Norm,
Don't think a "sorry" is in order, I was agreeing with you! I think your =
comment about true competitors is really key. One thing that I do to =
make the groups more manageable is to do enough DD to zoom in on the =
leaders or the traiblazers. ITRI's a great example. Despite being lumped =
in with a less than descriptive grouping, it is evidence of the =
importance of this emerging industry related to distributed energy =
generation, energy deregulation, energy conservation, powerchips, etc. =
etc. This one's been on my macrotheme list for a couple of years now. =
Thanks for the link, I'll look forward to lapping it up.

Sorry Katherine,
You are correct, the discussion was about general group movement. I =
was just going off on a tangent because it was closely related and =
seemed to 'fine tune' the discussion. Right now I just use the IBD =
group ranks as a 'stand in' for those groups of closely related =
businesses that I would like to have. Could be that the lists I would =
like to have would necessitate the creation of an unwieldy large number =
of business-groups - just thinking out loud here. Bottom line is that I =
will continue to use the IBD list published on Tuesdays and then fine =
tune with my meager DD.
Oh, FYI, try http://www.amra-intl.org/ for more info on the ITRI =
business model and competitors. With electricity use currently so =
important, and water use fast becoming the most critical of our needs in =
many places, this may be an important industry in the near future.

Hi Norm,
Now I see what you're getting at. I thought the discussion was about =
group movement in general. I still think that watching group movement is =
a key way to mine for candidates, but there are also those strange =
players that move to their own beat, or groups of competitors that move =
differently than the industry group as a whole. Tools such as IBD, DGO =
or BigCharts don't, as you suggest, allow you to construct your own =
"competitor" groupings. The tool I use allows me to track this, but I =
still have to do the fundamental analysis to find the "real" =
competitors. So, take an example like ITRI, which was recently brought =
up here based on IBD's winner's list. Without the tools we're =
describing, I think most people would have missed it. As far as I've =
been able to discover, they don't have any publicly held competitors. At =
the time they broke out, their group stunk. But careful analysis yielded =
this candidate nonetheless.

Hi Katherine,
Looks like you have covered all the bases on this issue. I guess =
the bottom line, at least for me, is that I have not found any group =
tabulations that accurately reflect congregations of companies who are =
in direct competition with each other in their primary business. I =
think you have also alluded to this in the past. Most groups I have =
found, including BigCharts and IBD, group companies together when they =
don't actually participate in the same business. Maybe the only way to =
get these groups is construct them ourselves. Alas, this is most time =
consuming. Guess I'm stuck with someone else's lists. Do you have a =
feel for whose lists are most accurate, in the manner I've described? =
From what I've seen IBD is as good as any.
Looks like a new version of "The Never Ending Story".

Another suggestion for those who may not have access to tools =
with industry/sector rankings. BigCharts has a very good industry =
section.
Go to BigCharts.com
Click on the Industries tab.
This gives you many, many options.
First, on the right, it lists the top 10 and bottom 10 industry =
performers. You can select a time frame from 1 week to 5 years.
If you click on an industry from the top/bottom 10 list, you =
will have 2 options:
(1) Industry Analysis--charts all stocks in that industry
(2) Inudstry Chart--click on any of the industry charts and then =
view it in comparison to any stock, industry, or market index.
On the left at the main industry tabs page is a list of sectors. =
You can graph any sector or see a list of industries in the sector.
I've recently found out from the discussions here on the list =
that WallStreetCity has similar industry tools, but I am not yet as =
familiar with them.

Follow up to what I posted below. I would be willing to post =

could just paste them in and post the workbook to the large-file server =

Jans, if you remember the xls workbook that Jerry posted a =
while back that is exactly what I designed the workbook for. I entered =
the group ranks each week and had worksheets automatically generated =
depicting graphs for each industry group. It works great but the data =
is always old. I quite updating the workbook each weekend because the =
Friday and Monday rankings in the paper are sometimes very wrong and I =
would have to wait for the Tuesday edition to come in the mail on =
Wednesday so I could enter accurate data; and then it would be the last =
Friday's data. I do not know where to get up-to-the-day accurate group =
rankings. But the point is that a graphical representation of group =
movements is sooooooo great for detecting early group movements.
"IBD does > indeed graph groups"
Where do they present these group graphs??

Hi Katherine,
We become so focused on publicly owned / traded companies, we can often =
overlook competitors that are still private. Good point. Another reason =
to just ask the company who their main competitors are.

Hi Norm,
=20

Another suggestion for those who may not have access to tools with =
industry/sector rankings. BigCharts has a very good industry section.
=20
Go to BigCharts.com
Click on the Industries tab.
This gives you many, many options.
=20
First, on the right, it lists the top 10 and bottom 10 industry =
performers. You can select a time frame from 1 week to 5 years.
If you click on an industry from the top/bottom 10 list, you will =
have 2 options:
(1) Industry Analysis--charts all stocks in that industry
(2) Inudstry Chart--click on any of the industry charts and then =
view it in comparison to any stock, industry, or market index.
=20
On the left at the main industry tabs page is a list of sectors. =
You can graph any sector or see a list of industries in the sector.
=20
I've recently found out from the discussions here on the list that =
WallStreetCity has similar industry tools, but I am not yet as familiar =
with them.

Follow up to what I posted below. I would be willing to post =
the workbook for the group each week if someone could furnish me with an =
"accurate" electronic version of the rankings each weekend. Then I =
could just paste them in and post the workbook to the large-file server =
and we could all benefit from a great technique for spotting group =
moves. Of course, we couldn't use any copyrighted data tho :-)

Jans, if you remember the xls workbook that Jerry posted a =

the group ranks each week and had worksheets automatically generated =

Follow up to what I posted below. I would be willing =
to post=20
the workbook for the group each week if someone could furnish me =
with an=20
"accurate" electronic version of the rankings each =
weekend. Then I=20
could just paste them in and post the workbook to the large-file =

and we could all benefit from a great technique for spotting =
group=20
moves. Of course, we couldn't use any copyrighted data tho =
:-)

Jans, if you remember the xls workbook that Jerry posted =
a while=20
back that is exactly what I designed the workbook for. I =
entered=20
the group ranks each week and had worksheets automatically =
generated=20
depicting graphs for each industry group. It works great =
but the=20
data is always old. I quite updating the workbook each =
weekend=20
because the Friday and Monday rankings in the paper are =
sometimes very=20
wrong and I would have to wait for the Tuesday edition to come =
in the=20
mail on Wednesday so I could enter accurate data; and then it =
would be=20
the last Friday's data. I do not know where to get =
up-to-the-day=20
accurate group rankings. But the point is that a =
graphical=20
representation of group movements is sooooooo great for =
detecting=20
early group movements.

That's true. It's the same shortcoming associated with =
all of=20
IBD
> ratings, but it has an especial impact on=20
short-term ratings, such as the
> A/D and U/D ratings. =
However,=20
if charted, the pattern of the ratings (or most
> =
anything that=20
fluctuates, and is affected not by physical law, but rather by =
> human emotions) could more easily be discerned. =
>=20
> For instance, the use of =
moving=20
averages and other technical indicators
> can be used =
to=20
predict future stock movements (even though the daily pattern =
>=20
traces only the past movements of the stock).
> =
>=20
So if the industry groups were =
charted it=20
would be a whole lot
> easier-you could view not only =
the=20
oscillations the group chart, but also see
> where the =
trend is=20
once you apply your moving average indicator. IBD does =
>=20
indeed graph groups; unfortunately, however, there is no =
moving=20
average
> graphed with it.
>
> =
