I don't recall that from HTMMIS, John, but it's a point that has been made
many times in this group (number is variable depending on your risk
tolerance, stubbornness, willing to fight the tape, etc.).
"M" is pretty ugly right now, I am not just sitting on cash, but I am making
a far higher number of changes.

I haven't read HTMMIS in a long time (still waiting for the next edition),
but I seem to recall a guideline that says that if you stop out on 3 good
CANSLIM stocks, it's an indication that you should take a break from the
market for a few weeks.
Does anyone else remember that, or am I thinking of a different source other
that HTMMIS?

Hi John,
I can't remember a specific reference source (jans seems to be good at =
that), but I've always been taught that part of reading the health of =
the market from a CANSLIM point of view is not only to read the index =
averages, but also to follow the strength, follow through and number of =
recent CANSLIM breakouts. I don't know that there's a specific number =
quoted, but since the last follow-through day, we've had a paltry few =
high quality stocks breaking out, many have failed and/or kissed their =
pivots repeatedly, and most of the CANSLIM universe is still building =
bases. I think the difference between what I've been seeing lately and =
what we saw over the last couple of years is that, even when these =
breakouts "fail" they seem to be falling back close to the pivot and =
building a new (shorter) consolidation, rather than just completely =
tanking and falling into oblivion.
In my own watchlist, the number of possible candidates has stayed steady =
since the previous FTD* 9/28/02, rather than consistently diminishing in =
number as it had been doing for a couple of years. That leaves me =
encouraged, though being patient and persistent in following these =
stocks while they build a base is testing me in a *big* way!!!

Rich, I don't normally review "lists", but having heard so much about =
AAII's CANSLIM list, decided to at least take a look. I have stuck some =
quick comments on the first half dozen or so, by then I was so =
unimpressed I had no interest in continuing further.
Appears to me that, among other things, they are disregarding RS and =
focusing on EPS (e.g. fundies only, forget "M", momentum, investor =

I certainly may be missing something by not doing the entire list, but =
then I just don't do lists.

Robert,
Did you get this from the web site?
I have the AAII SI Pro which has a data base of 9035, and is up dated
to 3/28/2002, and this stock did not come up on Canslim screen.
What I just got by running the Canslim screen are these 24:
PLB - RS 56
CACOA - RS 79
COVB - earnings forecast 12% and 10%
CW - earnings decline a quarter ago
DKWD - GRS 13, "E"
DCOM -=20
AGM
FBCI
FRS
GWBK
HOV
JXVL
MHO
MAFB
MBVT
NVR
PFB
PORT
REBC
SCSC
SONC
SBSI
VLGEA
WTFC
I don't think any of the above have ever been brought up on this board,
and have not check any yet, but will run them thru the Canslim =
Evaluation tool.

So what do you make of the rebound in DFXI? Breakout definitely failed, and
on high volume. But now it's right back over the pivot.
Will it break down again or was this just a normal pullback, exaggerated by
"M"?
Not that I really care, since I got out. Just thinking about future DFXIs in
questionable markets.

Tom
Thanks for looking a few, and I also have found that they
were VERY POOR Canslim picks, but just want to see what others
may see that I didn't and if any one else has SI Pro
I DO NOT use it for there screens ( 35 I think), but other reasons
After looking at all on the Canslim ranking site that Mike gave us
here are the best 3 HOV 8/11 pass NVR 7/11 pass & CW 7/11 pass
So this also does not tell the full story.

BlankMike,
Your site that you gave us to check stocks for Canslim ranking is =
great, but pardon me if this was asked before
Why you do not have rated the multex rank within the Industry group, =
like over 50 is a pass, under 50 fail??
and the number of Institutions is not rated, yes this is a hard one to =
rate, but if too many on in the stock, would
that not be a fail, and under some amount (again hard to rank) be a =
pass, or is this left to each of us to do our
ranking, and again thanks for the tool.
Went to the main site and is loaded with a lot of great reading, need =
some time to get into

Hi Dave,
On something like DFXI, I like to see it completely reset after a failed =
breakout. That is, I think it would bode well for the stock if it were =
to consolidate and build a new handle (or complete the old one), then =
breakout again on volume. Sharp moves down like the one we saw after the =

That's meaningless in my mind from a longer term point of view...just =

DFXI's competitors, SCSS (a cash flow nightmare), made a substantial =

It tends to be a pretty good indicator of major changes in the markets
direction, particularly, when the A's go over 20% or under 10%.

Yeah, that is it, and what I'm doing after getting stopped out of DFXI and
JDAS. I lent out my HTMMIS book and just got it back. I am reading it
over, trying to get it ingrained into my head. Should not have bought the
two because of the market. The book says that when stocks are failing after
breaking out, it is a time to get defensive. The market is trying to tell
you something.

Don't know if this is what you are thinking about, but from Market Wizards, David

"If I have 5 or 6 stocks in a row that get stopped out, a caution flag goes up."

Anomalies like this are why I don't give a lot of weight to the EPS numbers, better to
go directly to the source, the revenue and earnings growth and look for at least 3 or
4 quarters of strong growth, and not worry too much about that the EPS number. It
can be a good screening tool, but not the final determinant.
