  54. Scene 21
  55.  
  56. "Geez, and then Buffy ran off?" asked Willow curiously. The Sunnydale High
  57. library seemed so cold and empty knowing that Giles wasn't there. 
  58.  
  59. Xander answered with a nod. Willow's look of distress brought the comforting
  60. arm of Oz.
  61.  
  62. "I went after her, but she being the superhero Slayer girl and all she took
  63. off like the Flash," Cordelia further answered.
  64.  
  65. "Um, did Principal Snyder care that we missed the rest of the school day?"
  66. asked Xander in an attempt to change the subject.
  67.  
  68. "No, he found some other students to be anal retentative with and seemed to
  69. forget about you guys," replied Oz.
  70.  
  71. "What do we do now?" wondered Cordelia.
  72.  
  73. Xander began, "What can we do? We're just the Slayerettes, we'll just have to
  74. wait for-"
  75.  
  76. "Buffy!" greeted Xander.
  77.  
  78. "Where have you been?" Willow questioned.
  79.  
  80. "Taking an afternoon stroll to sort things out. I've been quite the strolling
  81. girl lately," explained Buffy.
  82.  
  83. She continued, "I'm sorry to have to skip the small talk, but if no one minds
  84. I'd like to get at slaying this necromancer of ours."
  85.  
  86. "But, Giles-" started Willow.
  87.  
  88. "Giles will have to deal with his own issues. We'll take care of saving the
  89. world without him," interrupted Buffy.
  90.  
  91. "Any luck with the book you were going to scan?" asked Buffy.
  92.  
  93. "Yeah, actually, it's partly in Old English, but there's a lot of quotations
  94. in another strange language. There was reference to a method for creating a
  95. vampire from scratch. Well, not completely from scratch. You do need a useable
  96. corpse. Anyway, it would explain why that vampire didn't turn to ashes very
  97. quickly," Willow said in a knowledgeable fashion.
  98.  
  99. "How?" wondered Xander.
  100.  
  101. "Well, the vampires we're used to have been diluted by generations of mixing
  102. with the blood of humans. What probably happend is this necromancer created a
  103. vampire that wasn't so watered down," explained Willow.
  104.  
  105. "So that's what I fought with last night?" inquired Buffy.
  106.  
  107. "Probably not. That was probably just a vampire that was sired by the new
  108. one," answered Willow.
  109.  
  110. "Great, so now we have a whole bloodline of vamps in Sunnydale that stronger,
  111. better, and all around nastier," said Xander.
  112.  
  113. "I'm no expert on fighting the forces of darkness or anything, but wouldn't
  114. the best thing to do be slaying this new bad ass vampire before he sires a
  115. super race," suggested Oz.
  116.  
  117. "Sounds good to me," agreed Buffy.
  118.  
  119. "We can stay and research how to get rid of this necromancer guy while you're
  120. out hunting," offered Willow.
  121.  
  122. "You guys can stay here and do the bookworm thing, I for one think Buffy could
  123. use some backup on this one," Xander said valiantly.
  124.  
  125. "No, you should really go to Giles' place again," quietly said Buffy.
  126.  
  127. "What happened to letting him deal with his own issues?" questioned Xander.
  128.  
  129. Buffy looked downward and finally said, "We really do need him."
  130.  
  131. "And by 'we' you mean you?" asked Xander.
  132.  
  133. Buffy glanced up then looked away solemnly.

  163. Scene 22
  164.  
  165. "Rupert," gently addressed Miss Calender after a lengthy amount of still
  166. silence.
  167.  
  168. Giles had stared at various furnishings in his living room and they had all
  169. gave him the same reply. Currently the endless expanse that was the sky
  170. outside his window gave his eyes a place to hide from his confusion.
  171.  
  172. He spoke while still staring, "You gave me quite a start this morning. When
  173. everything was still foggy you appeared at my front door. I think I've been in
  174. shock all day. But, now I'm beginning to become aware."
  175.  
  176. "I can't believe I'm here either. It's hard for me to feel like I'm anywhere
  177. after having been...," Miss Calender's sentence trailed off.
  178.  
  179. "You know even though we're in the same room I don't feel like we're together
  180. again," she added.
  181.  
  182. "Perhaps...perhaps it's because we haven't shared more than a few words,"
  183. Giles said while still emotionally drained.
  184.  
  185. Sparsely punctuated quiet followed for a few more moments.
  186.  
  187. "I keep getting this tugging sensation that you're supposed to come with me
  188. somewhere," commented Miss Calender.
  189.  
  190. Finally Giles broke from his trance and ran his hands through his unkempt
  191. hair.
  192.  
  193. "You're not real. You're not real," He said in animated contrast to his former
  194. state of mind.
  195.  
  196. "What are you saying, Rupert?" inquired a befuddled Jenny Calender.
  197.  
  198. "All this time I've felt it. It's made me sick to me stomach to know deep down
  199. in my heart that you're not here in front of me even as I want to believe you
  200. are," Giles said with a quick winded pace.
  201.  
  202. "Look at me," Jenny said as she closed quarters with Giles.
  203.  
  204. "I'm right here. Look at me with your own eyes. Don't you hear my voice? I'm
  205. right in front of you," she said in desperate attempt to convince the
  206. unbelieving.
  207.  
  208. Giles scrunched his face up as tight as he could make it. Even with his eyes
  209. closed he could still see her. It pained him as reality finally set in.
  210.  
  211. "Rupert! Rupert!" called out Jenny as she gripped him by the arms.
  212.  
  213. Giles' turned beet red with anguish and reached toward the coffee table. As
  214. the unwanted weapon seated itself into his hand he turned his head as far away
  215. as he could and thrusted the dagger in front of him. 
  216.  
  217. Quickly what was Miss Calender degraded to its actual state of decay and fell
  218. to the floor. No cry of pain was let out or any struggle for survival endured.
  219. That did little to comfort Giles however. All that was left for him to do was
  220. to bury his head in his own arms and let out bursts of weeping through his
  221. choked face. 
  222.  
  223. This perpetual agony went undisturbed for a period of time that was too great
  224. to measure in minutes. Eventually a wary Xander peered through the unlocked
  225. front door. He surveyed the scene inside with bittersweet relief.
  226.  
  227. "What's going on?" whispered Cordelia from behind him.
  228.  
  229. Xander tried to think of what eloquent words he could burst in and be the hero
  230. with, but nothing came to mind. He finally decided to let Giles be and turned
  231. back to Cordelia.
  232.  
  233. "Let's go," he said quietly.

  263. Scene 23
  264.  
  265. "Damnation, there goes a fine piece of craftsmanship," profaned Abel in his
  266. underground lair. 
  267.  
  268. "I ought to get an award for animating a zombie that lifelike," he said with a
  269. scratch to his head. 
  270.  
  271. Abel felt rather dizzy after the concentration that his creation required was
  272. suddenly relieved. The arranging of documents on his desk brought him little
  273. comfort and he opted for a little stroll to reassemble his mind. 
  274.  
  275. Abel traveled through the dark, twisting halls of the dungeon he called home.
  276. He had regained lucidity by the time he passed in front of his companion's
  277. study.
  278.  
  279. "I wonder what he is working on," Abel thought aloud curiously. He entered
  280. undaunted and began looking through the materials assembled on his former
  281. tutor's desk. The more he saw the more anger showed in his demeanor.
  282.  
  283. "That traitorous bastard," Abel pronounced. Just as he did, the one who was
  284. once his teacher entered. He saw Abel hovering over his desk and a look of
  285. sheer terror came over a normally unexpressive face.
  286.  
  287. "I can explain," he said as he dropped the items he had fetched.
  288.  
  289. "That's alright, I'll explain for you," Abel offered.
  290.  
  291. He continued, "You are going to attempt to undo my seal on the Gateway so you
  292. can hand me over, you coward!"
  293.  
  294. The older necromancer was at a loss for words. He had been caught red handed
  295. and could do nothing as he stared his own destruction in the face.
  296.  
  297. "Please, don't kill me," he pleaded.
  298.  
  299. Abel let out a wicked laugh.
  300.  
  301. "You're going to have to do a damn sight better than that. Get down on your
  302. knees and beg like the dog you are," Abel replied. His elder dropped to his
  303. knees readily.
  304.  
  305. "Please, forgive me!" he begged.
  306.  
  307. Abel leaned down close to his mentor's head with a quite evil face.
  308.  
  309. "You're forgiven," he whispered.
  310.  
  311. A look of surprise was given in return. It quickly became a look of horror,
  312. however, as a flood of hellfire screamed its way through the kneeling torso
  313. beneath this unusually expressive head. The old necromancer's body convulsed
  314. in throws of torment. Abel's teeth clenched as he summoned forth more and more
  315. hellfire, engulfing his betrayer to a fiery death.

  345. Scene 24
  346.  
  347. The going was just as violent on the surface of Sunnydale as underneath it.
  348. Buffy was currently exercising her faculties as the Slayer on a vampire that
  349. she happened upon in an darkened alley. The fight was near its conclusion as
  350. she got the upper hand.
  351.  
  352. "Before you get dusted let me ask you a question," said Buffy through
  353. accelerated breaths. 
  354.  
  355. A second wind by the vampire was broken by a timely blow from Buffy. She
  356. followed through with a kick to her downed opponent that made way for her to
  357. straddle her victim with her hand at his throat and a stake hovered over his
  358. heart.
  359.  
  360. "Tell me where the vampire Abel created is," demanded Buffy.
  361.  
  362. "Or you'll what, stake me?" snarled back the vampire.
  363.  
  364. "Exactly," answered Buffy.
  365.  
  366. "So, if I told you then I wouldn't get staked?" questioned the vampire.
  367.  
  368. Buffy answered only with a furrowed brow.
  369.  
  370. "See, I don't have an incentive here do I?" observed the vampire.
  371.  
  372. "Good point. Here's another," Buffy said as she raised the stake to strike.
  373.  
  374. "Oh, if you're looking for Puritan don't worry. He'll find you," blurted out
  375. the vampire as he glanced at something out of corner of his eye. 
  376.  
  377. Buffy looked over to see the snarling goliath of a vampire that was Puritan.
  378. She quickly thrusted the stake into the prone vampire's heart and held it in
  379. place for the annoying nuisance time it took for him to turn to ashes. With
  380. that out of the way she stood up and faced her new opponent.

  410. Scene 25
  411.  
  412. "Ugh! This chapter is about how to mutate spiders into war beasts," yelled
  413. Willow, frustrated at the content of the text she had just spent the last half
  414. hour translating.
  415.  
  416. Oz walked over calmly and turned off the computer screen Willow had been
  417. staring at for much too long.
  418.  
  419. "I think we could use a break. Want to go for a walk?" he offered.
  420.  
  421. "It's just that I'd really like to help Buffy out by making a breakthrough on
  422. this. It's almost like there's no good way to kill a necromancer or even get
  423. him out of his lair for that matter," grumbled Willow.
  424.  
  425. Oz asked, "Did you just say 'making' and 'out' in the same sentence?"
  426.  
  427. Willow thought quickly and replied, "Let's go for a walk."
  428.  
  429. Meanwhile Cordelia drove in her usual reckless manner to the distaste of her
  430. fearful passenger.
  431.  
  432. "Will you slow down already?" exclaimed Xander.
  433.  
  434. "Why? Aren't you in a hurry to get back and save Buffy's rear?" returned
  435. Cordelia.
  436.  
  437. "What's that supposed to mean?" snapped Xander.
  438.  
  439. "Well, you're so fond of it," grumbled Cordelia as she rounded a corner rather
  440. unsteadily.
  441.  
  442. "Look-" began Xander, but he was cut off.
  443.  
  444. "No, you look, as long as Buffy's the Slayer and we're saving the world every
  445. other night I'm more than content to pitch in. But, I'm not going to be
  446. ignored by someone that I used to not even want to be payed attention to. . .
  447. by. . . from. . . you know what I mean," interrupted Cordelia.
  448.  
  449. "So what are you saying? inquired Xander.
  450.  
  451. "Get over her!" shouted Cordelia.
  452.  
  453. "I can't see myself getting over her until she's forty, moved in with some
  454. hairy buckweed guy in a trailer park, and fifty pounds heftier. Even then it's
  455. a maybe," Xander's statement was softened with a boyish grin. Cordelia didn't
  456. give one in return.
  457.  
  458. Back at the outskirts of Sunnydale high Oz and Willow were being a lot
  459. friendlier in a kissing kind of way. The two seperated for a moment to
  460. continue walking the darkening, moonlit late afternoon. 
  461.  
  462. "Do you think you'll ever go to college?" inquired Willow.
  463.  
  464. "I don't know. When I think of college I think big classes, brick fissades,
  465. and professors with red pens in their front shirt pockets. It's just not me,"
  466. explained Oz.
  467.  
  468. "Well, at least that means we can spend more time together in the mean time,"
  469. said Willow, looking on the bright side.
  470.  
  471. "In the mean time? So that means after the year is over you'll be shipping out
  472. to some big name university?" asked Oz.
  473.  
  474. "We'll it's always kind of been a given in my family for Willow Rosenburg to
  475. get a scholarship and become a world famous scientist. You know how
  476. expectations go," she answered.
  477.  
  478. "If that's what you want then when that time comes we'll work something out,"
  479. said Oz with a ever so slight smile.
  480.  
  481. The two closed slowly for another kiss.
  482.  
  483. "Hey, they're over here," Cordelia yelled back over her shoulder. 
  484.  
  485. Willow let out a sigh.
  486.  
  487. "Cordelia," she whispered under her breath, each sylable had it's own unique
  488. grumble.
  489.  
  490. Oz and Willow waited patiently for their friends to catch up with them. As
  491. they stood happy just to be in each other's company they shared what would be
  492. their final glance. A pale figure startlingly emerged from a nearby bush and
  493. casually put his arms around the two sweethearts like a buddy.
  494.  
  495. "What's up?" Abel asked. He followed his feigned plesantry with an incantation
  496. that caused him and his companions to disappear in a shriek of hellflame.
  497.  
  498. Cordelia let out a scream that brought Xander running.
  499.  
  500. "What happend?" Xander questioned excitedly.
  501.  
  502. "I don't know! One moment they were just standing there the next second
  503. someone turned up the reverb and they were gone," Cordelia said through a
  504. filter of panic.

  536. Buffy's blows came quick and furious upon Puritan's chest. It did little to
  537. phase him however. What Puritan lacked in grace he made up doubly in brawn.
  538. The Slayer eventually drew back and reconsidered her technique.

  540. Noticing Puritan's lack of defensive effort Buffy decided to go for the kill
  541. early on and drew a handy stake. With skillful aim the weapon found its mark
  542. squarely in the behemoth's chest. Only a slight stagger was given in
  543. awknowedgement of this attack. Puritan pulled the stake out of his chest and
  544. tossed it aside like a splinter.
  545.  
  546. "I don't slay easy," announced Puritan with a big, dark voice. He followed up
  547. his statement with a crude flailing attack that landed on the top of Buffy's
  548. head. She met the ground with due haste and struggled to remain concious.
  549.  
  550. Buffy crawled while still on her back to the inner recesses of the alleyway to
  551. recuperate. Her attacker followed stomping and with fangs exposed. She wasn't
  552. about to be beat by this brute. As he came within range she tripped him
  553. backwards in a sweeping motion. Puritan fell upon his backside with a
  554. resounding crash while Buffy jumped back to her feet.
  555.  
  556. "It's true what they say. The bigger they are, the harder they fall," said
  557. Buffy trying to stay composed.
  558.  
  559. Puritan wasn't exactly the most agile vampire and was having a hard time
  560. regaining standing posture. By the time he balanced on his two big feet a kick
  561. from behind was delivered by the Slayer and he fell flat on his face. Buffy
  562. took the opportunity to plunge another of her stakes into her victim's back.
  563.  
  564. This time Puritan had a hard time reaching the firmly lodged stake. His burly
  565. arms couldn't quite find the intrusive object in his back. As seconds flew by
  566. Buffy could see the effects of the more endured staking. Smoke and a pungent
  567. odor rose from the vampire's wound as he writhed on the ground. Finally he
  568. managed to pluck this stake from his back.
  569.  
  570. Buffy didn't let up and pounced yet again when Puritan rose to his hands and
  571. knees. Her hand upon his forced the stake into his chest before he could
  572. dispose of it. This time she made sure to keep her opponent from removing the
  573. weapon from his torso. With a vice on the stake and a knee in the small of her
  574. victim's back Buffy held fast for a period time that was much too long for her
  575. liking. Puritan attempted to break free with all of his diminished strength
  576. only to grow gradually weaker. 
  577.  
  578. Puritan met his fate slowly. With a growl he began to turn to ashes. More and
  579. more dead vampire matter littered the ground until finally his full
  580. disintegration brought yet another victory to the Slayer.
  581.  
  582. Buffy let go of the breath she had taken shortly before plunging the last
  583. stake into Puritan. 
  584.  
  585. "Third time's a charm," she said to herself.
  586.
