Subject: (cbiz) Introduction
Hi there!
The welcome FAQ for the Comix-Biz list said that new members are encouraged
to introduce themselves, so that's what I'm doing.
My name's Ray Mescallado -- I write for the Comics Journal and have what's
become a semi-regular column for TCJ on mainstream comics, "The Fanboi
Politik". I'm a graduate student in the English department at the University
of Iowa (which keeps me VERY busy and is why my column's become semi-
regular), where my field of study will be comics, particularly mainstream
comics and the economics of the direct market. As a matter of fact, I'm in
the middle of working on a final project for a Cyborg Culture seminar I'm
presently taking, which is a web page devoted to a rough history and
critical approaches to the cyborg in mainstream comics.
Anyways, I heard about this list through another comix e-mail list that I'm
a part of, and decided to give this a try. My main interests would be in the
marketing of comics -- does it stay a niche, or can it expand to a true mass
medium again? -- and the role genre plays in the market. But I'm willing to
discuss just about anything else relevant to this list, of course.

Humongous Man comes to Alternative Press
Summer "Humongous Tour" to kick of series debut in September
Gainesville, FL, April 28, 1997: Classically trained artists Jim
Harrison and Dan Stepp formed the Ikon Press art studio in part as an
effort to produce the adventures of Humongous Man, a tale of mysterious
happenstance and calculated history. A tale of the heroic ideal and its
influence. Oh, and a tale of a huge costumed guy. It's a wild ride in
the dark on a post-utopian rollercoaster. Now Alternative Press is
pleased to announce the continuing bi-monthly Humongous Man comic book
series debuting this September. Fans of Dave Sim's Cerebus, Mike
Allred's Madman, Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot, and Kurt Busiek's Astro
City will love Humongous Man.
This Summer Jim Harrison and Dan Stepp will crisscross the United States
on the "Humongous Tour" to kick off their new series. The creators will
appear at some of the Summer's largest comic book conventions including
Heroes Con (Charlotte, NC - June 13-15), Dragon*Con (Atlanta, GA - June
25-29), and the ComicCon International: San Diego (San Diego, CA - July
15-20) to show fans their new series.
Humongous Man is a bi-monthly 32 page comic book series, debuting
September at a retail price of $2.95.

alternative comix and film. With news, interviews, articles, reviews,
editorials, convention reports, original comic strips and more, indy
Magazine keeps readers, retailers and industry professionals on top of
the wonderful world of alternative comic books and film.
Our print run for our most recent issue of indy Magazine was 7,500
copies. These copies were distributed evenly throughout the United
States and Canada (with a few hundred copies internationally). 2,500 of
those to comic book stores, 4,500 through newsstand distribution, and
500 to subscribers, complimentary copies, and sample copies. Our
readers mostly fall in the 19-27 age group, with about 80% male and 20%
female.
indy Magazine has tremendously competitive rates with a readership that
can't be beat. Why have your precious marketing dollars lost in a
publication that crowds almost every page with your competitors'
advertising when you can advertise indy which maintains one of the best
ratios of content pages to advertising pages in the industry? Why
advertise in a publication with a short shelf life when you can have
your advertisement seen over the course of indy's quarterly
circulation's shelf-life? If you have questions about indy as a
potential advertising venue, please e-mail (jrm@grove.ufl.edu).

Subject: (cbiz) CALL FOR QUESTIONS: Dragon*Con Comic Trivia Contest
The Dragon*Con Pros versus Fans Comic Trivia is on and will be
held on Saturday, June 28 at 10 AM. The pro team is made up
of Mark Waid, John Byrne, Paul Dini, and Mike Allred. The
catagory is comics from 1960-1985, and we need your help with
the questions.
They can be either a toss up question, such as "What space
sector does Green Lantern Protect?" or a bonus question like
"For 10 points each, what are the effects of Red, Blue, and
White Kryptonite?" (of course questions can be about ANY area
of the comic book world).
The questions should be about characters and stories, not
about creators, or, in most cases, specific issue numbers.
Remember that this is for facts that apply no later to 1985.
If a character in the question has the same name as another
character, be specific as to who you are talking about. For
DC you can use Earth-1 and Earth-2 to distinguish. Also be
sure the question isn't about something that the pro has
worked on. Of course, you can ask about all areas of the comic
book world as long as it falls between 1960-1985...
E-Mail your questions back to Jeff Mason, do not post them
here. For those of you going to Dragon*Con, stop by the
contest and help root the fan team on!

Jon Lewis Announces New Projects for Summer
Gainesville, FL, May 29, 1997: Jon Lewis, creator of the Spectacles
comic book series published by Alternative Press, Inc. has announced two
new projects for the Summer. In addition to writing and drawing
Spectacles for Alternative Press, Lewis offers new stories for Dark
Horse Presents and for Coober Skeber, an underground benefit comic.
August marks the release of the third issue of Spectacles, Lewis' wildly
successful continuing series. In issue #3, Lewis pays tribute to Jack
Kirby with an underwater adventure in "Deeper Than Your Strangest
Dreams". Also in that issue, Lewis presents the third chapter of the
peculiar, hilarious, complex, and highly addictive serial "The Frost
Changes" in which a strange horse roams the countryside attempting to
coax beautiful women onto his back. Finally, issue #3 contains Lewis'
new continuing serial that marks his return to animal related stories
similar to those that made his earlier True Swamp series such a hit.
Also in August, Dark Horse Presents #124 features Lewis' "Outside,
Inside" in which two socially inept twins discover life on two opposite
planes -- the microscopic world of germs and the vastness of outer
space. Both lead to trouble.
Details of Lewis' work for Coober Skeber are currently hush hush, but
it will be unveiled at Comic-Con International in San Diego (July 17-20).
Jon Lewis' Spectacles is a quarterly 32 page comic book series,
available at a retail price of $2.95.
Alternative Press, Inc. also publishes indy Magazine, the guide to
alternative comic books; Jim Harrison & Dan Stepp's Humongous Man; Ed

indy Magazine Editors to Attend Summer Conventions
Gainesville, FL, June 7, 1997: Jeff Mason and Chris Waldron, editors of
indy Magazine published by Alternative Press, Inc. will be getting out
of their editorial offices and hitting the road for the big summer comic
book shows. Readers of indy will be able to meet the editors at
Heroes Convention [June 13-15] in Charlotte, North Carolina and
Dragon*Con [June 26-29] in Atlanta, Georgia. The editors will be at the
shows promoting the just released indy #18 featuring articles on
cartoonists Jim Woodring, Jessica Abel, Jason Lutes, Tom Hart, and Jon
Lewis.
"We see this as a way to get more direct interaction with our readers,"
said Editor Jeff Mason, "sure we get mail about the magazine and that
helps us determine the type of stuff we cover in indy, but this more
personal contact is a lot more effective."
Summer is the busiest season for the comic book industry and this season
should prove to be the biggest in a number of years, "I am tremendously
optimistic as we are just now seeing signs of an upturn in the comic
book industry, especially for independent comics," said Mason, "I expect
this Summer to be a time of revitalization for everyone and the Summer's
big comic book shows will be the benchmarks for the rest of the year."
indy Magazine is a quarterly magazine covering the world of alternative
comic books with news, interviews, reviews, and articles.
Alternative Press, Inc. also publishes Xeric winner Jon Lewis'
Spectacles; Jim Harrison & Dan Stepp's Humongous Man; Ed

Subject: (cbiz) NEWS: Small Press Expo '97 Benefit Comic
NEWS RELEASE: SPX BENEFIT COMIC HITS STANDS IN SEPTEMBER
The Small Press Expo has been the East Coast's premiere "indy"
publishing event since 1994. This year we've gone one better with the
SPX Comic, a companion anthology showcasing the very best in
independent, alternative, and self-published cartoonists. The SPX Comic
will be solicited nationally this July for shipment to retailers early
September, and all profits go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense
Fund.
Not just another "con" comic, this 128 page anthology features new work
by over 40 of the artists attending this year's Expo, with flip covers
by Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) and James Sturm (The Revival). It's an
excellent sampler of what's happening in small press comics today,
including comics by Ed Brubaker (Lowlife), Roberta Gregory (Naughty
Bits), Marc Hempel (Tug and Buster), Linda Medley (Castle Waiting),
Jason Lutes (Berlin), Charles Vess (Book of Ballads and Sagas), and Mark
Wheatley (Radical Dreamer). This is a comic you're going to read again
and again.
The SPX Comic embodies everything that makes the Small Press Expo such a
unique and enjoyable event. Not only will readers enjoy work by many of
their favorite small-press artists, but they're sure to discover new
favorites along the way. From angst-filled autobio to tough-guy
shoot-em-ups, the SPX Comic presents the broad scope of today's indy
marketplace.
Along with over 100 pages of new comics, the book contains articles and
information about the Expo, the International Comics and Animation
Festival, current cases of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Friends of
Lulu activities, and nominees for the first annual Ignatz Awards, which
will be awarded at a special banquet during SPX97.
The Small Press Expo is a collaboration involving every level of the
industry. Comics have been donated free of charge by the artists, and
profits go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Insight Studios of
Baltimore, MD is producing the book pro bono. Diamond, SyCo, and other
firms are distributing the book to retailers at 50% off, and Quebecor is
printing the book on special terms. SPX applauds these gestures of
support for diversity and innovation in today's marketplace. Given the
sponsors and purpose of this event, we expect retailers across the
nation will put their full support behind the SPX Comic.
The SPX Comic retails for $2.95 and will be distributed in July
catalogues for shipment in early September. Limited advertising space
is available at reasonable rates.
The Small Press Expo will be held September 19-21 in Silver Spring,
Maryland, just outside the nation's capital. For more information about
the SPX Comic or the Expo itself, contact Chris Oarr at (301) 565-8340
or email him at coarr@erols.com. For more information about the show
and regular updates, check the SPX97 website at
http://www.indyworld.com/spx97.

Ed Brubaker's new series debuts in October
Detour is Brubaker's new continuing comic book series
Gainesville, FL, June 25, 1997: The October debut of Harvey and Eisner
Award nominated cartoonist Ed Brubaker's new series, Detour, promises
to be a landmark for this acclaimed creator as he explores exciting new
directions. Featured in this first issue is "Life on the Fault Line"
about a man who struggles with his hated roommates and the dystopian
world around him as he tries vainly to cling to his moral standards.
This hilarious black comedy seamlessly blends the real and the unreal to
concoct a frightening vision of the not too distant future. Brubaker
also delivers "Get Out of My Head", a poignant piece about a high school
girl whose obsession with a cherished zine and its creator has gone a
little bit too far.
Ed Brubaker's work on his popular series Lowlife as well as his projects
for DC's Vertigo and Dark Horse have garnered him Harvey and Eisner
Award nominations and a lot of critical acclaim over the years. Now
Brubaker breaks through to a new level as both the art and writing in
this new series are a big leap forward from his previous work as he
progresses from the autobiographical to a lot more exploratory fiction.
"It will have all of the elements that people loved about Lowlife but
will have a lot more going on behind the scenes, a lot more humor, and a
lot more experimentation," says creator Brubaker, "try to imagine if
Buddy Bradley were written by Philip K. Dick.".
"Detour" is an ongoing comic book series debuting October at a retail
price of $2.95.
The official Ed Brubaker Web site is: http://www.indyworld.com/brubaker
Alternative Press, Inc. also publishes indy Magazine, the guide to
alternative comic books; Jim Harrison & Dan Stepp's Humongous Man; Jon
Lewis' Spectacles comic series, and Steve Weissman's Tykes and Yikes
comics.
If you need graphics, there are plenty available. I'll be happy to mail

Subject: (cbiz) INFO: Humongous Man
Thanks in large part to your great support, Alternative Press' venture
into publishing comics is continuing to be a huge success! In addition
to publishing indy Magazine we are now publishing Spectacles by Jon
Lewis, At The Seams by Ed Brubaker, and Tykes by Steve Weissman, with a
lot of great stuff on the horizon!
Our latest title is Humongous Man by Jim Harrison and Dan Stepp. If
you'll take a look at the latest issue of Comics Buyer's Guide (#1234)
you'll be able to read an interview with Jim Harrison and Dan Stepp
about their project -- Think of Astro City plus Cerebus plus Sin City.
Add a dash of ancient Rome and sprinkle the taste of European comic
sensibilities and you have the beginnings of Humongous Man. A very
funny book with a very deep and complex story behind it. Of course,
artwork to absolutely die for.
Humongous Man will start its bi-monthly run starting this September, so
it is available for advance order now. The first three issues are
already completed, so you won't have to fear that any of the issues will
be late. Each issue will be 32 pages at a nice low price of $2.25.
Make sure to check out the Humongous Man Web site at:
