  5. Hi. I am in a bit of a rut and was wondering if any of you would have 
  6. some information for me on casting in Brass.  My first attempts did 
  7. not work so well.  My molds split my brass solidified too quickly.  I 
  8. would like to get a hold of the man who made my laurel medalion but 
  9. all I know him as is Wolf, I think he is from Loch Salan.  If any one 
  10. knows any more please let me know.

  26. I would assume the "Wolf" you're looking for is the one apprenticed to
  27. Tryggvi.  I'd get in touch with him, I'm sure he can point you in the right
  28. direction.

  40. There are a few changes to the event announcement in the Sage 
  41. Advice about Kingdom Arts & Sciences.  These are:

  43.     There will not be a $1 charge per entry.
  44.  
  45.     If you are entering a very long written work, consider 
  46.         pre-submitting it to Mistress Rowena.  It is not required 
  47.         that you pre-submit your work, but strongly encouraged.
  48.  
  49.     To "go for Champion", an individual must enter at least 5 items but 
  50.         no more than 12 in 3 different categories.

  53. A reminder:  If you are entering in a cooking or brewing category, 
  54. you must contact me NO LATER THAN MAY 1.  There are some site 
  55. restrictions with which we have to deal.

  68. your group's Seneschal and/or Arts Officer is not on this list, will

  72. I am the autocrat for the Kingdom Arts and Sciences.  I beg a boon of 
  73. the Seneschals of Artemisia--will you do an informal count of how 
  74. many people plan to attend this event?  Arts events are notorious for 
  75. low attendance; however, with this being the first Kingdom Arts and 
  76. Sciences competition, we (the autocrats) are unsure of how many 
  77. people for whom to plan.  When you have an estimate from your group, 
  78. you may reach me by phone at home or work, by e-mail, or fax (the 
  79. information is in the event announcement in the Sage Advice).
  80.  
  81. I would also like to ask the Arts Officers if they will get an idea 
  82. of how many people will be competing in the competition and what 
  83. categories they will be entering.  At this time, pre-registration is 
  84. not required;  however, if prospective entrants would let me (or 
  85. Mistress Rowena or one of the other autocrats) know what they will be 
  86. entering in advance, it will help us find appropriate judges (if you 
  87. have ever had an entry judged by someone who knew nothing about what 
  88. they were judging, you will understand how important it is to get 
  89. good judges!)  Would you also ask your group's members to contact one 
  90. of us if they want to *be* a judge?

  200. Well, how long does it take to read?  If it can be read in 10 minutes 
  201. or less, you are probably okay.  Consider this:  do you want the 
  202. judge to have the time to give your work their best attention?  If 
  203. your article takes too long to read, they may just skim it without 
  204. giving it the best attention they can.

  270. I had a woman from Sentinel's Keep contact me about netting.  I have 
  271. agreed to teach her netting at Uprising.  I have also advertised the 
  272. class to anyone else who may want to attend (the more the merrier).  
  273. The class will be at 4 pm on Saturday and will probably last about 
  274. an hour (if that long--it doesn't take long to learn the basic 
  275. knot, it is just the practicing of the knot that takes a long 
  276. time)  I thought we could use the shire pavillion for the class (if 
  277. that won't work, we can just do it under our shade canopy, but the 
  278. pavillion is a good landmark for people to look for.)  I plan to be 
  279. at the event for at least a short time Saturday night (I 
  280. don't want to miss Jurgen's vigil)--whether or not we stay longer or 
  281. overnight will depend on how Landolf is feeling.

  283. If anyone in the shire wants to take the class, let me know so that I 
  284. can plan for supplies; however, it would actually be better to teach 
  285. it at a fighter practice before Uprising, so that I could have some

  370. Gryphon's Lair at Midge Marsh.  Eric (I think his SCA name is Ruben, you
  371. know, House Trion) has a group that should take up the slack left by my not
  372. being there(Just kidding).  Ruben approached me and said that his band
  373. would work for us at no fee.  He described them as shieldwall breakers.
  374. We'll let those guys and Thunder clash and we can mop up the rest.  I need

  571. Actually, the story of Benkei has him pierced with hundreds of arrows
  572. before he died.  A contemporary of Benkei's, Tajima, was known as "The
  573. Arrow Cutter".  He could cut arrows out of the air with his naginata(I've
  574. done this, too).  He too, met his demise at the hands of hundreds of
  575. archers.

  619. A butcher is working, and really busy.  He notices a dog in his shop and

  623. He walks over to the dog, and notices the dog has a note in his mouth.

  625. butcher takes the note, and it reads, "Can I have 12 sausages and a leg

  627. lamb, please."
  628. The butcher looks, and lo and behold, in the dog's mouth, there is a ten

  630. dollar bill.  So the butcher takes the money, puts the sausages and lamb

  633. bag, and places it in the dog's mouth.
  634. The butcher is very impressed, and since it's closing time, he decides

  636. close up shop and follow the dog. So, off he goes.
  637. The dog is walking down the street and comes to a crossing. The dog puts

  640. the bag, jumps up and presses the crossing button.  Then he waits
  641. patiently,
  642. bag in mouth, for the lights to change.  They do, and he walks across

  644. road, with the butcher following.
  645. The dog then comes to a bus stop, and starts looking at the timetable.

  647. butcher is in awe at this stage. The dog checks out the times, and sits
  648. on one
  649. of the seats to wait for the bus.
  650. Along comes a bus.  The dog walks to the front of the bus, looks at the
  651. number, and goes back to his seat.  Another bus comes. Again the dog
  652. goes and
  653. looks at the number, notices it's the right bus, and climbs on.  The
  654. butcher,
  655. by now open-mouthed, follows him onto the bus.
  656. The bus travels thru town and out to the suburbs.  Eventually the dog
  657. gets up,
  658. moves to the front of the bus, and standing on his hind  legs, pushes
  659. the
  660. button to stop the bus.  The dog gets off, groceries still in his mouth,
  661.  
  662. and
  663. the butcher still following.
  664. They walk down the road, and the dog approaches a house.  He walks up
  665. the
  666. path,  and drops the groceries on the step.  Then he walks back down the
  667.  
  668. path,
  669. takes a big run, and throws himself -whap!- against the door.  He goes
  670. back
  671. down the path, takes another run, and throws himself  -whap!- against
  672. the door
  673. again!  There's no answer at the door,  so the dog goes back down the
  674. path,
  675. jumps up on a narrow wall, and walks along the perimeter of the garden.
  676. He
  677. gets to a window, and bangs his head against it several times.  He walks
  678.  
  679. back,
  680. jumps off the wall, and waits at the door.  The butcher watches as a big
  681.

  1875. to gentler pursuits, and warm hopes of spring.  Crown Tournament

  1902. and the new deadline.  Many of the reports arrived after the 5th, and
  1903. some arrived after the 10th.  My report to you is late this month,
  1904. partly due to waiting for late reports.   In the future, if you find
  1905. yourself pressed for time, CALL ME.  A phoned-in report is better than
  1906. "No report submitted" next to your group name on the Crown's report.
  1907. One of the key aspects of my job is ensuring compliance with the
  1908. requirements of Kingdom Law and the Governing Documents of the Society.
  1909. Failure to report on a monthly basis jeopardizes the status of your
  1910. group.   Two consecutive missed reports will be grounds for removal from
  1911. office.  Reporting via E-mail is working very well from my end.  Please
  1912. note the following change to E-mail procedures
  1913.          Do not send the report as an attachment.
  1914.          Do not encode or encrypt the report.
  1915.          Send the E-mail with "Seneschal" as the first word of the
  1916. subject line.
  1917. If you are sending and receiving your reports via US Mail and would like
  1918. to switch to E-mail, send me an E-mail requesting this.  It is certainly
  1919. easier, faster and more economical to conduct the bulk of our business
  1920. this way.  I intend to have this report mailed by the 15th of every
  1921. month.  I left a few extra days this month for straggler reports.  If
  1922. you have not received your report by the 20th of the month, call or
  1923. E-mail me for a replacement.
  1924.  
  1925. REGIONAL DEPUTIES - I will be implementing a system of regional deputies
  1926. to help administer the kingdom.  The regions will be Northern - Montana,
  1927. Central - Idaho, Wyoming and the shires of Cote du Ciel and Gryphon's
  1928. Lair in Utah, and Southern - the remainder of Utah and Colorado.   These
  1929. positions will require good communication skills and a knowledge of the
  1930. history and players within each region.  Among the duties of these
  1931. deputies will be coordinating projects that require joint effort between
  1932. groups, helping to arbitrate disputes between groups, updating the zip
  1933. code list for unassigned territory, and being my eyes and ears when I am
  1934. unable to travel.  If you would be interested in serving in such a
  1935. position, please contact me.   The selected deputies may continue to
  1936. serve as local seneschals if they wish.
  1937.  
  1938. ZIP CODE ISSUES - I described last month the situation and plan of
  1939. attack.  Here is where we stand.
  1940. 1.   Lord Fergus has obtained zip code books from the US Postal
  1941. Service.  This will give us everything, from which we will subtract An
  1942. Tir, Outlands and Atenveldt territory from the 5 affected states.
  1943. 2.   I have contacted the Kingdom Seneschals of An Tir, Outlands and
  1944. Atenveldt to determine our borders in zip code terms.  There are
  1945. uninhabited zip codes which default  to particular kingdoms, based on
  1946. the first 3 digits.  Maestra Francesca of the Outlands is working with
  1947. me to determine where our border actually is, so that we will not
  1948. adversely affect the Outlands when we submit our list.
  1949. 3.   I have not yet received zip lists from the following groups. All
  1950. branches in Idaho, all groups in Montana, except for Silverkeep,
  1951. Otherhill, Blackstone Citadel and Gryphon's Lair.  Each local Seneschal
  1952. must compile a list of the zip codes and town names spanned by the
  1953. group.  If the boundaries are completely along county lines, please note
  1954. this fact as well. There are several reasons for this list.  There have
  1955. recently been disputes between groups regarding borders that have caused
  1956. ill feeling.  There are new groups emerging, who need to know if they
  1957. can become cantons, or must go directly to shire.  There is disputed
  1958. territory along kingdom boundaries that is causing some of our (in our
  1959. eyes) populace to receive the wrong newsletter.  Accounting for
  1960. unclaimed zip codes will greatly ease the task of periodically updating
  1961. our zip list.  Each group will be able to clearly identify those areas
  1962. they must keep updated, and which are Crown lands.  I understand that
  1963. this information may be challenging to obtain.  The Seneschals and
  1964. Barons and Baronesses with whom I have spoken on this issue are certain
  1965. that lists or maps exist somewhere for the group, but no one is quite
  1966. sure where.  This is vital information that should be kept in a safe
  1967. place and passed on to your successor.  Speak with senior members of
  1968. your group, and coordinate with neighboring groups so that no territory
  1969. is claimed by multiple groups. These lists are vital to ensure that
  1970. local populace are included in specific zip codes, and not default
  1971. allocations.  If I do not receive your list by March 25, I will have to
  1972. make one up.   This information is not available from the Society
  1973. Seneschal.  Corporate level keeps track of zip codes on a Kingdom basis,
  1974. not local branch.
  1975. 4.   I will compile an ordered list of all the relevant zip codes, and
  1976. double check it against the Atenveldt and Artemisia zip lists, to make
  1977. sure no current member zip codes have been omitted.  I still hope to
  1978. submit this list by 1 April.  I hope to be able to provide an update on
  1979. the situation by Crown Tournament.
  1980.  
  1981. EVENT FORMS AND REPORTS - Once again, this  past month several event
  1982. registrations forms  were missing signatures or key information from the
  1983. event article, conflicted with calendar events or were received after
  1984. the deadline.  These problems have made many phone calls necessary by
  1985. Lord Fergus and me to clarify information, obtain additional signatures
  1986. or clear conflicts.  Before you sign an event registration form, please
  1987. check all information.  Remind autocrats of upcoming events to mail the
  1988. event registration form and event article to Lord Fergus and me well
  1989. before the deadline. Check with autocrats of recently held events to
  1990. make sure they have completed and mailed the event report form. THE
  1991. SENESCHAL'S COPY IS NOT A COURTESY COPY.  By Law, I must receive it by
  1992. the same deadline as Lord Fergus.  I must check that required personnel
  1993. are listed, and that they are current members.  I must check that
  1994. wording follows recent Corporate policy changes.   It will no longer be
  1995. necessary to submit the event report form.  This information should be
  1996. report to THL Heather by your local Reeve, and would be redundant on
  1997. this form.  You may find it useful to track this information locally,
  1998. and you are certainly welcome to use this form internally.
  1999.  
  2000. LOCAL OFFICERS - I have still not received officer lists from many of
  2001. you.  Please  include a list of your local officers with complete
  2002. contact information.  I will be checking this list with the rosters of
  2003. the Kingdom officers to make sure everyone is properly warranted or
  2004. rostered.   Establish deadlines as necessary for local officers to allow
  2005. you to meet your deadlines.  Ensure that local officers with Kingdom
  2006. superiors are reporting to them, and notify me when any required officer
  2007. is 2 months delinquent in reporting to his/her Kingdom superior, or
  2008. his/her post becomes vacant.  Report to the local B & B as required by
  2009. them.  Sir Gregory from Loch Salann brought up an issue this month.  He
  2010. wrote:

  2022.  These points are all well taken.  In an perfect world, we would have
  2023. officers at every level who served complete terms, kept excellent and
  2024. complete files, reported every month on time, trained their appointed
  2025. successors in procedures to ensure continuity, and turned over files in
  2026. perfect order to their sucessors immediately upon stepping down.  This
  2027. just doesn't happen.  We all are affected by "attacks of life".  Corpora
  2028. requires that each branch maintain a certain minimum slate of officers.
  2029. The simplest way to check that these offices are maintained is by
  2030. requiring periodic reporting.  The reporting structure of the SCA is not
  2031. a lineal system.  Kingdom Officers are equally  responsible to the Crown
  2032. and their Corporate superiors, and must also report to the Kingdom
  2033. Seneschal.  Local officers are equally responsible to their Kingdom
  2034. superiors and their local Seneschals.  If they serve a Barony, they must
  2035. also report to the Baron and/or Baroness.  Their warrants, however are
  2036. signed by the Crown and Kingdom Officer. Local seneschals are the "first
  2037. line of defense" in ensuring that we meet Corporate requirements.  I
  2038. rely on your local presence, and the reports you send to me to help me
  2039. in ensuring that we meet these requirements.
  2040.      It is a reasonable assumption that if an officer reports to you
  2041. that they are reporting to their Kingdom superior.  However, more than
  2042. one situation has risen in the past 2 months where a local seneschal was
  2043. caught off-guard by the revelation that the officer had not reported in
  2044. several months, according to the Kingdom Officer.  This situation was
  2045. not caught earlier by the Kingdom Officer, because his predecessor had
  2046. not yet turned over files.  Our reporting structure is somewhat
  2047. redundant, but provides several opportunities for catching problems
  2048. early.  I agree that it can be demeaning to actually ask officers every
  2049. month whether they have reported, and I do not require you to do so. You
  2050. must find a way that works for you to assure yourself that up-line
  2051. reporting is occurring.  You know your local officers better than I, and
  2052. have an on-going relationship with them.  One way to approach this issue
  2053. is to ask each of them to submit to you a "copy of the report they
  2054. submitted to kingdom."  Wording the request in this manner conveys the
  2055. assumption that they have reported, and also implies that you do not
  2056. require a special report just for you, saving them work.
  2057.  
  2058. CALENDAR -  The Calendar meeting for 1999 will be held at Uprising, but
  2059. I would like to discuss some changes to the process, and ask you to
  2060. generate discussion in your local groups about these ideas. The Calendar
  2061. is very full, with  only one weekend free, and 22 weekends with at least
  2062. 2 events scheduled.  It is very difficult to travel within our kingdom,
  2063. and difficult to attract attendees to our events with so many event
  2064. options.  It is not my wish to squelch creativity within your groups.
  2065. Please consider the following ideas.  Co-sponsor events with neighboring
  2066. groups, splitting the work and the overhead.  Make some of your
  2067. traditional events biannual instead of annual, allowing for new event
  2068. ideas in the off- years.  If a traditional event always conflicts with
  2069. the same other events, start a dialogue with those groups, to discuss
  2070. ways that you can shift dates slightly, allowing your groups to interact
  2071. more.  While the "4-hour rule" protects potential attendance at two
  2072. distant events, it places those who live halfway between in the
  2073. uncomfortable position of having to choose between events.  This is
  2074. particularly a problem for  the citizens of central Artemisia.  At the
  2075. scheduling meeting in June, the following priorities will  be used  1):
  2076. traditional or showcase events, 2 per barony, 1 per shire, 2): other
  2077. events up to 6 per barony, 3 per shire IF the proposed event has both a
  2078. theme and  an autocrat.   I will be reluctant to reserve dates for
  2079. events without both theme and autocrat.  Space permitting, events may be
  2080. added later, when your group's plans are firmer.  At the scheduling
  2081. meeting, events in excess of the 6-per-barony and 3-per-shire limits if
  2082. they meet the theme and autocrat requirements, AND there is consensus
  2083. among those attending the meeting that the group is not "hogging" space
  2084. on the calendar. YOU MUST PROVIDE REPRESENTATION FOR  YOUR GROUP AT THIS
  2085. MEETING.  If you cannot attend personally, arrange for someone to speak
  2086. for your group.  It can be any other member of your group.  Please
  2087. inform me in advance, so that I know this person is empowered to speak
  2088. for your group.  Without representation, no space can be reserved.
  2089.  
  2090. KINGDOM WEB PAGE - I have not yet posted here.  I had hoped to do the
  2091. HTML work myself, but I must be realistic, and delegate this task.  I
  2092. will be providing Sir Gregory with information shortly to be posted.

  2094.  SENESCHAL'S HANDBOOK - It is in the editing phase.  I have received a
  2095. request to include a section "How to Start a Local Branch."  I welcome
  2096. suggestions from those of you currently engaged in this process, or who
  2097. remember the early days of your established group.   I hope to
  2098. distribute version 1 at Crown Tournament.

  2100. ALCOHOL POLICY - I have seen  and heard much discussion on what this
  2101. policy means, ranging from I can't hand a beer to a friend at an event
  2102. if I'm an officer, to our local brewing guild can't purchase brewing
  2103. equipment.  Please try to address rumor control at the local level.  I
  2104. have asked the Society Seneschal for  an interpretation of this policy.
  2105. My understanding and interpretation is that it forbids the PURCHASE OF
  2106. ALCOHOL with SCA funds.  Not social drinking at a damp or wet site, and
  2107. not the purchase of cooking or chemistry equipment.  Mundane statutes
  2108. affect the brewing of alcohol, hosting of functions where alcohol is
  2109. consumed, and host liability.  I will pass on the information from the
  2110. Society Seneschal when I receive it.
  2111.  
  2112.      As a new kingdom, we have ssumed more responsibility in meeting
  2113. Corporate requirements.  In the past, Atenveldt assumed responsibility
  2114. for these tasks.  Many of us are new to our offices, and just learning.
  2115. While it is a key duty to enforce Corporate and Kingdom laws, it is also
  2116. my responsibility to make sure local officers know what is expected of
  2117. them.  These letters are my way of disseminating this information.  If
  2118. at any time you have questions about how to do your job, please do not
  2119. hesitate to ask.  I will address the question personally, but will also
  2120. share the information with the rest of the Kingdom through these
  2121. letters.

  2195. I just wanted to let you and the Shire know that Kian, Kelwyn and I had
  2196. the honor of attending Torbaec's (Lee Clapp) wedding on Saturday. He
  2197. married a nice lady by the name of Sharyl. (They have been together about
  2198. a year now, but wanted to make it official before they move, since most of
  2199. their friends are here.) They leave for Pittsburgh for his new job, today.
  2200. He is supposed to send email when they get settled again.

  2203. tails. Main colors were cream and maroon. Was quickly organized too, one
  2204. month's notice. Kian and I had a week! (Uh, hey guys, want to come to our

  2206. all that. But it was really fun, a bunch of the guys from his frat came in
  2207. too. Kelwyn knew most of them, Kian too. Old-home week for them.

  2231. which I cut in half and reverse, they go up nicely and cost only $6 
  2232. per 10' 6" pole.  I think that for Ren. faire and any other event it 
  2233. would look very nice to have banners linning the entrance way.

  2271. I don't know that we need the 11 x 14 size.  Sometimes it is hard to 
  2272. find a place to put the 8 1/2 x 11 posters.  Also, it costs more to 
  2273. print the larger size.  We will need at least 150 posters.  Last year 
  2274. I printed about 250, I think.  I also want hundreds of quarter-page 
  2275. posters.  These go on counters at stores, etc.  As far as okay-ing 
  2276. the design, as long as all the information is there, it is fine.

  2417. an all-day demo at Logan High?  The English department is sponsoring 
  2418. a "Shakespeare-ience" which consists of several activities designed 
  2419. to help the students in the Shakespeare Engligh class understand what 
  2420. life might have been like during Shakespeare's time.

  2422. The date would be during the week of April 27 to May 1 (we pick the 
  2423. date).  There would actually be three demos--7:55 to 9:05 am, 10:25 
  2424. to 11:35, and either 11:40 to 12:50 or 12:05 to 1:15.

  2426. We could set up the shire pavillion and put arts displays inside, 
  2427. and do some fighting and dancing.  Also, maybe some games like boffer 
  2428. quarter staffs and tug of war.

  2430. I could give this demo to Squire William but then he would get the 
  2431. $100, not us, and we really need the money.

  2499.   May 2nd is Arbor Day and William and Isebeau have people comming up 
  2500. to work with them, Incl. myself.  No Saturday close would work.  I 
  2501. reciently did one (last friday) for Roy High Shakespeare week, Which 
  2502. is this week.  It went over verywell but was a big effort.  Lynnette 
  2503. played the harp and I was in my dress armor and we talked about 
  2504. meanings and life in Shakespearian Plays, Henry IV, V, Hamlet etc...
  2505. Adam and Natalie were dressed up.  They helped out too.  I don't 
  2506. think that I could get time off to do that. but if someone else could 
  2507. I would be willing to lend them things and to give them pointers, 
  2508. etc...  Would be a big effort.  I'm not sure $100 is worth it!

  2739. through.  But you could make a household pendant or a war banner.  I 
  2740. used fence rail pipe which comes in 10' 6" lengths and cut it in 
  2741. half, then one end fits inside the other and makes for a sturdy easy 
  2742. set up pole which will fit in your trunk.  They cost about $6.00 from 
  2743. Anderson Lumber. I wse a PVC T-joint (1 1/4) for the cross beam and 
  2744. rout out the inside flange so a 1 5/16th inch rod will fit 
  2745. through, and it fits over the fence piping perfectly.

  2897. Helens National Volcanic Monument there's an awesome flick at the Johnston
  2898. Ridge Observatory.  What a rush!  Wish we would have had time to see the
