"Ghost of a Chance," by Ingrid
Part 11
***
It must be an earthquake, Angel thought. Everything was trembling,
and there was some kind of siren going off. He bolted up in bed
with the supposed emergency, and then relaxed again when he saw
the alarm clock, buzzing like mad, and Buffy shaking him awake. No
siren. No earthquake. Just Buffy.
Which, in this situation, could be worse.
"Come, on, Angel," youÆve got to get yourself out of bed now. The bus
will be here in ten minutes, and youÆre still wearing your PJÆs!
AngelÆs eyes popped open, and reality snapped back into place. He
was Willow for the day, and heÆd best not screw her up any more than
he had to. Just get through the day, he thought to himself reassuringly.
Buffy emerged from the closet, holding a pair of overalls and a green
and blue-striped shirt. "Here- Put these on."
Angel looked at the clothes in horror. Though he admired the hacker for
her integrity and honesty, her fashion sense was wellàdifferent.
"Angel, no time to be getting picky," Buffy cautioned, "Get a move on!"
He flew into the bathroom, and emerged moments later wearing the
rather loud outfit. "Now what?"
"This is the way we wash our face," Buffy sang.
"Oh."
"Here." Buffy was merciful, taking control with the washcloth. Then she
put paste on his tooth brush and shoved it at him. "Here. Go."
He brushed his teeth furiously, finally setting the brush down on the
bathroom counter.
"Sit on the bed," Buffy ordered, whipping out a hairbrush.
"Ow," Angel complained, as the brush caught a tangle in his long red
hair, and Buffy yanked it out.
"You know what they sayà No pain, no gain"
In seconds, Buffy had flipped the long red hair up into a clip with
teeth.
"That should do," she said, satisfied with her handiwork. "Now get your
bookbag. LetÆs go." She practically shoved Angel down the stairs. They
broke into a run as they saw the bus pull up to the corner. Severely out
of breath, they settled into a seat side by side.
"Well youÆre efficient," he commented, a slight smile playing on his
face.
"They donÆt call me the slayer for nothing," she quipped, and then a
serious expression stole across her face. "You do have the report,
right?"
Panic took hold until he pulled a small black binder from WillowÆs
bookbag.
He sighed audibly.
"Now remember what we went over. Avoid any potential non-Willow-like
behavior. Check in at the library at lunch. Make sure to eat, but beware
of
the meatloaf, and I cannot emphasize that enough. ItÆs deadly. Quiz time:
WhatÆs a mole?"
Angel thought about what Willow had told him for a moment. "6.02 x 10
to the negative 23rd. Is that right?"
BuffyÆs brow wrinkled "How should I know?" She paused. "Okay, letÆs
move on. How about situational irony?"
"I think that covers the current situation," he remarked with a twitch of
his lips.
"Oh. Right," she answered distractedly, "YouÆll be okay.
Just avoidàeverything."
"Uhà IÆll try."
"Now Oz knows whatÆs going on. HeÆll help you out if youÆre not sure of
something."
"Okay, Buffy. YouÆd better relax. ItÆs just a day of school. I think I
can
handle it."
"ItÆs not that, really. IÆm just nervous. About tonight."
"Me too. But Giles said this spell was easy. DonÆt worry, Buffy. IÆll be
back
to normal tonight."
She smiled nervously. "I hope so."

"Ghost of a Chance," by Ingrid
Part 12
***
Angel made a noble attempt to fight the current of students that
plowed through the halls, but he wasnÆt making much progress. A
tall girl elbowed him on her way into the gym. HeÆd almost forgotten
about his new size. How could she stand being this low to the ground?
He had to stand on his toes to see anything now. Buffy was gone, and
he was adrift in a sea of oblivious, but brutal students.
Eventually, after a few unsuccessful trips through the halls, he managed
to find homeroom. Oh great- computer class. He didnÆt know the first
thing about computers.
He wandered into the room nervously, drifting past one terminal and
another wondering how the hell he was going to find his seat. Ms.
Calendar was no where to be found-
Ms. Calendar, he thought. Good. That meant he wouldnÆt have to answer
any questions this period. After searching through the pile of disks at
each terminal, he eventually found a disk with WillowÆs name on it. He
plopped down on one of the hard plastic chairs, exhausted already. And
the day had just begun. Ugh.
Then, as if by some comic cue, things got worse. Xander sat down on
his right.
"Hey Will. WhatÆs with the Buffy hair?"
"Xander- This is kind of hard to explain, but IÆm not Willow."
He paused, then he mocked comprehension and hit himself on the head.
"Right, you must be her evil twin, Brillo."
"No. Xander, listen to me. IÆm not Willow. IÆm Angel."
"Is there a punch-line to this joke, Willow?"
"ItÆs not a joke. Umà there was this ritual that Miss Calendar performed.
It was a way to retrieve my soul. Things kind of got mixed up, and now
IÆm
Willow, and sheÆs me."
"If I laugh, will you stop? æCause there really isnÆt anything that can
save
this joke."
Angel rolled his eyes. "IÆm serious, Xander."
Finally, realization hit. "Where is Willow," he demanded seriously,
getting
territorial.
"SheÆs staying at Ms. CalendarÆs house," Angel replied reassuringly,
"DonÆt worry, Xander. WeÆre performing the soul-switch ritual tonight.
Giles said itÆs one of the easier spells. WeÆll both be back to ourselves
tonight.
"YouÆd better," Xander threatened. Surveying him suspiciously. Then he
turned back to his computer.
Angel sighed in exasperation. This was going to be a long day.
Jenny Calendar rushed into her class just as the bell rang. She shot a
sympathetic glance at Angel as she dropped her books on the table.
"Okay, Class," she began, "Today weÆre going to work on some more
C++ coding. Take out your saved programs."
***
Angel wracked his brain for an answer. Geez. Why couldnÆt they have had
a history quiz, he asked himself, perturbed. They hadnÆt had math courses
like this when he was young. Hell, school was a joke back then!
Then it came to him. He grabbed the pen and wrote "The Heisenberg
uncertainty principal." The bell buzzed obnoxiously. Angel handed in his
test and forced his way into the library. Buffy was waiting at the table,
anxiously playing with her hair.
Angel tried to look cheerful. "Hi," he greeted, sitting down next to her.
She jumped, looking up instantly. "Oh. Hey. You okay?"
"Sure," he answered, shrugging, "IÆm managing."
"That bad?" She patted him on the shoulder.
"Yeah." He hit his head against the desk. "I never believed the stuff you
told me. It all seemed so exaggerated."
She tapped a pencil on the desk. "Butà?"
"Okay, okay. You were right."
"Even about Robby the Jello slinger?"
He covered his eyes and groaned. "DonÆt remind me."
She laughed. "ItÆs not so bad when you get used to it."
He peeked at her from behind his fingers.
"Okay, it is." She laughed. "Poor Angel. IÆd always hoped that being
a vampire, youÆd never have to know the horrors of high school. Another
one of my dreams down the drain." She looked at the clock. "Uh-oh. Time
for sixth period. ThatÆs History. DonÆt worry. IÆll shove you if you
start
snoring."
Angel rolled his eyes and picked up his bookbag. Another three periods
to go. HeÆd be really relieved after tonight. That was if he made it to
tonight.
At this rate, he didnÆt know if he would.

Angel looked down at the desk in surprise. A tiny teardrop soaked
into his book cover. He didnÆt believe it: bored to tears. HeÆd always
thought that was just an expression.
*Guess not,* he thought as another dark spot appeared on the book.
The professorÆs monotonous voice continued to drone in his ear like
an obstinate fly. He closed his eyes momentarily and exhaled slowly.
Just a few more minutesà
Something shoved him hard. Buffy, he thought.
"Miss Rosenberg?"
He turned to look at Buffy, who was anxiously gesturing at the front of
the room. Suddenly, he saw the bottom of a suit and a tie in front of the
desk. Looking up timidly, he found beady black eyes boring into his own.
"Miss Rosenberg! Do you mind telling us what you were doing with your
face on the desk?"
He looked at Buffy, who was shrugging with a pained expression on her
face. "Uhà resting my head?"
BuffyÆs features crunched up and she shook her head in dismay.
"Would you mind telling us the name of the ship that was sunk by the
British U-Boats?"
"The Lusitania," Angel answered easily. That was almost too easy.
Less than one-hundred years ago!
The history teacher seemed taken aback. "Very well, Miss Rosenberg.
Just rest your head at home next time."
Angel sank back into the chair confidently, and shot a sly glance at
Buffy.
She was watching him appreciatively, giving him a thumbs-up sign.
Then the bell rang. Angel ambled out of class smiling. He was finally
getting the hang of this, he thought, expertly guiding himself through
the maze that was Sunnydale High. He could almost stand life like this.
Then he thought of Robby the Jello-slinger. Almost.
***
Jenny placed the huge book down on the desk and looked up at Giles
anxiously.
"WeÆre gonna get this."
It was nighttime in the library, and Giles and Jenny were preparing for
the
ritual in his office. The gang was waiting in the library, chatting- or
arguing
together.
"Jenny, calm down. This isnÆt the most difficult spell youÆve performed."
"But it better be the most successful," she expressed vehemently, "I
canÆt
mess this up Rupert. I have an obligation. To Buffy. To Angel. To Willow.
If
I donÆt get this right-"
"You will," he assured her, folding one of her hands in his. Then it was
time. They proceeded out into the main floor quickly, familiar with the
ritual, having performed it twice already. Angel and Willow stepped
into the circle and held hands and Jenny began to chant.
"Lach-nah-tae," Buffy mumbled along with Jenny, the words ingrained
in her memory. The familiar fire cascaded down around the two
figures, and played like a video before the slayer. The smoke
expanded quickly, filling the room. Jenny coughed a bit, but this time,
she didnÆt pass out.
Buffy approached the circle with a mixture of apprehension and hope.
Once again, the two figures were sprawled out on the floor haphazardly.
She took both their hands and smiled. Somehow, she knew. This time,
it *had* worked.
Miss Calendar looked on pensively. Giles waited beside her, offering
his quiet support.
They awoke almost at once. Willow grabbed her hair and squealed. "IÆm
back! IÆm back!"
Her smile was contagious.
She hugged Buffy fiercely, and then even swept Angel into a bear hug.
She released him, and a pained look of sympathy rested on her face.
"I understand," she said simply, wincing as she said it.
And he knew. He nodded in appreciation. Willow was a wonderful friend,
he thought. Buffy was lucky to have her. Then his gaze returned to Buffy.
He grabbed her by the waist and pulled her to him. Over her shoulder, he
saw Jenny Calendar with a bigger grin than heÆd thought her capable of.
Even the watcher was beaming.
He had so much to tell Buffy- they had so much to work out, and he
instantly wanted her alone. There was time for that, though, he thought,
as he looked at the smiling faces around him, now that he finally had
time back.

writing a new fanfic, but I'm going to post it only after I've written
the whole thing. This should be a fun one. It takes place about 10 years
into the future, and it's a mix of the post-"passion" universe and my

what to do with Willow in 10 years. If you have any suggestions, please

PART 1 PG: Mild language
It was a beautiful day in Sunnydale. The sun was shining, the birds
were chirping, and there hadnÆt been a vampire attack in days. This
worried Rupert Giles. He knew that some kind of evil would be coming to
Sunnydale. He could sense it. The only problem was that he didnÆt know
what was going to happen, or when. He feared for Buffy, Xander, Willow,
Jenny, and even CordeliaÆs safety. If anything ever happened to them,
especially Buffy, he would never forgive himself.
Giles sat in the library, going through all his books, but he was having
no luck. He had been up all night researching. His worries had made
him unable to sleep. ôThis is hopeless,ö he sighed and put his book
down. ôI canÆt find a damn thing.ö He took a quick glance at the
clock. ô10:00 a.m.ö With his elbows propped on the table he closed his
eyes and rubbed his aching temples. Slowly the watcher opened his eyes
and glanced down at the open book. He was about to close it and give
up, but something caught his eye. He picked up his glasses and turned
on his desk lamp. ôWhat is this?ö He began reading:
ôOn the night of the first full moon in the first month of the One
thousand
nine hundred and ninety-eighth year æEl Noche de AscendeÆ will fall
over the earth , and all the vampires in the world will join together
and create
an unstoppable force killing everything in their path, taking no
mercy.ö
He stopped reading, and laughed at himself. ôWell this is almost the
same damn thing as before,ö He had the sinking feeling of defeat, but
decided to read the rest of it.
ôLeading them will be Angelus...ö
He started violently choking on the drink of water he had taken. ôDear
*cough* God *cough*.ö When he was able to compose himself, he almost
felt as if he would throw up. ôAngel? Leading the vampires?ö Giles
grabbed the book and finished reading
ôHe will be named as the new Master at midnight on the full moon for
the true Master was killed by the slayer. In a ceremony he will
become the most vicious and powerful vampire. By his side will be
his one true love, and together they
will rule the earth.ö
Giles felt his heart almost stop. ôOh God,ö he breathed and panic set
in. He looked over is shoulder at the calendar. The next full moon was
Saturday. That was only four days away. ôThis canÆt be true.ö He sat
there, trying to stay calm. He read the prophecy again and again. As
he got to the last line, fear overwhelmed him. ôBy his side will be his
one true love, and together they will rule the earth....ö his voice
trailed off. ôOh no. BUFFY!!!ö he cried out loudly. ôWhat am I going
to do? I canÆt tell her this.ö He sat in his thoughts, not knowing
what do to. Just then the silence was broken by two familiar voices.
ôSo which color looked better on me? The blue or the green?ö
ôThe blue. It brings out your highlights.ö
ôAre you sure? I mean, the green goes with most of my clothes.ö
Giles looked up to see Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenburg laughing and
talking as they strolled on over to their usual table.
ôHey Giles, whatÆs up?ö Buffy asked in her usual cheerful way. She
hopped up on the table and crossed her legs.
He just looked at her, not knowing what to say.
ôHello? Earth to Giles? Come in Giles?ö she said, waving her hand in
front of his face, trying to get his attention.
ôHuh? W-What? Oh, oh yes. Hello Buffy.ö He turned his back to her.
ôUm, is there something wrong? Are you okay? You seem kind of, well,
out of it. Like your mind is somewhere else.ö
The watcher just stood there, not knowing what to tell her. ôUh...I...I
am fine, Buffy.ö He knew that he had to tell her about he prophecy, but
he was afraid of how she would react. He thought back to when she
overheard him and Angel talking about how she would be led into hell and
the Master would kill her. She was hysterical. He didnÆt want to put
her through that pain again.
ôThere is something wrong, isnÆt there?ö Buffy could always sense
emotion. She knew that there was something terribly wrong with him.
She sensed his fear.
Giles couldnÆt look at her. ôI wonÆt lie to you. Yes, there is
something wrong.ö
ôThen tell me what it is.ö He slowly turned to face her. Her blue eyes
gazed at him intently, waiting for his answer.
He hesitated. ôW..Well, Buffy, I have come across something very
disturbing...I-I had begun to get worried on account of the lack of
vampire activity, so I consulted my books and....ö Interrupting him,
Xander Harris bolted into the library with Cordelia Chase right at his
heels. They were arguing about something.
ôExcuse me, monkey boy, but IÆm not finished with you!ö Cordelia
shouted, annoyed.
Xander spun around so quickly it caused Cordelia to run right into him.
ôOoooohhh. Is Cordy getting mad? You shouldnÆt be getting angry. It
leads to stress, and stress causes zits. You wouldnÆt want a blemish,
would you?ö Xander said, mocking her.
ôShut up!!! Maybe if you werenÆt such a complete moron, I wouldnÆt have
to get angry!ö she snarled.
ôGod, Cordelia. What is your freaking problem?!ö
ôMy freaking problem is you!!!
ôWhy are you like this? Every day you drag me into that closed to do
God knows what, then you yell at me. Just admit it. You know you want
me....ö Cordelia sharply elbowed him and Xander stopped talking and
looked up and saw Buffy, Willow, and Giles starting at them with
perplexed expressions on their face.
ôUhhh...you uhh...uhh...you, uhh...want me to fix your car,ö he said,
quickly and walked as far away form her as he could. Cordelia gave him
a dirty look. ôSo guys, ha ha ha, whatÆs up?ö
ôEverything okay?ö Buffy asked suspiciously.
ôOf course it is!ö Cordelia said, with fake enthusiasm. ôXander and I
were just, arguing, about, um, stuff.ö She knew that they werenÆt
buying it, so she changed the subject. ôSo, whatÆs on the agenda for
today? Vampires, obituaries, Inca mummies, oh, lemme guess...you found
a dead body in the locker room?ö
ôWell Giles was just about to tell me something important. Giles?ö The
slayer said.
The watcher took a deep breath and started to speak. ôW..Well y..you
all need to hear this,ö he stammered, ôso listen carefully. IÆm going
to warn you that this horrible news. I have come across a new
prophecy.ö He looked at Buffy and almost shed a tear. <My God>, he
thought, <how can I tell her this? How is she going to react?> He took
another deep breath, and noticed his hands were shaking. Giles bent
down and picked up is book. ôIÆm going to read something that will
affect us all.ö
With a deep breath, he spoke. ôO-on the n..ight of the first full moon
in the f-first month of the One thousand nine hundred and ninety-eighth
year æEl Noche del AscendeÆ will fall over the earth, and all the
vampires in the world will join together and create an unstoppable
force, killing everything in their path, taking no mercy...ö He
stopped, not wanting to keep reading.
ôIts okay, Giles, just keep reading,ö Buffy said softly.
He felt a huge lump in his throat and gulped. He wiped the sweat of his
brow, and looked down. Buffy just stared at him. All of the sudden she
felt overwhelming fear and grabbed the book away from him. ôBuffy!
No!ö he cried, but it was to late. She began to read.
ôLeading them will be...Angelus,ö she heard Willow gasp. Buffy stopped
reading and looked at Giles, but he looked away. She continued, ôHe
will be named as the new Master at midnight on the full moon for the
true Master was killed by the slayer. In a ceremony he will become the
most vicious and powerful vampire. By his side will be his one true
love, and together they will rule the earth.ö

Disclaimer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its characters, yada yada yada
belong to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, Sandollar, WB, and Fox.... IÆm just
borrowing them, (although I wish Angel was mine!) Everything else
belongs to me!
AuthorÆs note: This is your usual generic story. Angel is still good,
so basically in my story surprise/innocence didnÆt happen. Willow and
Oz are together, and Xander and Cordy are still hiding their secret
utility closet rondevuÆs. This is going to be a long story, and will
take some time so be patient with me. IÆm not very good at story
telling, so if this totally sucks and isnÆt read-worthy, just let me
know.Oh yeah, and I want feedback, feedback, and more feedback. I donÆt
care if itÆs good or bad, just tell me what you thought of it.
PART 2 PG (Language)
ôOh my God.ö she said softly. She dropped the book and backed away
from it. Buffy felt like her body was going to collapse. She flung her
hand over her mouth as tears formed in her eyes. ôThat canÆt be true.ö
Everyone sat there in silence. Buffy started turned to her watcher and
grabbed his arms. ôThis canÆt be true! The other prophecy didnÆt come
true? Remember, I lived. I didnÆt die. I lived. I lived damn it!
And I killed the master!ö
ôNo Buffy,ö Willow said softly, ôYou died. Even though it was only for
a few moments, you still died.ö.
ôNo. It wonÆt happen to Angel. We have to do something. We have to
stop it.ö She ran over to the pile of books that Gills had been
searching through and threw one at him.ö She did the same to Cordy,
Xander, and Willow, but they just stood there, not really knowing what
to do. ôWhat are you all waiting for? Start looking!ö
Xander put down the book and walked over to his blonde haired friend.
ôThere isnÆt anything we can do.ö He tried to put his arm around her
but she pushed him away.
ôNo. There is something. There has got to be.ö She pleaded. But she
knew deep in her heart that it was hopeless. She sat down on the steps
and didnÆt say anything. She didnÆt cry. She didnÆt move.
There was an awkward silence. Giles spoke first. ôBuffy, we have got
to keep you safe.ö
ôMe? What about Angel? It said...Oh God...no...ö her voice trailed off
into silence.
ôThis is awful. What can we do?ö Willow asked, putting her arms around
her still friend. ôIts gonna be okay,ö she whispered to Buffy.
ôI donÆt know Willow, I just donÆt know.ö Giles replied. He felt so
helpless.
ôWhat does ôEl Noche del AscendeÆ mean, Giles?ö Willow asked.
ôUhh...roughly translated, it would be spanish for æThe Night of the
RisingÆ,ö he told her.
Cordelia spoke up. ôWell who is AngelÆs true love?ö
ôDuh Einstein. ItÆs Buffy. Everyone knows how much he loves her.ö
Xander said dryly.
ôJust can it, Xander. Stop trying to be funny, ö snapped Cordelia.
ôWhat? All I said was...ö
ôYour not helping!!!ö she interrupted.
ôHuh? Why I oughta just...ö Xander stood up and started walking toward
her, but Giles stopped him.
ôCordelia, Xander, please stop it. We donÆt need you arguing right now.
This is a very serious matter and the whole damn world is at stake,ö
Giles said. The two teenagers stopped and gave each other dirty looks.
Even thought they pretended to hate each other, secretly there was such
passion and chemistry between them that they couldnÆt control.
ôXander, you are right. Buffy is AngelÆs true love. That is why we
have got to keep her away from him.ö
ôNo.ö
ôWhat?ö
ôYou heard me, Giles. I said no. There is no way you can keep me away
from him.ö
ôBut Buffy you read the prophecy. It said that his true love will rule
by his side. They will make you a vampire.ö Willow said.
ôIÆm sorry but I will never stay away from him. I love him too damn
much.ö
ôBuffy you are one of the strongest slayers in history, but there is no
way that you can take on an army of that caliber and force.ö Giles
said.
ôNo. I have to face it. It is my job. I canÆt just run away when
something like this happens. Maybe your right. Maybe I will die, but
I will die fighting.ö Buffy walked over to where her weapons are kept
and picked up a crossbow. ôIÆm the slayer and I was chosen to fight all
the vampires, and that is exactly what I will do.ö
ôBuffy...ö
ôIÆm sorry but this is a risk I will just have to take.ö
ôLook. You wanted me to run when it was prophesied that the Master was
going to kill me, and when Spike and Drusilla came into town, but I
canÆt do it. I canÆt run away from these things. It is my destiny to
fight.ö The Slayer slammed the crossbow down on the table, snapping it
in two, and picked up GilesÆ book. ôI canÆt believe all this is
happening.ö
ôWe will do all we can. IÆll see what I can find in my diaries.
Willow, uh, uh, you should s..start looking on that blasted machine--ö
ôDo you mean the computer?ö She asked with a smile.
ôY..y.es. And Xander, Cordelia and you--ö
ô..should start looking in all the books. I know I know.ö
ôUuggghhh!!! Why do I always get stuck with him?ö Cordy whined.
ôNOT NOW, Cordelia!ö Buffy, Xander, and Willow said in unison.
ôWell fine then,ö she muttered under her breath.
ôWell what should I do Giles...ö Buffy was cut off shortly by a loud
slamming of the library door. She looked over and saw Principle Snyder
walk in.
ôWell well well. IsnÆt this a quaint little meeting. May I ask why you
are all not in class? Maybe you can provide the explanation, Miss
Summers?ö
ôUh...Uh, Well...We were all just leaving, right guys?ö Buffy stammered
as she grabbed her bag. The four friends scrambled to leave the room
when he cut them off. He pushed his way in front of them.
ôNot so fast, Miss Summers. Now you listen and you listen good.ö The
evil look on SnyderÆs face almost frightened Buffy. It was almost as
bad as a vampire. ôI donÆt like you. I donÆt like you at all. You
give off the aroma of suspension. Maybe even expulsion. That is why
you are going to show around the new student that just transferred here
from San Diego.ö He smirked at her. ôShe is waiting outside. Go
introduce yourself.ö When she just stood there, he got angry. ôNOW!ö
ôWith all do respect, Mame, Uh I mean Sir,ö Xander said while Willow put
her hand over her mouth and tried to stifle her laugh, ôIf you donÆt
like Buffy then why would you put the care of a new student in her
hands?ö
Snyder glared at him. ôYouÆd better watch it, Mr. Harris. One more
comment like that out of you and its detention time.ö he snapped.
ôDonÆt question my authority.ö And with that, he walked out of the
library.
ôYikes. What crawled up his butt this morning?ö
ôI heard that Mr. Harris.ö SnyderÆs voice said from the hall. ôAre you
coming, Miss Summers?ö
Buffy sighed. ôYes Mr. Snyder. IÆll be right there.ö Buffy picked up
her black leather bag and made way to leave when she turned around and
said, ôGuys, Please do everything that you can.ö
ôDonÆt worry Buffy, we will,ö
