  30. BYU is looking good, having steamrolled both opponents so far this
  31. season and putting up nation-leading offensive statistics.  Now a real
  32. test appears as the Cougs leave the friendly confines of LaVell Edwards
  33. Stadium and travel to California.  Watch for more of Gary Crowton's
  34. playbook to open this week, hopefully catching the Golden Bears
  35. offguard.
  36.  
  37. Defensively, the Cougars really started to gel last week, holding the
  38. Wolf Pack of Nevada scoreless until the third-stringers surrendered a
  39. meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter.  BYU's front seven have to
  40. be salivating after watching film on Cal's loss last week, because the
  41. Bear offensive line were beaten all day, and quarterback Kyle Boller
  42. spent a good part of the day throwing on the run.
  43.  
  44. Cal is led by highly respected head coach Tom Holmoe, who was an
  45. all-conference safety for BYU in the early '80s.  After winning three
  46. Super Bowls with the 49ers, Holmoe returned to Provo as a graduate
  47. assistant in 1990 and '91.  He then was a defensive coach for Stanford,
  48. followed by the 49ers, before going to Cal as defensive coordinator in
  49. 1996.  He replaced Steve Mariucci as head coach the next year and has
  50. been at the helm of Cal's Program ever since.  With the hiring of past
  51. UCLA offensive coordinator Al Borges, this is supposed to be Holmoe's
  52. breakout year with the Golden Bears, but his team is coming off of a
  53. devastating 44-17 home loss to Illinois. They were able to move the ball
  54. well, and actually outgained the Fighting Illini in total yardage, but a
  55. bevy of turnovers made it nearly impossible for them to stay in the
  56. game.

  58. Coach Holmoe has been able to field some great defenses during his time
  59. at Cal, producing first round NFL picks Deltha O'Neal in 2000 and Andre
  60. Carter in 2001.  This year's team has a defensive backfield that's
  61. heralded as the best in the PAC-10, but last week was no indication of
  62. that.  Confusion reigned supreme as Illinois was able to put up 297
  63. yards through the air. Cal's DBs are chalking the slow start up to
  64. opening-game jitters, and vow to do better against BYU.

  71. BYU gets to see what they're really made of as they go on the road
  72. against a solid opponent.  A win over Cal would start to get the Cougars
  73. a little more national attention.
  74.  
  75. Cal needs to salvage some semblance of respect after last week's
  76. drubbing. Coach Holmoe would probably benefit as much as anybody by
  77. beating the Cougars, as he has vowed to lead the Golden Bears to a
  78. winning record this season or step down.

  87. #7, Levi Madarieta (S) -- His first game in a Cougar uniform last week
  88. yielded this University of Washington transfer four tackles, an
  89. interception, and a reputation as a hard hitter.

  91. #8, Mike Rigell (WR) -- Besides his receiving duties, he's been a
  92. fearless punt returner this season.  If Cal continues their special team
  93. blunders that plagued them last week, he could break some big ones.

  95. #55, Justin Ena (LB) -- He'll be expected to help shut down the running
  96. attack of Igber and Williams.

  98. #95, Ifo Pili (DL) -- The big guy is all he was before his mission. . .

  103. #7, Kyle Boller (QB) -- A highly touted freshman when he played in Provo
  104. two years ago, Boller has matured into a solid team leader.  His
  105. confidence and accuracy has increased as he's developed.

  107. #14, Mark-Christian Jensen (PK) -- This product of Pleasant Grove High
  108. School wanted to go to BYU until he realized he would spend the first
  109. half of his college career standing on the sidelines watching Owen
  110. Pochman do the kicking.  After leading the Golden Bears in scoring last
  111. season, he returned to Utah Valley and worked out with Matt Payne and
  112. Aaron Edmonds this past summer.

  114. #30, Joe Igber (RB) -- This junior was a bright spot for Cal last week,
  115. carrying 21 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns against Illinois. The
  116. bowling-ball shaped Hawaiian has had six 100-yard games in his career,
  117. his first coming in Provo in 1999.

  119. #49, Scott Fujita (LB) -- This senior outside linebacker has all the
  120. physical tools to move on to the NFL.

  143. last week's game.

  543. BYU is ready to get back on the gridiron after being idle since
  544. September 8th due to a postponed MSU game and a bye week.  The big
  545. question offensively for the Cougs is if the layoff has affected their
  546. timing and quick-strike ability.  Judging by comments from the players
  547. and coaches, they shouldn't have any trouble getting the momentum
  548. rolling again.  The Cougars have been able to move the ball quickly down
  549. the field, and are an amazing 17 of 17 from the red zone so far this
  550. season, scoring 15 TDs and 2 field goals from inside the 20 yard line,
  551. while holding opponents to 7 of 13.

  553. UNLV is in a moment of crisis after starting the season with three
  554. heart-wrenching losses to Arkansas, Northwestern, and Arizona.  Back in
  555. August, the Rebels were media darlings, being picked by some writers to
  556. win the MWC and send quarterback Jason Thomas into Heisman contention.
  557. Now, with Thomas not even completing 40% of his passes, the Rebs have
  558. tailspinned into a sad state of affairs.  UNLV's defense and special
  559. teams have been solid, but until they're able to spark some offense,
  560. they're not going to be able to keep up with the likes of BYU.

  567. BYU needs to beat the Rebels convincingly or any chance of national
  568. respect will have been dashed to pieces.  Another win over a winless
  569. team may not boost the Cougs much in the polls, but a loss would
  570. certainly sink them.

  572. UNLV is starting a new season with the beginning of conference play.  A
  573. win against #20 BYU in front of a stadium that will be sold out for only
  574. the third time in history would go a long way toward easing the pain of
  575. their early season skid.

  584. #4, Jernaro Gilford (CB) -- So far this season, opponents haven't been
  585. throwing to his side of the field very often.

  587. #11, Brandon Doman (QB) -- His ability to read UNLV's defense and make
  588. quick decisions will make all the difference for the Cougar offense on
  589. Saturday.

  591. #20, Reno Mahe (WR) -- His 12 receptions vs. Tulane were the first time
  592. in four years that a Cougar has registered in the double digits for
  593. catches. His elusiveness makes him able to turn ordinary catches into
  594. big gains.

  596. #92, Ryan Denney (DE) -- It will be interesting to watch him go to work
  597. on Saturday after UNLV's offensive tackles said he's "just average."

  601. #2, Jason Thomas (QB) -- A 6'4" 230 pound athlete, Thomas has suffered a
  602. slow start to his junior season, but he'll be looking to prove his
  603. ability against the Cougs.  He's a dangerous runner if he gets around
  604. the end of the line.

  606. #6, Dominique Dorsey (RB) -- This 5'6" freshman is basically a James Dye
  607. in a red and gray uniform.  He would be leading the nation with a
  608. whopping 55 yards per punt return, but with only three on the season,
  609. doesn't quite qualify for national statistics.

  611. #8, Michael Johnson (WR) -- He set an MWC record two weeks ago with 174
  612. receiving yards against Northwestern and is leading the Rebels along
  613. with fellow receiver Troy Mason (#86).

  615. #43, James Sunia (LB) -- Currently eighth on the school's career tackle
  616. leaders list, he had missed 11 straight games with a knee injury before
  617. playing last week and getting 11 tackles.  30 more will make him UNLV's
  618. top tackler in school history.
