Why not? Obviously Buffy tests very well; and she is highly intelligent.
I've always thought Buffy reflects another high school problem- the

suffers!
Don't forget, it's difficult to have good grades if you never get to class,

You guys know I luff combos. I just do. So here's another one. ;)
1)A wrote:
>Actually, this is pretty common, basically because schools publicize SAT
>scores much more than high school GPAs when giving out statistics.
Yup. Colleges look *much* more at SAT and ACT scores. GPAs definitely
help, but it's mostly the scores. Say I had good test scores and they
were on the edge about accepting me-a 5.0 would probably tip them over
the edge to "Yes." Which doesn't mean that Buffy won't get accepted
anywhere. She does have quite a few options now, though. Also,
someone mentioned that the Mayor (What's UP with him anyway?) might have
doctore Buffy's test results to get her out of town--I suppose this could
have happened, though tests aren't scored locally. I'm sure he could
intercept the tests at the post office, though. Still, if he wants to
get rid of her, why doesn't he send a hitman to put a bullet in Buffy's
head through her window while she sleeps? I know something like this
would be pretty taboo on Buffy, but hey, it'd be faster than sending
numerous vamp/demon henchmen.
2)Spike & Joyce & the entrance thingie:
I think Joyce might have thought Spike was a *good* vampire, like Angel
is. After all, he was behaving somewhat well when he visited them in
Becoming II. Kind of. And after Spike started in on his tale of woe,
she probably figured he was okay. And hey, serving him hot chocolate is
better than serving him her blood. And about Angel-she remembers him
being all freak-o to her when he was bed, remembers Buffy and Spike talk
about killing him in BII, sees him unabel to enter-well, I wouldn't trust
him either. Speaking of Angel's being unable to enter, why is this?
Spike had been invited before and so was able to enter now, so why wasn't
Angel? Is there some sort of time limit on this?
3)There's pretty much only one thing about this season that has made me
really cranky. And Cranky!Jaina isn't a fun person to have around.
Let's see, Buffy's sending Angel to hell was traumatic enough to make her
run away and have horrible, guilt-stricken nightmares, and it was
obviously not a walk in the park for Angel, either. So why haven't they
ever TALKED about it? Something like "I'm sorry I had to do it, but it
was you or the earth" from Buffy at the very least. I guess I'm just
peeved that they have never acknowledged what happened. Considering
Angels's state after his return, I would have thought it was something
they couldn't *not* talk about. And are they ever going to explain that?
Imagine my surprise when all it took to get Angel out of Hell was a
placed ring on the floor and a whispered "Goodbye." My friend Mugsy has
a claddagh ring and when we get really bored, we do those things then
look up at the sky to see if anyone was sent to hell from this location.
(NO one so far, BTW.) Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Scully Rational
Explanations (SREs) on the X-Files, but I want some ANSWERS, dammit!
Okay, I'm all better now. :) And don't get me wrong, I'm mostly loving
the season so far. The Angel thing is just something I would fix. Boy,
this is really, really long. Guess I'll shut up now. ;D

Subject: BUFFY: SATs (OT: my opinion)
To say that colleges look mostly at SATs and ACTs would be wrong according to
"Scaling the Walls of the Ivy League" I don't remember who wrote it, but she
was an admissions person at Princeton. There are basically three standard
things colleges look at when accepting you: GPA, standardized test scores, and
extra-curriculars. Plus, the essay has an INCREDIBLE impact on acceptance.
Despite what most people think, these other three, however, are usually dealt
with equally. According to this book, each of these factors are rated with
points by category. As for SATs, they do not look at individual scores.
Buffy's 1430 would go in the 1400-1450 category which could earn her a certain
number points towards being accepted. Same would go for her GPA. The problem
with these truly good colleges like Carnegie Mellon (speaking as someone who
applied to these top-ranked colleges and was very viscious in judging the
competition, I don't think she could get into an Ivy league or top-ranked
college), they get many applications from students with amazing scores, GPAs,
clubs, etc, they must find a way to rank them all since they can't accept them
all, so they use a point system. Since Buffy would lose points in both GPA and
clubs, I doubt she would gain acceptance without an amazing essay (which she
could no doubt provide, but how much of her life is a no-talking part?) I
think Joyce is just grabbing at straws, but then again, anyone remember Zack
getting into Stanford with his SAT scores on "Saved By The Bell?"
Thanks for letting me ramble,
Marusky :)

I noticed that when Xander woke up in the factory the majority of questions
he asked Willow were tactical in nature. I found it interesting that he was
obviously trying to gather information to form a plan. I found myself
wondering if that is a natural outgrowth of dealing with so many
supernatural menaces, or if it comes from the soldier experience he gained
last Hallowed. Maybe its a little of both.
Just wondering

>What kind of impact can we have?
Well, I don't know but I can give you some numbers and let you judge for
yourself. First of all, the purpose of these diaries is to calculate
household ratings and provide demographic information -- percent of teens
or 18-34 year olds and so on watching a particular show -- for each of the
210 *local* television markets. There are 44 big TV markets that have
households (about 300 to 500 per market) whose viewing is electronically
monitored automatically by meters and stations in those markets have
household rating numbers -- but not demographic information -- available on
a daily basis. In those big markets, diaries supplement the information on
household ratings provided by the meters and provide the only information
on demographics that those stations receive. In the other 166 markets,
diaries are the only way that stations get any local information.
During Sweeps months, Nielsen says that it sends out a total of over
100,000 diaries. That sounds like a lot but it's still only about 475
diaries per market on average. So the bottom line is that you're one of a
few hundred households in your market and so I figure you can have some
impact on the ratings in your local market (especially if it's a small
market since the total number of diaries there would be less than the
average). Check this out to see what Nielsen has to say about this subject:
http://www.nielsenmedia.com/wtrrm.html
ObBuffy: Here's how Buffy ended up ranking among The WB's dramas during
the November Sweeps. These are overnight (i.e. from the 44 metered
markets) averages for the last 4 weeks. Buffy got helped by the fact that
DC and Charmed got blown away last night because of the holiday:
1. 7th Heaven: 7.8 rating/12 share
2. Dawson's Creek: 5.8 rating/9 share
2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5.8 rating/9 share
4. Charmed: 5.6 rating/9 share
5. Felicity: 5.0 rating/8 share
6. Hyperion Bay: 2.9 rating/5 share
I think The WB has got to be fairly happy with Buffy. And apart from all
the numbers, I think 3 of the 4 episodes this month -- Homecoming,
Revelations and Lovers Walk -- were great episodes and I really think
things are promising for the rest of the season. It looks like this "big
year" for The Mayor thing is going to become a a major part at some point
in the rest of the season. We've got the possibility of Spike and Dru
coming back at some point. Who knows where they're going to take the
relationships; other than they have to find a plausible way to get rid of
Angel and Cordelia (I'm still in denial about my favorite character leaving
the show -- I know she's not going to be on next year but I try not to
think about it) or what they're going to do with Faith or who's going to
college and who's not. I feel way, way better about this season than after
the first couple of episodes, which weren't terrible or anything but seemed
to be lacking.

after angel lost his soul and reverted back to evil angelus, some kind of
reversal spell was performed by the gang that basically uninvited him. so that
is why he had to be invited back in.
speaking of which....i think this was rather dingy on buffy's part. angel is

could be done, but what if there isn't time or opportunity to do it before
angelus comes in and kills someone?

I'm not worried about Buffy re-inviting Angel in . Thats her choice. But
why didn't she work the reversal spell after she had invited Spike in
the first time? She said it herself , he's not one to keep his promises.
What would happen if he came back after she had run away and killed her
mother or something just for the hell of it? Granted , its kind of
far-fetched , but he's still a demon .

i certainly am. so suppose angel is changed again? did buffy even consider
that? i am not that terribly bothered by it, but it did raise an eyebrow.
it's obvious on occasions such as this that buffy's feelings for angel
sometimes cloud her judgment.
> why didn't she work the reversal spell after she had invited Spike in
> the first time?
good question...considering how dangerous spike can be, i was surprised buffy
invited him into her house to begin with. and, when she did invite him in,
the reversal spell was not done later just in case he decided to return.
> She said it herself , he's not one to keep his promises.
now that one i am a bit mixed on. true, spike came back to sunnydale when he
said he would leave for good. but while he was rough with willow, he didn't
cause any serious bodily harm. and as for xander, the damage was done in self
defense (not putting down xander of course...he had every reason to try and
stop spike).
spike had the opportunity to hurt joyce, and didn't. and after the vamp fight
in the witch supply shop (or whatever that place was called) he left without
further incident. so while spike is a vamp, he does seem to have some
humanity in him.
and don't forget spike did help buffy in becoming. sure, he didn't want to
lose his "happy meals with legs", but he could have waited for buffy to send
angel to hell and change his mind about leaving. instead, he left as
promised. and it took dru's leaving him to bring him back to sunnydale.
while spike is evil (and i love him that way), i don't consider him as
dangerous as angelus, who has no humanity at all. it's hard for me to be
upset with the gang ragging on her about angel if she is going to do reckless
things like inviting angel back into her house.

What I'm wondering is exactly what promise did Spike break during
their previous association? In Bcoming 2, he promised to help her
defeat Angel in return for taking Dru and himself out of town
forever. He beat the hell ot of Angel and took Dru out of the
picture, and then he went to Brazil w/ Dru. He kept his word. I
can't remember any other promise made to Buffy that he broke, until
he returned to Sunnydale sans Dru looking for revenge. This is the
only promise he ever broke. She acts as if he's a huge liar. I
would say that for the most part, Spike has been scrupulouly honest
with the Slayer.

OK, yet again, my bad. I read ANOTHER post about this week's ep before
I got to see it (damn my schedule!!!), but hey, let's get to it...
>> why didn't she work the reversal spell after she had invited Spike
in
>> the first time?
Then again, just how much time did she have to do it??? Not bloody much,
considering she left after fighting with her mom, killed Angel, then ran
away about twenty minutes afterwards (about 20 anyway...). And
(considering I haven't seen the ep) I assume she hadn't cast the ritual
for Spike, because she really didn't have the time to think about that
either ( "Hi guys, let's fight zombies in my living room while I cast
this spell OK?). Hindsight may be tweny-twenty, but when you're a
teenaged girl with (literally) the world on your shoulders...
>> She said it herself , he's not one to keep his promises.
>now that one i am a bit mixed on. spike came back to sunnydale when >he
said he would leave for good. and don't forget spike did help buffy in
becoming. and it took dru's leaving him to bring him back.
This is why I ARRRRRRRGGGGHHHH. Dru left Spike?!? oh well, I guess
that's my own fault for reading BEFORE I watch... Yeah, I'm actually
considering the fact that Spike is justified in coming back. Dru was
his reason for being, and if he lost her... (trust me, when you can
identify with losing the only person you have EVER loved, then you can
argue on this point and ONLY then. Sorry if I sound a bit harsh for
this mailing list, but I guess the whole 'losing the love of your life'
thing gets me a bit sore...). Anyhow, besides, if you REALLY want to
argue, Spike did say:"and we'll never be back... _I bloody well hope_
...". He knew that it would take a lot of bad stuff to make him come
back, and it did. But at the same time, he never did say he was never
coming back... (yes, this fact WAS noticed at the time). It seems that
no matter how much Joss prepares, we always figure it out (OK, we had
MONTHS to speculate, but hey...) and throw it out for massive
discussion.
Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that either after the first
couple of days of arguing onlist or after someone bitches about
something big onlist, it ends up getting resolved either the next week
or the week after on the show? I'd almost consider the fact that
someone(ie: Joss) is lurking in the shadows, but they've probably got at
least half of the eps fully filmed by now... It's an interesting
thought though...

town lately!!! WOOHOO!!!), and the wacky; Willow's 'deputy' laugh;
Giles' wife beater 'T-shirt'; GASPer; AMSG'er(Xander rocks); and the
virgin's saliva and Marnox root spell.

I'm not a DC fan, but know of it from comments onlist. While
nursing a leg injury and other problems, I went on a video binge. One
tape from Reel.com was IKWYDLS. As a 'Buffy' fan I found some real
interesting recursive threads.
1> They talk about the body washing up on "Dawson's Beach"
2> Watch "Homecoming" and then the "Croaker Queen" contest could well
have been an inspiration. SMG *does* look good in a tiara.
3>Her bedroom scene- the cheerleader pompoms (okay-they're a standard
icon) but add in the ice skates (WML1 anyone?)
Or maybe I was taking too much pain medication?
