bike of mine and it shaved metal off the case.

Please post this to the list.. I'd like to know too. Although, I have

I got the Factory jet kit (p/n CRB-S65-1.1-TI) from Fred and installed it
but have made no other changes to the intake or exhaust, so I left the main
jet alone. The instructions say to start at 2.25 turns out for the idle
mixture screw setting but that was too rich for easy starting so I've
settled on 1.5 turns out (stock was 3/4 turns out). The new needle (middle
clip position) eliminated the surging I was having so I am happy with the
results. Gas mileage dropped about 5 mpg, but I'm still getting about 50 mpg
on dirt roads and about 57 mpg on the street.

Cycle World names the DR-Z 400S as Best Dual-Purpose bike. The DR-Z 400E
gets a special mention as well. I'm seriously thinking of passing up on my
CBR600F4 for the new DR-Z. It's gonna be a tough one since I have outgrown
my '89 CB-1. Oh I will NOT give up the 350 though. My wife loves it(which is
a real scary thing).
