Does anyone else think it sucks that we hardly get to see this " Major

Oh one more thing before I forget, I remember reading something about

Hey all,
Just wanted to get my two cents in, here it goes
1)First dead man's party was pretty good but there were some things that
were just dumb. What was with the cat rising from the dead? please that
was horor flick cheesyness worthy. Oh my god.....the cat...it's rising,
rising from the dead!!aaahhhhhhhh!
2)Second what's with the lighting? It's way to well lit. THe lighting
was an aspect of the show that created the dark mysterious kind of
atmosphere. I personally don't like it extreemly well lit, it's like
you can tell that they're shooting in some expensive, well lit, movie
lot. I think we'll have to do some getting used to to do.
3)Third, what's with angel? He's been in all episodes this season so
far.(yes all two) so why don't they just use him? It's not like he 's
gotta start filming for his new show right now, or is it?(does anyone
know?) anyway just think he should be back. Not as fun without him.
More getting used to to do.
Well that's all the 2 cents I have for now.

Subject: BUFFY: ***Cool Ep***
From a guy who thought that last week's episode was "cheesy", tonight's
Buffy was a great / refreshing change.
I really liked Dead man's Party. For once, the episode didn't revolve
around Buffy & Angel alone. It was no doubt a more intense/emotionally
charged episode.
I really hoped for the Buffy bashing to go on for awhile longer. Although
Xander was being unseasonably harsh, I wanted to hear what the scooby gang
really felt. Just to get all the bad blood out.
The Zombie mask thing was just needless filler. They could've just
dedicated the show to just the bashing part. And besides, it seems that
these two past episodes' demons(plots) were all copied. Last week's
hell-slave drivers mimicked the 1960's film "The Time Machine", and this
week's ep copied "Pet Cemetary" & "Night of the living Dead". For a
second there when Giles was being surrounded by zombies, I was hoping to
see Michael Jackson and the rest of the zombies start break-dancing ala
the early 80's rock video "Thriller". =D
Buffy's choice of clothes truly shows how she's changed. No more short
miniskirts and tight t-shirts for awhile. tonight's long dress and such
was a nice touch that aided in the whole buffy-maturing-changing thing.
then again, as I mentioned in an earlier post, SMG has gained a little
weight compared to the end of season II. =P~`
Okay, maybe it's my peverted mind...but who thought that Joyc's friend
from the book-club seemed little-more than a friend (if you catch my
drift). When she came for the party, they (from what I saw) kissed each
other on the lips.....she (Joyce's friend) gave her alchohol.... you get
the pic. hahahahaha
Willow fans rejoice. I love the fact that Joss is going in this direction
with Willow's witch thingy. Can those lovely puppy-dog eyes get any
bigger???
The new set, what seems to be Sunnydale square is nice change of scenery.
That coffee house was kinda strange though. It's weird seeing any of the
buffy gang having coffee other than the Bronze.
That's it. Remark, rebuttle, comment. =)

to see another type of storyline within the story. The tension just built up

And did anyone automatically know that Pat was going to be evil as soon as she

Ok,I have my list of the things I want to cover.
*First of All someone asked about the "anywhere but here game" I dont
know if that was an example, but I believe it is at the beginning of
TDA.
*Someone asked about all the letters at the end of one of my last
posts, but I forgot who it was. They are all PB clubs.
*Something that is kinda annoying --is people coming to the list
asking for schedules, and such.I can understand, people asking for
pictures, or even info about a book or something that is the purpose
of the list. There is not someone who's life revoloves around this
list who's sole purpose is to answer all of these requests. All of
that information is availible on the WORLD WIDE WEB, 9.9 times out of
10 if the info is availible everyone will be able to find it.
*Dress COde
Well, I am from the West Coast, and last year, there was a big issue
about fems not wearing bras to school. They would wear spaghetti strap
shirts and because they did not want anyone to see their bra or just
did not feel like putting one on they would not wear one. It was a
pretty big issue. It was not at mine, but another school.People were
even sent home and forced to change. Mine is a little more strict
about dress code, i mean, there are just some things you DONT wear.
Hats are kinda up to the teacher, it is not really a big deal, but
administrators dont like to see them.
*Previews
I saw a whole slew of Previews on MOn night. THey were on during the
first part of 7th heaven (flipping channels) they were on about every
other commercial break during Hyperion Bay.
*Bronze/Coffee Shops
Did y'all notice that we did not see the Bronze in this ep at all?
WUWT? And the coffee shop we saw was not even a starbucks. So, what
does that say about the size of our town. It is a one starbucks town,
but does that mean there could be fifty other coffee shops? What about
Coffee People. That is a pretty big chain.
<<From someone who lives in the runner up to the coffee capital of the
world (not officially)>>
OK, this is the end of my rant. There is no need to say I am wrong.
This is MHO.

I get the distinct impression that Joss is building up to the revelation
about Xander's Lie in Becoming 2. I'm very much in favor of this -- and I'm
glad, even more glad having seen Dead Man's Party, that everything is not
resolving within one or two episodes. Joss did bring Buffy back to Sunnydale
quickly, but there are still many things going on that he seems to want to
take his time with. Here Here!
Now, when I first saw 'The Lie Scene' in Becoming 2, I didn't have any
problem with what Xander did -- I understood it on several levels; but
Xander not telling Buffy about Willow's curse is one thing... Xander being
all high and mighty in discussion after discussion...
"What you did was incredibly selfish... and stupid."
Selfish and Stupid? Does Valentine's Day BLACK MAGICK ring any bells?!?!?!
Sheesh.
Normally, I'm a big Xander fan, but DAMN is he in for some retribution.
Karma is going to rear up and kick that boy in the assssss.
I think that when The Lie finally does come out... it's going to have grown
into something on par with finding Jenny Calendar's disk with the Curse on
it. It's going to be big.

Next Topic: The new stuff
The relationships are different this season but, like the lighting in the
Library and the Bronze, I don't think it's because Joss or the actors are
'off' -- I /believe/ it's a conscious choice, and very much by design.
Simply put, Joss is too involved in the show /not/ to notice changes in
chemistry on screen -- we've all read how closely involved he is in every
scene -- therefore, if it's happening, he's doing all of it on purpose.
While I'm not loving the lighting changes, and I miss the 'old' way that
everyone got along, I really admire that the characters are maturing. The
way their relationships are changing seems (in my 20/20 hindsight) very much
like the changes everyone goes through in high school during a senior year.
And really, part of growing up is that you miss the way things used to be --
how many television shows have characters saying 'I miss the way things
were', even though they /personally/ haven't changed a bit since season one,
and the only changes to the show have been superficial Soap Opera
alterations to people's relationships? But on Buffy... everyone changes:
Willow, Joyce... heck, I can easily remember the Xander in the first season
who would have been horrified at the idea of yelling at Buffy -- why, she
might decide not to hang out with him then. He's becoming more
independant -- so is everyone else -- and with it comes self-reliance
outside of the support group. It's amazing stuff.
Honestly, when I see posts that read: "The gang was unusually cold to her, I
thought it would be the mask doing it to
them, but no, it was just them being themselves..." I see someone who's
really just going through the growing and change pains along with the
characters. I'm certainly not critisizing -- heck, I feel the same way, but
at the same time I have to admire the integrity of it. It's very... True.
I do have a comment about this, however:
>it could be just that Becoming 1 and 2 were so intense, that Joss
>could be feeling the pressure to write something equally brilliant
I could not disagree more with this comment if I were paid to do so. In my
opinion, the truth is the exact opposite: Joss is writing Anne and Dead
Man's Party the way that he is because he is /not/ succumbing to pressure to
produce another Becoming 1&2. I'll elaborate (big surprise there):
In so many shows (and movies) -- even successful ones (especially successful
ones, in fact) writers and directors will hit on some formula that
'works' -- Character chemistry, a certain type of story, whatever, and they
STICK to it -- CLING to it like Leonardo diCaprio to a Japanese advertising
contract. (The perenial Mulder and Scully relationship for example?)
This response isn't without merit: some shows have failed because they
abandoned the one thing that was keeping them popular. But if Joss were
feeling pressure from Becoming, I'd expect him to stick with what is working
in the show, and sure, on a Grand Scheme, he is doing that, because the
whole show works. But he changes all the little things that other shows
wouldn't dare: the Xander/Willow thing, the Xander/Buffy thing, the Clueless
Joyce thing, the Evil Angel thing... the list goes on.
I don't think these new episodes make us uneasy because Joss is 'feeling the
pressure' -- I think they make us feel uneasy because that is /exactly/ what
they are /supposed/ to do. I could be wrong about this, but I expect to
discover fairly certain proof about halfway through the season that the
weird lighting in the Library and the Bronze... and the new tension in
everyone's relationships... all of it was specifically designed to evoke
exactly the same reactions that we are talking about on the list right now.
Joss is a magician. He's got the owner's manual to my brain. :)
===
In other notes:
- -The Zombie Cat ran into the house and went to Joyce's room... Giles pulled
it out from where it was hiding... right under the Mask. Very nice
foreshadowing.
- -Insert "Giles is so cool" comments here. :) I can hardly wait to see what
he has to say to Buffy -- I /hope/ we get to hear him say what he's been
feeling. I think it will be very moving.
- -Oz, whom I always like, seemed to mesh better in this episode than in the
first. I especially enjoyed: "I /like/ it... I think we should name it
'Patches'."
- -Was the Library less bright when Giles and the Scooby Crew were in there
researching the cat? I can't remember (which is odd, considering how much
I've mentioned the lighting in there.) I did consciously notice sun
streaming into it during Buffy's dream.
[I compare the Zombie Cat in Library scene in DMP to the 'Whole Nine
Yards of What' scene in What's my Line #1]
- -A HA! The scene with Giles/Crew/Zombie Cat in the Library was lit MUCH more
like it 'normally' is -- I didn't notice it the first two times I watched
the scene, because I was enjoying the scene. The banter seemed more
comfortable, the dialogue was smoother and more like the old days, and the
lighting was 'normal... yet the library was much more brightly lit in
Buffy's spooky dream... Think maybe that part of the 'comfort and
discomfort' effect is being achieved with the lighting? Joss IS doing this
on purpose! Damn he's good.
- -I wonder if they aren't showing previews of the next week's episode because
Joss is trying to reduce spoilers... or maybe the WB just has a bad case of
Felicitytus -- I recommend a good dose of penicillin.
- -I liked the spookiness of Buffy's dream -- I like that she's been using
Good Angel as the voice of insight in her dreams ever since the time she
figured out who Jenny C. really was. It didn't seem like his appearance was
contract obligation to me... it fit with every other big dream she's had
since things started getting really hairy.
>>The whole Giles/Joyce tension of last episode was completely gone.
- - I disagree -- I thought Giles showed the tension when he asked how Buffy
'found' Joyce... and also in a few looks he gave Joyce at the house... it
was all facial stuff, but it was there.
- -Giles visibly deciding to 'do something' about getting Buffy back in school
was good -- you could see that he had decided he needed to take action...
very cool.
- -My GOD they TRASHED the house!!! Wow. :)

Subject: BUFFY: Dead Man's Party
Spoilers
I guess I'm gonna be in the minority here and say No! I did not think this
was a great episode!!
Okay, let's think about this: Buffy's just come back. Joyce, clearly trying
to take more of an interest in her daughter's life, decides to invite Buffy's
friends and Mr. Giles over for dinner. She's even going to use the good
china.
And what happens?
Buffy's pals invite the _whole school_, including a _rock band_. Though they
are all _underage_, beer is served.
And what's Joyce's reaction?
She bops a little to the music while sipping alcohol with her next-door
neighbor!!!
This is _ridiculous_!!!!!! This is totally and completely ridiculous!! I'll
suspend my disbelief about monsters from the undead, but I will _not_ suspend
my disbelief about how a parent would react if her carefully planned dinner
party turned into an underage-drinking bash!
The fact is, this episode was just a great example of why it was really a
horrendously bad idea to let Joyce in on the secret. I mean, it made for
really great, powerful television last season, but I think it's just going to
undermine the storylines in the future. What was so wonderful about her being
in the dark was that it contributed to this idea that all of Buffy's
adventures are just high school from a teenager's point of view -- so that
where Buffy sees a vicious demon, Mom sees an insensitive boyfriend. The
moments where Buffy felt she had to "save the world" and Joyce just rolled her
eyes and thought of how sixteen-year-olds exaggerate everything were of the
best in the series, because they were those moments where we saw the _reality_
of youth behind the Vampire Slayer fantasy. By letting Joyce in on the
"fantasy," that marvelous truth -- about the difference in points of view
between parents and children -- is lost.
But, on the bright side, at least we got more glimpses of just how much Giles
is in love with Buffy....

I have seen some previews on satellite- I was on S1 and moved east a few
spaces. Normally it is not on S1. But when I get back to Edmonton I'll
ask my sister. I think she has seen some previews- she is always telling
me the story line before the show is aired. Once I get the inf.- I'll
post it.

Subject: BUFFY: Willow's hats in school -- some non-Buffy content; some thoughts on last night's episode
Someone wrote (sorry about the lack of attribution):
>have, that lots of times, including the season premiere, Willow wears
>a hat in school, & she doesn't get yelled at. I know in most high

>insight on that, please reply.
Hats were prohibited in my high school -- back then (late 80's), it was
a matter of respecting the school environment and not wearing hats
indoors (outside was ok, as I recall). I think that now, a lot of the
no-hat rule has to do with gangs.
Our school was also pretty strict about no shorts, halter tops, muscle
shirts, etc. We also had a no backpack rule -- supposedly to protect us
from physical injury (!!!) from, I don't know, flailing backpacks or
something. So I brought a briefcase to school. :)
Regarding last night's episode, I was definitely one for the Giles
empowerment aspect. And now my fiancee doesn't think I'm nuts for
thinking that Snyder (and much of Sunnydale's leadership) is in league
with some evil force. All in all, I did like the episode. One thing I
didn't like, though, was, as someone mentioned before, that after the
zombie fight at the end, everyone was chummy. Then again, I suppose
this was sort of an emergency, so they had to pull together.
This isn't really something I either liked or disliked, but I was a
little surprised at the way in which Buffy had to defeat The Demon
Formerly Known As Pat, with the shovel in the eyes. I was expecting
that the key to victory would lie in reflecting TDFKAP's gaze back on
her, or getting her to look in a mirror or something.
Somehow, this episode reminded me of the video for "Thriller." I
actually had the song going through my head as I was watching the
zombies march towards Buffy's house. :)

<<Wrong. Xander was expressing what most or all of the rest of the Scooby

I'll agree, USUALLY running away is *NOT* a good way to deal with things,
but like buffy said, Joyce told her not to come back, and besides that SHE
WAS A WANTED MURDERER!!! the police were actually doing there job's halfway
decent in Becoming so if buffy just "hung around" right now she could be in
prison! That was one thing i was REALLY dissapointed about in this EP was
that the reasoning behind the dropped charges was never addressed.

Subject: BUFFY: DMP--my .02
Well, I see DMP has driven the Xander haters into a frenzy. I guess I will
have to go into defend-a-Xander mode one more time.
First off, as a superhero with the ability to ward off the undead, Buffy
has a responsibility to the world as the slayer. More important, she has
an obligation to stay around her friends and family and ensure their safety
from said evil forces. When she bailed, she put the lives of everyone she
purportedly cared about up for grabs.
Sure, her Mom kicked her out, but did she have to leave town? She could
have crashed at Willow's or Giles' house, but no, she left town and left
everyone in danger. And despite the fun they appeared to be having at
warding off the vamps, the Scooby gang was in serious danger.
As with the Angel recursing thing, someone needed to step up and let Buffy
know she was being selfish. Willow did it in a girly whiny way, Joyce did
it in a mad Mom way, and Xander did it in an angry teenage boy way. Was
Buffy deserving of more compassion? Only if she asked for it. Remember
they tried to find out her deal and she refused to talk about it? That was
in and of itself very rude. They wanted to know her motivation for leaving
them to die and she forced all of them to leave it up to their imagination.
At least Xander was direct--Willow just bailed on her shopping trip without
even telling her, quite the passive-aggressive reaction.
Now on to the ep...
I had kind of an "Empire Stikes Back" reaction to DMP--cool, but now lets
get on with the good stuff.
I really liked Sarah and Aly's acting, Cordy's cracks, Oz's party
explanations, the Dingoes' performing and Marti's writing. The real
highlight of the ep was everything Giles: ASH really stole this one with
his misting up at Buffy's return, his wisecracking about the mask and
hotwiring and his threatening of the Ferengi.
Is it next Tuesday yet?
Chas
PS Charisma posted on the board last night! Way cool.
