In preparation this week, Steve Cleveland unveiled the beginnings of a new offense he's designed during the offseason. Coach Cleveland will be taking nine players, primarily returning lettermen from last year's team. The trip will be somewhat of a homecoming for Matt Montague, who returned from an LDS mission in London three months ago. "One of our games will be in my old area," Montague said. Coach Cleve also served his mission in England, and will travel early to take advantage of his first return to his mission field. Currently ranked 10th on the 14 member U.S. national team, Young is working towards making the Olympic team, which will consist of the top six members. BYU men's gymnastics coach Makoto Sakamoto compares Young to former BYU and Olympic star Peter Vidmar, and pours on more praise. "We've had several Olympic-caliber gymnasts," Sakamoto said. "But I think Guard probably has the best chance (of making the Olympic team) of anyone I've had in 14 years." BYU's Cougar Field is considered inadeq= uate and antiquated, and Provo would love to land the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League, but needs a permanent stadium first. The city and school agree on two key issues: no beer sales in the stadium, and no Sunday games in Provo. The Brewers are willing to make those concessions. City officials experienced strong disapp= roval from the community over the Sunday play issue three years ago while tryin= g to land a different minor league team. Traditionally, if BYU has qualified for the tournaments in those sports, they have opted to enter the tournament and forfeit if they reached a poi= nt where they were scheduled to play on Sunday. The proposed change would keep BYU out of the tournament altogether unless they agreed to pla= y on Sunday. If the legislation passes, "any school that would not change its polic= y would be ineligible to play in the NCAA tournament," said BYU athletic director Val Hale. "We have no idea where this is coming from," Hal= e said. "It sounds pretty discriminatory. We're saying you can't preclude us from playing. You can't deny us a chance to play. The ligament was fine, and Horton should be able to practice at full speed within a week. Team orthopedic surgeon Kirt Kimball removed some scar tissue, and is confident that Horton will be fine. "I saw nothing in the knee that prevent him from catching touchdown passes this fall," stated Dr. Kimball. However, at times he has been met with less than enthusiastic fan support. After working out through the off-season, the beefed-up senior is determined to show that he is the right man for the job. With only new arrivals to the Cougar program backing him up, Feterik knows that his starting spot is pretty much assured, and he has decided to pay less attention to those who would boo from the stands. The fans "are not going to bother me this year," says Feterik. The championship games of the NCAA tournaments for both women's soccer and women's basketball are held on Sunday, and for that reason, BYU will not be allowed to participate in those post-season tournaments. Understandably, athletes, coaches, and administration at BYU are upset and will appeal the decision. "Every team shoots for the chance to compete for a national championship," said soccer coach Jennifer Rockwood, whose team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAAs in 1998. During his stay at BYU, McMahon rewrote the NCAA record book, setting 70 passing and total yardage records. "They couldn't really keep me out of this (Hall of Fame) because I had the stats for it," laughed McMahon. "I wish I could have played in that offense my whole pro career." McMahon was under center during the 1980 Holiday Bowl, or "Miracle Bowl," in which the Cougars came back for an unbelievable 46-45 win over SMU. Jimmy Mac was visibly proud of the team's accomplishments, saying "Nobody could stop us because they had never played against an offense like that. And fans always seem to enjoy watching that type of game more. I know I hate watching games where all they do is run." Following him were football players Kevin Feterik, Byron Frisch, Margin Hooks, and Rob Morris, all sporting new home uniforms. The uniforms themselves feature a dark royal blue that appears to be navy, with highlights of tan and a white "bib" on the chest beneath the numbers. A new family of logos was also revealed that used the same color scheme, and included variations of an animated cougar, mountains, and the traditional block Y. He points out that BYU is being discriminated against because they opt to follow "something called the Ten Commandments, or, as it's known in some circles, the Ten Suggestions." It would seem that it all boils down to money. TV dollars seem to be making more and more decisions, and Sunday happens to be a big TV day. The implications of this decision are huge, because if the NCAA has the audacity to exclude one of its own members from post-season play in one sport, then there's nothing to keep them from doing it in all sports. Dabney Fills BYU's Need for Speed See: <a href="http://cougarfan.com/emailredirect.asp?ArtID=879&URL=http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110003524,00.html?">http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,110003524,00.html?</a> Running back Jaron Dabney, who was named the 1997 WAC freshman of the year, was unable to attend or play for BYU last year because of academic troubles. After a year at a junior college, Dabney returns, and just in time to fill the void left by the departure of Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe. The past year has been a growing experience for the 5'6" speedster. "I've learned a lot," he said. "You can be a famous BYU football player one minute and go back to being just a normal student the next. Now, academics and God come first for me." Besides playing in the backfield, the jitterbug-type runner will line up as a receiver and will return punts and kicks for the Cougars. "We had some very impressive candidates for our baseball coaching position," said BYU Athletic Director Val Hale. "Vance emerged as the front runner once we looked closely at his remarkable credentials. He brings a level of excitement as we continue to upgrade our baseball program. His experience as a two-sport student-athlete, as a professional baseball player, and his initiatives as a coach will take us in an exciting direction for the new century." The Provo High graduate was a three-time All-Western Athletic Conference shortstop at BYU where he played from 1974-78. He was also a starting guard with the BYU basketball team where he lettered three seasons (1975-77). He was All-WAC Academic in both baseball and basketball. Having recently returned from an LDS mission to St. Petersburg, Russia, the California native could get a chance to see his younger brother, who is serving in the London South Mission. If they don't meet up, they will go almost four years without seeing each other. Other perks for Nielsen include getting to brush up on his Russian during the team's stay in Croatia, and seeing parts of his father's mission field in Italy. The trip will also be a mission homecoming for sophomore point guard Matt Montague and head coach Steve Cleveland, who both served their missions in London. Freshmen Bret Engemann and Matt Berry, joined by sophomores Charlie Peterson and Brandon Doman are going all out to prove that they are the future of Cougar football. "We're going to be going at it this fall," said Engemann. "May the best man win." Coach LaVell Edwards wants to name a backup as soon as possible. "We'll see how it goes. We'll make a decision shortly about how it will line up, but it's not necessarily etched in stone," said Edwards. "The problem you have in the fall is to adequately give them all an opportunity for an extended period of time. And the longer (the decision process lasts), the more difficult it is." All four of the youngsters are confident in their abilities and are anxious to show that they can run the offense. Those sentiments were expressed by Brandon Doman: "I'm going to give them all a battle," he promises. "The best man, for sure, will get the job." His leg was sore when he arrived in Provo last week, and he reinjured it while streaking down the left side of the field during drills at the Cougars' first practice on Tuesday. Segovia is a 6'1", 190-pound junior with reported 4.3 speed who turned down a scholarship from Arizona State and walked on at BYU with the understanding that the first available scholarship would be his. He had previously committed to play at Arizona coming out of the Juco ranks, but changed his mind after breaking his collarbone during his sophomore season. Segovia was steered toward BYU by the family of his LDS girlfriend. Of his year spent at Blinn JC in Texas, he said, "I learned to be a responsible adult and take care of my grades." Starting cornerbacks Brian Gray and Heshi Robertson are also back in camp. Gray was rumored to be hovering on academic suspension, but hit the books over the summer and squared things away academically. "Pretty much what you saw is what we're going to do," said Kevin Feterik. The offense used just about every possible formation there is with the shotgun, lining up three, four and five wide receivers, two backs, and two tight ends, and even a little option play thrown in by Brandon Doman. As expected, the Cougars' high powered defense was impressive on the field, but the offense still got a chance to showcase the new shotgun attack. Feterik went 9 of 15 for 83 yards, all against the defensive first unit, and the other quarterbacks also did well out of the gun. With so many guys in line for the job, many a blue chip recruit never really gets a chance to play, but they keep on coming, because, as Brandon Doman says, "Everybody wants to be a quarterback at BYU." Partly because of the mission factor, BYU recruits more QBs than most programs, and at times a logjam can develop. In turn, competition runs high and quarterback controversies are a constant. "We want people who come to Provo on game day to know that the Cougars are here," said Broberg. Pending approval from city officials, the Cougar Club will also paint cougars and Ys on roads that lead to the stadium. "The idea is to get off I-15 and see nothing but blue and white," said Cougar Club director Mike Middleton. Businesses that are interested in being involved can join the Cougar Club. The annual fee of $250 or more is a donation that will not only benefit scores of BYU student athletes, but that will pay itself back. This year, however, with an experienced quarterback and set of receivers, the passing game looks to be a strength for the Cougars. "The burden is on me and them (the receivers) this year," said starting QB Kevin Feterik. Although there are still several underclassmen in the receiving corps, the group looks to be improved over last year. Returners Margin Hooks and Ben Horton lead the group, and newcomers Jonathan Pittman, Damion Segovia, and Chris Hale all show lots of promise. Sophomore Michael Westbrook was also recently declared academically eligible and has shown improvement over last year. Fahu Tahi is a big bruising tailback who ran for over 5,700 yards at Granger High in the Salt Lake Valley, and is expected to continue his performance for the Cougs. Along with fellow freshman Luke Staley, Tahi came to BYU with the understanding that he would be competing for a backup spot behind Ronney Jenkins and Junior Mahe. Now Tahi, who happens to be a cousin to Mahe, just may step in as a starter when the Y takes the field against Washington on September 9. His personality combines with his hard-nosed playing style to make him a fan favorite on and off the field. After a junior campaign that saw him rack up 114 unassisted tackles, Morris returns with the goal of helping his team to win the inaugural Mountain West championship. He's also a prime candidate to win the Butkus award. Doman, who was an option QB at Skyline High in SLC, has for the first time made public mention that he might consider switching positions. Coaches have wanted him to play safety or receiver. Peterson's bold declaration that "There's absolutely zero chance of me leaving" comes at a time when his impressive play might just turn him into Kevin Feterik's top backup. It was earlier thought that Bret Engemann had a lock on the spot, but Peterson seems to be more prepared to execute the offense. The team performed admirably, going 1-4 against professional teams in England, Croatia and Italy. Last year, the University of Cincinnati and Xavier played on the same tour and both came home winless. Todd Christensen and Mekeli Wesley were team leaders during the tournament, and Michael Vranes wowed crowds with his play as well. In Zadar, Croatia, Wesley had 26 points as he went up against two 7-footers. A highlight for Christensen came as he nailed four 3-pointers in two and a half minutes in England. Brighton's Cowan Verbally Commits to BYU Football See: <a href="http://www.cougarfan.com/emailredirect.asp?ArtID=966&URL=http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08271999/sports/18613.htm">http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08271999/sports/18613.htm</a> One of the most highly regarded football players in the Utah high school ranks gave BYU an early commitment this week. 6 foot 4, 210 pound Lawrence Cowan will be a Cougar next season after finishing his senior year at Brighton High School. A three year starter in both basketball and football, Cowan is an all-state tight end and defensive end, and will likely play outside linebacker for the Cougs. Despite being recruited by the likes of Northwestern, Washington, Oregon State, Arizona, Stanford, Colorado, Nebraska, and Michigan State, Cowan said his choice really came down to BYU and Utah. Cowan stated, "I felt that BYU was the place for me.... I am excited and honored to be part of the great football tradition at BYU." After playing a year at Colorado, Edwards came to the Y, rejoining his high school friend Will Snowden, and earned himself a spot on the team. Now, his former coach Rick Neuheisel is coaching the Washington Huskies, who come to Provo the Thursday after next. When Coach Edwards placed the ball in the red zone, the offense opened things up by scoring repeatedly, which didn't set well with the defense. Tempers flared and the play turned very intense, even igniting a few scuffles. Senior fullback Kalani Sitake chalked up the emotion to being tired of playing each other in practice. "It's all a matter of us wanting to get on and play the University of Washington," he said. The vaunted defense was obviously miffed by all the scores, and turned up the intensity in the goal-line drills, repeatedly stuffing the offense. "They (the defense) started screaming for the coaches to put the ball on the one-inch line because they'd stop us," quarterback Bret Engemann said. "It got nuts." Many of this year's projected starters saw plenty of action last year, and the newcomers look like they'll step right in where their predecessors left off. For the third year, the "all-sport pass," which gives admission to all NCAA-sanctioned sports, will come with the football tickets. While tickets for the six home football games are assigned seating, the all-sport pass gives admission to all home events in the other sports on a "first come, first served" basis. "We started it to make it easier for students to come to the games and it has been a huge hit," said Mike Deaver, Athletic Marketing Director. Tickets go on sale at 7 a.m. Thursday, and with this year's outstanding home football schedule and so many highly ranked teams in other sports, the passes will probably sell fast. The package is priced at $56. Morris Getting Tired of Attention See: <a href="http://www.cougarfan.com/emailredirect.asp?ArtID=977&URL=http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08291999/sports/19392.htm">http://www.sltrib.com/1999/aug/08291999/sports/19392.htm</a> Senior linebacker Rob Morris has been somewhat of a magnet for cameras and sportswriters during his time at BYU, but now the man known as "Superfreak" or "Freight Train" is starting to get fed up with all the hype. His play on the field (and accompanying antics, such as making snow angels in the end zone after returning an interception for a touchdown) is only half the reason he's so popular with the press and the fans. He's also articulate and fun to listen to. "I hear from teachers and classmates all the time how surprised they are that I can complete a coherent sentence;" he said, "that I can use polysyllabic words. It's like middle linebackers aren't supposed to be able to do that." Morris is still willing to talk your ear off about any one of a thousand things, but when the conversation returns to football, he rolls his eyes. "We could be good this year," he said. "But . . . let's just go play. It's go time now. I'm ready. There's been too much talk. It's time to back it up." However, after the Cheifs GM repeatedly cussed at Tait, Big John walked out and went home. Agent Ethan Locke said Tait, who served two years on a Mormon mission, walked out of Peterson's office rather than be cursed at. "None of you guys would like to be treated like we were treated," said Locke. "He used the 'F' word four or five times when he was yelling at John and trying to intimidate him. John's a strong Mormon. After the second one, he stood up and said this is over. His focus had been drawn from basketball to personal problems, and his performance on the court showed it. Going against advice to redshirt a year, he played for most of the season, but didn't live up to his performance as a freshman. Things have changed in a big way, though. Wesley has dropped back down to his high school weight, he's in shape, and his shot is sighted in. His play during the team's recent European tour was key to the team's success, as he notched over 20 points in three of five games. He was able to play aggressively in the low post as well as hit outside shots, and now he's ready for a new season.
