  69. Why not?  Obviously Buffy tests very well; and she is highly intelligent.
  70. I've always thought Buffy reflects another high school problem-  the
  71. student who devotes so much time to her part-time job that her schoolwork
  72. suffers!
  73. Don't forget, it's difficult to have good grades if you never get to class,
  74. no matter how smart you are!  
  75. Even Oz, who's a genius, has to repeat the year because he'd missed so much
  76. time.

  94. Yup.  Colleges look *much* more at SAT and ACT scores.  GPAs definitely
  95. help, but it's mostly the scores.  Say I had good test scores and they
  96. were on the edge about accepting me-a 5.0 would probably tip them over
  97. the edge to "Yes."  Which doesn't mean that Buffy won't get accepted
  98. anywhere.  She does have quite a few options now, though.    Also,
  99. someone mentioned that the Mayor (What's UP with him anyway?) might have
  100. doctore Buffy's test results to get her out of town--I suppose this could
  101. have happened, though tests aren't scored locally.  I'm sure he could
  102. intercept the tests at the post office, though.  Still, if he wants to
  103. get rid of her, why doesn't he send a hitman to put a bullet in Buffy's
  104. head through her window while she sleeps?  I know something like this
  105. would be pretty taboo on Buffy, but hey, it'd be faster than sending
  106. numerous vamp/demon henchmen.

  108. 2)Spike & Joyce & the entrance thingie:
  109. I think Joyce might have thought Spike was a *good* vampire, like Angel
  110. is.   After all, he was behaving somewhat well when he visited them in
  111. Becoming II.  Kind of.  And after Spike started in on his tale of woe,
  112. she probably figured he was okay.  And hey, serving him hot chocolate is
  113. better than serving him her blood.  And about Angel-she remembers him
  114. being all freak-o to her when he was bed, remembers Buffy and Spike talk
  115. about killing him in BII, sees him unabel to enter-well, I wouldn't trust
  116. him either.  Speaking of Angel's being unable to enter, why is this? 
  117. Spike had been invited before and so was able to enter now, so why wasn't
  118. Angel?  Is there some sort of time limit on this?
  119.  
  120. 3)There's pretty much only one thing about this season that has made me
  121. really cranky.  And Cranky!Jaina isn't a fun person to have around. 
  122. Let's see, Buffy's sending Angel to hell was traumatic enough to make her
  123. run away and have horrible, guilt-stricken nightmares, and it was
  124. obviously not a walk in the park for Angel, either.  So why haven't they
  125. ever TALKED about it?  Something like "I'm sorry I had to do it, but it
  126. was you or the earth" from Buffy at the very least.  I guess I'm just
  127. peeved that they have never acknowledged what happened.  Considering
  128. Angels's state after his return, I would have thought it was something
  129. they couldn't *not* talk about.  And are they ever going to explain that?
  130.  Imagine my surprise when all it took to get Angel out of Hell was a
  131. placed ring on the floor and a whispered "Goodbye."  My friend Mugsy has
  132. a claddagh ring and when we get really bored, we do those things then
  133. look up at the sky to see if anyone was sent to hell from this location. 
  134. (NO one so far, BTW.)  Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Scully Rational
  135. Explanations (SREs) on the X-Files, but I want some ANSWERS, dammit!
  136.  
  137. Okay, I'm all better now.  :)  And don't get me wrong, I'm mostly loving
  138. the season so far.  The Angel thing is just something I would fix.  Boy,
  139. this is really, really long.  Guess I'll shut up now.  ;D

  162. To say that colleges look mostly at SATs and ACTs would be wrong according to
  163. "Scaling the Walls of the Ivy League"  I don't remember who wrote it, but she
  164. was an admissions person at Princeton. There are basically three standard
  165. things colleges look at when accepting you: GPA, standardized test scores, and
  166. extra-curriculars. Plus, the essay has an INCREDIBLE impact on acceptance.
  167. Despite what most people think, these other three, however, are usually dealt
  168. with equally. According to this book, each of these factors are rated with
  169. points by category. As for SATs, they do not look at individual scores.
  170. Buffy's 1430 would go in the 1400-1450 category which could earn her a certain
  171. number points towards being accepted. Same would go for her GPA. The problem
  172. with these truly good colleges like Carnegie Mellon (speaking as someone who
  173. applied to these top-ranked colleges and was very viscious in judging the
  174. competition, I don't think she could get into an Ivy league or top-ranked
  175. college), they get many applications from students with amazing scores, GPAs,
  176. clubs, etc, they must find a way to rank them all since they can't accept them
  177. all, so they use a point system. Since Buffy would lose points in both GPA and
  178. clubs, I doubt she would gain acceptance without an amazing essay (which she
  179. could no doubt provide, but how much of her life is a no-talking part?) I
  180. think Joyce is just grabbing at straws, but then again, anyone remember Zack
  181. getting into Stanford with his SAT scores on "Saved By The Bell?"

  195. I noticed that when Xander woke up in the factory the majority of questions 
  196. he asked Willow were tactical in nature. I found it interesting that he was 
  197. obviously trying to gather information to form a plan. I found myself 
  198. wondering if that is a natural outgrowth of dealing with so many 
  199. supernatural menaces, or if it comes from the soldier experience he gained 
  200. last Hallowed. Maybe its a little of both.

  241. Well, I don't know but I can give you some numbers and let you judge for
  242. yourself.  First of all, the purpose of these diaries is to calculate
  243. household ratings and provide demographic information -- percent of teens
  244. or 18-34 year olds and so on watching a particular show -- for each of the
  245. 210 *local* television markets.  There are 44 big TV markets that have
  246. households (about 300 to 500 per market) whose viewing is electronically
  247. monitored automatically by meters and stations in those markets have
  248. household rating numbers -- but not demographic information -- available on
  249. a daily basis.  In those big markets, diaries supplement the information on
  250. household ratings provided by the meters and provide the only information
  251. on demographics that those stations receive.  In the other 166 markets,
  252. diaries are the only way that stations get any local information.  
  253.  
  254. During Sweeps months, Nielsen says that it sends out a total of over
  255. 100,000 diaries.  That sounds like a lot but it's still only about 475
  256. diaries per market on average.  So the bottom line is that you're one of a
  257. few hundred households in your market and so I figure you can have some
  258. impact on the ratings in your local market (especially if it's a small
  259. market since the total number of diaries there would be less than the

  264. ObBuffy:  Here's how Buffy ended up ranking among The WB's dramas during
  265. the November Sweeps.  These are overnight (i.e. from the 44 metered
  266. markets) averages for the last 4 weeks.  Buffy got helped by the fact that
  267. DC and Charmed got blown away last night because of the holiday:
  268.  
  269. 1. 7th Heaven: 7.8 rating/12 share
  270. 2. Dawson's Creek: 5.8 rating/9 share
  271. 2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5.8 rating/9 share
  272. 4. Charmed: 5.6 rating/9 share
  273. 5. Felicity: 5.0 rating/8 share
  274. 6. Hyperion Bay: 2.9 rating/5 share
  275.  
  276. I think The WB has got to be fairly happy with Buffy.  And apart from all
  277. the numbers, I think 3 of the 4 episodes this month -- Homecoming,
  278. Revelations and Lovers Walk -- were great episodes and I really think
  279. things are promising for the rest of the season.  It looks like this "big
  280. year" for The Mayor thing is going to become a a major part at some point
  281. in the rest of the season.  We've got the possibility of Spike and Dru
  282. coming back at some point.  Who knows where they're going to take the
  283. relationships; other than they have to find a plausible way to get rid of
  284. Angel and Cordelia (I'm still in denial about my favorite character leaving
  285. the show -- I know she's not going to be on next year but I try not to
  286. think about it) or what they're going to do with Faith or who's going to
  287. college and who's not.  I feel way, way better about this season than after
  288. the first couple of episodes, which weren't terrible or anything but seemed
  289. to be lacking.

  556.     I've been ill, and then very busy the last few weeks; so did not
  557. look at "Revelation" ep untill last Tues. (was going to back-to-back with
  558. "Lovers Walk").  When I discovered that the timer on my VCR malf-ed and I
  559. did not get any of it I was *very* annoyed and unhappy.  Is anyone onlist
  560. interested in running a copy for the desperate?  I will gladly supply the
  561. blank tape, postage both ways, and reasonable compensation for the time &
  562. effort. (If it comes down to 'unreasonable'  compensation-> we'll talk.)

  595. harmless now, but suppose the curse is restored again?  the uninviting spell
  596. could be done, but what if there isn't time or opportunity to do it before
  597. angelus comes in and kills someone?

  633. I'm not worried about Buffy re-inviting Angel in . Thats her choice. But
  634. why didn't she work the reversal spell after she had invited Spike in
  635. the first time? She said it herself , he's not one to keep his promises.
  636. What would happen if he came back after she had run away and killed her
  637. mother or something just for the hell of it? Granted , its kind of
  638. far-fetched , but he's still a demon .

  652. i certainly am.  so suppose angel is changed again?  did buffy even consider
  653. that?  i am not that terribly bothered by it, but it did raise an eyebrow.

  660. good question...considering how dangerous spike can be, i was surprised buffy
  661. invited him into her house to begin with.  and, when she did invite him in,
  662. the reversal spell was not done later just in case he decided to return.

  666. now that one i am a bit mixed on.  true, spike came back to sunnydale when he
  667. said he would leave for good.  but while he was rough with willow, he didn't
  668. cause any serious bodily harm.  and as for xander, the damage was done in self
  669. defense (not putting down xander of course...he had every reason to try and
  670. stop spike).

  672. spike had the opportunity to hurt joyce, and didn't.  and after the vamp fight
  673. in the witch supply shop (or whatever that place was called) he left without
  674. further incident.  so while spike is a vamp, he does seem to have some
  675. humanity in him.

  677. and don't forget spike did help buffy in becoming.  sure, he didn't want to
  678. lose his "happy meals with legs", but he could have waited for buffy to send
  679. angel to hell and change his mind about leaving.  instead, he left as
  680. promised.  and it took dru's leaving him to bring him back to sunnydale.

  682. while spike is evil (and i love him that way), i don't consider him as
  683. dangerous as angelus, who has no humanity at all.  it's hard for me to be
  684. upset with the gang ragging on her about angel if she is going to do reckless
  685. things like inviting angel back into her house.

  702. What I'm wondering is exactly what promise did Spike break during 
  703. their previous association?  In Bcoming 2, he promised to help her 
  704. defeat Angel in return for taking Dru and himself out of town 
  705. forever.  He beat the hell ot of Angel and took Dru out of the 
  706. picture, and then he went to Brazil w/ Dru.  He kept his word.  I 
  707. can't remember any other promise made to Buffy that he broke, until 
  708. he returned to Sunnydale sans Dru looking for revenge.  This is the 
  709. only promise he ever broke.  She acts as if he's a huge liar.  I 
  710. would say that for the most part, Spike has been scrupulouly honest 
  711. with the Slayer.

  742. Then again, just how much time did she have to do it??? Not bloody much, 
  743. considering she left after fighting with her mom, killed Angel, then ran 
  744. away about twenty minutes afterwards (about 20 anyway...).  And 
  745. (considering I haven't seen the ep) I assume she hadn't cast the ritual 
  746. for Spike, because she really didn't have the time to think about that 
  747. either ( "Hi guys, let's fight zombies in my living room while I cast 
  748. this spell OK?).  Hindsight may be tweny-twenty, but when you're a 
  749. teenaged girl with (literally) the world on your shoulders...

  756. This is why I ARRRRRRRGGGGHHHH.  Dru left Spike?!?  oh well, I guess 
  757. that's my own fault for reading BEFORE I watch...  Yeah, I'm actually 
  758. considering the fact that Spike is justified in coming back.  Dru was 
  759. his reason for being, and if he lost her...  (trust me, when you can 
  760. identify with losing the only person you have EVER loved, then you can 
  761. argue on this point and ONLY then.  Sorry if I sound a bit harsh for 
  762. this mailing list, but I guess the whole 'losing the love of your life' 
  763. thing gets me a bit sore...).  Anyhow, besides, if you REALLY want to 
  764. argue, Spike did say:"and we'll never be back... _I bloody well hope_ 
  765. ...".  He knew that it would take a lot of bad stuff to make him come 
  766. back, and it did.  But at the same time, he never did say he was never 
  767. coming back... (yes, this fact WAS noticed at the time).  It seems that 
  768. no matter how much Joss prepares, we always figure it out (OK, we had 
  769. MONTHS to speculate, but hey...) and throw it out for massive 
  770. discussion.

  772.      Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that either after the first 
  773. couple of days of arguing onlist or after someone bitches about 
  774. something big onlist, it ends up getting resolved either the next week 
  775. or the week after on the show?  I'd almost consider the fact that 
  776. someone(ie: Joss) is lurking in the shadows, but they've probably got at 
  777. least half of the eps fully filmed by now...  It's an interesting 
  778. thought though...

  799. nursing a leg injury and other problems, I went on a video binge.  One
  800. tape from Reel.com was IKWYDLS. As a 'Buffy' fan I found some real
  801. interesting recursive threads.
