  44. #21 Return and Remembrance

  47.     Peering through the porthole glass from the outside, Xander saw
  48. the orb of Thesula illuminate and disappear.  Hesitantly, he entered the
  49. tense atmosphere of the library, where their eyes rose and fell at the
  50. noise of the door closing behind him.  So the deed was doneàthe spell
  51. cast, but whether it worked or notàdespite the cool glowing orb thingàwas
  52. another matter entirely of itself.  
  53.  
  54.     He wondered what it was going to be like with Angel no longer
  55. Angelusàas he saw it, even with the soul encumbered him, he was still a
  56. walking, talking time bomb.  He hadn't wanted this and he had spoke
  57. adamantly about it, but he had given in eventually and there wasn't
  58. anyway his mind and reason would have been transferred to them.  Xander
  59. disliked Angel and knew that that feeling would continue throughout,
  60. despite anything that might occur in between.  
  61.  
  62.     Buffy took Xander's hand when he stood beside her and she glanced
  63. at Giles, "So, what are we going to do?  Just wait?"
  64.  
  65.     "Well, a flaw in our plan is that we haven't the slightest idea
  66. where, he might - " Giles began as they heard the door open and close.
  67.  
  68.     All eyes rose, again, to a figure at the door, but this time, it
  69. was a while before they strayed awayàif at all.
  70.  
  71.     "Angel," Xander heard Buffy's voice say in a hush whisper as she
  72. let go of his hand and stood up, "Is it really you?"
  73.  
  74.     The figure clad in black backed away slightly as she approached
  75. him but stationed his ground when she was a few feet away from him,
  76. "BuffyàI feel reallyàreally strangeàwhat happened?"
  77.  
  78.     "You mean you don't remember?" she said as her forehead wrinkled
  79. in thought.
  80.  
  81.     "N-not reallyàsort ofàI remember feeling pain and then turning
  82. back toàoh, God, and thenà" Angel struggled with the memories that were
  83. coming into light in his shadowed mind and he fell to his knees as they
  84. gripped him with their ugliness and their evil.
  85.  
  86.     Buffy knelt down beside him, "It wasn't your faultàit wasn't
  87. youàit was that demon that took overàand it was my fault that that
  88. happened."
  89.  
  90.     He looked up at her and grasped her shoulders so that as he
  91. stood, she stood too, "Noàit wasn't your faultàit could never be your
  92. fault.  Don't say that."
  93.  
  94.     "But AngelàIà" she tried, but he held her close.
  95.  
  96.     "I love youà"
  97.  
  98.     Xander swallowed hard and he felt his heart beat accelerate in
  99. wonderment of what she might say.  He knew she loved Angel, but in a
  100. different manner, she had told him that much.  He trusted heràhe believed
  101. herà
  102.  
  103.     Buffy was taken into the magic of his eyes and replied, "I love
  104. you, tooà"
  105.  
  106.     àBut that was until he heard the tone of her voice.  His fingers
  107. dug into the wood of the table he gripped as her words ripped through him
  108. like a stake in the heartàand echoed in his mind in the remembrance of
  109. words that were once hisà 
  110.

  140.     "Hey," I said as I walked into the library and saw Xander sitting
  141. beside a glowing lamp, apparently waiting for us.
  142.  
  143.     He looked up and mustered a smileàif you can call it that, "Hey,
  144. back from patrolling already?"
  145.  
  146.     "Pretty muchàyeah," I said as I placed my bag full of crosses,
  147. holy water and stakes on the table - now that's weirdànever would I ever
  148. even owning a bag full of vampire-related stuff, let alone having it.
  149.  
  150.     "Soàvampire content?" he questioned as he stood up with a sigh.
  151.  
  152.     "Oneàthat's an upside since we bagged three the night before, but
  153. what makes it an even bigger upside, we saw a really cool glow worm," I
  154. replied.
  155.  
  156.     "Must have been fascinating, Oz," he said as he walked passed me,
  157. "I'll see if Giles and Willow need help."
  158.  
  159.     "Uhàyeahàsure," I said as he left without another word and I
  160. looked around me, "I'll just keep an eye on the - the books."
  161.  
  162.     I'm not sure what Xander has against meàI get the feeling he
  163. thinks I'm violating on Willow's innocence.  I'm far from violationàall
  164. I've done is kiss heràliked it extremely, but all the same, that's as far
  165. as we've gone.  Still, I'm getting more of his cold shoulder than I did
  166. before, but I think I know the answer to that one.  He isn't the type of
  167. guy to disregard or forget that I was the one that was suppose to get
  168. Giles to safety, but I couldn't and so Spike and Druscilla caught him. 
  169. I'm surprised that everyone - well, except for Xander - hasn't called me
  170. on it in anyway, but most of all, I'm surprised at Gilesàhe hasn't said a
  171. word. 
  172.  
  173.     But just because they haven't said anything, doesn't exactly mean
  174. they haven't thought it.  Although everything's okay between Willow and
  175. me, once in awhile, when Buffy or Giles is especially around, I catch her
  176. giving me these looks.  I'm not sure what to read out of them, were they
  177. of disappointmentàsadnessàwhat if thoughtsà  I don't think I'll ever
  178. knowàany of the looks they give me from time to time. 
  179.  
  180.     If only I had paid more attention to the surrounding situation
  181. and maybe then he would have been behind me as he was supposed to have
  182. been.  I was so sure that he had been so the whole timeàbut he wasn't. 
  183. Somehow, we lost him in the winding corridors, and it had been my job to
  184. keep an eye on him since he had a pretty nasty blow to the head only a
  185. few minutes earlier.  
  186.  
  187.     I could still hear Buffy's voice calling back to me, "Oz, look
  188. after Gilesàmake sure he gets out okay."  These words echo to me at the
  189. strangest timesàwaking me in the black of the night to glimpse into her
  190. world, sitting in front of the television set, it even catches me in the
  191. midst of playing a song.  It's like a shadow that hangs over me and then
  192. drapes over my head whenever it pleases to make me remember pain that I
  193. try to forgetàto make me feel the pain that I can't forget if I tried.  I
  194. hadn't executed that singular request and because of my failure to do so,
  195. Giles got caught, and because he got caught we had to come a second time
  196. around, and although we got him back, Buffy lost her sight.  
  197.  
  198.     How was it that I ended up leaving him in a dank corridor of the
  199. mansion to be taken by those innate evil cretins where God only knows
  200. what happened to him in there?  He has yet to tell us about his
  201. experience, and I'm not sure he will.  He's a quiet and more complex than
  202. I think any of us can believe, and even if he did tell us what occurred,
  203. I'm not sure if I could stomach the explanation knowing that I caused it.
  204.  I think I'd feel a lot like I do nowàseeing Buffy blind, and knowing
  205. that if Fate didn't have such twists of power, she could see.
  206.  
  207.     The first day I saw her with her blank stare was in the hospital
  208. and it made a pretty harsh impression for me.  The doctors were having
  209. their little conferences about her eyes and they hadn't noticed that I
  210. had crept inàjust to see her.  She was really groggyàprobably getting out
  211. of her sedative when I saw her open her eyes.  It surprised me to see
  212. them lacking that twinkle that Willow and I had dubbed "Slayer Shine." 
  213. The varying gleam I had come to know in the last few monthsàwas gone. 
  214. All that was left were lackluster eyes that could only reflect the images
  215. of the world around heràthe world she couldn't see.  Eyes that could no
  216. longer tell us of the Buffy we once knew, and I wonder, if because of me,
  217. that Buffy no longer exists.

  240. Costello are both dead, maybe their estates. So I'll just say it wasn't
  241. my idea. I'm not making any money from this.
  242. Summary: You guys know what it's like. You get a silly idea and just
  243. have to act on it. Well I acted and I thought I would share it. I think
  244. you'll enjoy this one.
  245.    Or if you want to just think of this as Xander and Willow rehearsing
  246. for next years talentless show. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  263. Xander:  Then I=92m not telling. Well did anything happen last night?

  265. Willow:  Yes it did. Buffy and I were attacked by a whole bunch of
  266. Nasties.

  268. Xander: Really. Do you know their names?

  270. Willow: Of the nasties? Of course I do. Remember I=92m the one who looks
  271. stuff up.

  273. Xander:  Great then tell me the names of the vampires that attacked
  274. Buffy.

  501. Xander:  So if I attack the first vampire, somebody gonna be dead. Now
