Subject: (cbiz) INFO: Humongous Man
Date: 05 Jul 1997 14:20:44 -0400 (EDT)
Thanks in large part to your great support, Alternative Press' venture
into publishing comics is continuing to be a huge success! In addition
to publishing indy Magazine we are now publishing Spectacles by Jon
Lewis, At The Seams by Ed Brubaker, and Tykes by Steve Weissman, with a
lot of great stuff on the horizon!
Our latest title is Humongous Man by Jim Harrison and Dan Stepp. If
you'll take a look at the latest issue of Comics Buyer's Guide (#1234)
you'll be able to read an interview with Jim Harrison and Dan Stepp
about their project -- Think of Astro City plus Cerebus plus Sin City.
Add a dash of ancient Rome and sprinkle the taste of European comic
sensibilities and you have the beginnings of Humongous Man. A very
funny book with a very deep and complex story behind it. Of course,
artwork to absolutely die for.
Humongous Man will start its bi-monthly run starting this September, so
it is available for advance order now. The first three issues are
already completed, so you won't have to fear that any of the issues will
be late. Each issue will be 32 pages at a nice low price of $2.25.
Make sure to check out the Humongous Man Web site at:
http://members.aol.com/inkpotjim/humongous.html.

Subject: (cbiz) More on GatorCon
Date: 09 Jul 1997 13:11:05 -0400 (EDT)
ATTENTION PUBLISHERS/CREATORS
The second GatorCon (formerly ComicFest) will be held in Gainesville,
Florida on Sunday September 7, 1997. I am inviting creators and
publishers to participate by setting aside a number of tables for
creators and publishers to display their wares at this one day show.
(Gainesville is the college town of the Univ of Florida and is located
about 2 hours north of Tampa/Orlando, and about 5 hours South of
Atlanta). The official Web site for the GatorCon is:
http://www.indyworld.com/gator
I expect around 400 folks to attend the show, looking at average comic
book/non-sports cards shows in the area. If you are interested in
promoting yourself at the show, please get in touch with me as soon as
possible so that I can promote your attendance. Don't worry, this is
free with no strings attached, but the space is limited. My hope is to
make a much more enjoyable show by having much more than each attendee
would expect!
If you are unable to make it to the show, I would be happy to pass
out your flyers/promotional material. Also, I would love if you would
send items for door-prizes, etc. If you just want to send items for me
to pass out or to use as door prizes, you can send them to:
GatorCon

In any event, if you would like to participate to some extent, please
e-mail me.

I would recommend:
Quebecor, 8000 Blaise-Pascal, Montreal, Quebec, H1E 2S7 Canada
Phone: 514-494-5443 -- contact: Patrick Jodoin.
Morgan, 402 Hill Avenue, Grafton, ND 58237.
Phone: 701-352-0640 -- contact: Toni Thordarson.
Port, 125 East Main Street, Port Washington, WI 53074.
Phone: 414-284-3494 -- contact: Bruce Gray.
I've had very good dealings with each and every one of these three
printers and would recommend them.
A while back I had e-mailed my advice about printing... Here it is
again for those interested:
Printing your comic - Understanding the price quotes:
Ok generally you will get a price quote for your comic book based on the
number of pages, number of copies, the type of interior paper stock, the
type of cover stock, the size of the comic, whether or not the
interiors/exteriors are color or b&w, and in what format you are
actually sending them your comic book from them to print.
Some printers also charge EXTRA for other stuff that may be included in
the actual quote from other printers, and it is a VERY good idea to
ask if these costs are in the price quote:
- Separations for any color pages/cover pages.
- Outputting your pages from computer file.
- Making film from paste-up boards.
- Doing screens for your greyscale artwork.
- Stripping in film into specific sections of your book.
- Spending extra time working with your computer files.
- Sending you cover/interior proofs.
- Handling charges to get your comics from their printer to the
shipper.
- Putting your comics in boxes and adding lables/bill of
lading.
- Doing anything special in shipping, like strapping your comics
into bundles of 25 for newsstand distribution.
- Shipping your book to your distributor.
- Holding your comics in their warehouse that have not been
delivered elsewhere as per your instructions.
- Accidentally overprinting your comic by a few dozen copies.
I am sure there are a few extras, but those are the major ones that may
add $$$ to your bill. They key is to ask --IN ADVANCE-- about what they
include in the quote and what they do not, and then to ask about each of
these extras and how much they run.

I am currently in the process of making some final updates to the Small
Press Expo Web pages before I head down to Tampa for my last minute
studies before the Bar Exam (ugh). I would like you to take a minute to
take a look at the list of guests to make sure that if I have the person
listed, I have the correct name, comic information, and Web information.
If you are not listed but should be, please let Chris Oarr know so that
I can make all of the corrections before heading out of town (I won't be
back until August).
Thanks, wish me luck on the Bar, have a great time in San Diego, and
I'll see you all at the Small Press Expo!
