  58. He trampled down the street, burning with this insatiable lust all too ne=

  60. to him. Nothing else mattered as he sought the source of the essence he
  61. smelled back on Main Street. She was a lovely girl, yes; one he could hav=

  63. seen himself asking to the Junior Prom, but none of that mattered now. Al=

  65. that counted to him was the pulsing in his gut, screaming for the soothin=

  67. warmth of fresh blood to coat his stomach=85=20

  69. He licked his dry lips as he picked up her breathing about thirty feet
  70. ahead. He picked up his pace, darting in and out of shadows, until he was
  71. at last at pouncing distance. His face bore the distortion of the demon,
  72. and his eyes were lit a fiery red, as a low growl escaped from his throat.
  73. The girl turned around warily, until she could see the points of red in t=
  74. he
  75. darkness.

  77. She never had time to scream=85

  79. In the blink of an eye, he was on her. His teeth  set into the soft flesh
  80. of her neck=97her warm blood flowing over his tongue, and down his throat=

  82. held her in a vise like grip, allowing for no movement. One hand sealed h=

  84. mouth, while the other supported her back as he continued to feast. At
  85. last, her heart fluttered, then stopped; her body went flaccid; and any
  86. evidence of life left in her was gone. He dropped the pale form onto the
  87. sidewalk, able to hear her skull crack as her head hit first. He looked
  88. into the sky and took a deep breath. It wasn't a necessity, of
  89. course=97merely a human habit he hadn't disposed of. He wiped his lips, a=

  91. chin of the small trickle of blood that had escaped while feeding,
  92. then looked down at the dead girl.

  94. "Two weeks ago, I was a god to you=85. and every bitch in this city. Two
  95. weeks ago, I vowed to get respect from all of you. Now, I am the devil, a=

  97. you will all serve me!"

  99. From behind him, he could hear the slow clapping of a single pair of hand=

  101. He turned and saw the silhouette of a man a little taller than him.

  103. "Nice melodrama," the shadow said, "A real fine example of grade A cheese=

  107. "Angel, don't f*** with me now. I'm not in the mood!"=20

  109. "Angel's gone, boy. He died and left me in charge," Angelus smirked, "and
  110. that's no way to treat your sire. I could still kill you."

  112. "Yeah, well come on! Take your best shot!"

  114. "Xander, Xander, Xander," Angelus  sighed, "All cocky now that you've
  115. killed your first? You have a lot to learn, my friend. A LOT to learn." H=

  117. stepped out of the shadow and approached Xander. "I can't kill you yet.
  118. You're my secret weapon. Come on, Dru's been dying to see you again"

  179. told from inside of Buffy's head.

  182. feedback.  Okay, now on to the story.

  185. The Rose

  188. I feel confused . . .and lost . . . and bewildered.  The last time I felt
  189. this way was when the order of Terraca were trying to kill me.  Then I'd
  190. gone to the only place I felt safe: Angel's.  Angel.  Now there's a word
  191. that means something totally different to me now.  Let's just say that
  192. seventeen ain't all it's cracked up to be.  Since I turned seventeen, I've
  193. nearly been killed several times,  but that's nothing new.   My boyfriend
  194. and I made love for the first time.  I lost my virginity.  He lost his
  195. soul.  Now all he wants to do is hurt me.
  196.  
  197. Since Angel switched to the other side, I've spent hours in my room
  198. listening to the song "The Rose."  There are two lines that describe my
  199. feelings.  One is:
  200. "Some say love, it is a razor
  201. That leaves your soul to bleed."
  202. That pretty much describes what Angel did to me.  When we first met, we
  203. couldn't keep ourselves from loving each other, but we thought we had to.
  204. Everytime I saw him, my love for him cut at my soul.  Now, I still love my
  205. Angel, but he wants to hurt me.  Everytime I see the face of the guy I
  206. love, it cuts my soul.
  207.  
  208. I know the Angel I see is not my Angel, the one I love and that loves me,
  209. but I still can't get rid of the feeling deep down inside my heart that my
  210. Angel is still in there somewhere.  I will always belong  to my Angel.  I
  211. wish I could bring him back.  It's because I son't know if my Angel can be
  212. brought back that I can't slay him.  What if when I finally can slay him,
  213. and I do slay him, then I go to school the next day and Ms. Calendar says
  214. she found a way to bring him back?  What if he picks a fight with me, and I
  215. stake him without thinking and then Giles tells me there's some ancient
  216. ritual that can restore his soul?  There are just too many what ifs.  After
  217. all:

  220. Lies the seed, that with the sun's love
  221. In spring, becomes the rose."

  264. At 10:30, Angel crawled into WillowÆs bed. He had a headache. 
  265. Explaining to Mrs. Rosenberg why "Willow" was so late getting 
  266. home had been a nightmare straight from the hellmouth. Now 
  267. it was quiet, and dark, some blue light filtering through the 
  268. blinds. Buffy lay on the floor, a sleeping bag rolled out under 
  269. her. She looked peaceful and pretty in sleep, snuggling down 
  270. into the folds of purple fabric. He remembered vaguely looking 
  271. down at her a month ago, as she snuggled next to him. It had 
  272. been different then. 
  273.  
  274. How was she taking all of this now?
  275.  
  276. Other than the bits of practical information sheÆd passed on to him, 
  277. they hadnÆt spoken since his soul had been returnedà at least not 
  278. directly, anyway. Even if he had been looking through WillowÆs eyes, 
  279. heÆd seen the look on her face after heÆd renewed his promise of 
  280. love. It made him uncomfortable though, with Willow feeling 
  281. everything as he'd felt it, knowing all his most intimate thoughts, and
  282. so much more besidesà
  283.  
  284. It really shouldnÆt have bothered him. Willow wasnÆt a prying girl. If 
  285. he could chose anyone to share his pain with, it would be her- 
  286. except for Buffy, that is.
  287.  
  288. Did she still feel the same way? Or had the monster controlling his 
  289. body extinguished the feelings sheÆd uttered what seemed like a 
  290. century ago?
  291.  
  292. He didnÆt know- was afraid to ask what hell his devilish body had 
  293. put her through since the change. He would find out soon enough 
  294. when he got back into his body, and frankly, he wasnÆt eager to find 
  295. out.
  296.  
  297. SheÆd wanted him back badly enough to let Jenny cast a spell 
  298. blindly, to let her best friend risk her life, he reminded himself.
  299.  
  300. But did she really mean it? Or was it just some lingering shard 
  301. of an old affection that had long since died away that kept her 
  302. searching aimlessly for him?
  303.  
  304. The tears, he reminded himself for the thousandth time. SheÆd 
  305. been crying. SheÆd been moved. 
  306.  
  307. Angel sighed. Tonight would be the last night he ever spent 
  308. without the demon tearing at him. He wondered how Willow was 
  309. faring at Jenny CalendarÆs house. Probably much better than he 
  310. was. After all, it had not been Willow whoÆd killed so many 
  311. innocent people.
  312.  
  313. Buffy rolled over and then stretched out like a cat. After the moment 
  314. of movement, all became still once again, freezing the scene in time.
  315.  
  316. Could she ever forgive him? Would she?
  317.  
  318. Angel was tired. HeÆd almost forgotten the fact that he now needed 
  319. sleep. The pillow was soft, and impossible to resist. He dropped 
  320. his head down, and was instantly asleep.

  324. Willow lay wide awake in the dark guest room, tracing the pattern on 
  325. the ceiling with her eyes. She demon growled within her, a contented 
  326. murmur. SheÆd had her fill for the day, and the terrible hunger that had 
  327. filled her earlier was gone, replaced by an animal-like satisfaction. 
  328.  
  329. But she couldnÆt sleep. Something within her was forcing her awake. 
  330. She felt more like sheÆd just overdosed on coffee than anything else. 
  331.  
  332. Then, like a tidal wave, memories took her heart by storm, despite her 
  333. efforts to ignore them. She remembered the AngelÆs agony, his 
  334. desperation, his love. Such strong feelings- how did he keep them 
  335. contained so easily?
  336.  
  337. Not easily, she realized. To live like thisà
  338.  
  339. For Willow, there was an end. Tomorrow evening, if everything went as 
  340. planned, sheÆd be back to her old self, but for him-
  341.  
  342. Merely a renewal of the curse. Worse than a death sentence, even, 
  343. because the torment never ended. Except for that one moment in time.
  344.  
  345. She could feel it as strongly as any of the torturous feelings he
  346. retained. 
  347. It stood alone against all his hellish existence, one moment of pure joy.
  348.  
  349. For a moment, it was all worth it simply for her, the one he gave himself
  350.  
  351. to. And it still was, she confirmed, resuming with her eyes the pursuit
  352. of 
  353. the ceiling tiles.

  420. Part 9

  423. Willow and Angel sat together on the bed in AngelÆs apartment,
  424. the rest of the party seated on chairs close by. He handed her a 
  425. packet of blood. The hacker looked at it with wide eyes, and then 
  426. looked back up at Angel questioningly. He nodded, and she 
  427. pulled at the plastic. It ripped, and blood spurted out.
  428.  
  429. "Willow!" Buffy grimaced as she wiped the at the splat of blood 
  430. on her white shirt. "This was brand new!"
  431.  
  432. "Sorry," Willow answered distractedly, looking around the room. 
  433. Giles and Jenny were rubbing at similar stains on their clothes. 
  434. "Sorry, guys. I guess I donÆt know my own strength." She looked 
  435. at the image of herself and her brow wrinkled. "Now what?"
  436.  
  437. "Just think about the hunger."
  438.  
  439. Willow stared at the blood, and with a roar, her face changed. 
  440. "Woah." She touched her forehead. Then she looked up. Three pairs 
  441. of eyes were glued to her. "Do you mind?" The growl startled even 
  442. her. "IÆd like to eat in peace."
  443.  
  444. Buffy raised her eyebrows. "Okay then. So, umàGiles, Miss Calendar! 
  445. What about this spell youÆre going to cast?" Better than "Nice weather 
  446. weÆre having," she thought sarcastically.
  447.  
  448. Giles answered. "Actually, the soul switch is a much easier spell. Since 
  449. IÆm familiar with it, Jenny and I can perform it together."
  450.  
  451. "Oh. Good. So youÆre sure itÆs going to work this time? No more 
  452. out-of-body experiences?"
  453.  
  454. Miss Calendar sighed.
  455.  
  456. "Sorry," Buffy was apologizing when they heard a muffled cry.
  457.  
  458. "A-gel?"
  459.  
  460. Despite WillowÆs request, they couldnÆt help turning around. The girl in 
  461. the vampireÆs body was struggling with a empty blood packet where she 
  462. couldnÆt seem to dislodge her teeth.
  463.  
  464. "A-gel! IÆm stuck!" 
  465.  
  466. Angel stilled WillowÆs hands. "Hold on." He gently pulled the 
  467. packet from her teeth, and watched her lick her lips. 
  468.  
  469. Buffy turned back to the teachers. "Well now what?" ItÆs nine 
  470. oÆclock, and I donÆt think WillowÆs parents are going to hesitate 
  471. to call the police if she doesnÆt get home soon.
  472.  
  473. "YouÆre right," Willow replied, sitting back against the wall. Her 
  474. face smoothed out automatically. "But-" She looked at Angel. 
  475. "YouÆll have to go." 
  476.  
  477. "What about you," he asked, genuinely concerned. 
  478.  
  479. Buffy answered him. "Willow can stay here, right Giles?"
  480.  
  481. Giles thought for a moment. "Well, I suppose so." He consulted Willow. 
  482. "That is if thatÆs all right with you."
  483.  
  484. "Oh sure. Dark, scary place. No problem."
  485.  
  486. Miss Calendar cleared her throat. "Rupert, she can stay at my house."
  487.  
  488. "YouÆll have to block out your windows," Angel informed her.
  489.  
  490. "No problem," she answered, "We can move some furniture."
  491.  
  492. Giles stood up and looked at the trio. "Alright then, letÆs get moving"
  493.  
  494. "Oh no!" Willow hit herself in the head. "The term paper! You have to 
  495. go to school and hand it in, Angel."
  496.  
  497. "You want me to go to school?"
  498.  
  499. "ItÆs in the black trapper inside my bookbag. Buffy can help you with
  500. stuff."
  501.  
  502. "Right," Buffy answered. "I think a sleepoverÆs in order, yes?"
  503.  
  504. "Good idea," Giles remarked. "Jenny?" 
  505.  
  506. "Alright, come on Willow." 
  507.  
  508. Willow nearly hit her head getting into the car. "Remember: English 
  509. research paper. Black trapper." 
  510.  
  511. "OK."

  513. Angel followed Buffy to the car. How the *hell* was he going to get
  514. through a whole day of school?

  687. Slayer," both the TV series and the movie.  To ensure that we all get 
  688. to enjoy as much fiction as possible, please adhere to the following

  692. to Buffy.  Crossovers are great, and expected, but general

  822.                           J─ZEN'S STORY CONTINUED
  823.  
  824.     After she died, I had nothing.  With my sister's exile, my father had 
  825. lost the will to govern the town.  As a result, the title I inherited 
  826. was an empty one with no real power.  It didn't matter much.  The minor 
  827. nobility was losing power anyway.
  828.     The townspeople no longer had any respect for me as their lord because 
  829. I had "concealed my sister's evil nature for so long."  They never 
  830. wasted an opportunity to gloat over what they had done, especially in 
  831. front of me.  And I couldn't punish those responsible because they had 
  832. become town heroes.
  833.     So I left.  I went into the woods and killed every animal I could find.  
  834. I guess I figured that if I couldn't take my anger out on my sister's 
  835. killers, I would take it out on the creatures I hunted.  I lived like 
  836. that for about a month, I would say before the vampire who made me 
  837. attacked me.
  838.     She said she chose me because she though I would be a savage killer.  
  839. And she was right.  When I was changed, the demon took hold of my anger 
  840. and amplified it.  She didn't know why, of course.  She had only been 
  841. watching me for two nights.  She never found out either.  In my rage, I 
  842. killed her three nights later.
  843.     But with the new found power I had, I was finally able to take revenge 
  844. on the town.  I slaughtered the men my sister had named, their families, 
  845. their friends.  And then, I turned on the rest of the town.  I killed 
  846. every living thing there in the course of a week.  I gorded myself, 
  847. bathed in their blood and finally torched the whole place.  I sat and 
  848. watched the blaze from the roof of my house until the flames started to 
  849. consume it as well.
  850.     Only then did I leave.  I left Prussia, leaving a trail of bloodless 
  851. corpses and body parts in my wake.  I would attack anyone who crossed my 
  852. path.  I must admit, the watcher diaries do not do my early years 
  853. justice.  I became the monster that other vampires could only hope to 
  854. emulate.
  855.     My favorite targets were angry mobs, especially ones in persuit of 
  856. assumed witches and devil worshippers.  I ripped them apart one by one.  
  857. Sometimes, I would stalk people for weeks, play with their minds a bit 
  858. before I finally killed them, but those were rare occasions and the 
  859. victims were *very* special ones.
  860.     For 225 years I slaughtered people all over Europe.  I revelled in 
  861. death and destruction.  Until I retuned to K÷ln.
  862.     It was one of those special cases I had mentioned.  I had been tracking 
  863. a well known master witch judge up the Rhineland for weeks.  I had him 
  864. completely out of his mind.  He kept raving about the ghost of a 
  865. wrongfully condemned witch that was haunting him.
  866.     I had finally cornered him in an ally when she jumped me.  She was 
  867. beautiful, with an aristocratic aire that was out of place in that part 
  868. of town.  In my distraction the man I had been persuing managed to 
  869. escape.  That only angered me even more.
  870.     We fought for about an hour or so, neither of us giving ground.  But 
  871. she was tiring, I knew it and she knew it.  I finally managed to find an 
  872. opening and was able to beat her into unconciousness.  I was about to 
  873. kill her when I noticed a flicker of silver around her neck.  I went to 
  874. look closer and found a silver chain attached to a large silver locket.
  875.     I was taken aback by it.  A memory stirred in me of a similar locket I 
  876. had given Verena on her wedding day.  As I looked at it more closely, I 
  877. found that it was too similar to that one to be a coincidence.  And, 
  878. when I turned it over, I saw it.  The inscription said... I guess the 
  879. closest I can translate it into English would be, "To my Verena, my 
  880. little prophet.  With love and hope, JΣzen." 
  881.     I read those words over and over again.  And as I did, all the anger I 
  882. had felt over hear death, left me.  More than that, I remembered the 
  883. visions Verena had had about the town and about me.  I finally decided 
  884. that I couldn't kill this girl.  I took her to where her watcher's shop 
  885. was and pushed her inside the doorway where she'd be safe.
  886.

  888.  
  889.     "And, as the diaries state, I disappeared,"  JΣzen concluded.  He 
  890. stopped to think a minute.  "Actually that's not entirely true.  I 
  891. saught the slayer out about a week later.  I wanted to know how she got 
  892. the locket. 
  893.     "She told me that it had been handed down from mother to daughter for 
  894. several generations.  She was told to wear it for protection.  When she 
  895. asked why, I told her about the day I had given it to her 
  896. great-great-great, etc., grandmother.  I don't know what possessed her 
  897. to believe me, but she did.  On top of that, she gave me the locket and 
  898. had me look inside.
  899.     "When I did, I understood.  The pictures that stared back at me, the 
  900. ones she had been told were her protectors were the miniature portraits 
  901. an artist friend of mine had drawn of my sister and I.  I took the 
  902. locket and swore on it to change my ways."
  903.     They walked on in silence for a while, neither of them willing to break 
  904. the silence.  Finally, Buffy brushed a tear from her cheek and asked, 
  905. "So what have you been doing for the last 125 years?  Hiding?"
  906.     "Actually, I traveled quite extensively," he answered.  "I learned 
  907. several other languages and kept myself informed of what was going on 
  908. with other vampire and the slayers, as well.  For a good part of those 
  909. years, I managed to stay informed, even though I was seemingly no longer 
  910. in touch with the world."
  911.     They walked on, and he started laughing.
  912.     "What's so funny," she asked.
  913.     "The few years I was out of touch," he explained.  "Imaging, a 300 year 
  914. old man being stupid enough to get stuck in East Germany when they 
  915. closed the country.  Worse!  I was stuck in Mecklenburg!  The province 
  916. that was legendary for being 100 years behind everyone else!  Oh well, I 
  917. managed to get out of that situation... eventually."
  918.     Buffy smiled as they continued walking.  Their route took them to the 
  919. front of the high school.  "Oh," when she realized where they were, "we 
  920. should go in and talk to Giles.  He'll want to hear about all this."
  921.     "Lead on, My Lady," JΣzen said with a bow.
