"Huh? Oh!" Giles murmured, facing the large tomb.
Buffy marched up to the front doors and waltzed in.
There were a set of steps leading down to the main floor of the crypt. Buffy walked down them carefully, allowing her eys to adjust to the difference between the glaring sun outside and the darkness of the mausoleum.
"May I?" Giles asked, stepping down beside her.
"Be my guest," she said as she handed him the flashlight.
He turned the flashlight on, illuminating the darkened crypt.
Buffy grimaced. It was bad enough that the crypt smelled of dampness and decay, she didn't need to see why. It was a forgotten place filled with dust and cobwebs. A huge marble tomb took up the center of the mausoleum, with the figure of a religious man on top of it. *A little bare, but hey when you're dead, who cares?!* she thought to herself.
Giles shined the light onto the wall, peering into the gaping hole that the vampire had left.
"It's a relicuery," Giles explained,turning to Buffy, "used to house items of religious signifigance, most commonly a finger or some other body part of a Saint."
Buffy made a disgusted face and slumped against the wall.
"Note to self: religion- freaky," she said aloud to herself.
Giles shined the flashlight around the tomb. he stopped on a plaque high above them, near the ceiling.
"Du Lac," he said, reading the inscription. "Oh dear. Oh dear."
Buffy glanced up at the plaque and then back to Giles.
"I hate when you say that," she declared.
"Josephus du Lac was buried here," Giles continued, scanning the rest of the mausoleum. "He belonged to a religious sect that was excommunicated by the Vatican at the turn of the century."
"Excommunicated *and* sent to Sunnydale. That's a guy big wit the sinning," Buffy said as she looked at Giles questioningly. *So, what's the big deal* she thought, *Who cares who this guy was?*
"Remember the book that was stolen by a vampire a few weeks ago?" Giles said, steeping closer to the plaque.
"Yeah," Buffy nodded, pushing herself from the wall and following Giles.
"It was written by du Lac...Damn it," he cursed.
Buffy looked at Giles worriedly. *Giles. Cursing. Those two together...* she thought to herself, *are never good."
"I let it slip my mind with all the excitement," he finished.
"I'm guessing it wasn't a 'Taste of the Vatican' cookbook," she replied.
"No. The, uh...book was said to contain rituals and spells that wreak unspeakable evil," Giles said, walking up the steps and out of the crypt. Buffy folowed him. "However, it was written in Archaic Latin, so thaht nobody, but the sect members could understand it."
"So, everything's cool then?" Buffy replied hopefully, shutting the door behind her.
"No, it's not. First, the book was taken from the library," he answered. "And now, the vampires have stolen something from du Lac's tomb."
"Do you think they figured out how to read the book?"
Giles shrugged his shoulders and let out a deep sigh.
"Something's coming Buffy and whatever it is, I can gurantee it's not good," Giles said, walking back towards the school.
Buffy stared after her Watcher and winced. She walked after him, caught up in her own thoughts of inevitable trouble, according to Giles anyway.
"So, um...what do we do?" Buffy finally said as they reached the driveway to the school.
Giles was so immersed in his own thoughts that he only gave her a mumbled response.
"Giles?" she tried again.
"Oh...uh...yes?" he finally answered distractedly.
"I said 'what do we do?'"
"I don't know...um...I'll have to research it a little more," he said quietly. "But for now, you had better head to your last couple of classes. You already missed your career seminar for today and you certainly cannot afford to have Principal Snyder breathing down your neck."
"Okay," Buffy said dejectedly. "I'll catch you after school."
Buffy walked towards her locker to get her English books. She stopped halfway and turned around.
"And Giles..." she started to say.
Giles turned around and raised an eyebrow.,
"Mmm?"
"I'm sorry," she said sincerely.
"Right," he answered. "I'll see you after school Buffy."

The final bell rang and Buffy headed for the library to check in with Giles. She pushed open the door and found willow and Xander sitting at a desk, waiting for her patiently. They smiled at her arrival and Buffy felt herself relax a little.
"Hey," she said grabbing her bag from the counter and sitting down next to Will.
"Hi," Willow replied.
Xander merely nodded, his mouth full from a plain bagel he had grabbed from the career fair.
"Cute Xander," Buffy said teasingly. "At least you got something out of your career seminar today."
Beside her Willow laughed softly, while Xander shot back a crooked grin.
"So, where's Giles?" Buffy asked, scanning the library for his tweed-clad figure. She spotted him up in the stacks with yet another stack of books in his arms. *This can't be good*, she thought.
"Buffy?" she heard Willow ask beside her. "Where's you go on your field trip today?"
"Huh?...oh what?" Buffy said, shaking her head.
"Field trip," Xander said across the way, repeating his best friend's words. "Today. You. Giles. Missed your lovely shrubbery class for it I might add. Where...did...it...go?"
Buffy shot Xander a playful glare and turned to face Willow.
"The cemetery...you know gravestones, dead people, that sort of thing," she said mocking Xander subtlely.
She had just finished explaining what had happened the night before and the entire situation, when Giles emerged from the second story stacks with a book in his hands.
"Really?" Xander asked Giles.
"I'm afraid so," Giles huffed in return.
"So, Giles is sure that the vampire who stole his book is connected to the one you slayed last night," Willow interjected, turning to Buffy. "Or is it slew?" she added thoughtfully.
"Both are correct," Giles said above them as he began to walk towards the stairs. "And yes, I'm sure. Du Lac was both a theologan and a mathmematician. This article describes an invention of his, which he called the du Lac cross," he finished, walking down the stairs to meet them.
"So, why go to all the trouble of inventing something and then giving it a weak name like that?" Xander said exuberantly, taking a break from his bagel-eating fest. "I mean, I'd have gone with the Cross-o-Matic, or the Amazing Mr. Cross."
Buffy and Willow looked at him blankly. Xander glanced at his company's unamused faces, slumped back in his chair, and continued to munch on his bagel.
"The cross was more than a mere symbol," Giles stated, handing the article over to Willow, so that she and Buffy could look at it. "It was used to understand certain mystical texts, to decipher hidden messages and so forth."
Buffy glanced over at the du Lac cross. It was an ornately carved gold cross upon a red cloth. *Priceless*, Buffy though to herself.
"So, you're saying these vampires went to all this hassle for a basic decoder ring?" Buffy said, raising an eyebrow.
"Actually, yes...I suppose I am," Giles admitted, leaning forward onto the desk.
"According to this, du Lac destroyed every cross, except the one buried with him," Willow said, reading from the book.
"Why destroy your own work?" Buffy asked Giles.
"Perhaps, he feared what might happen if it fell into the wrong hands," he answered as he began to pace behind Xander.
"A fear, we'll soon get to experience for ourselves," Xander interjected, "up close and personal."
Giles sighed deeply, took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"Unless, we can pre-empt their plans," he said worriedly, bringing his hand to his forehead.
"How?" Willow asked.
"Uh...by learning what's in the book before they do," Giles answered as he walked past Xander and sat down in the chair beside him.
"Which means we can expect to be here late into the night."
"Goody! Research party!" Willow responded, a little too enthusiastically, from the seat beside Buffy.
Xander pointed at Willow and frowned.
"Will, you need a life in the worst way," he told his friend.
"Speaking of-," Buffy said quickly, vaulting from her chair. "I really have to bail, but I promise I'll be back bright and early tomorrow and ready to slay."
"This is a matter of some urgency Buffy," Giles said as he stared at her patronizingly.
"I realize that," she said quietly, staring back. "Well, you have to admit, I kinda lack in the book area," she tried to explain. "I mean you guys are the brains. I'd only be here for moral support anyway."
"That's untrue, Buff, you totally contribute," Xander responded happily. "You go for snacks!"
Buffy stared down at Willow for support. 'Help' she pleaded desperately with her eyes. Willow blinked back in understanding.
"She should go," Buffy's friend suggested, "you know, gather her strength."
Buffy nodded in agreement as she waited for Giles' response.
"Perhaps you're right. There may be fierce battles ahead," Giles finally declared, sitting back in his chair and replacing his glasses.
*Yes!* Buffy shouted silently as she grabbed her stuff and began to walk towards the door.
"But Ho-Ho's are a vital part of my cognitive process!" Xander whined at her back.
"Sorry Xan, someplace I have to be," she said, her heart almost skipping a beat at the thought of having her first *real* date with Angel. She supressed a giggle as she walked out the door leaving Xander and Giles to ponder behind her and willow to smile secretly.
