Subject: (dr) Larger rear sprocket mods for DR650SE
I'm installing a larger, 53 tooth, sprocket on the rear of my 1999 DR650SE.
Now the chain guard and chain guide need to be modified to fit correctly.
Also, the suzuki place told me there was a master link in the original chain,
but I can't find one. Does anyone know if the DR650's come with an endless
chain stock? Also, are extensions available for the chain guard and chain
guide to accomodate larger rear sprokets? Thanks!!

Subject: (dr) Air Box Opening on 1999 DR650SE
I was looking at the rubber air intake tube coming out of the top of the air
box on my dr650 and it looks small. It is oval and the ID is 1.5" X 1.0".
How does this compare with the restrictive opening on the 350? Would it help
to open up the top of the box, or is there an aftermarket air box available
for the DR650? If I do open up the top, will I need to change jetting? Any
help would be highly appreciated!! Thanks!

Subject: (dr) dr350 handlebars
Has anyone cut their handlebars on their dr 350? I cut mine 1" off of each
end for woods riding and added enduro engineering handguards. I removed the
solid metal bar in each end of the handlebars (apparently that is for anti
vibration?). Hey- maybe I even lightened the bike too?
In the woods (which is all I do) it handles much better and I don't seem to
hit as many trees...

You have 4 more areas to ride in than I do.Every time
I go into the woods I must keep an eye out as I will
get into some trouble with the law if I get caught.

Subject: Re: (dr) Larger rear sprocket mods for DR650SE
IF I might ask, Why the heck are you going so large on the rear
sprocket? I dropped down one tooth on the front sprocket and it helped a
bunch off road. Although, it was ok on the street, it was a bit low for
long distance road work. By going to a 53 tooth on the rear, I'm
guessing first gear will be vertually unusable. Do you have the GearCalc
software? By going to a 53 tooth rear, you will go from 4145 rpm at
60mph to 5231 rpm at 60mph. Dropping one or two teeth on the front
sprocket would save you all the modifications to the chain and chain
guard as well. Just my opinion.. Oh, there is no master link in the
stock chain. You'll need a new chain anyway for the length. You'll just
have to grind a link off or use a chain breaker etc...Also, you'll need
a new front sprocket too, unless you have found a 525 rear sprocket...in
which the 525 chain will cost you a fortune. This is a good time to
switch to 520 chain and sprockets..

Check these people out. They make an airbox for the DR350, but I am not sure
if they have one for the 650. It is pricey, which is why I do not have one
yet. I have heard and read about drilling three X one inch holes in the
airbox of the 350 and this is supposed to help a lot. On mine, a previous
owner almost completely removed the top of the airbox. A new friend here
(previous Suzuki dealer and owner of the first dr350 sold in Colorado
Springs) claims that opening the airbox, and going to an after-market muffler
and header gives almost as much horsepower increase as his tricked out dr350.
Of course you will want to check carb jetting with each mod. All a matter
of how much cash you have to burn.
