The only members are those who subscribe. It is up to the founding members
to decide what is "on-topic" vs "off-topic". After that, we can solicit
additional members. My thought is that we should open it up to diocesan
directors and have the main topic be "integrated development" which will
need a definition. But as these lists grow they tend to face all of the
problems normally associated with "societies."
Lists tend to have "threads" that arise and gather momentum and flow
through them...often, there can be several threads running at once.
Sometimes, threads reemerge, sometimes, someone will say "enough
already...we've been there and done that...take a look at the archives or
here is the source you need."
You can choose to have closer control of the list and make it "private" by
inviation only also.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear. Yes, I started it after I became aware that
our internet service allowed for a free list creation.
So, it is up to us to decide how to spread it. So far, just you, me,
and Jerry Kramer. Tom hasn't subscribed.
So, it is a tool to use as we first started thinking about it years ago.

Subject: (cath-develop) listserv primer...
Date: 20 Jan 1998 12:53:57 -0700
Tom, as you surmissed you are receiving your own messages because you are
subsribed to the list. So, if you are the only one sending messages you
will only see those same messages. I will look to see if there is a command
so that you do not receive copies of your own messages.
For the time being, the listserv isn't a big deal. With a very small number
of users it really offers only two advantages to what you had started with
Tom, Jerry and I. First, it makes it unnecessary to keep up with people's
changes in e-mail addresses (something that is pretty common if you have a
non corporate account). Second, it allows for building what is called "a
digest", basically, a record of all past correspondences. This last feature
can be pretty important when someone makes a contribution to the list of
something sufficiently technical or of some excellence that it can be
something of a reference. When newcomers come on board, you can refer them
to the digest to see, e.g., Tom Sonni's excellent description of
"integrated development." It makes it unnecessary for the originator to
have to repost the document.
The real power of the listserv has to do with growth. So, we are now in a
position to expand the list by invitation and promotion to others in the
practice. Each subscriber is able to self subscribe and unsubscribe without
any attention on the part of the other members. So, unlike a private
e-mail list, a newcomer can join or leave without permission and without
any effort required on the part of the other members (for example, altering
and maintaining an on-going address list). So, in effect, you are taking
the discussion out into a greater public domain. Once, there is enough
volume, a subscriber can sit back and "lurk" and benefit from this and
that, cutting and pasting, and can jump into the conversation whenever they
wish.
I belong to the gift planning listserv (actually, I've subscribed and
unsubscribed several times because I was unable to keep up with the volume)
and it regularly posts 15-20 messages per day. When I need advise I know
that I can write "the list" and get feedback sometimes within minutes.
Once the volume becomes sufficient, users may wish to set their account so
that they receive one or two "digest" versions of the days messages rather
than individual messages as they are sent. That is what I do with gift-pl,
I receive the digest version and get one file a day with 20-25 messages
within it.
As for knowing the origin of a message, you have to look at the header and
see that it came from "cath-develop" as above. If you get the digest
version you can see it in the from summary line as you retrieve, it says
something like, "automotatic digest...."
Hope this helps. So, the real question now is for the four of us (when Tom
joins) to talk about whether we want to invite more people to dialogue and
whether this should be by personal invitation or whether we should market
through NCDC or NCSC or by letter to dioceses...
