Subject: [CANSLIM] New High Inaccuracies in IBD?
Sorry for replying to the digest list, but inexplicably I wasn't added to
the general list. I bought my first IBD over the weekend. It seems many of
the New Highs listed in IBD weren't new highs at all. A case in point is
Valassis (NYSE: VCI). In IBD (8/16/1999), it is listed as a NH (40 9/16),
but the "NYSE Stocks in the News" section said the VCI had its high on June
16th (40 13/16). In fact, I found several other stocks with this problem.
What's the scoop? Thanks.

On a fundamental note, this link is to an article which references MGIC's
eMerchant product.

Chris,
The NH does not necessarily refer to the closing price. VCI may have
traded higher than 40 13/16 duringthe day, but then closed below that. But
since it did hit a new high duringthe day it is listed as NH. Sometimes
you'll find stocks that have NH next to them eventhough they closed down on
the day.
Hope this answers your question.

Up +25.59 . That's +0.97%.
Volume was 15% higher than yesterday, but still quite low compared to ADV(30).
An almost 1% up on volume followthrough day. ;^)
The SP500 was up 1% today. Don't have the volume yet.
The day however did not have that explosive 'feel' to it, like WON says it
should have.
A predictable selling rage (by those who bought at the turning point 4 days
ago, and aided by "resistance" sellers and maybe short sellers)
materialised after the gap up. That probably resulted in a nice clean-out.
That's a positive.
Most current leaders are doing fine. BVSN up 9 points. Even QCOM hit a new
high. Too bad it never gave a clear volume signal, so I missed it.

The fact that the market is not giving clear signals probably means that this
rally could continue. The leadership is doing well.

Johan, I initially agreed with your comment that today's Nasdaq move of
+-25.94 points ( +-1.0%) did not seem to have that "explosive feel to it like WON
says it should" and then I thought to myself why wouldn't a +-1.0% move seem or
feel significant? I know it all came at the close which would partially explain
it...but I decided to look a little further.
I started analyzing the past 21 trading days on the Nasdaq and this is what I
found:
Date Day Point Gain/Loss % Gain/Loss
07/20 1
- -98.11 -3.4
07/21 2 +-29.59
+-1.0
07/22 3
- -77.33 -2.8
07/26 5

08/05 13 +-25.83
+-1.0 Initial up 1% day on inc. vol. -Low 2474.41
08/09 15
- -28.99 -1.1
08/10 16
- -28.87 -1.1 Intra-day low 2442.22-but closed

+-3.4 FTD day 7 from 8/5
08/17 21 +-25.94
+-1.0 FTD day 9 from 8/5
Of the past 21 trading days on the Nasdaq ---15 days ( 71 % ) changed by +-/- 1.0
% or more.
Of these 15 days --- 8 days ( 53 %) changed by +-/- 1.8 % or more... 7 of those
days ( or 33 % of all 21 days) changed by +-/- 2.4 % or more.
It's no wonder that only a 1.0 % change doesn't seem or feel significant. I
however have come to the conclusion ( at least for today) that this 1.0 % move is
significant. As such I have been commiting more of my cash to the market...but
only time will tell if this was the right move.
Best regards to all,

I think it's encouraging that things picked up as the day progressed.
This has been happening for a few days now and is in contrast to the way
the markets were for a few weeks...up early, down late.

There is a difference between "did not seem to have that explosive feel to
it like WON
says it should" and "why wouldn't a +-1.0% move seem or
feel significant" IMHO.
Did you see *explosive* buying in good numbers of stocks? I saw selected
buying in strong stocks. And the volume, even thought it was higher that
the day before, was nothing to write home about.
BUT even though we have not seen a real super duper follow through signal,
for me the 2 nearly nice follow through days are enough to be between 50%
and 100% invested. The key words in the previous statement are "for me".
I'm not advocating it.
