I've heard a few comments both here and on rec.arts.comics.misc about how
unhappy people are with the design of Previews, and how Advance Comics was
much more attractive.
I completely agree, but find that I can't easily specify what the
differences are. Can we (this group) list specific design changes that would
improve the look of Previews?

All other things being left as they are, I would find Previews far more
useful with one minor change: *all* titles they're offering each month
should appear in the three-column black-text-on-white-paper
titles-sorted-by-publisher solicitation section with title, creators, and
prices listed. If they want to add spot artwork within the columns,
great. If they want to have more in-depth "close-up" listings elsewhere
on the page with a "see inset" note in the regular spot as Advance used to
do, fine. If they want to say "for details on this issue, see the Image
section from pages 56-139," great. But get the basics in one place where
they're easy to read, please!

Subject: (cbiz) new comic about models seeks pencilers, inkers, colourists, letterers
South Beach Models
Models have unquestionably surpassed actresses and singers as the dominant
sex symbols and purveyors of glamour in current popular culture. A vast
audience of both women and men are fascinated by the larger than life
m=00=00=00=00=00=00=0C=E0rutting their stuff on runways , in magazines and=
calendars and on
the big and small screens. Shot in the gorgeous interiors and the world
famous outdoor locations of the new International Riviera-Miami Beach ,
South Beach Models is a bold new feature film about the exciting world of
fashion models by former international Fashion photographer Ricardo Scipio.
In step with the zeitgeist of the MTV generation and inspired in part by
the universally acclaimed film "Aria" , South Beach Models is a collection
of several provocative , funny , sexy , irreverent and engaging music
video-style vignettes featuring models. Shot in a style reminiscent of
great European fashion photography , brash and hip music videos and
"Leaving Las Vegas" , and backed by a haunting and eclectic original
"alternative" soundtrack , South Beach Models will bring a new ,
provocative vision of one of the most seductive and powerful currents in
popular culture-the world of fashion models.
Because it has the rare combination of having artistic merit and being
extremely commercially driven , one of the goals of South Beach Models is
not only to make a visually stunning and widely-seen feature film , but to
also create a "new product line" based on the South Beach Models concept.
To this end the feature film will be supported by and cross-promoted with a
book , a cd-rom , a calendar , and an original soundtrack album.
South Beach Models will be launched with a feature-film version which will
appear in several key film festivals , and will have an
independent/arthouse release in 30 to 40 cities in North America followed
by domestic and foreign television broadcasts and video releases.
Shot on an extremely modest budget of approximately $500,000.00 , South
Beach Models is projected to generate gross revenues in excess of
$5,000,000.00.
We are going to publish a comic book version of our upcoming independent
>feature film about models and are seeking creative and ambitious comic

Greetings,
I am Sam Uzi, a new subscriber to the comix-biz list.
I like long walks on the beach, and romantic dinners.
Less interestingly, I draw comixs, but am unpublished. My
primary motive for joining this list is to figure out how to get
published. I have a number of questions about basic technical stuff. Is
there a FAQ for newbie comix artists??

hmmm... I am primarily interested in what to do to get artwork
camera-ready, as it were... or, at least, what format(s) artwork must be
in in order to submit to publishers (not to mention that I need to
figure out which publishers I should target with my stuff, but - hey - I
just mentioned that anyway.. oh well)

Subject: (cbiz) copyright permission query
Hello,
I'm having to obtain copyright permission from DC Comics, Fantagraphics/Joe
Sacco, Dark Horse/Andrew Vachss, and Megan Kelso. If anyone could give me
updated addresses and/or specific names to address my letters to, this
would be very helpful.
Also, if anyone knows how to contact Michael Mangan or Richard Cusick of
Wooga Central (now defunct) fame, please let me know.
Now for a subject of discussion-- how does the concept of academic "fair
use" apply to the use of comics' panels? Is copyright permission required
for *any* inclusion of a cover or panels from comics?

Subject: (cbiz) industry related questions
I'm curious as to the $ amount the comic-book industry raked in this last
year. I know it was around $700 million back in 1993 and I heard it broke
$1 Billion in `94 or `95.
Also, I'm wondering if the number of comic-book publishers is growing or
shrinking. Based on a very unscientific procedure (I counted the
publishers listed in _Previews_ from 3 different months), I came up with
the figure 166 in 1993.
There seems to be concern, I'm a little concerned, about the monopolization
of comic-book ditribution and the negative impact on self-publishing. Any
comments on this?

Addresses should be given within the comics you're looking at.
At DC and Dark Horse, you should probably direct correspondence to the
legal department, or possibly "Permissions".
>Now for a subject of discussion-- how does the concept of academic "fair

The same way it applies to any use of any copyrighted material.
(Rule of thumb: as long as you have as much new material as quoted,
you're fine.)
> Is copyright permission required
>for *any* inclusion of a cover or panels from comics?
No; that's what "fair use" is all about.
However, publishers usually go ahead and get formal copyright permission
just to be sure nothing goes wrong.
If you're worried, check with a lawyer.

There's good news and bad news regarding my survey in the comics section of
my web page.
Good news : I have been getting a lot of replies and have been making
adjustments to the survey format all day. :)
Bad news : Some people's responses were cut off because of the way I wrote
the HTML. :(
More good news : I have worked out all of the bugs and my survey is fully
functioning as of 9:30 P.M.
I've put up most of the replies but many people's answers were cut short.
For example - The first question asks you for your five favorite characters.
I have only been receiving the first line from the text area so I only got
one character from most people. If you replied to my survey before, feel
free to go back and vote again.

End of comix-biz Digest V2 #1
*****************************
To subscribe to comix-biz Digest, send the command:
subscribe comix-biz-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@xmission.com". If you want to
subscribe something other than the account the mail is coming from, such
as a local redistribution list, then append that address to the
"subscribe" command; for example, to subscribe "local-comix-biz":
subscribe comix-biz-digest local-comix-biz@your.domain.net
A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available; to
subscribe to that instead, replace all instances of "comix-biz-digest"
in the commands above with "comix-biz".
Back issues are available for anonymous FTP from ftp.xmission.com, in
pub/lists/comix-biz/archive. These are organized by date.
