this as a refference to Darla to explain Buffy's state of mind at the tim=

are not mine, they are the creations of the God of all Buffdom, Joss Whed=

from Surprise and Innocence. I am not making any money from this, and no =

Slayer be Slain ~ Fourth Mailing
The lights in the library burned brightly as the vampires slowly
prowled through the underbrush below the windows. Silently, they peeked
inside, raising their eyebrows as it seemed all their friends were
gathered, waiting for them.
Angel lay his hand upon Buffy's back as he directed her towards
the school doors. "We dine well tonight, love," he whispered, softly.
"Only the watcher interests me. The others are just a bonus."
"And the gypsy?"
"Yours to do with as you please. Afterwards, we share in the
heart of the watcher."
He smiled coldly, holding the door open for her. Together they
shifted into their vampirical forms, never hesitating as they turned
towards the library.
They stepped through the swinging doors of the library to find the
tables and chairs that had only minutes before held their friends, now
vacated. Both vampires frowned. The lights suddenly were extinguished,
the doors slamming shut behind them, bolted from the outside by Willow,
who, with her friends, stood peering in through the window. A soft word
was spoken, and long candles ignited in every corner, on every table,
and on either side of the door. The pale, flickering light illuminated
the silver crosses now sealing the windows and doors against the
vampires' escape. Buffy and Angel found themselves surrounded not by
their friends, but by thirteen ancient, withered strangers.
Each of the strangers held before them a crucifix, a stake, and a
vile of holy water which hung by chains around their necks. They were
standing behind ancient scrolls supported before them by black metal
stands Giles had obviously borrowed from the music room. Looking around
in sudden concern, both vampires caught sight of Giles and Ms. Calendar
illuminated by candle light on the second story of the building.
Buffy bit the bottom of her lip as she noticed that she and Angel
were standing amidst a pentagram. The edges were built with wood sealed
to the library ground, the center drawn with chalk into the marble
flooring. Snarling she quickly cleared the pentagram siding, pulling
the nearest person into her grasp. She bared her fangs, preparing to
sink them into the neck of her victim, barely registering the movement
of the gypsy's hand. A biting pain tore through her shoulder as the man
drove the crucifix he wore into her flesh. She stepped back in shock,
flinging the elder out of her grasp, sending him reeling into a marble
stand. The other elders approached her quickly, driving her to her
knees with the power of their crucifixes.
She glared up at a gypsy standing before her, numbing her mind to
the pain of the crucifix still embedded in her shoulder. Buffy darted
her arms out quickly, and pulled the woman to the floor. Something
sharp penetrated the vampire's back, causing her to let the gypsy free
as she felt the wound for a description. A wooden stake protruded from
her flesh, and with a frown she rose her eyes to see Giles holding a
crossbow. Her frown deepened as she thought for a moment, then a
smile crossed her face as she suddenly as she pulled the stake from her =
body. Darla's words came easily to Buffy's lips.
"Close, Giles, but no heart." The watcher moved towards the
stairs, trying to gain a better vantage point from which he hoped to
immobilize the girl. With a sharp flick of her wrist, Buffy sent the
stake reeling through the air to enter Giles' leg. He dropped to the
ground with a groan. "Bad dog," she scowled, "Stay!"
A glance assured her that Giles was not going anywhere too
quickly, so she returned to her stalking of the gypsies. With trembling
hands the elders began shaking the viles of holy water in her direction.
Buffy cried out as her flesh burned from droplets sprayed upon
her, turning in a circle as she tried to brush off the offending liquid, =
retreating slowly back into the pentagram. Angel quickly pulled the
crucifix from her shoulder, burning his hand, but hardly noticing as he
made sure Buffy's wound began to heal.
The gypsy from whom Buffy had tried to feed climbed groggily to
his feet, reaching for a vase that rested atop the stand he had hit.
With a quick flash of his arm, he sent the vase crashing to the floor,
spilling it's liquid contents to the ground outside the pentagram.
The twelve other elders reached for additional vases placed around
the library, and one by one they, too, covered the ground in the clear
liquid from within.
Angel stepped forward, angrily crossing the boundaries of the
pentagram, stopping suddenly as his foot came in contact with the liquid
from the vases. His flesh began smoke, and a searing pain rose up
through his leg. He hissed, stepping back quickly, at last realizing
what the gypsies had done. The liquid was nothing more than water to a
mortal, but to a vampire it was worse than even acid. The water had
recently been sanctified by a priest, making it impossible for the
vampires to step outside of the pentagram. Angel snarled.
"You think you can keep us here, Watcher? Even holy water will
not keep us from ripping your heart from your chest. All you've done is
slow us down. We will destroy you, and now the gypsies, as well." His
eyes tracked to Ms. Calendar, "All the gypsies."
Giles shook his head, grimacing in pain, "No, Angelus. You will
not drink from these people. I do believe you are already familiar with
the spiritual abilities of the Caulderosh tribe."
Buffy rose to stand beside Angel and laughed. "I'll call your
bluff, Giles. Those spells have been lost for almost a century; gypsy-
Jenny there told us so herself."
Ms. Calendar shook her head. "No. The possibility of the curse
my people placed on Angel breaking was too great. One elder in each
generation has been given the power to once again cast that ancient
spell. The need to protect each of these elders was far too great to
risk anyone but the chosen one to know of its continuing existence."
She paused, her eyes softening. "I didn't know until I called home,
Buffy. I swear, if I had I would have helped when the curse first broke."
Buffy scowled, "Too little, too late, Jenny." She grinned,
"You're gonna regret taking us on for the rest of your life. All ten
minutes of it!" She turned to Angel, "Let's do her last, so she can see
what came of her treachery."
Ms. Calendar's face grew sad. "One day I hope you both will
forgive me for all of this. You were once my friends, I hope you will
be again." Her hand rested on Giles' shoulder, "For now, we're enemies. =
My people will not abandon one of their daughters; you can't win."

Slayer Be Slain ~ Fifth Mailing ~ Conclusion
The gypsies began chanting the words from the scrolls in low
voices, and a slow pain spread throughout the bodies of both vampires.
The ancient words the strangers were speaking were in an entirely
different language and made no sense in the vampires minds, but affected
them in ways Buffy and Angel hardly understood. Buffy looked at Angel
uncertainly as she suddenly doubled over in agony. She cried out as she
dropped to the floor. Buffy's right hand blindly stretched out for
Angel's comfort.
Angel growled fiercely, fighting his own pain to take her hand and
gather her into his arms. He glared at Giles as he held Buffy,
helpless, yet again, to stop the workings of the curse. "I won't forget
this, Watcher!"
Without warning, both Buffy and Angel were forced into their human
forms, and as the gypsies' voices strengthened, they both slowly lost
consciousness. Giles sighed sadly, "I'm counting on that, my friends."
Hours later, when the candles had burned low in their holders, and
neither vampire had moved from their unconscious states, the gypsies
voices finally came to a rest.
The oldest gypsy, an ancient woman with a deeply tanned, wrinkled,
withered face, and long white hair flowing down past the folds in her
colourful skirts turned to face Ms. Calendar, who was supporting the
wounded Giles as they decended the stairs. "It is done, Janna. Their
souls are restored."
Ms. Calendar nodded, "Thank you, grandmother."
Slowly, the tired elders gathered together their scrolls and filed
out of the library, at last allowing back inside Xander, Willow,
Cordelia and Oz. All four looked to the still silent forms of their
friends uncertainly, and then back to Giles.
The watcher nodded, "Right, then. Oz, if you would be so kind as
to bring around the van, I propose we return Buffy and Angel to Angel's
loft before the rise of the sun."
Willow swallowed, the remnants of fear still playing over her
features. "Will they.. I mean, are they...?"
Giles sighed, "When they awaken they will be as we knew them
before the curse broke." His eyes settled on the slayer and his
expression darkened. "For the most part."
As they moved to gather their friends, they found it difficult to
separate their bodies. The fingers of Angel's and Buffy's right hands
were intertwined so tightly that nothing the watcher or the kids could
do would pull them apart. Giving up finally, they carried the vampires
to the van together and gently their unconscious forms were lain out
side by side on the floor.
Oz drove quickly down the road, over the familiar streets to
Angel's old loft. Though the trip was short, the sun was rapidly
rising; the need to get Buffy and Angel back into the dark was great.
Though their souls were restored, they were still vampires and the light
of the sun was deadly.
The loft was bare as they carried the still unconscious vampires
inside. Angel had moved everything he owned to the warehouse. Buffy
and Angel would have to rebuild everything, however material things,
easy to replace, would be the least of their worries.
The humans left them alone in that loft, laying in each others
arms, their fingers still entwined. Giles hit the switch on the wall as
he closed the door on his way outside, allowing Jenny to lead him back
to the van. The artificial light of the apartment blinked out, it's
last rays illuminating the claddagh rings the vampires still wore. In
the darkness, both hearts were turned towards the wearer.
THE END!
