  33. TITLE: The Watcher

  36. SUMMARY: This takes place four years later while the Buffy gang is attending
  37. Montague University near Sunnydale. AngelÆs soul has been permanently
  38. restored, and he is 100% human. Jenny Calendar is still alive. Buffy will be
  39. getting a new Watcher. 
  40. DISTRIBUTION: Ask me first.
  41. DISCLAIMER: I own none of the characters from or the movie or show Buffy the
  42. Vampire Slayer. They were created by Joss Wheden and are owned by 20th Century
  43. Fox, Sandollar Television, Mutant Enemy, etc. No infringement intended.

  48.     Buffy lay awake, thinking, in AngelÆs arms at 5:30 in the morning. Everything
  49. had happened so fast: graduation from high school, deciding to go to Montague
  50. University about fifteen minutes from Sunnydale, moving into their rented
  51. house with Willow, Cordelia, Xander, Oz, and Angel, and finishing up her
  52. Junior year of college. 
  53. Willow had almost gone of to Columbia, but she thought it more important to
  54. help Buffy save the world from vampires than go to an ivy-league school and
  55. move on with her life. For some reason, Buffy felt like it wasnÆt her choice;
  56. it was her destiny to stay near Willow.
  57. Realizing how important it was for all of them to stay together, she urged the
  58. others to rent out a house close to the campus. Cordelia and Willow shared a
  59. room, as did Xander and Oz. Buffy got her own room, and Angel often stayed
  60. with her. 
  61.     Giles, on the other hand, did not live with the kids. He had become a
  62. librarian at Montague but stayed in his house in Sunnydale. He visited the
  63. house often, and there was always a room made up for him, but he mostly stayed
  64. at home since Jenny Calendar, his new wife, was pregnant.
  65.     Everything, Buffy knew, would change soon. Once the Watcher became a parent,
  66. they are relieved of their duty. That day was bound to come soon, for Jenny
  67. was due in less than a month. //What would the new one be like?// thought
  68. Buffy. //Will he/she accept Angel as my boyfriend? Will Giles leave my life
  69. forever?// She shuttered at the thought. She and Giles had become so close
  70. over the years. He was like the father she never saw. //But IÆm going to have
  71. to let go, right? ItÆs not fair to Giles. He deserves his own life now,
  72. doesnÆt he? Just like someday, when Angel and I have a child, IÆll deserve my
  73. life back.//
  74.     She got out of bed, put on her robe, and walked out onto the balcony outside
  75. her window. From there she saw the ocean waves crash against the shore.
  76.     "WhatÆs wrong?" Angel asked as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
  77.     She sighed. "I miss Giles already even though heÆs not yet gone. IÆm worried
  78. about my new Watcher. I, I, I feel like somethingÆs coming, but I donÆt know
  79. what."
  80.     "Something bad?"
  81.     "IÆm not sure. I think it has to do with the changing of Watchers, though." 
  82.     "Why donÆt you give Giles a call?"
  83.     "Because, heÆs right over there." She pointed towards GilesÆs small car
  84. parking in the driveway. 
  85.     They quickly woke the rest of the group and met Giles in the living room.
  86. They could tell by his face that this news was causing him bewilderment.
  87.     "Um, I, I, I have some very interesting news for you, Buffy. I have tracked
  88. down your, your knew Watcher, and the name was a surprise, even for me. ItÆs
  89. rather interesting-"
  90.     "Giles," Buffy cut him off, "who is it?"
  91.     "I, I think you all better sit down." The group did as told. "From what I
  92. have concluded, the next Watcher in line is Willow Rosenberg."

  146. Hope managed to muster the strength to crawl over to Buffy.  She reached 
  147. out and grasped her hand, squeezing gently.  Sobs racked her body.  ôIÆm 
  148. sorry,ö she cried.  ôIÆm so sorry.ö  Her body grew numb till she 
  149. couldnÆt feel herself.  She pulled BuffyÆs body close to her and weeped, 
  150. her tears falling on the small pale face.  ôOh God, I let you die,ö she 
  151. whispered.  ôIÆm so sorry,ö she repeated, feeling more anguish than she 
  152. had ever felt before. 
  153.  
  154. Giles, still in shock, slowly walked over to Hope, taking Buffy from her 
  155. arms.  Carrying his Slayer to the edge of the cavern by the door, he 
  156. held her in his arms.  
  157.  
  158. Joyce screamed out in grief.  ôNNOOOOOOOO!!!ö  She sobbed, agony filling 
  159. her aching heart.  She tugged at the chains that restricted her from her 
  160. daughter, tearing her flesh till she was bleeding.  The pain that ripped 
  161. through her soul was like her insides were being torn out of her body.  
  162. Bile clogged her throat as she leaned over and regurgitated onto the 
  163. floor beside her.  A pain more intense than a thousand knives stung at 
  164. her, and she withered against the wall, trying to forget the horrendous 
  165. death of her only daughter.  
  166.  
  167. Xander watched her and scurried to her, releasing her from the binding 
  168. irons.   She ran to Buffy and snatched her daughter from Giles arms.  
  169. Sobbing uncontrollably, she rocked back and forth, moaning.  
  170.  
  171. Hope stood up, no longer crying.  She wiped the tears from her eyes and 
  172. stared at Angel.  The hatred that swarmed through her flesh was a 
  173. vicious loathing that erupted from the depths of her soul.  A fierce, 
  174. violent rage pumped through her veins.  Her tears stopped, and the 
  175. mournful look in her eyes was replaced by a furious one.  
  176.  
  177. Her voice, hoarse and raspy, spoke quietly to the vampire that stood 
  178. before her.  ôYou will die.ö  Her chest heaved and she stood with a 
  179. vengeance that could rival no other.  Hope punched him hard to the face 
  180. with one hand, then the other, repeatedly till her knuckles bled, but 
  181. she felt no pain.  Grabbing his hair, she slammed his head into the 
  182. wall.  The strong rock crumbled beneath the blow.  She spun with 
  183. increased momentum and gave him a roundhouse kick to the face.  She spun 
  184. again, and kicked him in the stomach.  He stumbled back, and she pulled 
  185. out a small bottle of holy water out of her pocket.  She splashed it on 
  186. his chest.  Angel screamed from the fierce burning of his skin.  She 
  187. punched him three times in the stomach, and he staggered back in pain.  
  188. Running at him, she jumped up and kicked him in the neck, sending him 
  189. flying backwards into the pond.  Angel staggered out of the water and 
  190. looked at her.  She tried to punch him, but he grabbed her arm in mid 
  191. swing and flipped her over onto the ground.  Hope let out a painful 
  192. breath.  Angel reached down for her, but Hope kicked up with both legs 
  193. into AngelÆs face and made him fall backward onto the floor.  They both 
  194. scramble to their feet again.  Hope did a roundhouse kick to AngelÆs 
  195. face.  He fell again, but hopped right back to his feet.  
  196.  
  197. Angel tried to advance toward Hope again, but stopped in mid stride.  
  198. Her necklace glowed brighter than ever and he knew that she was 
  199. dangerous.  HopeÆs power matched his own.  How, he didnÆt know, but he 
  200. did know that this wasnÆt going to be an easy fight.  
  201.  
  202. Hope stared into his cold, emotionless eyes.  She was becoming 
  203. increasingly strong, and with her strength she was more brutal.  She 
  204. noticed him staring at her necklace, and saw itÆs bright glow.  It 
  205. illuminated the Lair.  < My necklace >  
  206.  
  207. < Wait a minute....thatÆs it! >  At that moment Hope realized what she 
  208. needed to save Angel.  Her necklace.  It was the key to his greatest 
  209. wish.  < What do I do? >  She closed her eyes and grabbed the bright 
  210. pendant, focusing on itÆs energy.  A gust of wind entered the silent 
  211. lair, blowing out some of the candles.  A soothing voice came into her 
  212. head.  *Put it on him*.
  213.  
  214. < Wait, he doesnÆt deserve to live.  I canÆt save him >  She thought 
  215. angrily, looking at the body of her friend.  < No.  I have to.  I have 
  216. to save him >  Remembering the words of her parents, she make the 
  217. hardest decision in her life.  
  218.  
  219. She opened her eyes.  He was staring at her her.  < I have to save him.  
  220. I have to sacrifice my own life for his >
  221.  
  222. Hope grabbed the pendant, feeling itÆs warm vibes.  Knowing what she had 
  223. to do, she unclasped it and pulled it off her neck.  Giles watched her 
  224. and his heart thudded.  ôHope, NO!ö He yelled, but it was too late.  He 
  225. watched in fear and terror, not wanting to lose her too. 
  226.  
  227. She ran and flipped over Angel, landing directly behind him.  She jumped 
  228. on his back, and pulled the necklace around his neck, and clasped it.  
  229. He reached around and pushed her off of him.  Hope felt her body grow 
  230. incredibly weak, and tried to run over to Giles, but collapsed in mid 
  231. stride.  Pain engulfed her, and she felt herself beginning to lose her 
  232. life. She tried to crawl to him, but her body lacked the energy.  Xander 
  233. dashed to her and grabbed Hope, pulling her away from the raging 
  234. vampire.  
  235.  
  236. Angel screamed in anger.  His voice was shattering, and he clutched the 
  237. necklace, trying to pull it off his neck.  Smoke came from his hands as 
  238. it burned into his hands.  The demon within him was struggling with his 
  239. soul.  AngelÆs body flew across the room and slammed into a rock wall.  
  240. He fell to the ground in convulsions.  Hope, Giles, and Xander watched 
  241. in horror as Angel withered in pain.  All of a sudden, a ghastly scream 
  242. erupted from his body. In all their life they had never heard anything 
  243. like itÆs terrifying sound, and they never would again.  It would stay 
  244. with them till they died.  It was the sound of pain, agony, and defeat.  
  245. The demon lost, and his soul was home.   
  246.  
  247. Silence filled the room.  Hope looked at Giles, who sat silently.  ôHeÆs 
  248. saved,ö she whispered.  ôTell my parents that I did it,ö her voice 
  249. cracked with emotion.  She reached for BuffyÆs hand and grasped it just 
  250. as she did before.  Hope squeezed her eyes shut tight and a bright 
  251. orange light illuminated between their palms.  Hope whispered, ôGive her 
  252. life,ö and squeezed harder.  The orange light filled BuffyÆs body till 
  253. she was glowing from head to toe.  Her eyes opened, and she smiled at 
  254. Giles.  ôIÆll miss you all,ö she said.
  255. ôTell Buffy I love her.ö  Her eyes filled with tears as they fluttered 
  256. shut.  The grasp she had on BuffyÆs hand weakened, and her frail body 
  257. went limp.
  258.  
  259. The tears of Joyce,  Xander, and Giles fell onto BuffyÆs face, just as 
  260. her eyelids fluttered open.  She looked at HopeÆs body, and at AngelÆs 
  261. curled up figure.  ôWhy are you crying?ö  Her hoarse voice asked, gazing 
  262. into the faces of her friends.  Three sets of eyes popped open.
  263.  
  264. ôYouÆre alive!ö  Joyce exclaimed, and hugged her.  Relief flooded her, 
  265. and her blazing pain ceased.  ôI thought I lost you.ö
  266.  
  267. Buffy leaned back and looked into her eyes.  ôWhat happened?ö  She 
  268. looked over at HopeÆs lifeless figure.  ôOh no,ö  She whispered, looking 
  269. back at her mother.  ôIs she dead?ö
  270.  
  271. Joyce choked back a sob.  ôYes, honey.  She died.ö  
  272.  
  273. BuffyÆs eyes filled with tears and she began to weep.  ôHow....how 
  274. did...ö
  275.  
  276. ôShe died giving you life,ö Giles said softly.  Buffy stared into is 
  277. aged eyes.
  278.  
  279. ôWhat?ö  She asked.  ôShe died for me?ö  Giles nodded, and Buffy turned 
  280. back and looked at the body that lay before her.  Loosening herself from 
  281. her motherÆs tight hold, she crawled over to Hope.  Taking the small 
  282. hand in hers, she kissed it gently, her tears covering her lips and 
  283. blanketing her damp face.  ôI let you down,ö she whispered.  ôI promised 
  284. you that you would make it out of here alive, but I didnÆt keep my 
  285. promise.  IÆm so sorry.ö  She held onto HopeÆs hand, mourning her body 
  286. with intense feeling of guilt.
