Dave,
That's the wonderful thing about stock. You lose, you
feel doubtful. And if you win (profit), you still
feel doubtful (possible future profit).
:)
Congrats.

John,
One rule you can add to your sell rules is a rule that says that you can
always buy it back if some criteria is met. This is easy to say but if you think
about it you can probably create a set of conditions that allow you back in.
You will be surprised how much more clear your thoughts are when you don't
own a stock anymore.
My though process is:
If I willing to sell before the stock completely tanks I can always buy it on
the way back up it everything looks good. I don't wait for a bounce to sell.
I sell early when the sell rules are first violated. If I wait until it is
totally washed out then there will most certainly be a bounce and I will be
certain that everything is ok and hold too long. I use some TA indicators that
must be near perfect for me to get back in. But you will need to determine
what is comfortable for you.
Andy

Bob, this is an excellent point that I apply when in an iffy spot.
"Would I buy this stock today or am I better off taking this money off
the table here, saying 'thanks for the gain' and putting it into a
better-looking candidate?"

1. You had a Plan
2. You Stuck to it
3. You did the right thing.
You were wondering about future profits.
If you have sell rules I'm sure you have buy rules.
If it meets your buy rules re-invest if you want.
I'm glad I joined this group sounds like a lot of intelligent investors

Sold half this morning for a 61% gain in a month. This is following
David Ryan's sell rules. His interview in Market Wizards was amazingly
specific. I also listened to him and WON in a tape IBD sells. The rest
of the position I will have a wait and see attitude regarding how it
forms its next base, etc.
It's just strange how one can feel meloncholy taking such a large profit
in a month. Katherine mentioned something about my profit objective.
And this stock really makes me think about that. I think my profit
object is always to make an infinite about of $ on every trade. Which
is not bad if you are Warren Buffet and truly understand macroeconomics.
But if you are committed to trading chart patterns and turning paper
profits into real money, that doesn't work so well.

stock and wasn't using Sell Rules, I watched the stock drop (on heavy
volume, which should have been a Sell Signal for me), and ended up
selling at a 39% profit.
Study WON's Sell Rules and try to be disciplined in your decision

Hi all... I'm new to the group and also in Santa Monica... here's a
question re: profit taking directed at Katherine and other experienced
investors... that is, those who've actually had profits LOL...
I bought TIVO on the 6/2/03 breakout (8.58/share) and am sitting on a
50+% profit in a month. Yes, it's due for a short term correction, but
I love the product and sales are doing very well. According to David
Ryan (WON's disciple from Market Wizards) I should take 30-50% off the
table, with plans to reinvest on any correctly forming base if I still
like the stock. Or I could simply place a stop under the recent support
which is very strong and clear at 9.25.
I have such an attachment emotionally to this stock. I know it's wrong.
But the rapid success is clouding my judgement. The same with AMHC.
I'm used to selling at a loss, but find it hard to take a profit.
Crazy. Any words of wisdom from the vets?

Please respond to
canslim
Is it possible that Thor broke out from a CwH and is having a follow
through day? Am I beginning to read these things or just seeing things?

Yeap, price action looks good, but the volume is not
there. Still does not mean that it is not a good time
to buy. It just mean, without volume, the BO is not
as "convincing".

Wow,
This stock just made a breakout yesterday, but only rose above 0.6% above
the bo price of 8.22. I saw it last night during my evening review, and
was going to look today for a followthru. I was away from my computer this
morning for a meeting, and come back to see a 12% gain!!! Oh well, on to a
new one.....
