Right, I meant to say that it would be played for a bounce off the
trendline/moving average, not a long term thing, which is why I
suggested nimble traders, someone who can monitor it daily.
I also noted the lower forecasts for some of this group. TMBR
looks very good chart-wise, but the 2002 forecasts are for lower
earnings than 2001. I am guessing that these forecasts do not
have a high degree of reliability that far out, since I would think they
are pretty dependent on the price of oil, and I don't think anyone
knows what that will be so far out.

Subject: [CANSLIM] Japan's economy
I have heard rumors that some of the recent selling
was from Japan trying to get money to cover bad debt.
Does anyone have information on how much impact the
Japan issue may have on the US markets?
Thanks
Kent Norman

Once again, Tom Worley was right. His best guess was a 50
bp cut; and the reaction was predictable - a run for the
exits. And to think, I was silly enough to get back in
the market. I'm doing a great job of erasing my gains by
jumping in too early.
The scary part is that a mutual fund that I'm invested in
(a small company fund) is now down 36% in 2001! For 1998
and 1999 it over-performed the Russell 2000 - so I guess it
was due, but 36%? O'Neil says to ride out the bumps over
the long haul for mutual funds - but this one is now down
55-60% since my June 30, 2000 statement. Of course, I'm
not cashing in - I'm sticking to long term for mutual
funds. Hope I'm not totally wrong.
Anyway... today is an indicator to me that we are still in
a bear market - and only ecstatic news will change that.

Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] Japan's economy
Hi Kent,
The main thing that has been going on for some weeks now is that
many Japanese investors have been repatriating some of their
holdings overseas as the end of their fiscal year is coming up
March 31. I don't know much about their tax structure, but
apparently assets outside the country are hit heavier than those
within, so there is a semi-annual movement of money to and from
Japan for this.
The magnitude of Japanese investments in US Govt debt is large,
tho I don't recall the figures off the top of my head. Likewise,
they are also measurable investors in many other US assets.
However, they are not likely to sell off major portions of their
holdings, esp. the Treasuries, when they are both relatively
safe, and earn them far higher income than they would get (qtr pt
or less, now) at home.
I did hear that the recent slump in the Japanese stock market
sharply impacted some of the banks capital holdings, and some
assets were retrieved back to Japan to meet capital requirements.
Also the recent ratings downgrade on a number of banks may force
some to liquidate some holdings rather than borrowing to meet
cash requirements.
Otherwise, and on balance overall, I do not see the Japanese
economy having a significant impact on US stock markets. And
since they are a net exporter to the USA, it will have little
effect on US sales there. There are many other countries that are
net consumers of US goods, their economic problems will have a
greater impact.

I have heard rumors that some of the recent selling
was from Japan trying to get money to cover bad debt.
Does anyone have information on how much impact the
Japan issue may have on the US markets?
Thanks

I'm still very interested in this one. Assuming we are blessed with some
small rally before CHBS breaks down or shoots up too far does anyone have a
take on it? I think the chart is interesting. Group has been up there for
awhile but is still performing well. IBD still ranks them right up there
with CHIC.
